Addressing The Failures Of Modern Math Instruction: Insights From Classical Christian Education, Carol L. Reid

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

Following the Covid 19 pandemic, standardized mathematics test scores for American 4th and 8th graders plummeted dramatically. While many have been quick to blame the sudden and chaotic quarantine-mandated movement onto virtual platforms of learning, the history of American public education reveals a centuries-old struggle for math proficiency amid inconsistent attitudes about the relevance of math, appropriate objectives for math proficiency, and the mechanisms by which numeracy should be evaluated. From the mid-19th century, during what the author will refer to as the modern education era, objectives have endured constant recalibration as oscillating priorities have dictated math skill prioritization. The …

LSU Master's Theses

Reliable prediction of gas migration velocity, void fraction, and length of gas-affected region in water and oil-based muds is essential for effective planning, control, and optimization of drilling operations. However, there is a gap in our understanding of gas behavior and dynamics in water and oil-based muds. This is a consequence of the use of experimental systems that are not representative of field-scale conditions. This study seeks to bridge the gap via the well-scale deployment of distributed fiber-optic sensors for real-time monitoring of gas behavior and dynamics in water and oil-based mud. The aforementioned parameters were estimated in real-time using …

Dynamic Fibrillar Assembly Of Αb-Crystallin Induced By Perturbation Of The Conserved Nt-Ixi Motif Resolved By Cryo-Em, Russell Mcfarland, Steve Reichow Mar 2024

Dynamic Fibrillar Assembly Of Αb-Crystallin Induced By Perturbation Of The Conserved Nt-Ixi Motif Resolved By Cryo-Em, Russell Mcfarland, Steve Reichow

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

αB-crystallin is an archetypical member of the small heat-shock proteins (sHSPs) vital for cellular proteostasis and mitigating protein misfolding diseases. Gaining insights into the principles defining their molecular organization and chaperone function have been hindered by intrinsic dynamic properties and limited high-resolution structural analysis. To disentangle the mechanistic underpinnings of these dynamical properties, we mutated a conserved IXI-motif located within the N-terminal (NT) domain of human αB-crystallin. This resulted in a profound structural transformation, from highly polydispersed caged-like native assemblies into a comparatively well-ordered helical fibril state amenable to high-resolution cryo-EM analysis. The reversible nature of the induced fibrils facilitated …

From the microstructures of organisms to the functional materials used in industrial production, whenever matter exists, there are non-covalent interactions between the molecules that build up the matter. The exploration of non-covalent forces helps people understand the intrinsic principles of life processes, it can be applied to create new supramolecular materials as well. Supramolecular chemistry is a research field focusing on the properties and applications of non-covalent interactions. Various non-covalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, metal-ligand coordination, π-π interaction, hydrophobic interaction, etc., are objects of research in supramolecular chemistry.

Not only supramolecular chemists, …

Characterizing And Mitigating Transient Noise In Ligo Observatories For Gravitational Wave Detection, Jane Glanzer Mar 2024

Characterizing And Mitigating Transient Noise In Ligo Observatories For Gravitational Wave Detection, Jane Glanzer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The existence of gravitational waves is predicted by Albert Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. Commonly referred to as "ripples in spacetime", these waves are generated by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the universe. Despite their theoretical prediction over a century ago, it wasn't until 2015 that the Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) interferometers in Hanford, WA and Livingston, LA directly detected gravitational waves for the first time, confirming Einstein's theory and ushering in a new era of astrophysics.

Detecting gravitational waves requires incredible precision. Because of the extreme sensitivity required, it is possible for the gravitational wave data …

Near-Neutral Balanced Selection Theory (Nnbst): Implication On The Molecular Evolution Of Sars-Cov-2 And Zika Virus, Nicholas J. Paradis

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Symposium

Virus pandemics have significantly impacted human welfare and development. Understanding the true molecular evolution of viruses is critical for preventing future pandemics and developing the next-generation drugs and vaccines. Unfortunately, viruses exhibiting constant genomic substitution rates (GSRs) despite increasing vaccinations and human infections (SARS-CoV-2) and viruses under seemingly extreme conservation (ZIKV) paints a confusing picture of viral evolution, and the main evolutionary theories (Selectionist Theory, Kimura’s Neutral Theory) cannot explain their molecular evolution. Here, we developed a first-principle model, c/u, to characterize reproductive fitness changes in viruses based on variations in the nucleotide/codon mutation rate (c) with respect to the …

Differences In Drinking Patterns In Graduate Students Based On Degree Type, Faith Shank

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Symposium

Graduate school is accompanied by high levels of stress, as students are faced with various responsibilities (El-Ghoroury et al., 2012; Offstein et al., 2004). However, many graduate students have barriers to mental health services, resulting in the use of maladaptive coping mechanisms, specifically alcohol use (Ayala et al., 2017). Related, professional doctoral students (e.g., MD, OD, JD) tend to engage in problematic drinking, with a range of 33-50% drinking heavily (Organ et al., 2016; Waring et al., 1984). There is limited research examining the drinking patterns of students enrolled in different types of programs. We aimed to examine differences in …

Repetitive Negative Thinking As A Prospective Predictor Of Depression And Anxiety Symptoms In Autistic And Non-Autistic Incoming College Students, Erin Kckenney

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Symposium

Background: Improving the understanding and treatment of mental health concerns, including depression and anxiety, are significant priorities for autistic adults (Benevides et al., 2020; Crane et al., 2019; Pellicano et al., 2014). While several theories have been proposed to explain the high prevalence of internalizing symptoms in autistic people, little longitudinal research has been done to investigate potential causal mechanisms. One potentially fruitful area of investigation is to explore how well-known contributors to depression/anxiety in the general population predict and/or moderate the development of internalizing symptoms in autistic individuals. Objectives: The current study investigates the relation of one established risk …

Black Boys Om: A Case Study Of The Impacts Of Community And Culture On Wellness Practices, Khanh Pham Mar 2024

Black Boys Om: A Case Study Of The Impacts Of Community And Culture On Wellness Practices, Khanh Pham

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Symposium

Black men continue to face health disparities due to systemic oppression. Research indicates that mind-body-spirit practices (MBSPs) can effectively improve mental and physical health, thereby reducing health disparities among Black men. However, MBSPs are often White-female-dominated practices, thus putting Black male practitioners at continued risks of under-representation and marginalization in MBSP spaces. The culturally specific nature of MBSP spaces may then be an important factor in MBSPs’ influence on Black men’s health. Therefore, we aimed to explore how culturally specific MBSP spaces impact Black male practitioners’ MBSPs. We collaborated with Black Boys OM (BBO), a global community of Black male …

Computer Aided Design Of Aromatic Foldamer Targeting Protein-Protein Interaction, Bamidele Towolawi Mar 2024

Computer Aided Design Of Aromatic Foldamer Targeting Protein-Protein Interaction, Bamidele Towolawi

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Symposium

With the computational tools developed in our lab for accurate prediction of structures and solution dynamics of aromatic foldamers, we now target protein-protein interaction (PPI) by appending proteinogenic side chains on the external surfaces of the helical aromatic foldamers. Particularly, the activation of a regulatory protein NF-κB, a key player in the inflammatory response and cell proliferation, involves binding of NEMO (NF-κB Essential Modulator) with linear di-ubiquitin. In this study, we designed various sequences based on established protocols and investigated, by utilizing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, their potential binding to di-ubiquitin, specifically targeting the NEMO binding interface. This study complements …

Comprehensive Constraints On Dark Radiation Injection After Bbn, A. C. Sobotka, A. L. Erickcek, Tristan L. Smith

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We derive constraints on the injection of free-streaming dark radiation after big bang nucleosynthesis by considering the decay of a massive hidden sector particle into dark radiation. Such a scenario has the potential to alleviate the Hubble tension by introducing a new energy component to the evolution of the early Universe. We employ observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from Planck 2018 and South Pole Telescope 2018, measurements of the primordial deuterium abundance, Pantheon+ type Ia supernovae data, and baryon acoustic oscillation measurements from BOSS DR12 to constrain these decay scenarios. Prerecombination decays are primarily restricted by observations of …
