Dismountable And Non-Dismountable Spaces Via Proximity Space, Raghad Almohammed, L .A.A. Jabar

Baghdad Science Journal

Most problems studied by researchers were converted into mathematical formulas in the proximity space because this space is easily employed to solve the different problems of life. Therefore, the current study attempts to find a new property for proximity spaces using the proximity and cluster properties and linking them to obtain new cumulative points, it is called the Bushy Points and the set of all these points is the Bushy set. They form a coherent mathematical foundation for the topological formula that is looking for, which can be called dismountable space. If the space does not have this property, it …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Critical infrastructure (CI) typically refers to the essential physical and virtual systems, assets, and services that are vital for the functioning and well-being of a society, economy, or nation. However, the rapid proliferation and dynamism of today's cyber threats in digital environments may disrupt CI functionalities, which would have a debilitating impact on public safety, economic stability, and national security. This has led to much interest in effective cybersecurity solutions regarding automation and intelligent decision-making, where AI-based modeling is potentially significant. In this paper, we take into account “Rule-based AI” rather than other black-box solutions since model transparency, i.e., human …

Matrix Profile Data Mining For Bgp Anomaly Detection, Ben A. Scott, Michael N. Johnstone, Patryk Szewczyk, Steven Richardson Apr 2024

Matrix Profile Data Mining For Bgp Anomaly Detection, Ben A. Scott, Michael N. Johnstone, Patryk Szewczyk, Steven Richardson

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), acting as the communication protocol that binds the Internet, remains vulnerable despite Internet security advancements. This is not surprising, as the Internet was not designed to be resilient to cyber-attacks, therefore the detection of anomalous activity was not of prime importance to the Internet creators. Detection of BGP anomalies can potentially provide network operators with an early warning system to focus on protecting networks, systems, and infrastructure from significant impact, improve security posture and resilience, while ultimately contributing to a secure global Internet environment. In this paper, we present a novel technique for the detection …

Nonstationary Recharge Responses To A Drying Climate In The Gnangara Groundwater System, Western Australia, Simone Gelsinari, Sarah Bourke, James Mccallum, Don Mcfarlane, Joel Hall, Richard Silberstein, Sally Thompson

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The response of groundwater recharge to climate change needs to be understood to enable sustainable management of groundwater systems today and in the future, yet observations of recharge over long-enough time periods to reveal responses to climate trends are scarce. Here we present a meta-analysis of 60 years of recharge studies over the Gnangara Groundwater System of South-West Western Australia, covering a period of sustained drying consistent with climate change projections. The recharge process in the area is defined by a wet winter during which rain saturates a deep, highly permeable soil profile with very low water storage capacity. Measurements …

Designing Pareto-Optimal Selection Systems For Multiple Minority Subgroups And Multiple Criteria, Wilfried De Corte, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens Apr 2024

Designing Pareto-Optimal Selection Systems For Multiple Minority Subgroups And Multiple Criteria, Wilfried De Corte, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Currently used Pareto-optimal (PO) approaches for balancing diversity and validity goals in selection can deal only with one minority group and one criterion. These are key limitations because the workplace and society at large are getting increasingly diverse and because selection system designers often have interest in multiple criteria. Therefore, the article extends existing methods for designing PO selection systems to situations involving multiple criteria and multiple minority groups (i.e., multiobjective PO selection systems). We first present a hybrid multiobjective PO approach for computing selection systems that are PO with respect to (a) a set of quality objectives (i.e., criteria) …

Optical Fiber Magnetic Field Detector, Aiden Tomov , '24, Paige Poteet , '24 Apr 2024

Optical Fiber Magnetic Field Detector, Aiden Tomov , '24, Paige Poteet , '24

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

This project demonstrates an optical approach to magnetic field detection. Operating as an adapted Mach-Zender interferometer, the apparatus begins by splitting an infrared beam of light into two separate paths, each with 50% of the overall power. These paths are segments of single-mode photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and are of equal lengths. One of the PCF paths has its air holes infused with EMG 700 ferrofluid which, by nature of ferrofluids, has a tunable refractive index (RI). The beams are recombined and shone into a power meter for analysis. When the ferrofluid-infused path encounters a magnetic field, the RI within …

Topological Spaces Of Embodied Becoming: Queens, Queerness And (Infra)Structural Subterfuge In Singapore, Orlando Woods Apr 2024

Topological Spaces Of Embodied Becoming: Queens, Queerness And (Infra)Structural Subterfuge In Singapore, Orlando Woods

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper considers the political potential that emerges when theorizations of the body-as-infrastructure are brought into conversation with theorizations of topological space. It argues that the infrastructural body provides an interface through which structural norms can be destabilized, and the interrelationships between the state, society, and self can be reimagined. These ideas are illustrated through an empirical exploration of drag queens in Singapore. Singapore is a socially conservative Asian city-state in which heteronormative values are passed down by the state, reproduced through the family, and then used to structure societal under- standings of gender and sexuality. By interpreting Singapore’s hegemonic …

Community College Engineering Degree Partnerships With 4-Year Universities, Jeffrey Mark Stear Apr 2024

Community College Engineering Degree Partnerships With 4-Year Universities, Jeffrey Mark Stear

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing the number of STEM professionals and reducing inequities in STEM are national priorities. Community colleges are important to address these concerns because they represent a higher percentage of underrepresented minority (URM) and women students. However, students starting 4-year STEM degrees in community college have had a lower completion rate. Partnerships between community colleges and 4-year universities have the potential to improve success for community college students, but more research is necessary. The purpose of this ex post facto, quantitative, correlational study was to determine the relationships among participation in different types of partnerships between community colleges and 4-year universities, …

Unlocking Potential: Analyzing The Impact Of Special Education Services On The Assessment Outcomes Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Kaitlyn Billops Apr 2024

Unlocking Potential: Analyzing The Impact Of Special Education Services On The Assessment Outcomes Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Kaitlyn Billops

Dissertations

Since the enactment of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 2004, there has been a notable increase in the enrollment of students receiving special education services (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2022). However, despite advancements in special education programming and service delivery, academic performance for students with disabilities still falls behind their general education peers, particularly on state summative assessments (Aron & Loprest, 2012). Disparities in academic achievement on these assessments can be attributed to various factors, including assessment practices, students' comfort levels during testing, and the severity of their disabilities. Assessing the efficacy of special education …

Stealthy Backdoor Attack For Code Models, Zhou Yang, Bowen Xu, Jie M. Zhang, Hong Jin Kang, Jieke Shi, Junda He, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Code models, such as CodeBERT and CodeT5, offer general-purpose representations of code and play a vital role in supporting downstream automated software engineering tasks. Most recently, code models were revealed to be vulnerable to backdoor attacks. A code model that is backdoor-attacked can behave normally on clean examples but will produce pre-defined malicious outputs on examples injected with that activate the backdoors. Existing backdoor attacks on code models use unstealthy and easy-to-detect triggers. This paper aims to investigate the vulnerability of code models with backdoor attacks. To this end, we propose A (dversarial eature as daptive Back). A achieves stealthiness …

Towards Low-Resource Rumor Detection: Unified Contrastive Transfer With Propagation Structure, Hongzhan Lin, Jing Ma, Ruichao Yang, Zhiwei Yang, Mingfei Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The truth is significantly hampered by massive rumors that spread along with breaking news or popular topics. Since there is sufficient corpus gathered from the same domain for model training, existing rumor detection algorithms show promising performance on yesterday's news. However, due to a lack of substantial training data and prior expert knowledge, they are poor at spotting rumors concerning unforeseen events, especially those propagated in different languages (i.e., low-resource regimes). In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective framework with unified contrastive transfer learning, to detect rumors by adapting the features learned from well-resourced rumor data to that …

Flgan: Gan-Based Unbiased Federated Learning Under Non-Iid Settings, Zhuoran Ma, Yang Liu, Yinbin Miao, Guowen Xu, Ximeng Liu, Jianfeng Ma, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Federated Learning (FL) suffers from low convergence and significant accuracy loss due to local biases caused by non-Independent and Identically Distributed (non-IID) data. To enhance the non-IID FL performance, a straightforward idea is to leverage the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to mitigate local biases using synthesized samples. Unfortunately, existing GAN-based solutions have inherent limitations, which do not support non-IID data and even compromise user privacy. To tackle the above issues, we propose a GAN-based unbiased FL scheme, called FlGan, to mitigate local biases using synthesized samples generated by GAN while preserving user-level privacy in the FL setting. Specifically, FlGan first …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human social interactions occur in group settings of varying sizes and locations, depending on the type of social activity. The ability to distinguish group formations based on their purposes transforms how group detection mechanisms function. Not only should such tools support the effective detection of serendipitous encounters, but they can derive categories of relation types among users. Determining who is involved, what activity is performed, and when and where the activity occurs are critical to understanding group processes in greater depth, including supporting goal-oriented applications (e.g., performance, productivity, and mental health) that require sensing social factors. In this work, we …

Encoding Version History Context For Better Code Representation, Huy Nguyen, Christoph Treude, Patanamon Thongtanunam Apr 2024

Encoding Version History Context For Better Code Representation, Huy Nguyen, Christoph Treude, Patanamon Thongtanunam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the exponential growth of AI tools that generate source code, understanding software has become crucial. When developers comprehend a program, they may refer to additional contexts to look for information, e.g. program documentation or historical code versions. Therefore, we argue that encoding this additional contextual information could also benefit code representation for deep learning. Recent papers incorporate contextual data (e.g. call hierarchy) into vector representation to address program comprehension problems. This motivates further studies to explore additional contexts, such as version history, to enhance models' understanding of programs. That is, insights from version history enable recognition of patterns in …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

GitHub Sponsors was launched in 2019, enabling donations to opensource software developers to provide financial support, as per GitHub’s slogan: “Invest in the projects you depend on”. However, a 2022 study on GitHub Sponsors found that only two-fifths of developers who were seeking sponsorship received a donation. The study found that, other than internal actions (such as offering perks to sponsors), developers had advertised their GitHub Sponsors profiles on social media, such as Twitter (also known as X). Therefore, in this work, we investigate the impact of tweets that contain links to GitHub Sponsors profiles on sponsorship, as well as …

Impact Of Government Outsourcing Contracts On High-Tech Vendors: An Empirical Study, Yi Dong, Nan Hu, Yonghua Ji, Chenkai Ni, Jing Xie

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Outsourcing is an important strategic decision of high-tech firms. However, while the research has extensively studied the implications of outsourcing to high-tech clients, its impact on high-tech vendors remains underexplored. This study empirically estimates the impact of government outsourcing contracts on high-tech vendors. Employing the earnings-return analyses framework, we find that, for high-tech vendors engaged in government outsourcing contracts, the stock market places a higher value on each unit of unexpected earnings compared to other firms. Additionally, this impact becomes stronger for contracts with longer terms, for contracts outsourced by the U.S. government or by countries with better political and …

Unveiling Memorization In Code Models, Zhou Yang, Zhipeng Zhao, Chenyu Wang, Jieke Shi, Dongsun Kim, Donggyun Han, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The availability of large-scale datasets, advanced architectures, and powerful computational resources have led to effective code models that automate diverse software engineering activities. The datasets usually consist of billions of lines of code from both open-source and private repositories. A code model memorizes and produces source code verbatim, which potentially contains vulnerabilities, sensitive information, or code with strict licenses, leading to potential security and privacy issues. This paper investigates an important problem: to what extent do code models memorize their training data? We conduct an empirical study to explore memorization in large pre-trained code models. Our study highlights that simply extracting …

Does The Use Of Media And Other Information Sources Cause The Perceived Experience Of Climate Change Or Is It The Other Way Around?, Sonny Rosenthal, Pengya Ai

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The perceived experience of climate change can be an important motivator of individual climate action. Recent scholarship argued that the use of media and other information sources is a basis of perceived experience. The current study analyzed a cross-lagged panel model to know if the use of information causes perceived experience or vice versa. Analysis of longitudinal data from a sample of Singapore residents (N = 466) showed that the use of traditional media, but not social media or interpersonal sources, explained change in perceived experience. In contrast, perceived experience explained change in the use of traditional media and interpersonal …

Evaluation Of Modulus Of Elasticity Of Concrete Containing Both Natural And Recycled Concrete Aggregates, Zaiwei Li, Long Yuan Li, Shanshan Cheng

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

There is growing requirement to use recycled aggregate in concrete to demote industrial wastes produced by construction sectors. Thus, to develop simple but meaningful formulations to assess the mechanical properties of concrete, when it is mixed with both natural and recycled aggregates, becomes essential. In the present study an analytical approach to calculate the elastic modulus of concrete containing both natural and recycled concrete aggregates is proposed. The approach is developed on the concept of effective medium approximation but considering the effect of Poisson's ratio. Two analytical formulas are derived. One is for the two-phase concrete (mortar and aggregate) that …
