Legal Hypergraphs, Corinna Coupette, Dirk Hartung, Daniel Martin Katz

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Complexity science provides a powerful framework for understanding physical, biological and social systems, and network analysis is one of its principal tools. Since many complex systems exhibit multilateral interactions that change over time, in recent years, network scientists have become increasingly interested in modelling and measuring dynamic networks featuring higher-order relations. At the same time, while network analysis has been more widely adopted to investigate the structure and evolution of law as a complex system, the utility of dynamic higher-order networks in the legal domain has remained largely unexplored. Setting out to change this, we introduce temporal hypergraphs as a …

Prison Labor: The Ethical And Economic Implications Of Rethinking The Thirteenth Amendment And Fair Labor Standards Act, Peter Holland

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Prisoners have historically been paid extremely low wages, if any, for the jobs they perform while incarcerated. The Thirteenth Amendment, which made slavery illegal except as a punishment for crime, has often been used to validate this practice. This paper will argue that denying prisoners minimum wage is a misapplication of both the Thirteenth Amendment and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Additionally, the paper claims that paying prisoners minimum wage would have many positive economic consequences.

Charity Law & Blockchain Technology: Using Old Wineskins For New Wine?, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer

Journal Articles

Whenever something new emerges, the question of how existing law applies arises. Sometimes it is both easy to answer that question and the answer is consistent with the policy goals of existing law. But sometimes the answer to that question is uncertain, does not fit well with those policy goals, or reflects a mixture of these two issues.

This question is particularly vexing today with respect to new assets facilitated by blockchain technology. These new assets include cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and ownership interests in decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Commentators have written about how certain laws, particularly securities law, apply …

A Compendium Of Cross-Culturally Valid Intimate Partner Violence Assessment Items For North American Spanish Speakers, Alberto D. Torres-Aragón

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is physical, psychological, or sexual abuse by a current or former romantic partner. The long- and short-term consequences can lead to severe repercussions. To prevent these consequences of IPV, we need to screen for it and assess it. Across cultures, IPV is present and should be assessed regardless of linguistic boundaries. Spanish is the most widely used language in the U.S. other than English; therefore, assessment instruments that can reliably capture IPV in Spanish are necessary. Although Spanish-language IPV instruments are available, they may be challenging to understand for Spanish speakers because of linguistic differences. In …

On Generating Bijections For Permutations And Inversion Sequences, Melanie J. Ferreri Apr 2024

On Generating Bijections For Permutations And Inversion Sequences, Melanie J. Ferreri

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Given an algebraic proof of a combinatorial identity, we use recursive methods to construct a bijection demonstrating the identity.

Our first application centers around derangements and nonderangements. A derangement is a permutation with no fixed point, and a nonderangement is a permutation with at least one fixed point. There is a one-term recurrence for the number of derangements of n elements, and we describe a bijective proof of this recurrence which can be found using a recursive map. We then show the combinatorial interpretation of this bijection and how it compares with other known bijections, and show how this extends …

Design, Analysis, And Drop Assembly Of Interlocking Rigid Bodies, Amy K. Sniffen

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

This work presents a system of interlocking blocks that can be used to build a wide variety of structures. The blocks slide together to form structures that interlock geometrically like a puzzle to form semi-permanent structures without the need for cement or friction lock. The blocks are designed to be easy to fabricate, assemble, and disassemble. Contributions of the block designs include a novel interlocking joint structure; the joints are wedge-shaped, allowing for error mitigation during assembly and allowing structures to be assembled without jamming even if there is manufacturing error. We introduce planar, 3D, and volumetric designs using these …

An Ecological Analysis Of The Elevational Gradient Effect On Mushroom Community Diversity Near Andasibe, Madagascar, Zoe Garver Apr 2024

An Ecological Analysis Of The Elevational Gradient Effect On Mushroom Community Diversity Near Andasibe, Madagascar, Zoe Garver

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The effect of elevational gradients on biodiversity has been widely studied in the field of ecology (Rahbek, 1995). The evidence supports a trend for highest biodiversity at mid latitudes and decreasing biodiversity as elevation increases (Rahbek, 1997; Grytnes, 2003; Hariharan and Buckley, 2022). This effect has primarily been explained by variation of temperatures and resource availability at different elevations. However, the effect that elevation plays on fungal communities is relatively underrepresented in the literature (Dahlberg, 2001). This study analyzes changes in mushroom diversity across an elevational gradient in Mitsinjo Reserve and Analamazaotra National Park found in Madagascar. Using the Braun-Blanquet …
