Toward A Continuum For Jesuit Education Founded Upon Cura Personalis And Magis, Jose Miguel Jaramillo

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation examines the principles and purposes of Jesuit education, renowned for integrating academic excellence with spiritual and civic values, in search of decision-making criteria. While Jesuit schools followed the 1599 Ratio studiorum, they now adhere to guidelines set by the International Commission for the Apostolate of Jesuit Education (ICAJE). Despite ICAJE's comprehensive framework, a gap exists in providing explicit criteria for educational decision-making beyond calling to discern. Employing a thematic qualitative content analysis method, this research analyzes ICAJE’s documents through a hermeneutic lens, drawing upon foundational Jesuit educational sources and significant contemporary studies. Key findings suggest that these principles …

Probing Charge Transport Mechanisms In 2d Semiconductive Metal Organic Framewoks, James Nyakuchena

Dissertations (1934 -)

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of highly porous crystalline materials constructed from metal nodes connected by multitopic organic ligands. Due to their unique properties such as large surface area, tunable pore structure, and structural diversity, they have demonstrated potential in a wide array of applications including gas storage and separation, sensing, catalysis, and drug delivery. However, there are only a handful of MOFs reported that have electrical conductivity, which prevents their applications in photoelectronic and photocatalytic applications. This is because hard metals and redox inactive ligands with terminal hard linking bases such as carboxylates are often used in …

Procedures For Rangeland Condition Assessment In The Pilbara And Southern Rangelands 2022, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development

Natural resources published reports

To define the procedures used in 2022 by DPIRD to complete rangeland condition assessment (RCA) in the Pilbara and southern rangelands region which has predominantly shrub-based pastures. For the rest of the pastoral estate, DPIRD uses the Procedures for RCA in the Kimberley which has grass pastures.

RCA is the process DPIRD uses to make systematic, lease level assessment of rangeland. Rangeland condition considers both the condition of pastures (as defined in the Pasture condition and management guide for the Pilbara rangelands or Southern rangelands pasture condition and management guides) and soils (as determined by erosion, using the erosion assessment …

The effect of barley seed extracts on the corrosion of carbon steel in 1M hydrochloric acid at different temperatures was investigated from the perspective of their potential use as green inhibitors in the cleaning and descaling processes in heat exchangers. A 50% ethanol/water (vol) solution was used for extraction. Two extraction methods were used: soaking and ultrasound. The inhibition mechanism of the inhibitor that gave the best efficiency was investigated by studying the adsorption and corrosion processes by electrochemical methods (potentiodynamic polarisation (Tafel curves) and electrochemical resistance spectroscopy) and thermodynamic calculations. The results of the study showed no effect of …

Exploring N-H Bond Activation And C-H Bond Activation By Tripodal Tris(Nitroxide) Aluminum And Gallium Complexes, Vivian W. Guo , '24 Apr 2024

Exploring N-H Bond Activation And C-H Bond Activation By Tripodal Tris(Nitroxide) Aluminum And Gallium Complexes, Vivian W. Guo , '24

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

The activation of H–X (X = O, N, C) bonds is a common primary step in introducing alcohols, amines, and hydrocarbons into catalytic processes used in various industries. Precious metal complexes are commonly used as catalysts to activate H–X bonds through formal metal-based oxidative addition. However, since precious metals are scarce, expensive, toxic, and environmentally harmful, developing non-precious metal coordination complexes for H–X bond activation is essential. As a result, we investigate the activation of O–H, N–H, and C–H bonds through tripodal tris(nitroxide) aluminum and gallium complexes to develop a green strategy for broad-based H–X bond activation. Past members of …

Thinking Outside The Membrane: Investigating The Structure Of The Influenza A M2 Ectodomain, Kyra Roepke , '24 Apr 2024

Thinking Outside The Membrane: Investigating The Structure Of The Influenza A M2 Ectodomain, Kyra Roepke , '24

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Influenza A leads to annual epidemics that result in three-to-five million cases of severe illness each year and occasional devastating pandemics. Some current prevention and treatment methods target the M2 membrane protein on the surface of the virus. However, viral mutability and drug resistance require the targeting of more conserved parts of the protein.

The goal of this thesis was to investigate the secondary structure and dynamics of the M2 ectodomain (M2e), which is highly conserved across influenza viruses and across evolutionary time. The structure of M2e has previously been challenging to study because of its flexibility. In this study, …

Large Sample Statistical Study Of Three-Dimensional Magnetic Reconnection At The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, Solomon Murdock , '24 Apr 2024

Large Sample Statistical Study Of Three-Dimensional Magnetic Reconnection At The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, Solomon Murdock , '24

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Many plasmas can be described by ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). A key result of ideal MHD is the frozen-in-flux theorem which states that the magnetic field stretches and bends with the motion of the plasma. The frozen-in-flux theorem is violated during magnetic reconnection, the annihilation of magnetic flux within a plasma. During reconnection, non-ideal MHD effects dominate plasma dynamics. The dynamics of magnetic reconnection is an unsolved problem in plasma physics. Most prior laboratory studies of magnetic reconnection examined reconnection in 2D scenarios, scenarios with a single ignorable coordinate. The SSX device was used to merge twisted ropes of plasma called …

Flushed With Challenges: A Case Study Into Sanitation Service Delivery In A Cape Town Informal Settlement, Emmy Li , '25

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

In South Africa, basic sanitation is considered a human right. Moreover, effective sanitation service delivery is fundamental in the ongoing transition to build sustainable cities and communities. An area of particular interest for city planners and government officials are informal settlements, which are often characterized by high vulnerabilities, large population densities, limited resources, and minimal state engagement. Due to their location and informal nature, these areas often lack sewage and drainage systems needed for effective sanitation. Unfortunately, communities that are most impacted by poor sanitation quality and service delivery are rarely consulted during the decision-making process for urban upgrades. This …
