Finite Rigid Sets In Sphere Complexes, Edgar A. Bering, Christopher J. Leininger Apr 2024

Finite Rigid Sets In Sphere Complexes, Edgar A. Bering, Christopher J. Leininger

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A subcomplex X≤C of a simplicial complex is strongly rigid if every locally injective, simplicial map X→C is the restriction of a unique automorphism of C. Aramayona and the second author proved that the curve complex of an orientable surface can be exhausted by finite strongly rigid sets. The Hatcher sphere complex is an analog of the curve complex for isotopy classes of essential spheres in a connect sum of n copies of S1×S2. We show that there is an exhaustion of the sphere complex by finite strongly rigid sets for all n≥3 and that when n=2 the sphere complex …

Uncontrolled fires place considerable burdens on forest ecosystems, compromising our ability to meet conservation and restoration goals. A poor understanding of the impacts of fire on ecosystems and their biodiversity exacerbates this challenge, particularly in tropical regions where few studies have applied consistent analytical techniques to examine a broad range of ecological impacts over multiyear time frames. We compiled 16 y of data on ecosystem properties (17 variables) and biodiversity (21 variables) from a tropical peatland in Indonesia to assess fire impacts and infer the potential for recovery. Burned forest experienced altered structural and microclimatic conditions, resulting in a proliferation …

There was a need to update the scale to measure individuals' plausibility perceptions regarding the current climate crisis. This study updated the PPM scale to reflect the IPCC's 2022 report on impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability. The updated PPM scale is a ten-point Likert scale consisting of 15 items. Data were collected from 330 pre-service teachers at a public …

Mapping Out The Sky, Erik Johnson Apr 2024

Mapping Out The Sky, Erik Johnson

Natural Science Faculty

Astronomers are often asked to help identify UFOs. It's a reasonable request since the term means "unidentified flying object." An untrained observer may not know which celestial objects are visible at night, even in light-polluted skies. They may mistake a plane for a planet, a bright star, or a satellite.

Using Ai Chatbots As Ideation Machines, Brett Hawley, Naomi Hollans

Student Works

The team analyzed 3 popular chatbots and found that none of them could consistently produce idea-centered essay help responses. The team approached them with 3 separate prompts, one from each of three academic subjects. The team analyzed how each chatbot adapted to the addition of personal information from the “student” and to the phrase, “what are some ideas that could help me get started?” The goal with each interaction was to receive a response in which the chatbot did not produce any pre-written content. Overall, the team’s research did not suggest that AI is fully reliable as an ideation tool.

Relationship Of Bedrock’S Structural Dip And Rock Hardness To The Transverse Basin Asymmetry; Studies From The Cumberland Plateau, Tennessee, And The Ouachita Mountains And The Arkoma Basin Area, Arkansas, Narayan Adhikari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The first part of this study investigates the relationship between the degree of basin asymmetry and the dip amount and hardness of resistant rock in drainage basins located in gently dipping strata of the Cumberland Plateau region, Eastern Tennessee, USA. I examined basins in which the preferred direction of river migration is oriented near parallel to slightly oblique to dip direction of the underlying bedrock. This study suggests that in basins without horizontal bedrock, when bedrock dip increases in drainage basins having resistant rocks that are gentle to moderately dipping, asymmetry of the drainage basins decreases. The Relative River Deviation …

Upregulation Of The Predominant Cystic Fibrosis Causing Mutation Df508-Cftr By Triazole Compounds In Epithelial Cells, Maggie Taylor

Undergraduate Research Conference

Cystic fibrosis is a common genetic disease that is caused by a mutation in the plasma membrane protein CFTR, which stands for Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane-conductance Regulator. When this membrane protein is mutated, it impairs its chloride ion channel function, blocking the movement of chloride ions that travel in and out of the cell. Previous studies have demonstrated that the most prevalent CFTR mutation, ∆F508-CFTR, can be partially reversed using small molecules (Heda and Marino, BBRC, 271:659-664, 2000). In this study, I have investigated the effects of several triazole compounds known to bind and transport chloride ions in cultured cells, on …
