High And Dry - Contextualizing Domestic Root Cellar Drains In Southern Ontario, Anatolijs Venovcevs Apr 2024

High And Dry - Contextualizing Domestic Root Cellar Drains In Southern Ontario, Anatolijs Venovcevs

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The subterranean root cellar is the quintessential feature of rural nineteenth-century archaeological sites in Ontario and much archaeological, historical, and architectural research on rural farmsteads has focused on defining and understanding these structures. However, this work has neglected an important component of this feature – the root cellar drain. This paper contextualizes these features within their broader nineteenth-century ideals of drainage and goes on to tackle the topic with the use of statistical analysis on the associated geographical, social, and economic attributes. The discussion presents opportunities that are present from the vast quantities of historical sites that have been excavated …

Spiritually Artificial: Divine Intersection Exploration, Christopher Jaus Apr 2024

Spiritually Artificial: Divine Intersection Exploration, Christopher Jaus

Liberty University Research Week

This paper examines the broad topic of personhood within the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how consciousness, namely the free will aspect, can frame our interactions, especially when considering a typical evangelical hermeneutic. AI which is simply a Bio-Inspired design from God’s glorious creation has a long and rich history spanning almost 70 years. AI as a term was first coined in 1956, although the mathematics of computing in general, then dubbed “Turing Machines” was two decades earlier. Despite going through “AI winters” or periods where AI fell out of popularity due to high expectations and overpromising of researchers, …

Implementation Of Rti As A Part Of Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support: What Teachers, Administrators, And Teacher Educators Need To Know, Susan Polirstok, Joseph A. Hogan

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is an outgrowth of Response to Intervention (RtI). The various systems of support for students and school communities provided through these programs are integral to modern education and embedded in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) of 2004. While there are many benefits to the implementation of MTSS and RtI, there are various obstacles that can hinder successful intervention programs. The absence of consensus across districts and states with respect to program development and implementation creates confusion. This article addresses considerations and concerns related to MTSS and RtI. Discussed are underlying principles, challenges …

Cultivating Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Approaches To Social And Emotional Learning For Students With Or At-Risk For Emotional And Behavioral Dis/Abilities, Sharde Theodore, Lindsay Romano, Fanica Young, Danica Moise, Tahnee Wilder

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

School policies are largely driven by perceptions and expectations for how students should behave academically and socially, yet these practices often lack the cultural relevance and sustainability required to support racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse (RELD) students with or at risk for emotional and behavioral dis/orders (EBD). Similarly, many evidence-based practices for behavior do not consider internalizing behaviors (e.g., anxiety, toxic stress), exemplifying a critical need for equitable practices aimed at supporting the prosocial and emotional needs of RELD students with or at risk for EBD. Given the multifaceted social, emotional, and behavioral needs of RELD students with or at …

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

The type locality for the Campanian Coon Creek Formation, located in McNairy County, Tennessee, is a well-known lagerstatte, with exceptionally preserved marine invertebrate and vertebrate remains in shallow shelf sediments. At the time of deposit ion, the type locality was located in an embayment proximal t o t he eastern margin of the Appalachia province that experienced alternately cool- and warm-water conditions, likely due to currents from both the Western Interior Seaway and Tethys. While marine in their entirety, the sediments contain significant quantities of terrestrial palynomorphs, especially near the top of the section and thus provide a snapshot of …

Acid Rain: A Levelup Experience In Math 442, Grant Amshoff, Emily Blevins, Hannah Phirman, Josh Qualls, Will Tidwell

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Acid rain has been an ongoing issue in the world since developed countries began producing emissions on a large scale. Acid rain is defined as having an average pH of 4.2-4.4, while "clean" rain is defined by the EPA as having a pH of 5.6 (Figure 1). Locations that have a history of lower pH of precipitation are places that also have higher emissions-cities with high incidence of industry, factories, mines, cattle farms, etc. As much as 70% of emissions are caused by burning fossil fuels.

The Relationship Between Fatalities In Police Violence And Their Identifying Characteristics: Age, Gender, Race, And Region, Yuechu Hu

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2024

Police violence, highlighted by the George Floyd incident in 2020, has intensified concerns about police brutality and perceived racism in U.S. law enforcement (AP News, 2022). Therefore, we intend to analyze Fatal Encounters data, which documents non-police deaths that occur in the presence of the police in the United States. By creating statistical tables and graphs, as well as applying time-series methods, classification and regression trees, and a multinomial logistic regression model, we find that males and transgender people are more likely than females to encounter victimization during police brutality enforcement for any cause of death. Victims older than 19 …

American Absurd, Kelly Stolle Apr 2024

American Absurd, Kelly Stolle

Theses

There is perhaps one line that separates the American mindset from all others in the world. That is the fascination with the American Dream. This dream, having existed since the creation of this nation, has guided almost all developments we have seen it undertake. The question that lingers, however, is what this “American Dream” actually is. How does one interpret freedom? Further, what is one to do with it? This work suggests that what fuels the American Dream is an absurdist philosophy that ripples through every aspect of American life. Utilizing the modernist literary movement, I will analyze 6 key …

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

A CNC machine is a machine comprised of a motorized and maneuverable tool and platform that are controlled by a computer according to specific inputs. Our machine are a metal mill (which cuts into metal pieces form the top) and a metal lathe (which cuts into metal pieces from the side). Attached to each of these machines is a waste bin that holds discarded metal and debris from that machines. This bin fills up often and quickly and if it isn't cleared out regularly and cause a build of metal scraps inside the machine and resulting in major malfunctions.

Providing Beginners With Interactive Exploration Of Error Messages In Clojure, John Walbran, Elena Machkasova Apr 2024

Providing Beginners With Interactive Exploration Of Error Messages In Clojure, John Walbran, Elena Machkasova

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2024

Programmers are imperfect, and will often make mistakes when programming and create a program error, for example, attempting to divide by zero. When a computer tries to run a program with an error, the program will halt and present the details of the error to the user in the form of an error message. These error messages are often very jargon-heavy, and are not designed to be palatable to a novice programmer. This creates significant friction for new programmers trying to learn programming languages. This work is a part of an ongoing project (called Babel) led by Elena Machkasova in …

Enhancing Evolutionary Computation: Optimizing Phylogeny-Informed Fitness Estimation Through Strategic Modifications, Chenfei Peng, Nic Mcphee

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2024

In evolutionary computation, programs are developed using evolution's basic principles, such as selection, mutation, and recombination, to iteratively improve problem solutions towards optimal outcomes in a reasonable amount of time. To save time and be more efficient, we are currently exploring a modified version of phylogeny-informed fitness estimation. The original version evaluates each individual program on a subset of the training cases and estimates the performance everywhere else according to its parent's performance. Our approach involves comprehensive evaluation of promising programs across all training cases, increasing computational investment where the sub-sampled results indicated potential gains. This method led to our …
