Environmental Stewardship: Managing The Process Of Changing Archives Spaces, Bethany Fiechter May 2024

Environmental Stewardship: Managing The Process Of Changing Archives Spaces, Bethany Fiechter

Library Faculty Publications

A building renovation in many ways is comparable to that of sowing and harvesting a garden. It requires a favorable environment, great planning, patience, and fortitude. Both the process and outcome can be wildly unpredictable, so archivists and any other parties involved must be prepared to respond with flexibility, adaptability, and, at times, compromise.

When we think about renovations, how do we as practitioners and leaders advocate for the specialized requirements that suit the needs of our evolving collections? How do we balance asking for what we want versus what is minimally required? What sacrifices may be needed to satisfy …

Evaluating The Qualitative Aspects Of A Community College Academic Success Program, Joselito Dacillo Coquilla May 2024

Evaluating The Qualitative Aspects Of A Community College Academic Success Program, Joselito Dacillo Coquilla

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

College academic success programs (ASP) frequently include both quantitative and qualitative key performance indicators (KPI). While the quantitative KPIs are typically programmed for evaluation within an ASP’s implementation, evaluating qualitative KPIs is resource intensive and therefore, sometimes overlooked. The problem addressed by this study was the need to evaluate the qualitative KPIs in a large community college system’s 2016 ASP (2016-2020). The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to conduct a summative evaluation to determine the extent to which the college achieved its ASP’s qualitative KPI objectives from the perspectives of students. The study was guided by Tinto’s involvement …

An Alternate Proof For The Top-Heavy Conjecture On Partition Lattices Using Shellability, Brian Macdonald, Josh Hallam May 2024

An Alternate Proof For The Top-Heavy Conjecture On Partition Lattices Using Shellability, Brian Macdonald, Josh Hallam

Honors Thesis

A partially ordered set, or poset, is governed by an ordering that may or may not relate any pair of objects in the set. Both the bonds of a graph and the partitions of a set are partially ordered, and their poset structure can be depicted visually in a Hasse diagram. The partitions of {1, 2, ..., n} form a particularly important poset known as the partition lattice Πn. It is isomorphic to the bond lattice of the complete graph Kn, making it a special case of the family of bond lattices. Dowling and Wilson’s 1975 Top-Heavy Conjecture states that …

Seeing Is Believing: Religious Views, Perceptions Of Pollution, And Environmental Attitudes, Katelynn (Sage) Shadoan May 2024

Seeing Is Believing: Religious Views, Perceptions Of Pollution, And Environmental Attitudes, Katelynn (Sage) Shadoan

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study explores the intersection of religious beliefs, perceptions of pollution, and environmental attitudes among Americans. Drawing upon Lynn White's seminal argument regarding Christian theology and its implications for environmental stewardship, this research investigates the role of biblical literalism in shaping environmental attitudes, particularly among conservative Christians. Using nationally representative survey data and logistic regression models, the study examines how the perceptions of pollution moderate the effects of views of the Bible on environmental concern. The findings reveal that while perceived pollution exposure is strongly associated with environmental attitudes, it does not moderate the association between biblical literalism and environmental …

Photodynamic Treatment Of Staphylococcus Aureus With Non-Iron Hemin Analogs In The Presence Of Hydrogen Peroxide, Badhu Prashanthika Sivasubramaniam, Benjamin M. Washer, Yuichiro Watanabe, Kathryn E. Ragheb, J. Paul Robinson, Alexander Wei

Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications

Bacteria subjected to antiseptic or antibiotic stress often develop tolerance, a trait that can lead to permanent resistance. To determine whether photodynamic agents could be used to counter tolerance, we evaluated three non-iron hemin analogs (M-PpIX; M = Al, Ga, In) as targeted photosensitizers for antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) following exposure to sublethal H2O2. Al-PpIX is an active producer of ROS whereas Ga- and In-PpIX are more efficient at generating singlet oxygen. Al- and Ga-PpIX are highly potent aPDI agents against S. aureus and methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) with antimicrobial activity (3 log reduction in colony-forming units) at nanomolar concentrations. The …

From Cypherpunks To Congress: A Historical Analysis Of The Development, Uses, And Regulatory Landscape Of Cryptocurrencies, Andrew Moore

Honors Theses

As cryptocurrencies have begun to proliferate through the economy policymakers are asking questions of where they came from, how do they work, what they are used for and how should we regulate the market. Through a historical analysis, it can be seen that Bitcoin represented a legitimate innovation in money and provided significant improvements to earlier attempts at private commodity currency. Additionally, many of the criticisms lobbied against Bitcoin appear to be overstated, most notably the claim that it is a good tool for criminals. However, there has been a notable split in the market. The emerging crypto industry bears …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The substantial temperature gradient experienced by systems operating at relatively high temperatures significantly impacts the transport characteristics of fluids. Hence, considering temperature-dependent fluid properties is critical for obtaining realistic prediction of fluid behavior and optimizing system performance. The current study focuses on the flow of nanofluids in a stationary cone–disk system (SCDS), taking into account temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and viscosity. The influence of Brownian motion, thermophoresis, and Rosseland radiative flux on the heat transport features are also examined. The Reynolds model for viscosity and Chiam's model for thermal conductivity are employed. The Navier–Stokes equation, the energy equation, the incompressibility condition, …

The Morphology, Spatial Distribution, And Collapse Mechanisms Of Volcanoes On Venus, Rebecca Mary Hahn May 2024

The Morphology, Spatial Distribution, And Collapse Mechanisms Of Volcanoes On Venus, Rebecca Mary Hahn

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Radar imagery collected by NASA’s Magellan spacecraft enabled the recognition and classification of volcanic features and structures across Venus far beyond the scope of earlier missions. These datasets revealed volcanoes that range in size from <5 km to well over 100 km in diameter. Volcanism is clearly a major, widespread process on Venus, and is a principle expression of the planet’s secular loss of interior heat. For my doctoral work, I utilized ESRI’s ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro to develop a detailed global catalog of volcanoes across Venus to improve our understanding of the morphology, spatial, distribution, and evolution of volcanism on the second planet. Chapter 2 introduces the creation and implementation of my global catalog of volcanoes and volcanic fields on Venus. This new global dataset includes ∼85,000 edifices, ∼99% of which are <5 km in diameter and are geographically widespread across the entire planet. With this catalog, I developed an automated approach to delineating volcanic fields—high spatial concentrations of small volcanoes—and also noted a dearth of volcanoes 20–100 km in diameter, which could be related to the eruption rate and/or availability of the underlying magma supply. Chapter 3 focuses on a unique subset of 162 volcanoes on Venus that appear to have undergone gravitational deformation. These deformed edifices are distributed globally, are situated at a range of elevations, are spatially proximal to a variety of tectonic structures, and are associated with various crustal thickness values, which together suggest that there are numerous drivers of volcano deformation on Venus. Furthermore, I note examples of flank terraces on Tepev Mons, a structural indicator of volcano sagging that has not yet been documented on Venus. Lastly, Chapter 4 employs kernel density estimation as a tool at nine topographic rises, and nine volcanic fields across Venus to delineate regions where future volcano formation could occur, based on the locations of edifices ≤20 km in diameter from our global catalog developed in Chapter 2. These resulting volcano-formation probability maps reveal that the intensity of volcanism producing volcanoes ≤20 km in diameter in the Beta-Atla-Themis (BAT) region, an area well-known for its enhanced volcanism (Airey et al., 2017), is lower than at topographic rises across the rest of the planet. These maps can also be used to identify specific regions across Venus that future missions such as EnVision and VERITAS can image using their higher-resolution radars and thus search for newly formed volcanoes between the time of those missions and when the Venus surface was originally mapped by Magellan. Based on my analysis, I conclude that these missions should target specific regions of high-volcano-spatial density in and around Atla, Imdr, Themis, and Dione Regiones.

Thematic Synthesis: Rethinking Generative Music With Compositional Understanding In Game And Software Development, Jasper Moore Tucker May 2024

Thematic Synthesis: Rethinking Generative Music With Compositional Understanding In Game And Software Development, Jasper Moore Tucker

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Generative music, first introduced by composers like Brian Eno and David Cope in the mid-to-late 20th century, has evolved through many stages, with diverse applications across music and technology companies as well as the game industry. However, despite this widespread interest, there remains a notable lack of the foundational understanding of composition and individual expressiveness in current generative systems that was apparent in the work of early composers. This paper advocates for a shift towards prioritizing compositional thought in system design to foster greater diversity and innovation within generative music. To demonstrate this approach, a novel system synthesizing two distinct …

Quantification Of Surface Layer Turbulence Using Sensible Heat Values From Energy Balance Versus Aerodynamic Methods, Steven T. Fiorino, Yogendra Raut, Jaclyn Schmidt, Laura Slabaugh, Blaine Fourman, Jack E. Mccrae, Benjamin C. Wilson, Santasri R. Bose-Pillai

Faculty Publications

Surface layer optical turbulence values in the form of the refractive index structure function C_n^2 are often calculated from surface layer temperature, moisture, and wind characteristics and compared to measurements from sonic anemometers, differential temperature sensors, and imaging systems. A key derived component needed in the surface layer turbulence calculations is the sensible heat value. Typically, the sensible heat is calculated using the bulk aerodynamic method that assumes a certain surface roughness and a friction velocity that approximates the turbulence drag on temperature and moisture mixing from the change in the average surface layer vertical wind velocity. These assumptions/approximations generally …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

All graduates of a doctoral anesthesiology program are required to successfully pass the National Certifying Exam (NCE). Since 2011, the national average passage rate has decreased from 89.1% to 84.1% in 2021 (NBCRNA, 2023). Yamaguchi’s 2022 study revealed that students are positively impacted academically when they implement individual learning preferences. The purpose of this project was to identify individual learning preferences for students enrolled in the U.S. Army Nurse Anesthesiology program. The hypothesis was that students who recognize their preferred learning and incorporate preferred learning techniques would result in an increased percentage of passage rate scores for the NCE. …

Neuroepigenetic Mechanisms Of Brain Development: From Technology To Biological Insights, Allen Yen May 2024

Neuroepigenetic Mechanisms Of Brain Development: From Technology To Biological Insights, Allen Yen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Each cell in the brain has the same genomic sequence, yet they can have vastly different phenotypes and function. This diversity is a result of complex genetic and signaling pathways, and knowing how these are regulated is key to understanding physiological development and how pathogenic dysfunctions arise. Genomic methods such as chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq) and assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with sequencing (ATAC-seq) have played pivotal roles in dissecting these processes. However, a key limitation is that the cells are destroyed upon observation of their molecular states, which preclude our ability to correlate historical epigenetic information with future …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Shear-thinning hydrogels are a class of materials with unique rheological properties that enable them to undergo a reversible reduction in viscosity under shear stress, which allows for easy injection. The injectability of shear-thinning hydrogels is particularly important when considering their use in biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound healing. However, before advancing to these applications, it is crucial to evaluate the “injectability” of new shear-thinning hydrogels to avoid clogging of the needle for injection. Injectability is typically associated with determining suitable viscosity, storage/loss moduli, and other factors, such as injection force (e.g., needle length and gauge …

A Realist Interpretation Of Unitarity In Quantum Gravity, Indrajit Sen, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel May 2024

A Realist Interpretation Of Unitarity In Quantum Gravity, Indrajit Sen, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Unitarity is a difficult concept to implement in canonical quantum gravity because of state non-normalisability and the problem of time. We take a realist approach based on pilot-wave theory to address this issue in the Ashtekar formulation of the Wheeler–DeWitt equation. We use the postulate of a definite configuration in the theory to define a global time for the gravitational-fermionic system recently discussed in Alexander et al (2022 Phys. Rev. D 106 106012), by parameterising a variation of a Weyl-spinor that depends on the Kodama state. The total Hamiltonian constraint yields a time-dependent Schrodinger equation, without semi-classical approximations, which we …

Techno-Economic Optimization Of A Hybrid Energy System With Limited Grid Connection In Pursuit Of Net Zero Carbon Emissions For New Zealand, Daniel Hill, Shafiqur Rahman Tito, Michael Walmsley, John Hedengren May 2024

Techno-Economic Optimization Of A Hybrid Energy System With Limited Grid Connection In Pursuit Of Net Zero Carbon Emissions For New Zealand, Daniel Hill, Shafiqur Rahman Tito, Michael Walmsley, John Hedengren

Faculty Publications

As New Zealand moves towards net zero carbon emissions by 2050, multiple factors must be considered including increased electrical load due to electrification, variability of renewable energy generators, required storage capacity, system economics and limitations on grid transmission capacity. Complex and region-specific interactions between the various design choices involved are likely to require an understanding of a range of optimal and near-optimal designs for proposed micro-grid systems as opposed to a single optimal point. This work develops a novel multiscale optimization algorithm for optimization from a univariate capacity optimization approach to a multivariate one. This enhanced algorithm is applied to …

Teaching The New Deal: 1932-1941 – Review And Analysis, Susan M. Foster, Brian Walker Johnson

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Teaching the New Deal: 1932-1941 is a text of crucial and timely importance for students and teachers of middle and high school social studies. Through the lenses of four major themes, authors demonstrate inquiry-based pedagogy to intentionally provoke students to consider non-binary conclusions that closely examine the purported heroes, villains, and martyrs of traditional historical narratives. Rather than presenting a factual or ideological approach to teaching disciplinary standards, this text depicts the New Deal Era as a period in history that can be used to critically and creatively discuss the politics of personal identity and to explore the legacies of …
