Alma Mater: Implications Of Student Mothers Not Receiving "Nourishment" From Their University, Haylie M. June
Theses and Dissertations
Student mothers, comprising over one-fifth of college students, face unique challenges balancing academic pursuits with parental responsibilities. They seek higher education to improve financial prospects and set examples for their children. However, financial burdens, including childcare costs and debt, hinder their progress. Moreover, they face role conflict and societal judgment, feeling undervalued and alienated within the university community. Despite their resourcefulness, challenges persist, emphasizing the need for institutional support. Research explores how student mothers utilize social, cultural, and financial capital to manage their roles. Interviews with thirty-nine student mothers reveal heavy reliance on individual resources but underscore the need for …

An Innovative Approach On Yao’S Three-Way Decision Model Using Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets For Medical Diagnosis, Wajid Ali, Tanzeela Shaheen, Iftikhar Ul Haq, Florentin Smarandache, Hamza Ghazanfar Toor, Faiza Asif
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In the realm of medical diagnosis, intuitionistic fuzzy data serves as a valuable tool for representing information that is uncertain and imprecise. Nevertheless, decision-making based on this kind of knowledge can be quite challenging due to the inherent vagueness of the data. To address this issue, we employ power aggregation operators, which prove effective in combining several sources of data, such as expert thoughts and patient information. This allows for a more correct diagnosis; a particularly crucial aspect of medical practice where precise and timely diagnoses can significantly impact medication policy and patient results. In our research, we introduce a …

Gradient-Based Deep Reinforcement Learning Interpretation Methods, Yuan Wang, Lin Xu, Xiaoze Gong, Yongliang Zhang, Yongli Wang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The learning process and working mechanism of deep reinforcement learning methods such as DQN are not transparent, and their decision basis and reliability cannot be perceived, which makes the decisions made by the model highly questionable and greatly limits the application scenarios of deep reinforcement learning. To explain the decision-making mechanism of intelligent agents, this paper proposes a gradient based saliency map generation algorithm SMGG. It uses the gradient information of feature maps generated by high-level convolutional layers to calculate the importance of different feature maps. With the known structure and internal parameters of the model, starting from the …

A Gold Standard-Derived Modular Barcoding Approach To Cancer Transcriptomics, Yan Zhu, Mohamad Karim I Koleilat, Jason Roszik, Man Kam Kwong, Zhonglin Wang, Dipen M Maru, Scott Kopetz, Lawrence N Kwong
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
A challenge with studying cancer transcriptomes is in distilling the wealth of information down into manageable portions of information. In this resource, we develop an approach that creates and assembles cancer type-specific gene expression modules into flexible barcodes, allowing for adaptation to a wide variety of uses. Specifically, we propose that modules derived organically from high-quality gold standards such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) can accurately capture and describe functionally related genes that are relevant to specific cancer types. We show that such modules can: (1) uncover novel gene relationships and nominate new functional memberships, (2) improve and speed …

Accelerated Somatic Mutation Calling For Whole-Genome And Whole-Exome Sequencing Data From Heterogenous Tumor Samples, Shuangxi Ji, Tong Zhu, Ankit Sethia, Wenyi Wang
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Accurate detection of somatic mutations in DNA sequencing data is a fundamental prerequisite for cancer research. Previous analytical challenges were overcome by consensus mutation calling from four to five popular callers. This, however, increases the already nontrivial computing time from individual callers. Here, we launch MuSE 2, powered by multistep parallelization and efficient memory allocation, to resolve the computing time bottleneck. MuSE 2 speeds up 50 times more than MuSE 1 and eight to 80 times more than other popular callers. Our benchmark study suggests combining MuSE 2 and the recently accelerated Strelka2 achieves high efficiency and accuracy in analyzing …
Towards Machine Proficiency With Semantic Underspecification, Zachary S. Gottesman
Towards Machine Proficiency With Semantic Underspecification, Zachary S. Gottesman
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Human natural language communication frequently relies on extra-linguistic information to fill in gaps in the linguistic signal left by semantic underspecification, or the omission of details that can be inferred from prior knowledge or other modalities. Underspecification is particularly common in conversations between acquaintances, since these interlocutors share context. Underspecification is a key and beneficial feature of natural language that improves efficiency, although it can cause communication to fail if it is not resolved correctly. For language models to communicate effectively and in a human-like fashion, they must learn how to recognize and utilize underspecified language. This thesis argues that …
Capturing And Processing Dynamic Holistic Scene For Enhanced Vision, Ziyuan Qu
Capturing And Processing Dynamic Holistic Scene For Enhanced Vision, Ziyuan Qu
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The world’s information can be conceptualized as a holistic scene, often represented as a four-dimensional vector encapsulating spatial coordinates (x, y, z) and temporal data (t). Advancements in human technology have facilitated the measurement of this feature vector through various sensors. For instance, a video captures spatial dimensions (x, y) with temporal resolution (t), while sonar pulses gauge depth (z). Leveraging these captures, we can easily perform post-modification of a scene and provide computationally enhanced perception and visual results. However, capturing with only one type of sensor poses challenges, especially when capturing surround view (360◦ viewpoint) images is impossible or …
Embodied Visions: Interactive Installations That Reimagine Bodily Presence In Digital Imaging Apparatuses As Shadows, Yunzi Shi
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Contextualized within a history of technological development, the evolution of imaging devices and technologies is accompanied by the abstraction of spatial relationships between the body of the observer, the apparatus, and physical reality, which leads to disembodying experiences for the observing subject. Compared with devices and interactive experiences, critical reflection on the epistemological impact of digital imaging devices has less priority in computational imaging and human-computer interaction research. Taking an artistic approach, this thesis describes Embodied Visions, an exhibition featuring three interactive installations exploring the technical infrastructure for imaging and reflecting on the (dis)embodied experiences in the digital age. …

The way users perceive and use information systems artefacts has been mainly studied from the notion of behavioral beliefs, deliberate cognitive efforts, and physical actions performed by human actors to produce certain outcomes. The next generation of information systems, however, can sense, respond, and adapt to environments without necessitating similar cognitive efforts, physical contact, or explicit instructions to operate. Therefore, by leveraging theories of consciousness and technology use, this research aims to advance an alternative understanding of the "use" associated with the next generation of IS artefacts that do not require deliberate cognitive efforts, physical manipulation, or explicit instructions to …

Dr. John Snow And The Nineteenthcentury British Cholera Crisis, Betsy A. Maughan
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
During the nineteenth century, Britain underwent attacks from a silent, determined killer. Invisible to the naked eye, this sinister enemy invaded towns, villages and homes with unforgiving stealth and cruelty. Lives were changed forever as panic, terror, and death overtook human habitats. The sneaky menace was Asiatic cholera. Although the first devastating British attack occurred during 1831-1832, London was fortunate enough to stay out of its destructive path. Luck ran out, however, as the second assault occurred during 1848-1849, consuming a good part of the city. Dr. John Snow, English physician, anesthetist and epidemiologist, dedicated most of his life to …

Loneliness And Parental Relationships Among College Students, Alanna James, Charlie Barna
Symposium of Student Scholars
The transition to adulthood is a unique developmental period that involves rapid changes in youths’ individual development and social contexts, which can involve leaving behind familiar support networks (Eeske et al,. 2015). Common experiences during the transition to adulthood, like leaving home, pursuing college, and entering the workforce can leave individuals feeling marginalized and cutoff (Mathews et al,. 2022). Loneliness is a subjective feeling experienced by individuals in all age demographics (Matthews et al,. 2022). Despite a wide array of research on social connectedness interventions for older adults and people with physical disabilities (Zagic et al,. 2021), there is little …

River cross-sections are often extracted using field surveys at measured intervals. This field-oriented approach allows for a tangible relationship between the data and its collector but at the expense of finance, time, labor, and potentially the environment. With the advancement of geospatial tools, such data can be found online, extracted, and even analyzed with contemporary Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a completely virtual setting, transcending the need for fieldwork in select project topics. We tested this approach with the help of ArcGIS Pro software on the Vishnu Springs headwater stream located in the Western Illinois region of the Upper Mississippi …
