Delirium On Admission To The Cicu, Spencer Wittmeyer, Jaime Silva-Gburek, Kelly S. Tieves
Delirium On Admission To The Cicu, Spencer Wittmeyer, Jaime Silva-Gburek, Kelly S. Tieves
Research Days
Background: Delirium is increasingly recognized in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) with an incidence up to 67% and is associated with worse outcomes including increased mortality, prolonged hospitalization, and increased rates of intubation and mechanical circulatory support. The Cornell Assessment for Pediatric Delirium (CAPD) is the only validated tool for the diagnosis of delirium in the pediatric population. The CAPD may be limited in children with developmental disabilities as it does not account for baseline ability in scoring. Prior work has identified low specificity for the CAPD in children with developmental disabilities and those requiring mechanical ventilation. This …

Fusing Classic Motion Energy Models And Deep Learning For Coarse-To-Fine Moving Object Segmentation, Matthias Tangemann, Matthias Kümmerer, Matthias Bethge
MODVIS Workshop
Classic motion energy models are able to predict a wide range of physiological and behavioral aspects of motion perception in humans. Whether these models can be used as a basis for higher-level tasks, such as moving object segmentation, has however hardly been explored yet. Here, we present a model that combines a motion energy representation with recent computer vision approaches for figure-ground segmentation of naturalistic stimuli. We find that unlike established motion segmentation models but similar to humans, our model generalizes to random-dot stimuli when only trained on RGB videos.

The Exodus Of Filipino Teachers To Uzbekistan: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Frank Angelo Pacala
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Filipino teachers drawn to Uzbekistan were attracted by the prestige and mission of its government schools, bringing world-class teaching experience from numerous countries. This departure of Filipino teachers to Uzbekistan is the focus of a hermeneutic phenomenological study that discloses a valuable tapestry of themes that capture the intricate quality of the educators’ journey. The Filipino teachers who joined this study were employed for a minimum of two years. This study was performed through semi structured interviews, and the data went through structural, thematic analysis, exposing a narrative covering distinct themes. First, the resilience and adaptability of the international educators …
Kohlhaas V. State: Encouraging Democratic Reform Through Constitutional Flexibility, Allyson Barkley, Connor Sakati
Kohlhaas V. State: Encouraging Democratic Reform Through Constitutional Flexibility, Allyson Barkley, Connor Sakati
Alaska Law Review
In the spirit of democracy reform, Alaska recently adopted a jungle primary and ranked choice voting electoral system for all state-wide elections. In Kohlhaas v. State, the Alaska Supreme Court upheld this reform against numerous state and federal constitutional challenges. While doing so, the court avoided rigid constitutional interpretations that would have frozen the electoral system in its current first-past-the-post state. Moreover, the court refused to credit the plaintiff's speculation about the hypothetical malign effects of ranked-choice voting, placing the burden to produce hard evidence of their critiques on RCV's opponents. Alaska can serve as a model for other …
Statistical Analysis Of Stream Sediments In The Mt. Freegold Area Of The Dawson Range, Central Yukon Territory, Canada, Heiko Mueller
Statistical Analysis Of Stream Sediments In The Mt. Freegold Area Of The Dawson Range, Central Yukon Territory, Canada, Heiko Mueller
Geosciences
The study uses data and samples from a 2009 and 2012 stream sediment sampling program, conducted in part by the author. With the aim to identify gold-bearing prospects, a data set of 417 samples was digested with aqua regia and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). I had leftover material from the original samples reanalyzed by ICP-MS after 4 acid (nitric + hydrochloric + hydrofluoric + perchloric) digestion. I compared the compositional data for the two sample sets (308 samples, 45 elements). Accuracy and precision (reproducibility) for all elements of the aqua regia sample set is noticeable lower …
Storminess In The Bering Sea: Integrating Instrumentation Data With Local And Indigenous Knowledge To Support Flood Mitigation Strategies In Goodnews Bay And St. Paul Island, N/A N/A
Geosciences
Extratropical cyclones in the Bering Sea have the potential to cause widespread damage to the coastline of western Alaska, a threat that disproportionately affects Indigenous communities that inhabit these remote regions. A paucity of historical and instrumentation data in these regions, combined with the potential for increases in coastal hazards as a result of climate change, hinders coastal resilience at the local level. To address this problem, this study incorporates local and Indigenous Knowledge into a historical assessment of storm impacts in two communities in the Bering Sea, St. Paul Island and Goodnews Bay, to partially fill these gaps and …
A Method For Automatic Surface Water Extent Mapping From Sentinel-1 Sar Data For Improved Response To Weather Related Hazards, Thomas J. Meyer
A Method For Automatic Surface Water Extent Mapping From Sentinel-1 Sar Data For Improved Response To Weather Related Hazards, Thomas J. Meyer
Geosciences
Torrential rains, flooding, and storm surges are all considered meteorological and hydrological hazards. These hazards can quickly transition into disasters whenever they begin to effect human life or infrastructure. When these disasters occur, they can lead to devastating outcomes such as damage or complete loss of infrastructure, reduced crop yields and related impacts on food security, as well as risks to human life. For decades, these events have been monitored and tracked primarily from visible/infrared sensors. Unfortunately, flooding and storm surges often occur during extensive weather and cloud cover conditions, which can make monitoring these hazards across large spatial scales …
Deep Learning Detection And Quantification Of Volcanic Thermal Signals In Infrared Satellite Data, Pablo Saunders-Shultz
Deep Learning Detection And Quantification Of Volcanic Thermal Signals In Infrared Satellite Data, Pablo Saunders-Shultz
Geosciences
Volcanic eruptions pose hazards to human lives and livelihoods (Loughlin et al., 2015). To mitigate these hazards, volcano monitoring groups aim to detect signs of unrest and eruption as early as possible. Prior to eruption volcanoes may show various signals of unrest, including: increased surface temperatures, surface deformation, increased seismicity, increased degassing, and more. Here we focus on one approach to monitor volcanic unrest: detecting high-temperature localized volcanic heat emissions, otherwise known as hotspots. The presence of hotspots can indicate subsurface and surface volcanic processes that precede, or coincide with, eruptions. Space-borne infrared sensors can identify hotspots in near-real-time; however, …
Sediment Characteristics And Economic Potential Of Large Methane Seeps In Esieh Lake, Nw, Janelle Marie Sharp
Sediment Characteristics And Economic Potential Of Large Methane Seeps In Esieh Lake, Nw, Janelle Marie Sharp
Geosciences
My thesis evaluates lake sediment characteristics and how they have been affected as large geologic methane (CH₄) seeps formed in Esieh Lake (informal name), a lake in Northwest Alaska. I provide extensive background of the lake, including a synthesis of studies and reports that characterize the geology around this lake which, to date, contains the largest known CH₄ seeps in the Arctic. In addition to providing background information on Esieh Lake and characterizing the lake's sediments, I evaluate the economic potential for the CH₄ seeps and compare flux values to natural gas projects which were previously completed in Alaska and …

Synthesis, Characterization And Cytotoxicities Of Novel Organoplatinum(Iv) Complexes, Marcus O. Cogley
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the world. In 2023, nearly 300,000 new cases of breast cancer were projected in the U.S. alone. When treating breast cancer, several therapies are utilized, often including chemotherapy. Organoplatinum(IV) complexes are among the newer chemotherapy drugs being developed as an alternative to cisplatin, the first platinumbased anticancer drug. Two novel organoplatinum(IV) complexes: [Pt(CH₃)₂X₂{bipy-(CO₂H)₂}] (X = Br, I) have been isolated and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopic data were also collected to confirm these new compounds and provide useful reference values. The anticancer potential …
Synthesis And Stereoselective Reduction Of Α-Fluoro-Β-Ketoesters By Ketoreductases, Matthew G. Vanagel
Synthesis And Stereoselective Reduction Of Α-Fluoro-Β-Ketoesters By Ketoreductases, Matthew G. Vanagel
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Using commercially available ketoreductase (KRED) enzymes, α-fluoro-β-hydroxy esters were stereoselectively synthesized from racemic α-fluoro-β-keto esters through dynamic reductive kinetic resolution (DYRKR). The α-fluoro-β-keto esters were synthesized via Reformatsky reactions between an aromatic aldehyde and ethyl bromofluoroacetate and subsequent oxidation with Dess Martin Periodinane (DMP). Two enzymes were selected for their ability to yield either syn or anti diastereomers. Three aromatic substrates were reduced in high diastereomeric and enantiomeric excess and good yields. The KRED products were derivatized with (R)- and (S)-α-methoxy-α-trifluoromethylphenylacetic acid (MTPA) and analyzed via ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy to determine their absolute stereochemistry via Mosher ester analysis. For the …
Differential Equations For Modeling Pathways Leading To Diabetes Onset, Viktoria Savatorova, Aleksei Talonov
Differential Equations For Modeling Pathways Leading To Diabetes Onset, Viktoria Savatorova, Aleksei Talonov
CODEE Journal
This paper presents a mathematical model that explains potential pathways leading to diabetes onset. By utilizing a system of nonlinear differential equations to describe the dynamics of the glucose regulatory system, the model can serve as a pedagogical tool for teaching and learning differential equations, dynamical systems, mathematical modeling, and introduction to biomathematics. Within this framework, students can analyze equilibrium solutions, investigate stability, assess parameter sensitivity, and explore the potential for bifurcations. Theoretical analysis is complemented by illustrative numerical examples. Instructors have the flexibility to adapt and incorporate suggested activities according to their teaching preferences and objectives.
