Epidemiological models—which help us understand and forecast the spread of infectious disease—can be valuable tools for public health. However, barriers exist that can make it difficult to employ epidemiological models routinely within the repertoire of public health planning. These barriers include technical challenges associated with constructing the models, challenges in obtaining appropriate data for model parameterization, and problems with clear communication of modeling outputs and uncertainty. To learn about the unique barriers and opportunities within the state of Arizona, we gathered a diverse set of 48 public health stakeholders for a day-and-a-half forum. Our research group was motivated specifically by …

Internet-Based Data Platforms Re-Define The Distributions Of Some Large Crabronid Wasps In Arkansas (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae), David E. Bowles
Insecta Mundi
The geographic distributions of three large wasps, Sphecius speciosus (Drury), Stictia carolina Fabricius, and Stizus brevipennis Walsh (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae), occurring in Arkansas are defined using museum specimens and three internet-based data platforms. The internet-based data platforms generally provided more county location records than museum records. Using data from internet sources for easily identified species can better serve to illustrate the known distributions for some species thus making for a powerful tool elucidating distributional patterns and conservation planning.

Identifying Barriers To Sustainability Of Dual Language Immersion Programs In Utah Schools, Jennifer Leigh Rowley
Identifying Barriers To Sustainability Of Dual Language Immersion Programs In Utah Schools, Jennifer Leigh Rowley
Theses and Dissertations
Dual Language Immersion (DLI) educational programming began in Utah in 2008. Within three short years, DLI programs in Utah schools had grown from 5 to 58 programs statewide. Presently, Utah now has over 301 DLI programs, including instruction in Spanish, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and German. DLI programs have many benefits and have attracted many student families. However, not much research has been done on program planning, implementation, and the sustainability of DLI programs within individual school cultures and climates. This study will examine the satisfaction level of faculty, staff, administrators, and parents at DLI schools (including how supported/understood each …
Neural Operator For Accelerating Coronal Magnetic Field Computations In Bifrost Mhd Model, Yutao Du
Neural Operator For Accelerating Coronal Magnetic Field Computations In Bifrost Mhd Model, Yutao Du
Theses
The application of the Tensorized Fourier Neural Operator (TFNO) to significantly enhance the computational efficiency of coronal magnetic field calculations within the Bifrost Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model is introduced in this study. Leveraging simulated data from the European Sunrise Science Data Center, the TFNO? an extension of the Fourier Neural Operator (FNO) that incorporates tensor decomposition for improved handling of high-dimensional data?is employed to solve time-varying partial differential equations (PDEs) over a 3D domain. The performance of the TFNO is compared with traditional machine learning methods, including Vision Transformer and CNN-RNN (encoder-decoder) architectures, to demonstrate its accuracy, computational efficiency, and scalability. …
Marking Estimation In Petri Nets Using Dynamic Mode Decomposition, Aditya Kale
Marking Estimation In Petri Nets Using Dynamic Mode Decomposition, Aditya Kale
Theses
Petri Nets (PNs) are a well-established framework for modeling and analyzing complex systems with interacting, concurrent processes. This thesis extends traditional Petri Net methodologies by integrating Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), a technique originally developed for fluid dynamics, to analyze Continuous Petri Nets (CPNs). By applying DMD to CPN marking evolution, this research constructs a reduced-order model that captures its dynamics through dynamic modes and eigenvalues, enabling prediction of future markings without detailed knowledge of transition firings or underlying deterministic models. The principal contribution of this research is extending the kit of tools available for analysis of CPN dynamics, providing insights …
The Next Strike: Pioneering Forward-Thinking Attack Techniques With Rowhammer In Dram Technologies, Nakul Kochar
The Next Strike: Pioneering Forward-Thinking Attack Techniques With Rowhammer In Dram Technologies, Nakul Kochar
Theses
In the realm of DRAM technologies this study investigates RowHammer vulnerabilities in DDR4 DRAM memory across various manufacturers, employing advanced multi-sided fault injection techniques to impose attack strategies directly on physical memory rows. Our novel approach, diverging from traditional victim-focused methods, involves strategically allocating virtual memory rows to their physical counterparts for more potent attacks. These attacks, exploiting the inherent weaknesses in DRAM design, are capable of inducing bit flips in a controlled manner to undermine system integrity. We employed a strategy that compromised system integrity through a nuanced approach of targeting rows situated at a distance of two rows …

A Survey Of Practical Haskell: Parsing, Interpreting, And Testing, Parker Landon
Honors Projects
Strongly typed pure functional programming languages like Haskell have historically been confined to academia as vehicles for programming language research. While features of functional programming have greatly influenced mainstream programming languages, the imperative programming style remains pervasive in practical software development. This paper illustrates the practical utility of Haskell and pure functional programming by exploring “hson,” a scripting language for processing JSON developed in Haskell. After introducing the relevant features of Haskell to the unfamiliar reader, this paper reveals how hson leverages functional programming to implement parsing, interpreting, and testing. By showcasing how Haskell’s language features enable the creation of …

Use Of Integrated English Language Development To Improve Long-Term English Learner Instruction, Rosanne Reid
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 2023, California schools served 1.2 million students designated English learners (EL-classified students). Most EL-classified students in grades 6-12 were considered long-term English learners. The problem addressed by this study is that LTEL-considered students have historically had the lowest academic achievement of any student group, despite federal and state mandates for instructional support through designated and integrated English language development (ELD). The purpose of this case study was to explore how content-area teachers at one California high school used components of integrated ELD to support LTEL-considered students in learning language, literacy, and content knowledge and how site and district administrators …

Language And The Lord Of The Rings: The Expansion Of A Universe, Thomas Beutz
Language And The Lord Of The Rings: The Expansion Of A Universe, Thomas Beutz
The Criterion
Tommy Beutz’s essay, “Language and The Lord of the Rings: The Expansion of a Universe” explores J.R.R. Tolkien’s world-building through the lens of linguistics. Beutz argues that Tolkien’s creation of Middle-Earth, anchored in his invented languages, extends beyond the bounds of the text. Drawing on Tolkien’s background as a philologist, Beutz contends that the languages of Middle-Earth are not mere literary devices but rather the foundation of its entire mythology. By examining linguistic markers embedded in the primary text, Beutz reveals how Tolkien hints at a larger world outside the narrative. Through an analysis of historical accounts and characters’ …

Development Of The Nebraska Department Of Transportation Winter Severity Index – Phase Ii, Mark Anderson, Curtis L. Walker, Thomas Kauzlarich
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
For the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), the Nebraska Winter Severity Index (NEWINS) provided an independent framework to calculate a winter season’s severity by categorizing individual winter storms. However, one of the greatest limitations of NEWINS is that it is not predictive. Thus, this study builds on the previously developed NEWINS by creating a predictive winter storm severity index known as NEWINS-Predictive (NEWINS-P). The quantitative precipitation forecast, snow accumulation, ice accumulation, and surface wind speed parameters from the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) are used to develop the five components composing the NEWINS-P framework. These components consist of snow severity …
Home For Good: How The Opt-In Element Added To Hb 547 Negatively Impacts Low-Income Homeschool Students In Texas, Nadine Cox
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
This comment addresses the relationship between a parent’s constitutional right to educate their child as they see fit and a child’s interest in receiving a robust education. The idea of a parent’s right to raise their child is a fundamental and long established one. However, activist have also raised concern regarding children who are educated at home. The concern centers around the idea that children have little to no access to extra-curricular activities, socialization, or other educational opportunities. Access to extra-curricular activities leads to a well-balanced education that prepares the child for whatever career the child desires. A child does …
Tribological Performance Of Ceramic On Textured Polyethylene Contact For Artificial Hip Implants, Sandhya Vaidyanathan
Tribological Performance Of Ceramic On Textured Polyethylene Contact For Artificial Hip Implants, Sandhya Vaidyanathan
Theses
Revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA) is an expensive and surgically risky procedure that is necessary in the case of a failed primary total hip arthroplasty (pTHA). The cause of failure in artificial hip joints is often rooted in the tribological performance of the bearing surfaces such as increased wear and reduced lubrication. Surface texturing is a surface modification technique which has been studied for aerospace and automotive applications and has shown promise in the biomedical field of artificial human joints in the last two decades. Several studies have been done to assess the tribological performance of introducing surface micro-textures as …

Central Bank Digital Currency, Monetary Policy, And Macroeconomy: Evidence From Indonesia, Syahid Izzulhaq, Akhmad Syakir Kurnia, Johan Beni Maharda
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This paper studies the impact of a universally accessible interest-bearing Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) on macroeconomic stability and monetary policy in Indonesia. For this end, we construct a simple reduced-form New Keynesian model calibrated corresponding to the monthly data for Indonesia from July 2005 to February 2022. We find that the CBDC regime significantly improves macroeconomic stability in Indonesia. In this regard, the CBDC rate, as the additional monetary policy instrument, responsively reacts to macroeconomic fluctuations and gives a significant impact on the demand side. Our results also suggest that monetary policy is more effective under the CBDC regime …

Application Of Secant Span In Medical Diagnosis, R. Narmadhagnanam, A. Edward Samuel
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Many common and specific characteristics engrave most diseases. Water-borne diseases differ slightly in their characteristics. Erroneous diagnoses can be attributed to shared characteristics. Current approaches tend to rely on imprecise diagnoses and lack robust techniques for differentiating between characteristics. Every illness also presents with specific symptoms. To assist doctors in approaching a likely diagnosis, the suggested method is successful in determining the connection between a class of sickness and the people with a specific pathology to the indications. Among n-valued interval neutrosophic sets, a secant span is proposed in this paper and a few of its attributes are talked about …
