For the past several decades, optimizing compilers have been aprimary area of focus in both industry and academia. This continued research interest is a testament to the complexity of thistask, primarily stemming from the vast number of parameters thatmust be explored to attain near-optimal results. One of the keycompiler optimizations is "Register Blocking (RB)" also known as"Register-level Tiling" or "unroll-and-jam". RB can strongly reducethe number of executed Load/Store (L/S) instructions, and as aconsequence the number of data accesses in memory hierarchy, but due to its inherent complexities, fine-tuning is essential for itseffective implementation. To address this problem, in this work anew …
How Are Entanglement Entropies Related To Entropy Bounds?, Emily Adlam
How Are Entanglement Entropies Related To Entropy Bounds?, Emily Adlam
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we seek to understand what current knowledge of entanglement entropies suggests about the appropriate way to interpret the covariant entropy bound. We first begin by arguing that just as in the classical case, a universal bound on the von Neumann entropy could have either an epistemic or ontological origin. We then consider several possible ways of explaining the bound as a consequence of features of the entanglement entropy. We discuss consider area laws in condensed matter and quantum field theory, arguing that they suggest an epistemic reading of the bound. We also discuss the ‘spacetime from entanglement’ …

Patient-derived xenografts (PDX) model human intra- and intertumoral heterogeneity in the context of the intact tissue of immunocompromised mice. Histologic imaging via hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining is routinely performed on PDX samples, which could be harnessed for computational analysis. Prior studies of large clinical H&E image repositories have shown that deep learning analysis can identify intercellular and morphologic signals correlated with disease phenotype and therapeutic response. In this study, we developed an extensive, pan-cancer repository of >1,000 PDX and paired parental tumor H&E images. These images, curated from the PDX Development and Trial Centers Research Network Consortium, had a …

Phosphorus (P) and TiO2 have been extensively studied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high specific capacities. However, P is limited by low electrical conductivity and significant volume changes during charge and discharge cycles, while TiO2 is hindered by low electrical conductivity and slow Li-ion diffusion. To address these issues, we synthesized organic–inorganic hybrid anode materials of P–polypyrrole (PPy) and TiO2–PPy, through in situ polymerization of pyrrole monomer in the presence of the nanoscale inorganic materials. These hybrid anode materials showed higher cycling stability and capacity compared to pure P and TiO2. The enhancements are attributed …

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face many barriers to meaningful inclusion, including limited language and communication skills. Professionals, such as speech-language pathologists (SLPs), can provide personalized instruction to promote skill development and inclusion. Providing opportunities for individuals to express preferences and choice, such as the multiple stimulus without replacement preference assessment (MSWO; DeLeon & Iwata 1996), within these programs, further increases skill acquisition and social interaction. However, limitations in professionals’ knowledge and skills in performing assessments can be another barrier to meaningful inclusion for individuals with IDD and traditional training methods can be challenging and time consuming. …

The Theological Method Of Thomas Aquinas In The Beatific Vision, Kent T. Maitland
The Theological Method Of Thomas Aquinas In The Beatific Vision, Kent T. Maitland
Liberty Theological Review
This essay posits that Thomas Aquinas’s Beatific Vision may not be a biblically accurate conception of the Christian’s eternal destiny because it is grounded in a problematic theological method. For Aquinas, theology is a science for deducing the saving knowledge of God, which can only be discovered through Scripture. The integrity of Scripture’s place of prominence, however, is undermined by the apparent usefulness of other sources for interpreting Scripture’s meaning. His use of other sources in interpreting Scripture is justified by a hermeneutic that emphasizes the importance of Scripture’s figurative meaning over the literal in determining its usefulness for theological …

Improved Efficiency And Sensitivity Analysis Of 3-D Agent-Based Model For Pain-Related Neural Activity In The Amygdala, Kayla Kraeuter, Carley Reith, Benedict J. Kolber, Rachael Miller Neilan
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
Neuropathic pain is caused by nerve injury and involves brain areas such as the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA). We developed the first 3-D agent-based model (ABM) of neuropathic pain-related neurons in the CeA using NetLogo3D. The execution time of a single ABM simulation using realistic parameters (e.g., 13,000 neurons and 22,000+ neural connections) is an important factor in the model’s usability. In this paper, we describe our efforts to improve the computational efficiency of our 3-D ABM, which resulted in a 28% reduction in execution time on average for a typical simulation. With this upgraded model, we performed …

Quasi – Monte Carlo Estimation For Functional Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Ruvini Jayamaha
Waldo Library Student Exhibits
Functional Data Analysis (FDA) is a topic of growing interest in the Statistics community. The data in FDA are smooth curves or surfaces in time or space which can be conceptualized as functions.
We propose a Functional Generalized Linear Mixed Model (FGLMM) to fit EEG data and estimate the parameters using Quasi-Monte Carlo Method.
This proposed model deals with non-Gaussian scalar response, functional predictor, and random effects. We relax the assumption of link and variance functions.

One fundamental problem in deep learning is understanding the excellent performance of deep Neural Networks (NNs) in practice. An explanation for the superiority of NNs is that they can realize a large family of complicated functions, i.e., they have powerful expressivity. The expressivity of a Neural Network with Piecewise Linear activations (PLNN) can be quantified by the maximal number of linear regions it can separate its input space into. In this paper, we provide several mathematical results needed for studying the linear regions of Convolutional Neural Networks with Piecewise Linear activations (PLCNNs), and use them to derive the maximal and …

Cross-exchange crypto trading presents inherent risks, particularly for centralized exchanges. Investors observe exacerbating crypto volatility and counterparty risk and would like to quantify these elements of crypto trades. The multiple exchanges require a multivariate view on the structures of risk spillover across exchanges. Here, a Multivariate Heterogeneous AutoRegression (MHAR) model is designed and analyzed, accommodating the stylized facts of crypto markets, including 24/7 trading and the long-memory effect on return variations. The proposed MHAR approach clearly reveals the intensity of interconnectedness among exchanges during extreme events, e.g., the Bitcoin market. Additionally, one observes extremely volatile eigenvector centralities of Futures Exchange …

Many modern mathematical proofs are very complex, checking them is difficult; as a result, errors sneak into published proofs, even into proofs published in highly reputable journals. Sometimes, the errors are repairable, but sometimes, it turns out that the supposedly proven result is actually wrong. When the error is not noticed for some time, the published result is used to prove many other results -- and when the error is eventually found, all these new results are invalidated. This happened several times. Since it is not realistic to more thoroughly check all the proofs, and we want to minimize the …

Why Angles Between Galactic Center Filaments And Galactic Plane Follow A Bimodal Distribution: A Symmetry-Based Explanation, Julio C. Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Recent observations have shown that the angles between the Galaxy Center filaments and the Galactic plane follow a bimodal distribution: a large number of filaments are approximately orthogonal to the Galactic plane, a large number of filaments are approximately parallel to the Galactic plane, and much fewer filaments have other orientations. In this paper, we show this bimodal distribution can be explained by natural geometric symmetries.
