The Role Of Apparatus In Problem-Solving And Model Construction And Contemplation, Maré E. Sutphen, Laura Ríos
The Role Of Apparatus In Problem-Solving And Model Construction And Contemplation, Maré E. Sutphen, Laura Ríos
Physics
Problem-solving serves a crucial role in learning physics, as it is required that students absorb laws, principles, and concepts and arrange their understanding in a structure accessible for application. Further, these arrangements necessarily include methods and strategies gained from past experience, required for the implementation of these structures. Although tedious, problem-solving requires not only the arrangement of knowledge, but the construction and contemplation of models of physical phenomena. Research shows that while amateur problem-solvers typically approach problems by stringing together equations, experts will first look at the larger picture of the physical phenomena at hand, and through a “series of …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study focuses on assessing the efficacy of m-learning as a tool for learning Quechua. It uses a unique method of sentiment neutrosophic sentiment analysis, which is based on neutroAlgebra. In the current scenario, where the use of mobile platforms for learning indigenous languages is gaining significance, there is a noticeable absence of methods that can effectively handle the intricate and uncertain nature of users' perceptions towards these systems. Existing literature provides limited solutions that effectively integrate mathematical precision with the ability to recognize and respond to emotions and ambiguous opinions. This article addresses the lack of methodology by utilizing …
Nonlocal Frameworks For Nonlinear Conservation Laws And Advection-Diffusion Processes, Anh Thuong Vo
Nonlocal Frameworks For Nonlinear Conservation Laws And Advection-Diffusion Processes, Anh Thuong Vo
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Conservation laws are fundamental principles that play an important role in modeling various phenomena in physics, chemistry, and biology. However, their limitations, such as the development of shocks despite smooth initial conditions, are well known. The nonlocal model framework can be used to overcome these challenges. Nonlocal frameworks utilize integral operators that mimic differential operators but also incorporate long-range interactions within a finite horizon. This approach not only allows for non-smooth solutions, but also provides flexibility in modeling different phenomena. This study investigates the convergence of nonlocal divergence operators, defined with a general flux density function, to their classical counterparts. …
Integrating Remote Sensing And Machine Learning To Determine Past, Current And Future Crop Water Use From The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, Moaz Ishag
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The agriculture sector is a significant consumer of water, and sustainable water use begins with monitoring irrigated land. Delineating irrigated land supports decision-makers and promotes the sustainable use of this crucial resource. This study focuses on the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS), the largest aquifers in the world, which spans Egypt, Sudan, Libya, and Chad. The study aims to: 1) quantify the increase in irrigated hectares (both pivot and non-pivot) from 2000-2001 to 2023-2024; 2) identify major irrigated crop types and their water requirements; and 3) quantify groundwater crop water use from the NSAS using remote sensing via the Google …
Formalizing The Santa Fe Water Bank, Walker Williamson
Formalizing The Santa Fe Water Bank, Walker Williamson
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Water users depend on institutional flexibility to efficiently allocate water in legally constrained and overallocated basins. Adaptive market-based mechanisms such as water banking proffer flexibility and fairness, but often face practical challenges fueled by empirical and institutional uncertainties. The Santa Fe Water Bank is a case in point. The City of Santa Fe transfers agricultural water rights from the Middle Rio Grande to its municipal Water Bank for sustainable development. Combined uncertainties in this process can obscure latent changes in water balance and foster misunderstanding, potentially provoking transfer protests. This study develops a formal model clarifying the interrelated institutional and …

Lead toxicity has hindered the wide applications of lead halide perovskites in optoelec- tronics and bioimaging. A significant amount of effort has been made to synthesize lead-free halide perovskites as alternatives to lead halide perovskites. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of synthesizing CsSnI3-based powders mechanochemically with dual light emissions under ambi- ent conditions from CsI and SnI2 powders. The formed CsSnI3-based powders are divided into CsSnI3-dominated powders and CsSnI3-contained powders. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light of 365 nm in wavelength, the CsSnI3-dominated powders emit green light with a wavelength centered at 540 nm, and the CsSnI3-contained powders …
Pressure Dependence Of The Rate Coefficient Of Ozone Using Master Equation Simulations Of Recombination Kinetics, Adil Yermek
Pressure Dependence Of The Rate Coefficient Of Ozone Using Master Equation Simulations Of Recombination Kinetics, Adil Yermek
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The ozone layer in Earth’s atmosphere is distinctive and crucial for the evolution of life. Investigating the process of ozone formation aids in comprehending the evolution of our planet’s atmosphere. The reaction that forms ozone is O + O2 → O3. One can describe ozone forming reaction approximately using Lindeman mechanism, which is very handy. However, its limitation arises from assuming a steady-state approximation, which neglects transient dynamics and complexities that could impact reaction kinetics under non-equilibrium conditions. For this reason, Master Equation simulations can be seen as an enhancement or extension of the Lindemann mechanism, providing a thorough understanding …

Theoretical And Experimental Evaluation Of The Electronic Relaxation Mechanisms Of 2-Pyrimidinone: The Primary Uva Absorbing Moiety Of The Dna And Rna (6–4) Photolesion, Sean J. Hoehn, Sarah E. Krul, Carlos E. Crespo-Hernández
Faculty Scholarship
The (6–4) photolesion is a key photodamage that occurs when two adjacent pyrimidine bases in a DNA strand bond together. To better understand how the absorption of UVB and UVA radiation by the 2-pyrimidinone moiety in a (6–4) lesion can damage DNA, it is important to study the electronic deactivation mechanism of its 2-pyrimidinone chromophore. This study employs theoretical (MS-CASPT2/cc-pVDZ level) and experimental (steady state and femtosecond broadband spectroscopic) methods to elucidate the photochemical relaxation mechanisms of 2-(1H)-pyrimidinone and 1-methyl-2-(1H)-pyrimidinone in aqueous solution (pH 7.4). In short, excitation at 320 nm leads to the population of the S11(ππ*) …

This study focuses on improving the functionalities of milk protein concentrate (MPC) using a nonthermal plasma jet and plasma-activated water (PAW) with atmospheric air and nitrogen as source gases. The 5% and 10% MPC dispersions were directly treated with a plasma jet, and PAW was used to make the MPC dispersions. The dispersions were analyzed for changes in protein structure and functional properties. The treatment altered the secondary structure of MPC protein structure by increasing β-components and changing the order of random coils. The solubility of the PAW-treated 5% protein dispersions doubled due to plasma-induced modification of hydrophilic and covalent …

Increasing genetic and phenotypic data size is critical for understanding the genetic determinants of diseases. Evidently, establishing practical means for collaboration and data sharing among institutions is a fundamental methodological barrier for performing high-powered studies. As the sample sizes become more heterogeneous, complex statistical approaches, such as generalized linear mixed effects models, must be used to correct for the confounders that may bias results. On another front, due to the privacy concerns around Protected Health Information (PHI), genetic information is restrictively protected by sharing according to regulations such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This limits data sharing …

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes and has become the leading cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. A considerable number of DN patients have experienced irreversible end-stage renal disease progression due to the inability to diagnose the disease early. Therefore, reliable biomarkers that are helpful for early diagnosis and treatment are identified. The migration of immune cells to the kidney is considered to be a key step in the progression of DN-related vascular injury. Therefore, finding markers in this process may be more helpful for the early diagnosis and progression prediction of DN.

Leaf shape is considered to be one of the most significant agronomic traits in crop breeding. However, the molecular basis underlying leaf morphogenesis in cotton is still largely unknown. In this study, through genetic mapping and molecular investigation using a natural cotton mutant cu with leaves curling upward, the causal gene GHCU is successfully identified as the key regulator of leaf flattening. Knockout of GHCU or its homolog in cotton and tobacco using CRISPR results in abnormal leaf shape. It is further discovered that GHCU facilitates the transport of the HD protein KNOTTED1-like (KNGH1) from the adaxial to the abaxial …

Inherited ichthyosis comprises a series of heterogeneous dermal conditions; it mainly manifests as widespread hyperkeratosis, xerosis and scaling of the skin. At times, overlapping symptoms require differential diagnosis between ichthyosis and several other similar disorders. The present study reports seven patients with confirmed or suspected to be associated with ichthyosis by conducting a thorough clinical and genetic investigation. Genetic testing was conducted using whole-exome sequencing, with Sanger sequencing as the validation method. The MEGA7 program was used to analyze the conservation of amino acid residues affected by the detected missense variants. The enrolled patients exhibited ichthyosis-like but distinct clinical manifestations. …

Effects Of Diazepam, D-Amphetamine, And Morphine On Rats’ Choices Between Food Alone And Food With Delayed Shock, Mackenzie Baranski
All NMU Master's Theses
Repeated choices that result in immediate reinforcing consequences followed by delayed aversive consequences are commonly associated with failures in “self-control”. The present study evaluated acute effects of diazepam, d-amphetamine, and morphine on rats’ choices using a variable-delay procedure that arranged choices involving conflicting-valence consequences. Rats pressed response levers to choose between a single-valence consequence (1 food pellet) and a conflicting-valence consequence (3 food pellets followed by a delayed shock). In each condition, the delay to shock varied systematically in a fixed sequence across blocks of trials of a session. After choice was stable, rats were exposed to acute administration …

The first record of captive-bred red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) dates to 1896 when a breeding enterprise emerged in the provinces of Atlantic Canada. Because its domestication happened during recent history, the red fox offers a unique opportunity to examine the genetic diversity of an emerging domesticated species in the context of documented historical and economic influences. In particular, the historical record suggests that North American and Eurasian farm-bred populations likely experienced different demographic trajectories. Here, we focus on the likely impacts of founder effects and genetic drift given historical trends in fox farming on North American and Eurasian farms. A …

Extracting compiler-provenance-related information (e.g., the source of a compiler, its version, its optimization settings, and compiler-related functions) is crucial for binary-analysis tasks such as function fingerprinting, detecting code clones, and determining authorship attribution. However, the presence of obfuscation techniques has complicated the efforts to automate such extraction. In this paper, we propose an efficient and resilient approach to provenance identification in obfuscated binaries using advanced pre-trained computer-vision models. To achieve this, we transform the program binaries into images and apply a two-layer approach for compiler and optimization prediction. Extensive results from experiments performed on a large-scale dataset show that the …

Generalized Optimal Transport And Mean Field Control Problems For Reaction-Diffusion Systems With High-Order Finite Element Computation, Guosheng Fu, Stanley Osher, Will Pazner, Wuchen Li
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We design and compute a class of optimal control problems for reaction-diffusion systems. They form mean field control problems related to multi-density reaction-diffusion systems. To solve proposed optimal control problems numerically, we first apply high-order finite element methods to discretize the space-time domain and then solve the optimal control problem using augmented Lagrangian methods (ALG2). Numerical examples, including generalized optimal transport and mean field control problems between Gaussian distributions and image densities, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modeling and computational methods for mean field control problems involving reaction-diffusion equations/systems.

Summer camps are widespread in many countries and have a long history. Their contribution to children’s and young people’s leisure and recreation is widely acknowledged, as is their usefulness as an educational resource. That large numbers of children and young people across Europe attend summer camps is well-known; according to Eurofound (2020), most of the twenty-seven countries analyzed record student attendance at camps, and in twelve countries (including Spain) over 50% of young people take part. However, another study carried out in the member countries of the European Union (Plantenga & Remery, 2017) stated that when the availability, use, and …

Patient-Specific Hemodynamic Modeling For Optimizing Left Ventricular Assist Device And Right Heart Health, Holly Felice Grant
Theses and Dissertations
LVAD speed optimization is essential for efficient LVAD therapy and to minimize complications. However, the ideal LVAD speed is unknown and must be tailored for each patient. The interplay between the LVAD, systemic, and pulmonary circulations is critical and should be considered during optimization. A computational hemodynamic model that can be tailored for each patient may provide clinicians with useful guidance and reduce the need for repeated invasive studies. This study sought to customize and evaluate a patient-specific LVAD hemodynamic optimization model.
We conducted a retrospective analysis on 25 patients implanted with HM3 and who underwent right heart catheterization (RHC) …
Existence Of Smooth Solutions For The Landau Equation With Hard Potentials, Shelly Ann Taylor
Existence Of Smooth Solutions For The Landau Equation With Hard Potentials, Shelly Ann Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is concerned with the Landau equation, an integro-differential equation that models the particle density of a plasma as it evolves in phase space. The main topic is the (large-data) local existence of classical solutions to the Landau equation in the case of hard potentials (γ ∈ (0, 1]). Solutions have previously been constructed by Chaturvedi [SIAM. J. Math. Anal., 55(5), 5345–5385, 2023] for initial data in an exponentially-weighted Sobolev space of order 10, but it is not a priori clear whether these solutions have more regularity than the initial data. We improve Chaturvedi’s existence result in two ways: …
Increasing Optical Channel Capacity By Integrating Pam4 Modulation With Wavelength Division Multiplexing And Spatial Domain Multiplexing, Swaroopini Harish
Increasing Optical Channel Capacity By Integrating Pam4 Modulation With Wavelength Division Multiplexing And Spatial Domain Multiplexing, Swaroopini Harish
Theses and Dissertations
Spatial division multiplexing (SDM) is a technique used in telecommunications and networking to increase data transmission capacity over optical fiber communication channels. This multiplexing technique spatially reuses optical frequencies by allocating different spatial locations for inputs based on their inject angles. The signals travel in a helical pattern within the carrier fiber and exit as concentric rings. SDM enables more efficient utilization of available bandwidth and improved communication performance. In four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), each symbol represents a combination of four possible signal levels instead of the two levels in binary modulation. The four levels are denoted in different …
