Self-Efficacy And Attitudes Associate With Undergraduates’ Library Research Intentions: A Theoretically-Grounded Investigation, Alex Pfundt, Laurel M. Peterson

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Undergraduates’ use of academic libraries is associated with academic achievement, but library research resources are underutilized, and little is known about what factors contribute to students’ use of these resources. A random sample of undergraduate students from a historically women’s college in the United States (N = 207; 59.2% white; 87.7% female or transfemale, 5.9% gender queer, 5.9% gender non-conforming, and 0.5% other gender) reported on their information literacy self-efficacy, attitudes toward research in undergraduate courses, and behavioral intentions to engage with library resources and services using an anonymous online questionnaire. Controlling for past library research and class year, …

Challenges Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Testing, Rongrong Huang, Junyan Shi, Ruhan Wei, Jieli Li Aug 2024

Challenges Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Testing, Rongrong Huang, Junyan Shi, Ruhan Wei, Jieli Li

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), primarily synthesized in the liver, was initially discovered due to its capacity to replicate the metabolic effects of insulin. Subsequently, it emerged as a key regulator of the actions of growth hormone (GH), managing critical processes like cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Notably, IGF-1 displays a longer half-life compared to GH, making it less susceptible to factors that may affect GH concentrations. Consequently, the measurement of IGF-1 proves to be more specific and sensitive when diagnosing conditions such as acromegaly or GH deficiency. The recognition of the existence of IGFBPs and their potential to interfere …

Kritisamhita: A Machine Learning Dataset Of South Indian Classical Music Audio Clips With Tonic Classification, Samhita Konduri, Kriti V. Pendyala, Vishnu S. Pendyala Aug 2024

Kritisamhita: A Machine Learning Dataset Of South Indian Classical Music Audio Clips With Tonic Classification, Samhita Konduri, Kriti V. Pendyala, Vishnu S. Pendyala

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

There are currently a limited number of Indian classical music datasets, especially those large enough and with useful annotations, particularly the subtler ones, such as the tonic, for training classification or prediction models. The dataset described in this paper is created with useful tonic annotations, to fill this gap. The tonic pitch, or base pitch, plays an important role in music, so much so that it is sometimes called the keynote. The vocalists and the accompanying instrumental ensemble are fine-tuned to this keynote to render the composition. The first and second authors of this paper, who are vocalists themselves, recorded …

Regrounding The Unworldly: Carnap’S Politically Engaged Logical Pluralism, Noah Friedman-Biglin Aug 2024

Regrounding The Unworldly: Carnap’S Politically Engaged Logical Pluralism, Noah Friedman-Biglin

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Recent discussions of logical pluralism trace its origins to Rudolf Carnap’s principle of tolerance; indeed, the principle is seen as one of Carnap’s lasting philosophical contributions. In this paper, I will argue that Carnap’s reasons for adopting this principle are not purely logical, but are rather founded in the Vienna Circle’s manifesto—a programmatic document that brings the Circle’s philosophical work together with a program of social change. Building on work by Uebel, Romizi, and others, I argue that we must understand the principle in light of Carnap’s role in writing the manifesto, and thus as integrated into the larger philosophical …

Evaluating The Treatment Utility Of Universal Screening For Social-Emotional And Behavioral Risk, Rebecca Wagner Lovelace Aug 2024

Evaluating The Treatment Utility Of Universal Screening For Social-Emotional And Behavioral Risk, Rebecca Wagner Lovelace

Dissertations

Universal screening is a proactive method used by schools to identify social-emotional and behavioral (SEB) difficulties experienced by students to inform necessary intervention supports and practices. Early detection of SEB problems in young children is imperative to effective treatment, but there is currently little guidance and research to support effective use of universal screening data, particularly for SEB risk, to inform treatment. The current study followed up on studies that examine the use of universal screening to inform intervention decision making (e.g., treatment utility) for SEB risk. An alternating treatment design was used to assess treatment effectiveness of matched and …

Creating A Virtual Hierarchy From A Relational Database, Yucong Mo Aug 2024

Creating A Virtual Hierarchy From A Relational Database, Yucong Mo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In data management and modeling, the value of the hierarchical model is that it does not require expensive JOIN operations at runtime; once the hierarchy is built, the relationships among data are embedded in the tree-like hierarchical structure, and thus querying data could be much faster than using a relational database. Today most data is stored in relational databases, but if the data were stored in hierarchies, what would these hierarchies look like? And more importantly, would this transition lead to a more efficient database? This thesis explores these questions by introducing a set of algorithms to convert a relational …

Implementing General Moment Equations For Parallel Closures In Nimrod, Hankyu Lee Aug 2024

Implementing General Moment Equations For Parallel Closures In Nimrod, Hankyu Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Understanding how magnetic fields impact plasma transport is essential for improving the efficiency of thermonuclear fusion power plants. To address the transport problem, both plasma fluid equations and Maxwell’s equations must be solved. To solve these equations, it is necessary to derive closure relations that allow the system to be closed. Previous closure models are useful for describing the behavior of high-collisionality plasma but are not effective at low collisionality. To obtain closure relations valid for low collisionality, the first-order drift kinetic equation must be solved.

This study presents methods for numerically obtaining parallel closures for NIMROD code by deriving …

Utilizing Bayesian Optimization In Technoeconomic Analyses For Integrated Energy Systems, Anthoney Griffith Aug 2024

Utilizing Bayesian Optimization In Technoeconomic Analyses For Integrated Energy Systems, Anthoney Griffith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Technoeconomic analysis is a key element in the study of integrated energy systems. The goal of this analysis is the sizing of technologies resulting in the best economic outcome for the system. The evaluation of this system involves sizing the components and simulating the resulting market to determine an outcome. This simulation incorporates multiple possible values of uncertain parameters like grid price and wind generation. This problem is currently approached with the gradient descent optimization method. An alternative approach, Bayesian optimization, sees success on simple problems of a similar nature to technoeconomic analyses. These results motivate applying Bayesian optimization as …

Ensemble Machine Learning At The Edge Using The Codec Classifier Structure And Weak Learners Guided By Mutual Information, Aj Beckwith Aug 2024

Ensemble Machine Learning At The Edge Using The Codec Classifier Structure And Weak Learners Guided By Mutual Information, Aj Beckwith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The Codec Classifier is a low-computation, low-memory tree ensemble method that dramatically improves feasibility of image classification on resource-constrained edge devices. It achieves advantages over other tree ensemble methods due the separation of encoder and decoder tasks in the classifier. The encoder partitions feature space, and the decoder labels the regions in the partition. This functional separation of tasks enables the encoder design (partitioning) to be guided by maximizing the mutual information (MI) between class labels and the features (i.e. the encoded representation of the data) without regard to the error performance of the classifier. Experiments show maximizing MI leads …

A Position Allocation Approach To The Battery Electric Bus Charging Problem, Alexander Brown Aug 2024

A Position Allocation Approach To The Battery Electric Bus Charging Problem, Alexander Brown

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

With an increasing adoption of Battery Electric Bus (BEB) fleets, developing a reliable charging schedule is vital to a successful migration from their fossil fuel counterparts. In this work, a BEB charging scheduling framework that considers fixed route schedules, multiple charger types, and battery dynamics is modeled as a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP). The MILP is modeled after the Berth Allocation Problem (BAP) in a modified form known as the Position Allocation Problem (PAP). The optimization coordinates BEB charging to ensure that each vehicle remains above a specified charge percentage. The model also minimizes the total number of chargers …

Development Of A High-Throughput Methodology For Vibration-Based Fatigue Tests, Brandon Alexander Furman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Global efforts towards the development of additively manufactured materials, biomaterials, metamaterials, self-healing materials, and composites have reached a staggering pace. With new materials being developed on a near-daily basis, it is more important than ever to be able to quickly and precisely quantify their mechanical performance. However, one of the most important mechanical properties, fatigue life, is notoriously time consuming to measure. Consequently, fatigue parameters are often calculated based on small sample sizes, resulting in high uncertainty of the measured parameters. In this dissertation a high-throughput approach to fatigue measurements is developed. This technique allows for multiple samples to accumulate …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Landscapes change over time in response to movements of the Earth’s crust and the effects of climate. This dissertation examines how these factors shape different landscapes, focusing on erosion of river canyons in elevated plateaus, how the transport history in quartz sand may be encoded in its properties, and how a paleo-delta has formed in response to sea-level change and fault displacement. I use dating techniques, field methods, and topographic analyses to offer insight into erosional patterns and rates in different landscapes.

Rivers can take a long time to adjust to changes in boundary conditions, even after those changes have …

Silica Fault Mirror Development Along The Cordillera Blanca Detachment Fault, Peru, Kayla Michelle Chaudoir Aug 2024

Silica Fault Mirror Development Along The Cordillera Blanca Detachment Fault, Peru, Kayla Michelle Chaudoir

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Earthquakes occur along planes of geologic weakness called faults. Thin, light-reflective surfaces on faults are called fault mirrors and often considered signatures of previous earthquakes along these faults. The Cordillera Blanca mountain range in the Peruvian Andes provides a natural laboratory to explore meter scale exposures of fault mirrors. Three naturally formed fault mirror samples were collected from the Cordillera Blanca detachment fault which runs along the edge of the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. Prior work on this fault reveals that it is capable of destructive earthquakes every few thousand years and is a significant earthquake hazard to the surrounding …

Understanding flat-slab subduction is crucial as it involves the horizontal movement of an oceanic plate beneath a continental margin over a long distance. This tectonic process is widespread yet not fully understood, particularly regarding how it influences the chemical makeup of the continental plate and recycling in the hydrosphere. By analyzing isotopes, which are variations of certain elements found in minerals and water, we can gain insights into the sources of chemicals and geological processes at play. Our study area included six locations within the Navajo volcanic field (NVF), a region in the Colorado Plateau. We analyzed 23 lower crustal …

Informed Intervention Design, Deployment, And Analysis For The Computer Science Classroom, Jaxton J. Winder Aug 2024

Informed Intervention Design, Deployment, And Analysis For The Computer Science Classroom, Jaxton J. Winder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Improving the teaching of computer science is a challenging task. Educators and computing education researchers devote large amounts of time, energy, and resources towards doing so effectively. One of the ways this is done is through research-informed design, deployment, and analysis of targeted interventions to the classroom. This thesis will detail research conducted at Utah State University targeting classroom interventions: centered around their design, deployment, and analysis.

One of these interventions aims to tackle student procrastination through the offering of “grace points”–forgiving a small amount of mistakes on a student’s assignment–for analyzing a homework assignment early. Through studying this intervention, …

Md Simulations Of Collision Effects For A Strongly Coupled Plasma, Jawon Jo Aug 2024

Md Simulations Of Collision Effects For A Strongly Coupled Plasma, Jawon Jo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Studying strongly coupled plasmas can be effectively accomplished using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We have developed an advanced MD simulation code that can analyze plasmas with various coupling parameters. This code employs a spherically symmetric cut-off Coulomb force verified through convergence tests by modulating the cut-off and minimum force ranges. Additionally, it incorporates a new algorithm for optimizing the initial positions of particles at a given temperature. This method maintains the temperature constant and the velocity distribution unchanged. As a result, we eliminate the unphysical initial rises and oscillations in temperature that a random distribution of positions causes. The code …

From Inbreeding To Admixture: How The Diverse Consequences Of Gene Flow Shape Evolutionary Dynamics And Population Viability, Amy L. Springer Aug 2024

From Inbreeding To Admixture: How The Diverse Consequences Of Gene Flow Shape Evolutionary Dynamics And Population Viability, Amy L. Springer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

When Homo sapiens traveled out of Africa and interbred with the Neanderthals of Europe, human genes spread into the Neanderthal population. Likewise, genes from Neanderthals spread into the human genome—genes humans still carry to this day. The process whereby genetic material from one population is spread to another is known as gene flow. Gene flow—or the absence thereof—can have critical consequences for a population’s health and survival. On one hand, if no gene flow occurs, mating among close relatives can lead to high levels of inbreeding. Inbreeding can have devastating consequences for the health of populations, in some cases even …

Understanding Ion Rejection Mechanism Of Freeze Desalination By Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Mahbuba Jannat Aug 2024

Understanding Ion Rejection Mechanism Of Freeze Desalination By Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Mahbuba Jannat

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This study explores a method called freeze desalination, which uses the natural process of ice formation to remove salt from water at lower than freezing temperature of water, which is 235K (Freezing temperature of this water model is 249K), making it safe for potable water. Unlike traditional methods, freeze desalination can be more efficient and environmentally friendly, but how it rejects salt at the molecular level is not very clear to understand. Using molecular dynamics simulation, this research aims to uncover the details of this process. We focused on understanding how water molecules interact with salt ions during freezing. Our …

Shedding Light On Past Ice-Free Intervals In Northwest Greenland: Luminescence Dating Of The Base Of The Camp Century Ice Core, Hawke Woznick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The goal of this thesis is to provide greater resolution on the age and character of the subglacial sediment recovered from the base of the Camp Century ice core, northwestern Greenland. Geochemical analysis indicated that the upper sub-ice sediments were geochemically different and experienced greater weathering than the basal unit underlying a one-meter silty ice lens. Analysis of feldspars within the very fine sand fraction indicates they are dominated by potassium feldspar. Sediment was dated using luminescence, which provides an age for the last time sediment was exposed to light. Luminescence analysis returned ages around 420 thousand years old, which …

Invasion Potential Of Nonnative Fishes Through A Large Western Dam Into A Prized And Vulnerable Ecosystem, Barrett T. Friesen Aug 2024

Invasion Potential Of Nonnative Fishes Through A Large Western Dam Into A Prized And Vulnerable Ecosystem, Barrett T. Friesen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Native river fish face threats from habitat fragmentation, water overallocation, invasive species establishment, and powerful synergies amongst these factors. In the Colorado River Basin, USA, these threats coalesce at Glen Canyon Dam (GCD), which impounds the Colorado River to create Lake Powell, a reservoir inhabited by nonnative fish species. There is widespread concern low water level in Lake Powell may allow nonnative fish to escape through the dam, adversely affecting native fish species downstream in the Grand Canyon. In this study we characterized the seasonal distribution of nonnative fishes in the vicinity of GCD and identified environmental conditions that may …

Cislunar Optimal Robust Trajectory Design With Corrective Maneuvers, Scott J. Kelly Aug 2024

Cislunar Optimal Robust Trajectory Design With Corrective Maneuvers, Scott J. Kelly

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

One common method for determining how to get from point A to point B is by finding the most fuel-efficient path. This is a common method for spacecraft trajectory designers also. Without any random or unexpected occurrences this path is called the deterministic optimal trajectory. Sometimes unexpected events happen that result in deviating from the most fuel-efficient path; while driving, you may encounter a detour. Naturally, we tend to return to the original fuel-efficient path and continue the journey. Similar deviations happen in space. The rocket delivering a spacecraft to orbit likely will not deliver exactly to the intended starting …

Shaking Off The Rust: Unraveling The Depositional And Diagenetic History Of Enigmatic Ferroan Dolostones In The Cambrian Bright Angel Formation, Tonto Group, Grand Canyon, Joseph J. Clevenger Aug 2024

Shaking Off The Rust: Unraveling The Depositional And Diagenetic History Of Enigmatic Ferroan Dolostones In The Cambrian Bright Angel Formation, Tonto Group, Grand Canyon, Joseph J. Clevenger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Within the siliciclastic-sediment-dominated Bright Angel Formation (BAF) of the iconic Cambrian sedimentary strata (Tonto Group) in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, workers have identified and named prominent reddish-brown cliffs breaking up the generally slope-forming unit near, but separated from, its upper contact with the limestone-dominated Muav Formation, the "Rusty Brown Dolostones" (RBDs). Previous hypotheses suggest that the RBDs are chemically and physically altered tongues of the Muav Formation intercalated with the BAF at increasingly higher stratigraphic positions from west to east within the Canyon. A genetic association between the Muav Formation and the RBDs, as well as between the RBDs …
