Michigan Tech Publications

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory, located on the side of the Sierra Negra volcano in Mexico, has been fully operational since 2015. The HAWC collaboration has recently significantly improved their extensive air shower reconstruction algorithms, which has notably advanced the observatory performance. The energy resolution for primary gamma rays with energies below 1 TeV was improved by including a noise-suppression algorithm. Corrections have also been made to systematic errors in direction fitting related to the detector and shower plane inclinations, O ( 0 .° 1 ) biases in highly inclined showers, and enhancements to the core reconstruction. The …

“Hey Girlie, Want To Sell Your Soul?” How The U.S. Can Counteract Predatory Cult Activities Through The Lens Of Fraudulent Business Schemes, Georgia Bronson

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

This paper investigates the parallels between predatory New Religious Movements (NRMs) and fraudulent business schemes such as pyramid and Ponzi schemes. By examining their recruitment tactics, psychological manipulation, and exploitation of economic vulnerabilities, this paper reveals how these organizations target socially and economically unstable populations for financial gain. The study proposes two strategic interventions: first, using the Social Vulnerability Index to develop proactive government responses, including targeted public service announcements and law enforcement education; and second, creating an IRS database requiring detailed financial reporting from tax-exempt organizations. The goal is to address systemic vulnerabilities through data-driven policy, increased transparency, and …

Luminescent Coupling In Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells: The Advantages Of Perovskite And Luminescent Coupling In Photovoltaics, Briana Dokken Sep 2024

Luminescent Coupling In Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells: The Advantages Of Perovskite And Luminescent Coupling In Photovoltaics, Briana Dokken

Senior Seminars and Capstones

Multijunction or tandem solar cells are made of multiple semiconductor light absorbing layers. Having multiple absorber layers in a solar cell allows it to absorb a larger range of the solar spectrum. When electrons recombine (relax to a lower energy state) in the top layer of a tandem solar cell, they can emit luminescent photons that are absorbed by the bottom layer of the cell. This process is called luminescent coupling, and it can be used to enhance the performance of photovoltaic cells. Another strategy to increase solar cell performance is to use perovskite as the absorber layer material. Currently, …

Sourcing Derivatives: Time To Reverse The Rule?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Sep 2024

Sourcing Derivatives: Time To Reverse The Rule?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In their excellent Tax Notes article on the application of withholding taxes on derivatives, Lorenz F. Haselberger and Michael B. Shulman write that:

A taxpayer entering into a derivative may derive income of a kind that is different from the kind of income that would have been realized had the taxpayer instead acquired the underlying asset, resulting in different U.S. withholding tax treatment.

For example, when a foreign taxpayer enters into a swap referencing an equity security or interest rate, amounts it receives that correspond to dividends or interest generally are characterized as periodic payments on a financial contract rather …

Striatal Beat Frequency Interval Timing Model With Microgravity Stressor, Jason Michael Fitzgerald, Sorinel Oprisan Sep 2024

Striatal Beat Frequency Interval Timing Model With Microgravity Stressor, Jason Michael Fitzgerald, Sorinel Oprisan

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

The Striatal Beat Frequency (SBF) model of interval timing uses frontal cortex (FC) neural oscillations to record the state of the brain at the reinforcement time Tc during fixed interval (FI) procedures in the long-term memory (LMEM). The state of the FC oscillators at any given time is stored in a short-term memory (SMEM) buffer. The SBF model uses the spiny neurons of the basal ganglia (BG) as coincidence detectors to produce beats between the content of the SMEM and LMEM. Across multiple species that can perform interval timing, there are two invariant properties: (a) the timing is precise, and …

Pooling And Winsorizing Machine Learning Forecasts To Predict Stock Returns With High-Dimensional Data, Erik Mekelburg, Jack Strauss Sep 2024

Pooling And Winsorizing Machine Learning Forecasts To Predict Stock Returns With High-Dimensional Data, Erik Mekelburg, Jack Strauss

Finance: Faculty Scholarship

We evaluate US market return predictability using a novel data set of several hundred ag- gregated firm-level characteristics. We apply LASSO, Elastic Net, Random Forest, Neural Net, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Light Gradient Boosting Machine methods and find these models experience large prediction errors that lead to forecast failures. However, winsorizing and pooling machine learning model forecasts provides consistent out-of-sample predictability. To assess robustness, we apply machine learning methods to high-dimensional data for Canada, China, Germany and the UK as well as the Goyal-Welch data. All machine learning models we consider, except for the ensemble pooled methods, fail to significantly …

Examination Of Oncogenic Effects Of Environmental Pollutants, Andrew Ackerman, Matthew Behling, Brock Earley, Janay Vacharasin

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Chemical byproducts produced by surrounding industrial complexes have polluted the local estuaries of Georgetown, South Carolina for several decades1. Previous studies completed by the EPA and SCDNR showed that the estuaries contained carcinogenic pollutants released from the local manufacturing plants1. One of the mentioned pollutants was dioxins which are produced during the paper bleaching process2. Dioxins are highly toxic compounds that have various carcinogenic effects on the organisms that inhabit the area. These previous studies were conducted over thirty years ago. Therefore, a current study to determine if chemical byproducts are contaminating local estuaries …

Methods For Efficient Computation Of Neutron Multiplicity Distributions And Snm Sample Characterization, Jawad Ribhi Moussa Sep 2024

Methods For Efficient Computation Of Neutron Multiplicity Distributions And Snm Sample Characterization, Jawad Ribhi Moussa

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

This dissertation advances neutron multiplicity counting (NMC) by developing a hierarchy of computational methods that combine deterministic and stochastic techniques with modern machine learning for improved special nuclear material (SNM) characterization. A system state-updating Monte Carlo method is introduced in addition to a dynamic point kinetic model based on a backward Master equation (BME) formulation. These models, along with newly developed distribution reconstruction methods, enable more efficient computation of neutron count distributions in a fixed detector time-gate. NMC limitations associated with finite-size and neutron phase effects are also addressed by extending the BME model to account for time-gated neutron count …

Generalized Periodicity And Applications To Logistic Growth, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline Mesquita, Sabrina Streipert Sep 2024

Generalized Periodicity And Applications To Logistic Growth, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline Mesquita, Sabrina Streipert

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Classically, a continuous function f:R→R is periodic if there exists an ω>0 such that f(t+ω)=f(t) for all t∈R. The extension of this precise definition to functions f:Z→R is straightforward. However, in the so-called quantum case, where f:qN0→R (q>1), or more general isolated time scales, a different definition of periodicity is needed. A recently introduced definition of periodicity for such general isolated time scales, including the quantum calculus, not only addressed this gap but also inspired this work. We now return to the continuous case and present the concept of ν-periodicity that connects these different formulations of periodicity for …

The Cubic-Quintic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation With Inverse-Square Potential, Alex H. Ardila, Jason Murphy Sep 2024

The Cubic-Quintic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation With Inverse-Square Potential, Alex H. Ardila, Jason Murphy

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in three space dimensions with a focusing cubic nonlinearity and defocusing quintic nonlinearity and in the presence of an external inverse-square potential. We establish scattering in the region of the mass-energy plane where the virial functional is guaranteed to be positive. Our result parallels the scattering result of [11] in the setting of the standard cubic-quintic NLS.

A Full Description Of All Commutative Associative Polynomial Operations On Probabilities, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong Sep 2024

A Full Description Of All Commutative Associative Polynomial Operations On Probabilities, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When two events are independent, the probability that both events occur is equal to the product p1 * p2 of the probabilities of each of these events. The probability that at least one of these events will occur is equal to p1 + p2 − p1 * p2. In both cases, we have a commutative associative polynomial operation. A natural question is: how can we describe all possible operations of this type? These operations are described in this paper.

Why Kolmolgorov-Arnold Networks (Kan) Work So Well: A Qualitative Explanation, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the usual deep neural network, weights are adjusted during training, but the activation function remains the same. Lately, it was experimentally shown that if, instead of using the same activation function always, we train the activation functions as well, we get a much better results -- i.e., for the networks with the same number of parameters, we get a much better accuracy. Such networks are called Kolmogorov-Arnold networks. In this paper, we provide a general explanation of why these new networks work so well.

How To Check Continuity Based On Approximate Measurement Results, Inese Bula, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2024

How To Check Continuity Based On Approximate Measurement Results, Inese Bula, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, a reasonable conjecture is that, e.g., the dependence of some quantity on the spatial location is continuous, with an appropriate bounds on the difference between the values at nearby points. If we knew the exact values of the corresponding quantity, checking this conjecture would be very straightforward. In reality, however, measurement results are only approximations to the actual values. In this paper, we show how to check continuity based on the approximate measurement results.

Three Applications Of Geometric Reasoning: Why Metastasis Is Mostly Caused By Elongated Cancer Cells? How Body Shape Affects Curiosity? Why Ring Fractures In Ice?, Julio C. Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this paper, we describe three applications of geometric reasoning to important practical problems ranging from micro- to macro-level. Specifically, we use geometric reasoning to explain why metastasis is mostly caused by elongated cancer cell, why curiosity in fish is strongly correlated with body shape, and why ring-shaped fractures appear in Antarctica.

To Which Interdisciplinary Research Collaborations Should We Pay More Attention?, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Interdisciplinary research is very important in modern science. However, such a research is not easy, it often needs support and help. Resources that can be used for such a support are limited, so we need to decide which of many possible collaborations we should support. In this paper, we provide a natural simple model of collaboration effectiveness. Based on this model, we conclude that we should support collaborations for which the vector product of the participants' knowledge vectors attains the largest values.
