Coastal nature-based solutions (NbS) have emerged as powerful tools to enhance sustainable development and ecological restoration goals. As a rapidly growing field spanning across social, political, ecological, economic, and engineering disciplines, it is critical that researchers working in coastal NbS regularly attempt to identify emerging focal areas for scientific inquiry. Following the 27th Biennial meeting of the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation, we provide a transdisciplinary perspective (including biologists, engineers, oceanographers, geoscientists, economists, and facilitators of workforce training programs) of pertinent research questions that, if answered, will advance the effectiveness, sustainability, and widespread adoption of coastal NbS. These suggestions for …

Widespread coral bleaching and mortality events are becoming increasingly frequent due to rising ocean temperatures, though certain coral species and populations have displayed higher tolerance to elevated emperatures than others. As such, it is of high research priority to identify thermally tolerant coral populations for research and conservation and assess the biological mechanisms allowing these populations to survive exposure to higher temperatures. This research utilized the Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System (CBASS), a portable experimental aquaria system with precise temperature manipulation, to assess the thermal thresholds and heat stress response of two coral species from Summerland Key, FL, USA. Seven …

Reef-building corals are being impacted by increasing seawater temperatures, with marine heatwaves leading to mass bleaching events and extensive mortality. However, corals can display variation in thermal tolerance, both within and among species. In this study, we sampled four coral species (Acropora hyacinthus, Montipora grisea, Pocillopora verrucosa, and Porites lobata) from two sites on Tutuila, American Samoa, with contrasting environmental regimes but similar Maximum Monthly Means (MMM). Coral fragments were subjected to short-term acute heat stress experiments using the Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System (CBASS). PAM Fluorometry was used to measure the symbiont’s effective quantum yield (Fv/Fm) following heat stress …

The implementation of coastal nature-based features, created wetlands, and wetland restoration has increased globally over recent years. Many of these projects have been successful in meeting their goals, however, when projects fail, it is often attributed to mortality of transplanted vegetation. Transplant mortality may be due to inappropriate timing, poor site selection, or abiotic stressors associated with transplant shock. Science-backed guidelines have been well established in many coastal regions regarding site specifications and species selection, but nursery practices for reducing transplant shock remain inconsistent. In this study, we tested a combination of four salinity acclimation treatments and two inundation acclimation …

Nature in cities is essential for human well-being. Quantifying and valuing the goods and services provided by nature to city dwellers is missing in tropical contexts. Yet, as cities worldwide face similar challenges, understanding the services provided by tropical urban ecosystems becomes imperative for effective management. Here, we present the first Natural Capital Assessment of a tropical city, unveiling three critical insights. Firstly, we demonstrate the vital reliance of a developed tropical city on nature, particularly for climate change mitigation through regulating services. Secondly, we identify intact natural areas as Singapore’s most valuable assets, stressing the significance of the quality …

Climate change is expected to intensify salinity and temperature fluctuations in estuarine and coastal habitats. However, the impact of salinity variation on ectotherms’ thermal tolerance remains underexplored, limiting our understanding of the interplay between these stressors. This study investigated salinity-dependent changes in life history traits (survival, growth rate, fecundity, and egg size) over a 33-day exposure to a salinity gradient (12, 17, 22, 27, 32, 35, 40, 45, 50) in the marine annelid Ophryotrocha labronica. Individuals that survived the salinity treatments were assessed for their upper and lower thermal tolerance limits. Female individuals, the target of the study, exhibited …

Future-Oriented Coastal Protection: The Utility Of Living Shorelines Under Changing Climatic Conditions, Gabriella R. Dipetto, Donna Marie Bilkovic, Taylor M. Sloey, Erik S. Yando, Erik L. Walters

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

An accumulation of novel nature-based shoreline management techniques have developed over the past two decades out of the continued need to protect waterfront land combined with an awareness of the relationship between healthy coastal ecosystems and human societies. Shoreline protection strategies such as living shorelines incorporate these nature-based approaches to simultaneously enhance ecosystem functioning while providing shoreline stabilization benefits. The continued role of these approaches into the future, however, will be challenged by a rapidly changing coastal environment. While living shorelines have received global attention and integration into climate policy and governance frameworks, the ability of shoreline systems to withstand …

The future of coral reefs remains uncertain as intensifying ocean warming continues to drive coral decline and demise worldwide. Corals occurring in extreme environments such as the Persian/Arabian Gulf (PAG), the world’s warmest sea, represent a promising resource to study the genetic architecture of thermal tolerance. However, their thermal capacities remain unresolved. We applied short-term heat stress assays using the Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System (CBASS) to determine signatures of thermal tolerance from three common species (Porites harrisoni, Platygyra daedalea, and Cyphastrea microphthalma) across three sites (two in the extreme southern PAG and a more benign …

Mangroves and other blue carbon ecosystems are important for climate through the storage and sequestration of carbon. Most research estimates carbon dynamics by subsampling central portions of the ecosystem and are then upscales using habitat maps to patch, landscape, or regional levels. However, heterogeneity is rarely accounted for - particularly at edges. Further, adjacent tidal flat ecosystems have only recently been considered for carbon storage, but may be undervalued if areas where they transition with vegetated systems are not accounted for. To address the lack of information at coastal ecotones, we examined both soil carbon storage and carbon dioxide flux …

Salmonids express several different life histories from migrating to oceans and back or staying in their natal streams as a resident. Migratory individuals are a vital part of the overall success of populations due to the potential for increased genetic diversity and increased fecundity they offer over resident individuals. This research was completed in three basins including Priest River, Pack River, and Lightning Creek which are all connected to the Pend Oreille Basin and are important producers of Westslope Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi). Thirty-nine sites were sampled between the three basins. Results were compared between these tributaries that have …

Multi-Objective Bike Routing Problem: A Survey And Comparative Evaluation, Dominic Peter Macisaac

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Multi-objective routing has been studied for over forty years, yet its application to the bike routing problem is a relatively recent development. The Multi-Objective Bike Routing Problem (MOBRP) seeks to optimize a set of bike routes from a single source to a single destination, given multiple cost criteria. This paper makes two primary contributions. First, it consolidates existing research on the MOBRP, including the criteria chosen and associated cost functions, the search algorithms used, and the testing setups and metrics used for evaluation. Second, it implements the most promising search algorithms and evaluates these approaches through comprehensive cross-testing, a topic …

Charge or spin-qubits can be realized by using gate-defined quantum dots (QDs) in semiconductors in a similar fashion to the processes used in CMOS for conventional field-effect transistors or more recent fin FET technology. However, to realize a larger number of gate-defined qubits, multiples of gates with ultimately high resolution and fidelity are required. Electron beam lithography (EBL) offers flexible and tunable patterning of gate-defined spin-qubit devices for studying important quantum phenomena. While such devices are commonly realized by a positive resist process using metal lift-off, there are several clear limitations related to the resolution and the fidelity of patterning. …

From Common Core To Critical Consciousness: Public Pedagogy And The Struggle Over Democratic Education, Maureen B. Mcgurk

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

This thesis examines the effects of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) on students, teachers and public schools over the past fifteen years. It argues that by denying students and teachers agency, the CCSS has weakened the democratic purposes of public education. Using a lens of critical pedagogy and social movement theory, it traces the history and harm of standardization and pays particular attention to how standardized methods of teaching and learning disproportionately harm students from marginalized communities. The author draws on her lived experience within the public school system to develop a public-pedagogy oriented social movement to build collective …

Achievements And Challenges With Equilibrium And Kinetic Passive Sampling Of Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic Organic Compounds In Surface Waters, Kees Booij, Rachel Mackie, Branislav Vrana, Rainer Lohmann, Sarit L. Kaserzon

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Passive sampling in surface waters is an important method in the monitoring and risk assessment of hydrophobic and hydrophilic organic chemicals. Sampler designs can be optimized for fast equilibrium attainment (equilibrium sampling) or improved time-integrative capability (kinetic sampling). We argue that both equilibrium and kinetic sampling can be applied when aqueous concentrations do not vary with time, whereas kinetic sampling also yields useful results for time-variable concentrations that are often observed with hydrophilic compounds in surface waters. We show that these methods have similar accuracy in principle but that their dominant error sources are different: sampler-water sorption coefficients for equilibrium …

Do Specialized Medical Llms Demand A Radically New Approach Under The Eu's Medical Device Regulation, Hannah Louise Smith, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Articles

We examine the arguments made by Onitiu and colleagues concerning the need to adopt a “backward-walking logic” to manage the risks arising from the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) adapted for a medical purpose. We examine what lessons can be learned from existing multi-use technologies and applied to specialized LLMs, notwithstanding their novelty, and explore the appropriate respective roles of device providers and regulators within the ecosystem of technological oversight.

Theoretical Proof Of And Proposed Experimental Search For The Ground Triplet State Of A Wigner-Regime Two-Electron ‘Artificial Atom’ In A Magnetic Field, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni

Physics Faculty Publications

It is experimentally established that there is no ground triplet state of the natural 𝐻𝑒He atom. There is also no exact analytical solution to the Schrödinger equation corresponding to this state. For a two-dimensional two-electron ‘artificial atom’ or a semiconductor quantum dot in a magnetic field, as described by the Schrödinger–Pauli equation, we provide theoretical proof of the existence of a ground triplet state by deriving an exact analytical correlated wave function solution to the equation. The state exists in the Wigner high-electron-correlation regime. We further explain that the solution satisfies all requisite symmetry and electron coalescence constraints of a …

Extending Revised Lewis Gear Root Bending Stress Model To Addendum Modified Cylindrical Gears, Edward E. Osakue Jan 2025

Extending Revised Lewis Gear Root Bending Stress Model To Addendum Modified Cylindrical Gears, Edward E. Osakue

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new revised Lewis gear bending root stress model for both standard profile and profile-shifted cylindrical gears. The three parameters that are used to extend the root bending stress capacity of standard profile gears to profile-shifted gears are the profile shift radius factor, the profile shift load factor, and the modified Lewis stress factor. These three parameters are functions of the profile shift factor. The new bending capacity model is used to estimate the bending stresses for some standard profile gears with nominal helix angles between 0o to 41.41o and compared with estimates of AGMA model. The …

A Bevel Gear Root Bending Stress Model, Edward E. Osakue, Rasoul Saneifard Jan 2025

A Bevel Gear Root Bending Stress Model, Edward E. Osakue, Rasoul Saneifard

Faculty Publications

A reversed Lewis root bending stress capacity model for bevel gears is presented. The model is developed from first principle based on the Tredgold’s approximation of a bevel gear. The approximation conceptually transforms a bevel gear into a spur gear. The load distribution of the bevel gear facewidth is assumed to be triangular so that the stress at the gear is constant over the facewidth. Six design cases of root bending stress computations from different references are done using the new and AGMA models. The stress estimates from the new and AGMA models were compared. The stress deviations associated with …

The conjugate heat transfer and fluid flow has vast applications in thermal engineering, particularly for cooling in thermal devices, and automobile engines. This study investigates conjugate heat transfer in 2D enclosures, featuring thin solid fins attached to a porous bottom wall. The porous medium is considered isotropic and homogeneous by the Darcy-Forchheimer model, with fluid phases in local thermal equilibrium. The boundary conditions at the porous fluid interface ensure continuity of the velocities, stresses, temperature, and heat flux. The phenomenon is mathematically modelled by obtaining a set of partial differential equations. The finite element method (FEM) is used to perform …

Advancing Root Trait Measurements For A Deeper Understanding Of Soil Biogeochemistry, Brian Rinehart Jan 2025

Advancing Root Trait Measurements For A Deeper Understanding Of Soil Biogeochemistry, Brian Rinehart

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Climate change is disrupting (agro)ecosystems, with the potential for significant losses in crop productivity and ecosystem resilience due to changes in water and biogeochemical cycling. These disruptions can also release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through the degradation of soil organic matter. Plant roots have emerged as a potential tool for mitigating these effects, given their roles in plant function and in driving soil biogeochemistry. While this interest is growing, our ability to implement root trait selection is limited due to constraints on characterizing roots and limited clarity on the effects of traits on plant and ecosystem function. My …
