Purpose-Driven Curriculum For 9th-12th Grades For Adulthood Careers & Life Gratification, Destiny Krystle Chioma Nnadozie

Theses and Dissertations

A purpose-driven or purpose-based curriculum is not the standard required for high schools in the United States. Students in grades 9th-12th are educated based on a curriculum that covers mathematics, English, science, and social studies (De Roux & Riehl, 2022; Xiao et al., 2018). The unique individual purpose of each student, realized while in high school, is not considered a priority, leaving students to enter their adult careers lacking true career fulfillment due to this misalignment (Baroudi et al., 2017; S. Lyons et al., 2015; H. Wu, 2024).  Using a qualitative systematic review research design, this study aimed to explore …

Essays On Gender In Macroeconomics, Lindsey Uniat

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

My dissertation examines interactions between recent macroeconomic trends in the labor market, including technological change and structural transformation, and changes in female labor supply.

In Chapter 1, I investigate the role of factors affecting female labor supply, such as social norms and discrimination, in the decline of routine jobs in the U.S. since the 1970’s. While typically attributed to changes in labor demand, the decline in routine employment has been larger for women than men, reflecting a shift of female employment out of routine clerical jobs and into non-routine professions. This paper presents a quantitative analysis of the impact of …

Challenges In Modern Machine Learning: Generalization And Responsible Use, Grigoris Velegkas Jan 2025

Challenges In Modern Machine Learning: Generalization And Responsible Use, Grigoris Velegkas

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Modern machine learning (ML) systems operate in settings where classical theoretical analysis, which relies on worst-case bounds, often fails to provide meaningful guarantees. Neural networks and large language models are trained with significantly more parameters than training data, yet they generalize well in practice—contrary to theoretical results. Additionally, ML algorithms are increasingly deployed in high-stakes applications, raising concerns about replicability and, more broadly, their responsible use. This thesis makes progress on two fundamental challenges in modern ML: (i) developing generalization guarantees beyond worst-case analysis, and (ii) designing algorithms with provable replicability guarantees.

In the first part of the thesis, we …

On Planar Brownian Motion Singularly Tilted Through A Point Potential, Barkat Mian Jan 2025

On Planar Brownian Motion Singularly Tilted Through A Point Potential, Barkat Mian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We construct a family of time-inhomogeneous two-dimensional diffusion processes, defined over a finite time interval [0, T]. These diffusions have transition density functions that are given by the integral kernels of the semigroup corresponding to the two-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a point potential at the origin. Although, in a few ways, our processes of interest are closely related to two-dimensional Brownian motion, they have a singular drift pointing in the direction of the origin that is strong enough to enable the possibility of visiting there with positive probability. Our main focus is on characterizing a local time process at the …

High-Resolution And Time-Efficient Infiltration Rate Estimating Technique Using Geophysical Emi And Hydrogeological Modeling, Md Abdus Samad Jan 2025

High-Resolution And Time-Efficient Infiltration Rate Estimating Technique Using Geophysical Emi And Hydrogeological Modeling, Md Abdus Samad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Information on infiltration rates is crucial for developing climate-resilient infrastructure, optimizing irrigation in agricultural management, and tackling stormwater-related hazards. However, rapid urbanization and climate change are expected to exacerbate these risks. Therefore, proper assessment and understanding of infiltration capacity is essential for designing effective soil conservation strategies aimed at enhancing infiltration, reducing erosion, and supporting sustainable land and water management. Despite the importance, traditional methods such as single ring and double ring infiltrometer (DRI) test are limited by spatial resolution and time inefficiency, often fail to capture spatial heterogeneity across large areas.

To address these limitations, this research developed a …

Unstable Rivalry: Structure, Domestic Politics, And Taiwan In U.S.-China Relations, Brendan Edward Flynn Jan 2025

Unstable Rivalry: Structure, Domestic Politics, And Taiwan In U.S.-China Relations, Brendan Edward Flynn

Wayne State University Dissertations

International relations (IR) scholarship frequently utilizes structural and domestic political levels of analysis to explain interstate war and conflict. While U.S.-China relations have deteriorated significantly, there is considerable disagreement about what caused this change. In this dissertation I utilize Militarized Interstate Disputes (MIDs) to operationalize instability between the U.S. and China and test competing theories. Increasing levels of MIDs since 2009 broadly confirm structural theories that hold power parity is a primary driver of conflict between great powers. Case studies of the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis (1995 – 1996) and Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis (2022), however, illustrate that domestic political …

God’S Country: Perceptions Of Religious And Place-Based Candidate Identities, Levi G. Allen, James R.G. Kirk

Government: Faculty Publications

It is often assumed that the rural identity is linked to the Republican Party and the urban identity to the Democratic Party, but little scholarship has investigated how voters connect these identities to the parties in an electoral context and how that perception may influence their electoral preferences. Furthermore, recent elections have seen various political elites employ rural and Evangelical Christian identity labels in virtually synonymous ways in their association with the Republican Party. But are these partisan stereotypes really how Americans perceive these candidate identities? Utilizing a novel survey experiment, we find important distinctions between religious and place-based candidate …
