Intertwining Wisdom: The Fusion Of Indigenous Knowledge And Liberal Arts And Sciences Education Discourses At The Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University In The Colombian Cauca, Paula Milena Suárez Sandoval

GHEA21 Publications

This research shows how the Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University (UAIIN), the most important community-based indigenous higher education institution in Colombia, has developed an educational model that harmonizes indigenous traditional knowledge with contemporary Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) discourses of higher education. Through qualitative analysis, the study compares how these two approaches are reflected in discourses around the purpose of education, pedagogical methods, and the university’s curriculum. The findings highlight an educational model that reconciles the inclusion of indigenous epistemologies with the contemporary dynamics of higher education.

Ordering According To Size Of Disks In A Narrow Channel, Dan Liu, Michael Karbach, Gerhard Müller Jan 2025

Ordering According To Size Of Disks In A Narrow Channel, Dan Liu, Michael Karbach, Gerhard Müller

Physics Faculty Publications

A long and narrow channel confines disks of two sizes. The disks are randomly agitated in a widened channel under moderate pressure, then jammed according to a tunable protocol. We present exact results that characterize jammed macrostates (volume, entropy, jamming patterns). The analysis divides jammed disk sequences into overlapping tiles out of which statistically interacting quasiparticles are constructed. The fractions of small and large disks are controlled by a chemical potential adapted to configurational statistics of granular matter. The results show regimes for the energy parameters (determined by the jamming protocol) that either enhance or suppress the mixing of disk …

Immunofluorescence-Based Detection of MYC–EGR1 Pathway Activity in p53-Deficient Human Colorectal Cancer Cells

The Wnt signaling pathway drives proliferation in the intestinal epithelium and maintains those cells in an undifferentiated state. Dysregulation of this pathway results in uncontrolled proliferation of the intestinal epithelium which can lead to colorectal cancer. These effects are driven by the expression of a common Wnt target gene, MYC. Upregulation of MYC expression by the Wnt signaling pathway, either during normal Wnt signaling or dysregulated Wnt signaling, canonically drives intestinal epithelial cells into a proliferative state. Under a specific cellular context, the loss of functional p53, MYC …

Exploring The Myc-Egr1 Pathway In Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Jacob L. Dykstra Iii, Bishoy S. Sami, Dr. Erick Spears

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

The WNT signaling pathway plays a crucial role in the regulation of cell growth and death in the intestinal epithelium and during colorectal carcinogenesis. In the presence of Wnt, MYC is upregulated, which leads to the proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells. Under certain cellular conditions, namely the loss of p53 function common to colorectal tumors, MYC upregulates the expression of the tumor suppressor EGR1, leading to apoptosis. This MYC-EGR1 pathway has been observed in p53-knockout mouse embryonic fibroblasts but has yet to be observed in human cells. These studies aim to assess the activity of the MYC-EGR1 pathway in human …

Localized Kernel Methods For Signal Processing, Sippanon Kitimoon Jan 2025

Localized Kernel Methods For Signal Processing, Sippanon Kitimoon

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents two signal processing methods using specially designed localized kernels for parameter recovery under noisy condition. The first method addresses the estimation of frequencies and amplitudes in multidimensional exponential models. It utilizes localized trigonometric polynomial kernels to detect the multivariate frequencies, followed by a more detailed parameter estimation. We compare our method with MUSIC and ESPRIT, which are classical subspace-based algorithms widely used for estimating the parameters of exponential signals. In the univariate case, the method outperforms MUSIC and ESPRIT under low signal-to-noise ratios. For the multivariate case, we develop a coordinate-wise projection and registration approach that achieves …

Doug Laycock And Creativity In Restitution—The Henrietta Lacks Litigation As A Test Case, Doug Rendleman, Caprice L. Roberts

Scholarly Articles

This Article explores the Henrietta Lacks litigation as a test case for Professor Laycock's writings and theories on the law of unjust enrichment and restitution remedies. A series of modern lawsuits brought by the Lacks Estate allege that defendant companies continue to make unjust profits with knowledge of the unsavory provenance of the Henrietta Lacks immortal cell line. The only count in the complaints is unjust enrichment. The core remedy is restitutionary disgorgement of unjust gains. The authors connect the novel nature of the lawsuits to foundational restitution principles. Professor Laycock's scholarly articles, books, and law reform projects bring deeper …

Reimagining Compliance: Explainable Ai Models For Financial Regulatory Audits, Hrishikesh Desai Jan 2025

Reimagining Compliance: Explainable Ai Models For Financial Regulatory Audits, Hrishikesh Desai

Faculty Publications

This chapter develops an analytical model for Explainable AI (XAI) designed to support major types of banking regulatory compliance audits. Financial institutions increasingly rely on AI for efficiency in compliance tasks, but the opacity of complex models creates challenges in meeting regulatory transparency requirements. The proposed mathematical framework incorporates explainability as a quantifiable constraint in the optimization of AI models across five critical audit categories: CAMELS examinations, BSA/AML compliance, Consumer Compliance, IT Audits, and Internal Audits. By quantifying explainability through information- theoretic measures and Shapley values, the model balances predictive performance with regulatory requirements. The methodology is validated through a …

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca

Library Publications

Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.

Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.

Results: …

Application Of A New Learning Company Layers Model Through Participatory Action Research, Donald L. Jones Jan 2025

Application Of A New Learning Company Layers Model Through Participatory Action Research, Donald L. Jones

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Objective: This dissertation utilized Participatory Action Research to explore the impact of implementing a new learning organization model in the field, The Learning Company Layers Model. The concept of a learning organization was made popular by Senge (1990/2006) and further advanced by Gilley and Maycunich (2000a), who expanded the idea that employee development involved more than training. Studies indicating that these models have not been widely adopted by organizational leadership inspired the development of a new model using an adult learning-supported, layered approach as a potential introductory phase of such a transition.

Method: The literature review examined the …
