The First Five Years: A Study Of Novice Teacher Retention In High-Poverty Urban Public Schools, Nathan Ziegler Jan 2025

The First Five Years: A Study Of Novice Teacher Retention In High-Poverty Urban Public Schools, Nathan Ziegler

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using data from the 2020–2021 National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS), this quantitative study investigated the retention and attrition of novice teachers in high-poverty urban public schools in the United States. With large numbers of teachers leaving or planning to leave the profession and fewer qualified teachers entering the workforce, the issue of teacher retention continues to grow. Teacher turnover impacts schools financially, strains leaders who must continue to train new teachers and establish their schools’ culture, burdens other teachers who often must fill in for vacancies and support new teachers, and most importantly, negatively impacts students in a variety …

The 3-hinge gyrus (3HG) is a newly defined folding pattern, which is the conjunction of gyri coming from three directions in cortical folding. Many studies demonstrated that 3HGs can be reliable nodes when constructing brain networks or connectome since they simultaneously possess commonality and individuality across different individual brains and populations. However, 3HGs are identified and validated within individual spaces, making it difficult to directly serve as the brain network nodes due to the absence of cross-subject correspondence. The 3HG correspondences represent the intrinsic regulation of brain organizational architecture, traditional image-based registration methods tend to fail because individual anatomical properties …

Brain-Adapter: Enhancing Neurological Disorder Analysis With Adapter-Tuning Multimodal Large Language Models, Jing Zhang, Xiaowei Yu, Yanjun Lyu, Lu Zhang, Tong Chen, Chao Cao, Yan Zhuang, Minheng Chen, Tianming Liu, Dajiang Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Understanding brain disorders is crucial for accurate clinical diagnosis and treatment. Recent advances in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) offer a promising approach to interpreting medical images with the support of text descriptions. However, previous research has primarily focused on 2D medical images, leaving richer spatial information of 3D images under-explored, and single-modality-based methods are limited by overlooking the critical clinical information contained in other modalities. To address this issue, this paper proposes Brain-Adapter, a novel approach that incorporates an extra bottleneck layer to learn new knowledge and instill it into the original pre-trained knowledge. The major idea is to …

Recently, ChatGPT and GPT-4 have emerged and gained immense global attention due to their unparalleled performance in language processing. Despite demonstrating impressive capability in various open-domain tasks, their adequacy in highly specific fields like radiology remains untested. Radiology presents unique linguistic phenomena distinct from open-domain data due to its specificity and complexity. Assessing the performance of large language models (LLMs) in such specific domains is crucial not only for a thorough evaluation of their overall performance but also for providing valuable insights into future model design directions: whether model design should be generic or domain specific. To this end, in …

On The Sharpness Of A Korn’S Inequality For Piecewise H1 Space And Its Applications, Qingguo Hong, Young Ju Lee, Jinchao Xu Jan 2025

On The Sharpness Of A Korn’S Inequality For Piecewise H1 Space And Its Applications, Qingguo Hong, Young Ju Lee, Jinchao Xu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we investigate the sharpness of a Korn's inequality for piecewise H1 space and its applications. We first revisit a Korn's inequality for the piecewise H1 space based on general polygonal or polyhedral decompositions of the domain. We express the Korn's inequality with minimal jump terms. Then we prove that such minimal jump conditions are sharp for achieving the Korn's inequality. The sharpness of the Korn's inequality and explicitly given minimal conditions can be used to test whether any given finite element spaces satisfy Korn's inequality, immediately as well as to build or modify nonconforming finite elements for …

Long-Time Asymptotics For The Kadomtsev–Petviashvili I Equation With Small Initial Data, Samir Donmazov Jan 2025

Long-Time Asymptotics For The Kadomtsev–Petviashvili I Equation With Small Initial Data, Samir Donmazov

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

We study the initial value problem for the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili I (KP I) equation (ut + 6uux + uxxx)x = 3uyy with small initial data belonging to a subspace of the energy space for the KP I equation. We establish the long-time asymptotics for solutions of the KP I equation using the inverse scattering transform formalism developed by Zhou. Within this framework, the inverse problem for the KP I equation is formulated as a nonlocal Riemann--Hilbert problem (RHP) in two spatial dimensions. As part of the asymptotic analysis, we determine the long-time behavior of the …

Reproductive Costs In Female, Island-Dwelling Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Adamanteus), Emily R. Gray

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus; EDBs) are a declining species endemic to the Southeastern Coastal Plain. Reproduction is costly for females, which are ovoviviparous, slow to mature, reproduce infrequently, and are often emaciated after parturition. Yet, we have a limited understanding of the trade-offs associated with their reproductive biology. Thus, I had three objectives: 1) assess reproduction-associated water stress and determine how female EDBs respond to altered water budgets in situ (Chapter 1), 2) evaluate the interactive effects of body condition and rainfall on female hydration, with a special focus on musculature as a condition index (Chapter 1), …

A Monte Carlo Study Of The Efficacy Of The Mantel-Haenszel Method At Detecting Item Bias, Macy Daulton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Mantel-Haenszel (MH) method is a statistical method used for differential item functioning analysis. Previous differential item functioning (DIF) research of the MH method focused on Type I error rates and statistical power. Not yet studied in the literature is whether excessive numbers of biased items may cause the MH method to fail to identify biased items. The proposed study employed a Monte Carlo design to determine the extent of bias in the match items necessary for the MH method to fail to identify a biased item. Results showed that the threshold was greater than was hypothesized, requiring nearly all …

Dashar: An Implementation Of Augmented Reality Technology For Automotive Applications, Trevor D. Brown

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Since the advent of the modern automobile, manufacturers have provided means of tracking various critical data points associated with automobile operation, with the most prominent and standardized method being the instrument cluster. These data points include, but are not limited to, automobile speed, engine speed, fuel level, oil temperature, radiator (water) temperature, and battery charge. While this data is updated in real-time as the automobile is running, traditional instrument clusters cannot be modified or adjusted to the automobile driver’s needs, unless extensive after-market modifications are made. These modifications can be expensive, and require great understanding of the automobile’s assembly.

An Algorithm And Computation To Verify Legendre's Conjecture Up 7 · 1013, Jonathan Sorenson, Jonathan Webster Jan 2025

An Algorithm And Computation To Verify Legendre's Conjecture Up 7 · 1013, Jonathan Sorenson, Jonathan Webster

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We state a general purpose algorithm for quickly finding primes in evenly divided sub-intervals. Legendre’s conjecture claims that for every positive integer n, there exists a prime between n2 and (n + 1)2. Oppermann’s conjecture subsumes Legendre’s conjecture by claiming there are primes between n2 and n(n + 1) and also between n(n + 1) and (n + 1)2. Using Cramér’s conjecture as the basis for a heuristic run-time analysis, we show that our algorithm can verify Oppermann’s conjecture, and hence also Legendre’s conjecture, for all n ≤ N in time O(N log N log …

Voting With Their (Left And Right) Feet: Do Partisans Value Neighborhood Environmental Amenities Differently?, Corey Lang, Jarron Vanceylon Jan 2025

Voting With Their (Left And Right) Feet: Do Partisans Value Neighborhood Environmental Amenities Differently?, Corey Lang, Jarron Vanceylon

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Working Papers

There exists a consistent partisan gap in preferences for public spending on the environment, with approval being 20 to 40 percentage points higher for Democrats than Republicans. In this paper, we investigate whether there is a similar partisan gap present in residential preferences for environmental amenities. We link housing data, land use, and household characteristics, including voter registration, for three distinct housing markets, and we develop a residential sorting model to estimate marginal willingness-to-pay (MWTP) for residential proximity to conserved land, allowing for preference heterogeneity by partisanship as well as other household characteristics. For all households combined, we estimate average …

Millennium School: An Experiment In Transpersonal Education For Early Adolescents, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article describes the design, curriculum, culture, and values of an experiment in transpersonal education for young adolescents, the Millennium middle school in San Francisco, CA. The overarching design of the school was to help children exiting the latency period of child development, who exhibit the rudiments of Wade’s Authentic consciousness or Maslow’s Self-actualization motive stage, consolidate that level rather than losing it, as the vast majority do, because of social pressures that make earlier stages of development more adaptable in most contemporary societies. Early adolescence is a time when peer pressure, individuation from the family, and puberty are strong …
