Faecal Excretion Of Thorium By Norm Workers, Gregory S. Hewson, Martin Ralph, Marcus Cattani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Exposure to thorium-bearing dust in industries handling and processing monazite and other minerals can pose radiological risks to workers. This study aimed to reassess historical faecal bioassay data collected over 10 d from two monazite plant workers using updated biokinetic and dosimetric models. Another objective was to evaluate the feasibility of faecal thorium bioassay for contemporary operations involving naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). The retrospective analysis found that the bioassay-derived thorium intakes were significantly higher than those estimated via personal air sampling. The effective dose estimates for the two workers were similar and ranged from 0.95 to 2.40 mSv over …

Accreditation And Engineering Ethics Education, Shannon M. Chance
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Over time, individuals and entities within the engineering education community have developed a multifaceted strategy to synchronize global educational practices and performance metrics. This comprehensive approach involves conducting and disseminating educational research (evident throughout this handbook) and implementing research-informed pedagogies in the classroom (exemplified by the teaching methods section). It also includes establishing and aligning accreditation standards internationally – to guide the content and delivery of engineering education, including ethics. Although this section focuses on the accreditation of engineering ethics education (EEE), understanding the overall accreditation system is essential for grasping the ethics component.
Elastic Scheduling For Graceful Degradation Of Mixed-Criticality Systems, Zhuoran Sun, Marion Sudvarg, Christopher Gill
Elastic Scheduling For Graceful Degradation Of Mixed-Criticality Systems, Zhuoran Sun, Marion Sudvarg, Christopher Gill
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Many mixed-criticality system models drop all jobs of low-criticality tasks when a criticality mode switch occurs, ensuring that high-criticality tasks still can meet their deadlines in the new mode. However, this means that even important low-criticality tasks are discarded, which may not be acceptable in some systems in practice. This paper addresses that distinction between criticality and importance through a new Inelastic Graceful Earliest Deadline First with Virtual Deadlines (IG-EDF-VD) scheme that upon a criticality mode switch only discards the least important low-criticality tasks necessary to ensure feasibility. Moreover, we consider elastic scheduling within our mixed-criticality model (EG-EDF-VD), using compression …

The risk of national food supply disruptions is linked to both domestic production and food imports. But assessments of climate change risks for food systems typically focus on the impacts on domestic production, ignoring climate impacts in supplying regions. Here, we use global crop modeling data in combination with current trade flows to evaluate potential climate change impacts on national food supply, comparing impacts on domestic production alone (domestic production impacts) to impacts considering how climate change impacts production in all source regions (consumption impact). Under 2°C additional global mean warming over present day, our analysis highlights that climate impacts …

Modification Of Maxwell Model For Conductivity Prediction Of Carbon Nanotubes-Filled Polymer Composites With Tunneling Effect, Jue Zhu, Longyuan Li, Ningtao Zhu
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have garnered great attention in recent years due to their outstanding electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The incorporation of small amounts of CNTs in polymers can substantially improve the sensitivity of the polymer’s electrical conductivity. This paper presents a modified Maxwell model to evaluate the electrical conductivity of CNTs-filled polymer composites by introducing a transition zone to account for the tunneling effect. In this modified Maxwell model, the CNTs-filled polymer composite is modeled as a three-phase composite, consisting of a matrix (polymer), inclusions (CNTs), and a transition zone (tunneling zone). The effective electrical conductivity (EEC) of the …

Pediatric low-grade gliomas (pLGGs) exhibit heterogeneous prognoses and variable responses to treatment, leading to tumor progression and adverse outcomes in cases where complete resection is unachievable. Early prediction of treatment responsiveness and suitability for immunotherapy has the potential to improve clinical management and outcomes. Here, we present a radiogenomic analysis of pLGGs, integrating MRI and RNA sequencing data. We identify three immunologically distinct clusters, with one group characterized by increased immune activity and poorer prognosis, indicating potential benefit from immunotherapies. We develop a radiomic signature that predicts these immune profiles with over 80% accuracy. Furthermore, our clinicoradiomic model predicts progression-free …

An Agent-Based Model Of Microglia And Neuron Interaction: Implications In Neurodegenerative Disease, Cheyenne Ty, Amanda Case, Emmanuel Mezzulo, Abigail Penland, Kamila Larripa
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
Whether immune cells protect or harm the brain is an open question depending on context, and their role is implicated in multiple diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and other neurological disorders. Microglia, a specific type of immune cell in the central nervous system, play a key role in homeostasis, and genes associated with an elevated risk of Alzheimer's disease correspond with deficiencies in their behavior. We created an agent-based model that incorporates inflammatory signaling, chemotaxis, and phagocytosis of damaged neurons and allows the exploration of crucial pathways in the maintenance of brain health. We specifically investigated pathways related to …
