Balancing Anarchy And Efficiency: Partial Team Formations And Learning In Potential Games, Muhammed Sayin Jan 2025

Balancing Anarchy And Efficiency: Partial Team Formations And Learning In Potential Games, Muhammed Sayin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Non-cooperative multi-agent learning, focusing on individual rationality (anarchy), often falls short in achieving system-wide efficiency in potential games, a class of games with applications in decentralized control and optimization. On the other hand, cooperative approaches prioritize system efficiency but often via global coordination, which could be impractical, e.g., for large-scale and less controlled environments. To address this dilemma, we propose a novel framework that introduces partial team formations, allowing team members with shared objectives to coordinate their actions while maintaining team-wise rationality for improved system-wide efficiency without the burden of global coordination. We model such interactions as a multi-team game …

Wild Magic Farms: Increasing Student Engagement And Decreasing Academic Regression In Middle School Extended School Year Through Use Of A Role-Playing Game, Maryanne Cullinan

Educational Studies Dissertations

The Extended School Year (ESY) is a federal program that falls under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Law (2004) as part of Special Education in public schools in the United States. It is intended to help reduce regression in student progress towards Individualized Education Program goals. However, in New Hampshire, ESY struggles with a lack of clear goals, student buy-in and quality engagement. This study examined how a researcher designed role-playing game (RPG) could impact both summer academic regression and student engagement in a middle school ESY. Utilizing i-Ready testing (n=13) data and attendance data (n=9), this study compared …

Photolysis And Sublimation Chemistry Of Ammonium Cyanide With Relevance To Cometary Environments, O. H. Wilkins, K. M. Yocum, Vincent J. Esposito, E. Harel, S. N. Milam, P. A. Gerakines

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Bulk nitrogen is depleted in solar system objects, including the terrestrial planets, chondritic meteorites, and comets. Recently, it was suggested that cometary nitrogen may be locked up in ammonium salts—ionic solids comprising ammonia (NH3) and an acid such as hydrogen cyanide (HCN)—based on Rosetta/ROSINA data from comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimanko. Among the proposed salts to have been found in 67P were ammonium cyanide (NH4CN) and ammonium cyanate (NH4OCN), which were inferred from identifying HCN, cyanamide (NH2CN), and isocyanic acid (HNCO) in the mass spectrometry data collected in the coma of 67P. However, the relationship …

Local Dynamic Analysis Of The Covid-19 Mathematical Model Based On Discrete-Time Predator-Prey Population Model, Fi̇gen Kangalgi̇l, Ni̇lüfer Topsakal, Özge Kuzucu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this article, the local dynamics of a discrete-time Covid-19 pandemic model based on the Lotka Volterra model with topological classifications, bifurcation analysis and chaos control are investigated. It is shown that under some parametric conditions, the discrete-time Covid-19 pandemic model has two equilibrium points. With linear stability theory, local dynamics are investigated with topological classifications about the equilibrium points of the discrete-time Covid-19 epidemic model. In addition, the existence of a Neimark-Sacker bifurcation at the internal equilibrium point is proved and this bifurcation is analysed using explicit criteria. Furthermore, the chaos in the discrete Covid-19 pandemic model is also …

Generalization Of Dual Numbers And Dual Euclidean 3-Space, Şükran Duygu Soylu, Harun Bariş Çolakoğlu, Mustafa Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, we consider the generalized dual numbers and determine their algebraic and geometric properties. Then we generalize the well-known D3 module and introduce the generalized dual Euclidean 3-space with its scalar product and norm. After determining the conditions for being a unit generalized dual Euclidean vector, we derive the generalized Euclidean Study map, which states that there is a bijective correspondence between directed lines of the space and the elements of the unit generalized dual Euclidean sphere. Finally, we define the dual Euclidean angle between two generalized dual Euclidean vectors.

A Deep Learning-Based Method For The Intelligent Identification Of The Quantity Of Coals Flushed Out During Borehole Hydraulic Flushing, Li Xiaojun, Zhao Mingyang, Li Miao

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective Given the inaccurate and low-efficiency manual statistics of the quantity of coals flushed out during borehole hydraulic flushing, this study proposed an intelligent identification method that combines YOLOv8n, ResNet34, and PP-OCRv4 algorithms. Methods First, the first-level detection was completed using the YOLOv8n algorithm, which, combined with the ResNet34 and PP-OCRv4 algorithms via parallel cascade, was then employed to conduct second-level processing. Through the above processing and in combination with the method for classification status discrimination based on tracking frame numbers, the framework of an algorithm for automatically calculating the quantity of coals flushed out was established. Subsequently, the deformable …

Improving Rupture Status Prediction For Intracranial Aneurysms Using Wall Shear Stress Informatics, Jingfeng Jiang, Mostafa Rezaeitaleshmahalleh, Jinshan Tang, Joseph Gemmette, Aditya Pandey

Michigan Tech Publications

BACKGROUND: Wall shear stress (WSS) plays a crucial role in the natural history of intracranial aneurysms (IA). However, spatial variations among WSS have rarely been utilized to correlate with IAs' natural history. This study aims to establish the feasibility of using spatial patterns of WSS data to predict IAs' rupture status (i.e., ruptured versus unruptured). METHODS: "Patient-specific" computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed for 112 IAs; each IA's rupture status was known from medical records. Recall that CFD-simulated hemodynamics data (wall shear stress and its derivatives) are located on unstructured meshes. Hence, we mapped WSS data from an unstructured …

Investigating Student Noticing Of Quantitative Reasoning In Introductory Biology Labs, Jeremy L. Hsu, Sara Gartland, Joelle Prate, Charles Hohensee

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Quantitative reasoning (QR) is a key skill for undergraduate biology education. Despite this, many students struggle with QR. Here, we use the theoretical framework of student noticing to investigate why some students struggle with QR in introductory biology labs. Under this framework, what students notice when given new information and data influences how they process this information and connect it with other events to form new conceptions. Students must mentally isolate given features, create mental records of those features, and identify features or objects that they connect to existing knowledge. Identifying these features or objects is thus critical since they …

Estimates Of The Numerical Radius Utilizing Various Function Properties, Vuk Stojiljkovic, Mehmet Gürdal

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Numerous inequalities of the vector and numerical radius types have been found. We achieved several extensions of the well-known numerical radius type inequalities by using the function [[EQUATION]] described in the publication by Stojiljkovi\'{c} and Dragomir in [30] and convexity characteristics with standard operator theory approaches. In particular, the following integral type numerical radius inequality has been obtained, that is [[EQUATION]]

Spherical And Sessile Droplet Dynamics By Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, John B. Bell, Andrew Nonaka, Alejandro L. Garcia Jan 2025

Spherical And Sessile Droplet Dynamics By Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, John B. Bell, Andrew Nonaka, Alejandro L. Garcia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We simulate the mesoscopic dynamics of droplets formed by phase-separated fluids at nanometer scales where thermal fluctuations are significant. Both spherical droplets fully immersed in a second fluid and sessile droplets which are also in contact with a solid surface are studied. Our model combines a Cahn-Hilliard formulation with incompressible fluctuating hydrodynamics; for sessile droplets, the fluid-solid contact angle is specified as a boundary condition. Deterministic simulations with an applied body force are used to measure the droplets' mobility from which a diffusion coefficient is obtained using the Einstein relation. Stochastic simulations are independently used to obtain a diffusion coefficient …

Wind And Topography Underlie Correlation Between Seasonal Snowpack, Mountain Glaciers, And Late-Summer Streamflow, Elijah N. Boardman, Andrew G. Fountain, Joseph W. Boardman, Thomas H. Painter, Evan W. Burgess, Laura Wilson, Adrian A. Harpold

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a warming climate, net mass loss from perennial snow and ice (PSI) contributes a temporary source of unsustainable streamflow. However, the role of topography and wind in mediating the streamflow patterns of deglaciating watersheds is unknown. We conduct lidar surveys of seasonal snow and PSI elevation change for five adjacent watersheds in the Wind River Range, Wyoming (WRR). Between 2019 and 2023, net mass loss from PSI is equivalent to ~10-36% of August-September streamflow. Across 338 manually classified PSI features >0.01 km2, glaciers contribute 68% of the total mass loss, perennial snowfields contribute 8%, rock glaciers contribute 1%, buried …

Age-Related Balance Control Changes In Constrained-Speed Gait During A Concurrent Cognitive Task, Raymond Chong, Victoria Moore, Hope Brown Sampson, Heather Spears, Manh-Cuong Do

Asian Journal of Physical Therapy

Background: During walking, the center of mass (CoM) oscillates up and down in the sagittal plane. In the late-stance phase, as the CoM descends, its vertical velocity decreases before foot contact, indicating active neural balance control, which we refer to as CoM braking. Young adults tend to increase braking while maintaining step length and speed when performing a cognitive task, such as subtracting numbers. In contrast, older adults maintain consistent braking by reducing step length and speed. This study examined the effects of walking at constant self-selected, slower, or faster speeds on CoM braking and cognitive performance. Methods: Healthy young …

Face-Magic Labelings Of Polygonal Graphs, Wai Chee Shiu, Richard M. Low, Andy K. Liu Jan 2025

Face-Magic Labelings Of Polygonal Graphs, Wai Chee Shiu, Richard M. Low, Andy K. Liu

Theory & Applications of Graphs

For a plane graph $G = (V, E)$ embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$, let $\mathcal{F}(G)$ denote the set of faces of $G$. Then, $G$ is called a \textit{$C_n$-face-magic graph} if there exists a bijection $f: V(G) \to \{1, 2, \dots, |V(G)|\}$ such that for any $F \in \mathcal{F}(G)$ with $F \cong C_n$, the sum of all the vertex labels along $C_n$ is a constant $c$. In this paper, we investigate face-magic labelings of polygonal graphs.

A Characterization Of Chordal Graph Without Sun And Co-Rising Sun As Convex Geometry, Silvia B. Tondato

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In this paper we introduce the notion of $t_3$ \textit{convexity}, a natural restriction of triangle convexity. A \textit{triangle path} is a path allowing just short chords. A triangle path $P$ between two non-adjacent vertices in a graph $G$ is called $t_3$ \textit{path} if the first vertex of $P$ is among vertices from $P$ adjacent only to the second vertex of $P$, and the last vertex of $P$ is among vertices from $P$ adjacent only to the second-last vertex of $P$. A set $S \subseteq V(G)$ is $t_3$ \textit{convex} if for any two non-adjacent vertices $x, y \in S$ any vertex …

Failed Zero Forcing Numbers Of Trees And Circulant Graphs, Luis Gomez, Karla Rubi, Jorden Terrazas, Rigoberto Florez, Darren A. Narayan

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Given a graph $G$, the zero forcing number of $G$, $Z(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of any set $S$ of vertices on which repeated applications of the forcing rule (described below) results in all vertices being in $S$. The forcing rule is as follows: if a vertex $v$ is in $S$, and exactly one neighbor $u$ of $v$ is not in $S$, then $u$ is added to $S$ in the next iteration. Zero forcing numbers have attracted great interest over the past 15 years and have been well studied. The zero forcing number is used to study the maximum nullity/minimum …
