Examining Leadership Practices To Promote A Positive Culture Of Research Integrity In Higher Education Institutions, Seán Lacey, Jennifer J. Wilkinson

Publications

What is new?

While Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have, in recent years, placed greater emphasis on promoting good research practices, it is yet relatively unknown what leadership approaches are best suited to cultivating a positive culture of research integrity (RI) in HEIs. This small-scale exploratory descriptive study therefore sought to uncover initial findings from within the European context on practices research leaders found to be most effective in leading positive change in this space.

What was the approach?

The design was constructed using semi-structured interviews with five senior research leaders. Countries that were members of the European Network of Research …

Can Chatgpt Implement Finite Element Models For Geotechnical Engineering Applications?, Hyoung Suk Suh Feb 2025

Can Chatgpt Implement Finite Element Models For Geotechnical Engineering Applications?, Hyoung Suk Suh

Faculty Scholarship

This study assesses the capability of ChatGPT to generate finite element code for geotechnical engineering applications from a set of prompts. We tested three different initial boundary value problems using a hydro-mechanically coupled formulation for unsaturated soils, including the dissipation of excess pore water pressure through fluid mass diffusion in one-dimensional space, time-dependent differential settlement of a strip footing, and gravity-driven seepage. For each case, initial prompting involved providing ChatGPT with necessary information for finite element implementation, such as balance and constitutive equations, problem geometry, initial and boundary conditions, material properties, and spatiotemporal discretization and solution strategies. Any errors and …

Design And Modelling Of Advanced Power Converter Control For Harmonics Suppression And Energy Management, Jayant Sharma S Feb 2025

Design And Modelling Of Advanced Power Converter Control For Harmonics Suppression And Energy Management, Jayant Sharma S

Theses and Dissertations

The quality of electrical power plays a crucial role in both industrial and domestic sectors. This issue becomes even more critical in systems that incorporate power converter-based loads, which are commonly integrated at the grid connection point. Motor drives and grid-integrated electric vehicle (EV) charging stations belong to a category of non-linear loads that inherently introduce substantial harmonic distortion into the current drawn from AC mains. This harmonic distortion adversely affects power quality, potentially leading to overheating and malfunctions in sensitive equipment across the grid. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology for EV charging stations has surged …

Anogat-Sparse-Tl: A Hybrid Framework Combining Sparsification And Graph Attention For Anomaly Detection In Attributed Networks Using The Optimized Loss Function Incorporating The Twersky Loss For Improved Robustness., Nadhem Ebrahim, Wasim Khan

University Research

In recent years, the identification of abnormalities in attributed networks has become essential for applications including social media analysis, cybersecurity, and financial fraud detection. Unsupervised graph anomaly detection techniques seek to recognize infrequent and anomalous patterns in graph-structured data without the necessity of labelled instances. Conventional methods employing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) frequently encounter difficulties, especially due to the transmission of noisy edges and the intrinsic intricacy of node interrelations. To overcome these restrictions, we introduce ANOGAT-Sparse-TL, an innovative hybrid framework that integrates graph sparsification and Graph Attention Networks (GAT) with autoencoder-based reconstruction for anomaly detection in attributed networks. The …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: The objective of this study was to develop and validate a radiomics-based machine learning (ML) model to differentiate between renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) and clear cell renal carcinoma (ccRCC).

Methods: This retrospective Institutional Review Board -approved study analyzed CT images and clinical data from patients with RMC (n = 87) and ccRCC (n = 93). Patients without contrast-enhanced CT scans obtained before nephrectomy were excluded. A standard volumetric software package (MIM 7.1.4, MIM Software Inc.) was used for contouring, after which 949 radiomics features were extracted with PyRadiomics 3.1.0. Radiomics analysis was then performed with RadAR for differential radiomics …

Polytechnic Journal

The synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using bay leaf extract (Syzygium polyanthum) and their testing against bacteria aims to evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness on two types of bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The synthesis method used is environmentally friendly, with bay leaves serving as a reducing agent. The synthesis process was carried out by mixing silver nitrate (AgNO₃) solution with bay leaf extract at concentrations of 2 mM and 3 mM in a ratio of 1:30 and 1:40 between AgNO₃ and bay leaf extract. The use of bay leaf extract to …

Perspectives Of Childcare Directors, Teachers, And Parents Regarding The Risks And Challenges Of Nature Preschools, Mary Lavere Traub

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nature preschools are becoming more widespread but most nature preschools in the United States are not licensed. The problem addressed in this study was that unlicensed nature preschools may present risks and challenges for children because they are unlicensed. Guided by the work of Ernst and colleagues about the safety risks inherent in nature preschools, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of directors and teachers who work in nature preschools and parents who enroll their children in nature preschools regarding the risks and challenges for children that these preschools may present. Interviews were conducted …

The Integrated Monitoring Of Karst Systems (Miks) Model, Applied In Karst Studies In Bulgaria, Petar Stefanov, Dilyana Stefanova, Peter Nojarov Feb 2025

The Integrated Monitoring Of Karst Systems (Miks) Model, Applied In Karst Studies In Bulgaria, Petar Stefanov, Dilyana Stefanova, Peter Nojarov

International Journal of Speleology

Karst is a widespread natural phenomenon that is highly sensitive and very vulnerable to both natural and various anthropogenic impacts. This is due to the complex structure of karst territories, which comprise both surface forms and complex systems of underground cavities. Therefore, the study of karst requires a geosystem approach and integrated monitoring, which gives a real idea of the state of karst geosystems and the impacts of global changes on karstogenesis. The article presents a model of this approach, which is applied in karst studies in Bulgaria. The methodological basis is the original ProKARSTerra paradigm, based on the geosystem …

Green Investment In The Eu And The Us: Markup Insights, Anastasia Bruni

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper examines the effect of green investments on market power. I measure the market power as markup following the method provided in De Loecker and Warzynski (2012). For green investments, I consider specifically the investments of firms in energy efficient technologies, both as the binary variable and as the continuous variable. This allows the examination of how the presence of such investments as well as their intensity affect markups. I use firm, age, year, sector and country fixed effects with a representative sample of indicatively 12,000 firms from the European Investment Bank Investment Survey (EIBIS) in the panel from …
