Hierarchical Search Method For Gravitational Waves From Stellar-Mass Binary Black Holes In Noisy Space-Based Detector Data, Yao Fu, Yan Wang, Soumya D. Mohanty

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Future space-based laser interferometric detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), will be able to detect gravitational waves (GWs) generated during the inspiral phase of stellar-mass binary black holes (SmBBHs). These detections contain a wealth of important information concerning astrophysical formation channels and fundamental physics constraints. However, the detection and characterization of GWs from SmBBHs poses a formidable data analysis challenge, arising from the large number of wave cycles that make the search extremely sensitive to mismatches in signal and template parameters in a likelihood-based approach. This makes the search for the maximum of the likelihood function over …

Restore The Shore: A Guide To Lakeshore Revegetation In The Great Basin, Jes V. Braun, Rae Robinson, Annie L. Henry, Karin M. Kettenring

All Current Publications

Lakeshore vegetation supports many valuable aspects of lake ecosystems: foraging areas for birds, rearing grounds for fish, nutrient cycling, carbon storage, and aesthetic, cultural, and spiritual values. Yet, the vegetation of many lakeshores has been lost or heavily impacted by humans. What can be done to restore lakeshore vegetation to ensure that lakes remain healthy for future generations? In this guide, we summarize best practices for lakeshore revegetation (i.e., the process of actively reintroducing vegetation, usually native species, to a restoration site through seeding and planting) in the Great Basin.

A Review Of Optical Flow Velocimetry In Fluid Mechanics, Gauresh Raj Jassal, Bryan E. Schmidt Feb 2025

A Review Of Optical Flow Velocimetry In Fluid Mechanics, Gauresh Raj Jassal, Bryan E. Schmidt

Faculty Scholarship

Optical flow methods have been developed over the past two decades for application to particle image velocimetry (PIV) images with the goal of acquiring higher resolution measurements of the velocity field than conventional cross-correlation (CC)-based techniques. Numerous optical flow velocimetry (OFV) algorithms have been devised to solve the ill-posed optical flow problem, with various physics-inspired strategies to tailor them to fluid flows. While OFV can be applied to continuous scalar fields, it has demonstrated the most success on images of tracer particles, i.e. traditional planar PIV images. Compared to state-of-the-art CC algorithms, OFV methods have demonstrated an order of magnitude …

A Machine Learning Model To Predict Wildfire Burn Severity For Pre-Fire Risk Assessments, Utah, Usa, Kipling B. Klimas, Larissa L. Yocom, Brendan P. Murphy, Scott R. David, Patrick Belmont, James A. Lutz, R. Justin Derose, Sara A. Wall

Wildland Resources Student Research

Background

High-severity burned areas can have lasting impacts on vegetation regeneration, carbon dynamics, hydrology, and erosion. While landscape models can predict erosion from burned areas using the differenced normalized burn ratio (dNBR), post-fire erosion modeling has predominantly focused on areas that have recently burned. Here, we developed and validated a predictive burn severity model that produces continuous dNBR predictions for recently unburned forest land in Utah.

Results

Vegetation productivity, elevation, and canopy fuels were the most important predictor variables in the model, highlighting the strong control of fuels and vegetation on burn severity in Utah. Final model out-of-bag R2 …

Identification Of Key Nodes And Analysis Of Damage Resistance Of Power Grids Based On Improved K‑Shell And Power Flow Entropy, Jingjing Tian, Kang Xing, Yongxiang Ma, Qunmin Yan

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

In order to improve the accuracy and speed of key node identification and damage resistance analysis of power grids, the topological structure and electrical characteristics are considered comprehensively. The topological information entropy in the improved K‑shell algorithm (IKS) is replaced by power flow entropy, and the value obtained by weighted summing of the K-shell (Ks) value and power flow entropy is defined as a new index for evaluating node importance, namely the comprehensive value of node importance. The comprehensive value of node importance is ranked, and the key node identification model with IKS and power flow entropy is obtained. By …

Coordinated And Optimized Scheduling Of Virtual Power Plants With Wind Power‑Waste Incineration Cogeneration Considering Uncertainty Of Source And Load Sides, Chenyu Wang, Zhong Tang, Minjie Wei, Xiangyang Liu, Haoyang Cui Feb 2025

Coordinated And Optimized Scheduling Of Virtual Power Plants With Wind Power‑Waste Incineration Cogeneration Considering Uncertainty Of Source And Load Sides, Chenyu Wang, Zhong Tang, Minjie Wei, Xiangyang Liu, Haoyang Cui

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

In response to the uncertainty of wind power and load fluctuations, as well as the insufficient system peak shaving capacity of cogeneration units during winter heating periods, a virtual power plant consisting of wind farms, power-to-gas (P2G) conversion plants, and waste incineration power plants within a certain area is formed. Firstly, to address the low energy utilization efficiency of waste incineration power plants, it is considered to adopt their cogeneration mode to participate in system peak shaving, improve energy utilization efficiency, and establish a mathematical model of waste incineration power plants under the cogeneration mode. Secondly, wind farms, P2G, and …

Event‑Triggered Sliding Mode Control Of Direct‑Current Microgrid System Under Network Attack, Yonghui Liu, Yanjie Lu Feb 2025

Event‑Triggered Sliding Mode Control Of Direct‑Current Microgrid System Under Network Attack, Yonghui Liu, Yanjie Lu

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

This paper studies the direct-current bus voltage control of direct-current microgrid systems under false data injection attacks based on event-triggered fixed-time sliding mode control. Firstly, the mathematical model of the direct-current microgrid system under false data injection attacks is established. Secondly, to save network resources, event-triggered mechanisms are introduced in the sensor-to-observer channel and observer-to-controller channel. Thirdly, since the system current is difficult to be accurately measured due to the constant power load disturbance and false data injection attack, a state observer is designed. A fixed-time sliding mode controller based on the observer is designed, and the upper bound of …

Influence Characteristics Of Insulation Layer Temperature On Partial Discharge Of Xlpe, Yan Li, Guancheng Zhen, Haoyuan Song, Xiaokun Liu, Yuwei Liang, Junjie Qiao, Xinyue Liu, Maotao Wang, Zhigang Zhai

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables are the first choice for urban grid line construction. Insulation defects can lead to partial discharge, which affects the insulation performance of the cables and even leads to insulation breakdown and line tripping. At the same time, the cables undergo constant hot and cold cycles during operation, and the insulation layer temperature affects the partial discharge characteristics of XLPE. In order to study this effect, a pin-to-plane electrode experimental platform is set up to measure partial discharge data of XLPE at different temperatures, and the results show that partial discharge mainly occurs at −10°~100° and 150°~265° …

Multimodal Search On A Line, Jared Coleman, Dmitry Ivanov, Evangelos Kranakis, Danny Krizanc, Oscar Morales Ponce

Computer Science Faculty Works

Inspired by the diverse set of technologies used in underground object detection and imaging, we introduce a novel multimodal linear search problem whereby a single searcher starts at the origin and must find a target that can only be detected when the searcher moves through its location using the correct of p possible search modes. The target’s location, its distance d from the origin, and the correct search mode are all initially unknown to the searcher. We prove tight upper and lower bounds on the competitive ratio for this problem. Specifically, we show that when p is odd, the optimal …

Robust Pricing For Cloud Computing, Dirk Bergemann, Rahul Deb Feb 2025

Robust Pricing For Cloud Computing, Dirk Bergemann, Rahul Deb

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study the robust sequential screening problem of a monopolist seller of multiple cloud computing services facing a buyer who has private information about his demand distribution for these services. At the time of contracting, the buyer knows the distribution of his demand of various services and the seller simply knows the mean of the buyer’s total demand. We show that a simple “committed spend mechanism” is robustly optimal: it provides the seller with the highest profit guarantee against all demand distributions that have the known total mean demand. This mechanism requires the buyer to commit to a minimum total …

A Comparison Study Of Senior And Junior Deck Officers’ Interpretations Of The International Regulations For The Prevention Of Collisions At Sea, Ian Heffernan, Tom O'Mahony

Articles

The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) provide a comprehensive set of instructions for watchkeeping officers to follow and prevent collisions at sea. This study compares how six newly qualified deck officers and six Master Mariners, who were all trained at the same college, applied the IRPCS. Individual, semi-structured interviews were used to uncover how the 12 participants applied and interpreted the rules for three authentic scenarios. Phenomenography was used to capture the qualitatively different means by which participants interpreted the IRPCS. For basic collision avoidance situations, the results indicated little difference between the cohorts' ability …

Molecular subtypes, such as defined by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), delineate a cancer's underlying biology, bringing hope to inform a patient's prognosis and treatment plan. However, most approaches used in the discovery of subtypes are not suitable for assigning subtype labels to new cancer specimens from other studies or clinical trials. Here, we address this barrier by applying five different machine learning approaches to multi-omic data from 8,791 TCGA tumor samples comprising 106 subtypes from 26 different cancer cohorts to build models based upon small numbers of features that can classify new samples into previously defined TCGA molecular subtypes-a …

As Text-to-Image (T2I) models become more advanced, they face a fundamental challenge—balancing conflicting alignment goals such as faithfulness vs. artistic freedom, realism vs. stylization, and verifiability vs. creativity. Existing alignment methods often optimize for one objective at the cost of another, leading to inconsistencies in AI-generated images.
