Classification Of Asia Minor Marbles Based On Crystal Size For Archaeometric Assignment, Ramazan Hacimustafaoğlu, Hakan Elçi̇
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
This study was carried out to determine the range of crystal sizes of Asia Minor marbles and to classify the marbles accordingto crystal size. Asia Minor marbles have been used as building stones since ancient times. The literature already includes studies on theircrystal sizes; however, different studies performed on marbles of the same locality have reported different crystal size classes, which hascaused complexity. To eliminate this complexity, this study used multidirectional petrographic analyses on the eight known Asia Minormarbles. Thin sections were photographed under a polarizing microscope, and the crystal sizes of the samples were measured usingcomputerized image analysis. An …

This study develops a surrogate-based method to assess the uncertainty within a convective permitting integrated modeling system of the Great Lakes region, arising from interacting physics parameterizations across the lake, atmosphere, and land surface. Perturbed physics ensembles of the model during the 2018 summer are used to train a neural network surrogate model to predict lake surface temperature (LST) and near-surface air temperature (T2m). Average physics uncertainties are determined to be 1.5°C for LST and T2m over land, and 1.9°C for T2m over lake, but these have significant spatiotemporal variations. We find that atmospheric physics parameterizations alone are the dominant …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease with increasing fatalities around the world. The diagnosis of the diseaseis a major challenge to its control and management due to the lack of adequate diagnostic tools, contributingsignificantly to the prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) modelshave recently been developed to detect drug-resistant tuberculosis by analyzing chest radiograph images fromthe TB portal, but the classification results are low. This is because CNNs struggle to capture complex globaland overlapping features in medical imaging, such as chest radiographs of drug-resistant tuberculosis. Incontrast, transformers excel in these areas by utilizing self-attention mechanisms that detect inherent subtle …

Generative Adversarial Network For Image Reconstruction From Human Brain Activity., Tim Tanner, Vassilis Cutsuridis
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Decoding of brain activity with machine learning has enabled the reconstruction of thoughts, memories and dreams. In this study, we designed a methodology for reconstructing visual stimuli (digits) from human brain activity recorded during passive visual viewing. Using the MindBigData EEG dataset, we preprocessed the signals and cleaned them from noise, muscular artifacts and eye blinks. Using the Common Average Reference (CAR) method and past studies’ results we reduced the available electrodes from 14 to 4 keeping only those containing discriminative features associated with the visual stimulus. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was then trained to encode the signals and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In this chapter we illustrate some of the ways the education sector can play a key role, not just in educating and activating students as advocates for and agents of sustainability but also in motivating and mobilising communities towards a sustainability agenda. Initially in this chapter it was important to look back and identify how important bees have been through the ages, noting that humans identified very early on that bees could enhance their lives. We then outline some of the contributions a focus on bees can make to sustainability education. One important contribution includes fostering a balanced perspective on …

Access To Arynes From Arenes Via Net Dehydrogenation: Scope, Synthetic Applications And Mechanistic Analysis, Riley A. Roberts, Bryan E. Metze, Nicole Javaly, Theresa M. Mccormick, David R. Stuart
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Arynes undergo a wide range of chemical transformations making them versatile reactive intermediates for organic synthesis. Access to arynes has long been dominated by pre-functionalised reagents, e.g., the venerable o-trimethylsilylaryl triflates. However, a move toward developing methods to access arynes that are both mild and efficient has prompted research into aryl “onium” aryne precursors. Here, we leverage aryl “onium” species as in situ or isolated intermediates in a net dehydrogenation of simple arenes as a novel and efficient way to access arynes. We describe a unified strategy in which two different tactics are employed to access diversely substituted …

All Current Publications
In Utah, there is widespread consensus that global warming is happening, and the strength of this consensus has been steadily rising since 2010. Over the last 14 years, some public opinion metrics have risen dramatically while others have been largely stable. The degree of climate impacts in Utah will depend on residents’ perceptions of climate change and support for implementing policies to help the state adapt to warmer temperatures, more extreme weather events, and other associated changes. In this fact sheet, we integrate multiple data sources to summarize the status and trends of Utahns’ opinions on climate change.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL) technologies have revolutionized disease detection, particularly in Medical Imaging (MI). While these technologies demonstrate outstanding performance in image classification, their integration into clinical practice remains gradual. A significant challenge lies in the opacity of Deep Neural Network (DNN) models, which provide predictions without explaining their structure. This lack of transparency poses severe issues in the healthcare industry, as trust in automated technologies is critical for doctors, patients, and other stakeholders. Concerns about liability in autonomous car accidents are comparable to those associated with deep learning applications in medical imaging. Errors such as false …

Reenvisioning Identities That Precede Us: “Body Acknowledgement” As Social Justice Practice Within A Communication Ethics Course Redesign, Wendy Kz Anderson, Ollivia Webster, Nicole Yang, Cass Bryant, Taylor Herr
Feminist Pedagogy
We infuse this conversation of “body neutrality” through social justice responsiveness (compassion, equity, and accountability of body/presence privilege) by specifically attending to intersections of race, gender, and body mindset built into our identities. In reimagining the term “body-neutrality” through identity engagement, we introduce the term “body acknowledgment” as an active interpretative state. As a co-authored pedagogical “co-conspiring” for racial justice (Houdek and Ore, 2021, p. 92), we (instructor, teaching assistants, and previous students) offered a course redesign centering social justice strategies to address the following question: How can dialogue about intersectional communication work toward redesigning learning with difference and develop …

Conversational Agents have the potential to support healthcare through coaching exercise routines, but are still lacking in demonstrating authentic social behaviours to support engagement. To this end, we present a series of experiments that we conducted in order to investigate how automated health care coaches can be more effective when their interaction style is tailored to demonstrate qualities associated with a good bedside manner, namely active listening and reassurance. To test this, we first developed a dataset of 135 dialogue excerpts from three distinct sources, i.e., original, handcrafted and LLMs, the latter two of which were tuned to demonstrate specific …

Erosion can remain active and changing in landscapes long after tectonic drivers have ceased, potentially due to local‐geologic controls, climate changes, or geodynamics. We present new fluvial incision‐ rate histories and terrain analyses of the Colorado River system through the central Colorado Plateau to understand what has caused the variable erosion across this post‐orogenic landscape. Results from new cosmogenic and luminescence dating of fluvial terrace and upland gravel deposits in Glen and Meander Canyons establish incision‐rate histories that are marked by an Early‐Middle Pleistocene erosion hiatus, followed by ∼200 m of rapid incision over the last ∼350 kyr. Projection of …
