The Impact Of Sex And Heat Exposure Schedule On Heat Acclimation, Alejandro M. Rosales, Brent C. Ruby
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Females are underrepresented in thermoregulatory research and thus there is a need to examine how sex-related differences impact heat acclimation. Moreover, current global heatwave incidences warrant investigation into optimizing strategies for human tolerance to heat. PURPOSE: Determine how sex and temporally partitioning identical heat exposure time impacts heat acclimation. METHODS: Over a week, 30 females and 30 males were heat acclimated daily (38°C, 60% RH) on a treadmill (1.6 m·s-1, 5% grade) in one of two 90-minute exposure groups. Sustained groups completed 90-minute sessions continuously and periodic groups completed three separate 30-minute sessions 3 hours apart. Heat exposure …

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
PURPOSE: To evaluate the early stages of adaptation in response to repeated load carriage on mitochondrial protein dynamics.
METHODS: Over 15 days 32 subjects (12 male, 20 female; age 28±6 years; VO2 peak 47.7±8.2 mLkg-1min-1) consumed a loading dose of deuterated water (2H2O), and completed a 5-day load carriage hiking protocol. 2H2O enriched the amino acid pool for observation. Muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis were taken on days 10 and 16, assessing protein fractional synthesis rate (FSR) pre- and post-hiking. During the hiking period, participants completed two laps on an out-and-back …
Acl Reconstruction Graft Type Influence On Outcomes Of Female Soccer Athletes: A Systematic Review, Josie Rae Windauer, Valerie Moody
Acl Reconstruction Graft Type Influence On Outcomes Of Female Soccer Athletes: A Systematic Review, Josie Rae Windauer, Valerie Moody
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Context: Roughly 29 million women play soccer worldwide, and that number has significantly increased over the past 13 years, especially in the United States. Studies specific to female soccer players and ACL injuries are more prevalent than ever. Female soccer players are roughly 3 times more likely to sustain an ACL injury compared to male soccer players. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is the current solution for most injured patients, ideally resulting in a streamlined recovery and return to sport. Graft type superiority continues to be studied among the female soccer population, but it still remains unclear at this …

Grade Two Hamstring Strain In A College Football Player: A Case Report, Audrey M. Missildine
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
This case study explores the rehabilitation of a 20-year-old collegiate linebacker with a grade 2 Semitendinosus hamstring strain sustained during a sprinting activity. Following initial clinical assessment and diagnostic ultrasound, an aggressive, structured rehabilitation protocol was implemented, incorporating modalities such as blood flow restriction (BFR) and aquatic therapy. Traditional approaches to hamstring injuries were adapted with these additional interventions to accelerate recovery, enabling a return to play in nine days. The study highlights the potential use of BFR in early rehabilitation to achieve muscle activation with reduced load, suggesting its utility in shortening recovery time compared to standard hamstring injury …

Research Symposium
Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. While localized CRC has a 90% five-year survival rate, this drops sharply to 14% upon metastasis. Metastasis occurs in approximately 40–50% of CRC cases and requires cancer cells to acquire anoikis resistance—a critical adaptation allowing survival after detachment from the extracellular matrix, enabling migration and colonization of secondary sites. Understanding the molecular mechanisms driving anoikis resistance, particularly those linked to altered glucose metabolism, is essential for developing targeted therapies for metastatic CRC.
Cancer cells frequently exhibit the Warburg Effect, a metabolic adaptation favoring glycolysis over …
Impacts Of The Coastal Aquaculture Authority (Amendment) Act And Adaptive Capacity In The Social-Ecological System Of Chilika Lagoon, India, Adyasha Nayak
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
The growing demand for seafood in the global North has led to transition of capture fisheries to aquaculture to meet the demand. While this growth has been considered a success for livelihood development, its negative impacts on small-scale and traditional fisheries offset the benefits.
This is evident in the case of Chilika lagoon on the east coast of India. Chilika lagoon is a natural habitat for Indian prawn (Penaeus indicus) and thus attracted commercialization during the aquaculture boom. Starting in the 1980s, encroachment of aquaculture and proliferation of commercial fishing has led to loss of traditional fishing areas …

Assessing The Micro- And Macroscopic Changes Of Taphonomically Altered Bone, Shelby Feirstein
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Forensic identifications may be hampered when perpetrators find unique ways of obscuring their victims’ identities, such as fire and household corrosive substances. Thermal alteration, sodium hydroxide, and hydrochloric acid are known to change both the structural integrity and composition of skeletal elements; but the patterns of these processes, nor how each may affect the potential for obtaining identifying DNA data, are well understood.
Burned bone concomitantly follows a defined color spectrum and eventually reaches calcination, consisting only of its original inorganic mineral, hydroxyapatite, which is naturally white in color and brittle.
In contrast, analyses of chemical exposure focus on total …
Medication-Assisted Treatment For Opioid Use Disorder In Montana: Barriers And Best Practices, Lindsey Hundemer, Jacqueline Kline
Medication-Assisted Treatment For Opioid Use Disorder In Montana: Barriers And Best Practices, Lindsey Hundemer, Jacqueline Kline
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based approach for opioid use disorder (OUD) using medications like buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone to treat symptoms of OUD and withdrawal. Despite reducing opioid-related deaths by 50% and improving employment, criminal activity, and birth outcomes, its acceptance in Montana's substance use disorder (SUD) housing varies. Experts stress MAT as essential medical care, yet stigma-driven policies still restrict access, forcing some to choose between medication and treatment.
This study explores the landscape of MAT acceptance in Montana SUD treatment facilities, highlighting the barriers that prevent its widespread acceptance, differences regarding treatment duration, approved medications, and administration …

Modern physics is my only class where half the students are consistently late. It’s not a forgivable one or two minutes late, but five to fifteen. I say this as a culprit myself; I slept in late on the third day of class and didn’t go. It’s ironic, considering we spend a good portion of lecture re-defining time.

The ethylene-forming enzyme (EFE) from the fungus Penicillium digitatum strain Pd1 was heterologously produced in Escherichia coli and its properties were compared to the extensively characterized bacterial enzyme from Pseudomonas savastanoi strain PK2. Both enzymes catalyze four reactions: the conversion of 2-oxoglutarate (2OG) to ethylene and CO2, oxidative decarboxylation of 2OG coupled to L-arginine (L-Arg) hydroxylation, uncoupled oxidative decarboxylation of 2OG, and the production of 3-hydroxypropionate (3-HP) from 2OG. The strain Pd1 enzyme exhibited a greater ratio of ethylene production over L-Arg hydroxylation than the PK2 strain EFE. The uncoupled decarboxylation of 2OG and …

At the end of the Cretaceous, the massive Deccan trap (DT) volcanic eruptions are regarded as the primary driver of global climate deterioration. Accurate age models are key to unravel the sequence of events related to DT volcanism onset and effects on the global climate system. We establish a direct geochemical link between DT volcanism as recorded in marine osmium isotopic data and global climate change documented in benthic foraminifera carbon and oxygen isotope records. Based on our state-of-the-art astronomically calibrated age model, two major shifts in marine 187Os/188Os at 66.49 and 66.28 million years ago are …

Fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) has emerged as an innovative advancement in retinal imaging, with the potential to provide in vivo non-invasive insights into the mitochondrial metabolism of the retina. Traditional retinal imaging, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) intensity imaging, focus solely on structural changes to the retina. In contrast, FLIO provides data that may reflect retinal fluorophore activity, some of which may indicate mitochondrial metabolism. This review builds upon the existing literature to describe the principles of FLIO and established uses in retinal diseases while introducing the potential for FLIO in neurodegenerative conditions.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents the findings of a study investigating the knowledge, ability, and willingness of faculty at a large university to accommodate students with disabilities (SWD). It reveals that while many instructors demonstrate a solid understanding of disability legislation, variations in knowledge and confidence exist based on demographic factors, particularly years of experience. Accommodations like extended time and distraction-free testing environments are more likely to be received positively by instructors and granted easily, while there needs to be more inclination to offer resource-intensive options like note-takers. The study also recommends future research and practical strategies for higher education institutions to …

Crystals exhibiting glass-like and low lattice thermal conductivity ( ) are not only scientifically intriguing but also practically valuable in various applications, including thermal barrier coatings, thermoelectric energy conversion, and thermal management. However, such unusual are typically observed only in compounds containing heavy elements, with large unit cells, or at high temperatures. In this study, chemical bonding principles are utilized to weaken the Ag–Ag bonds and enhance lattice anharmonicity. The incorporation of a chalcogen anion as a bridge ligand is proposed to facilitate phonon rattling in Ag6-octahedron-based compounds. Guided by this design strategy, five Ag6 octahedron-based compounds, AAg3X2 (A = …

The Intricacies Of Pairwise Modular Multiplicative Inverse In Lucas Numbers, Charles Liu
The Intricacies Of Pairwise Modular Multiplicative Inverse In Lucas Numbers, Charles Liu
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Let (p,q) be a pair of relatively prime integers greater than 1. The pairwise modular multiplicative inverse (PMMI) of (p,q) is defined as the unique pair of positive integers (p′, q′) such that p p′ ≡ 1 (mod q), p′ < q, qq′ ≡ 1 (mod p), q′ < p. In this paper, we determine all pairs of Lucas numbers such that their PMMIs are pairs of Lucas numbers.

Discounting Effect Size When Borrowing External Data In Clinical Studies, Zhuanzhuan Ma, Chul Ahn, Bin Wang, Xuefeng Li
Research Symposium
Background: When borrowing information from external data to augment a current trial, many available methods discount the sample size but retain the effect size from previous studies. Discounting the sample size is just one way to discount the prior information. It may not be appropriate if the underlying assumption of unbiased treatment effect does not hold, for example, when the treatment effect in the historical study is likely higher than the one expected in the current trial.
Methods: To tackle this potential issue, we study some methods to shrink the effect size from previous studies assuming that the prior effect …

Background: With a rapid development of data collection technology, high dimensional data, whose model dimension k may be growing or much larger than the sample size n, is becoming increasingly prevalent in different fields of study, such as ecology, genetics, among others. This data deluge is introducing new challenges to traditional statistical procedures and theories and is thus generating a renewed interest in the problems of variable selection and classification in high dimensional regression models. In large k, small n settings, variable selection is usually the first step for dimension reduction to uncover significant covariates, which contribute to …

Effects Of Fertilization And Liming On The Improvement Of Native Pastures, Maria E.V Lourenco, R.J. M. De Carvalho, Maria De L.A.P Da Silva
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Native pastures in Portugal have relatively low productivity. The yield and botanical composition of such grasslands, where some legumes species are present, can be improved by fertilization with phosphorus application and/or also liming (Carter, 1983). The presence of legumes in pasture can also be improved by molybdenum application (Lattan et al., 1984). Significant increases of phosphorus concentration in plants (Garden et al., 1978) and on soil available phosphorus (Gregan et al., 1980) due to phosphorus application have also been reported.
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the potential of such treatments on the improvement of native pastures.
