The Importance Of Changing The High School Math Curriculum To Encourage More Students To Pursue A Degree In The Mathematics Field, Devin Cavicchi

Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics

The mathematics field is a much larger field than many may think with mathematical analysis being involved in many jobs now, yet the need for more people to pursue mathematical careers and join the field is increasing daily. The focus of this thesis is to not only understand why some students are not inclined to pursue a degree in the mathematics field, but also to find methods to entice them to join the field. The literature researched demonstrated that experiences both in and out of the classroom have an impact on perception of the field, with the actual curriculum having …

Assessing The Long-Term Impact Of Initial Market Performance On Investors’ Risk-Taking Behavior, Drew Mahoney Apr 2025

Assessing The Long-Term Impact Of Initial Market Performance On Investors’ Risk-Taking Behavior, Drew Mahoney

Honors Projects in Finance

Since World War II, financial markets have been traditionally analyzed through quantitative models, yet these approaches often fail to account for the psychological and behavioral tendencies of investors. This study examines how investors’ initial experiences with market conditions shape their long-term risk-taking behavior. Findings suggest that individual market experiences, personal background, demographics, and other factors all influence how investors perceive risk. For instance, those who enter the market during periods of volatility may develop a more risk-averse mindset, while investors who experience strong bull markets early on may become overconfident in their future decisions. These insights have significant implications for …

Food Insecurity In Latin America: Climate Change, Industrial Agriculture, And The Case For Regenerative Solutions, Leila Hernandez-Webster

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

This study critically analyzes the nexus between climate change and food insecurity in Latin America, with a particular focus on Costa Rica’s agricultural sector. It interrogates how industrial agricultural practices, deforestation, and trade liberalization have contributed to environmental degradation and heightened socio-economic vulnerabilities, especially among smallholder farmers. Through the lens of political ecology, this research situates these dynamics within the broader context of neoliberal and neo-extractivist development paradigms, which have systematically eroded food sovereignty. This study also evaluates agro-ecological responses, particularly agroforestry, as viable strategies for promoting ecological resilience and socio-economic equity. In doing so, it underscores the imperative of …

Tackling Crime: A Data-Driven Comparison Of Nfl Players With The General Population, Ryan Piersza

Honors Projects in Data Science

This research investigates the frequency of arrests among NFL players compared to the general population and analyze the types of crimes committed. A main theme from the literature is that previous groups of NFL players were found to be arrested at a rate lower than the general population. However, there has been no analysis on how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the crime rates and types. Data obtained from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, The U.S Census Bureau, an NFL arrest database, and player statistics from Pro Football Reference is used for the analysis. The data is analyzed with a rate …

A Comparative Study Of Future Time Perception And Motivation Between General Education Development (Ged) Students And Traditional Four-Year High School Students, Jared D. Brown

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Students, especially those in general education development (GED) programs, are at a higher disadvantage when it comes to postsecondary success and readiness than traditional high school students. Despite being a small percentage of the population, GED students have the same motivation and optimism as other students and should be given the tools and skills necessary to be successful. Two surveys, the Adolescent Time Inventory (ATI; C. D. Mello et al., 2013) and the Global Motivation Scale-28 (GMS-28; Guay et al., 2003a) were used in this study to compare student motivation and time perception between traditional diploma seekers and GED seekers …

An Exploration Of Changes In Sixth Grade Students’ Conceptual Understanding Of Ratios And Proportions With A Number Talk Intervention, Kelsey Pearce-Snow Apr 2025

An Exploration Of Changes In Sixth Grade Students’ Conceptual Understanding Of Ratios And Proportions With A Number Talk Intervention, Kelsey Pearce-Snow

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this study is to examine the changes that occurred in secondary students’ conceptual understanding of ratios and proportions after participating in number talks in their sixth-grade mathematics classroom. Proportional reasoning is a critical mathematical concept (e.g.., Beckmann & Izsák, 2015; Izzatin et al., 2021), yet many students struggle to understand the multiplicative relationships that are found within quantities (Lamon, 2007; Lobato et al., 2010). Number talks are an instructional routine that supports students in their development of underlying mathematical relationships through discourse with their peers (e.g., Gertenschlager & Strayer, 2019; Parker & Humphreys, 2018; Sun et al., …

As a classical Christian educator and leader and a former professional scientist, this author has fielded questions and concerns from parents who have wondered if classical Christian education (CCE) will provide strong instruction in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Because parents have expressed concerns about science and math education, and with the growing renewal of classical Christian education, the question addressed in this expository research project is ‘How do the CCE and STEM models of education …

Examining The Effect Of Climate Change Denialism In American Christianity On International Climate Policy, Hope Mcbride Apr 2025

Examining The Effect Of Climate Change Denialism In American Christianity On International Climate Policy, Hope Mcbride

Selected Honors Theses

While 53% of Americans say anthropogenic climate change is happening, only 32% of American evangelical Protestants share that belief (Alper). Key reasons for this gap include the values and political affiliations held by religious Americans. Historically, there have been dissenting opinions on the role of Christianity in global warming, but ultimately data have demonstrated that the opinions of American Christians can influence major global political decisions, such as President Trump’s executive order pulling the United States out of the keystone Paris Agreement.

We Are The Cemetery Of Talents: Amazigh Reality In The Anti Atlas, Morgan Lee Apr 2025

We Are The Cemetery Of Talents: Amazigh Reality In The Anti Atlas, Morgan Lee

Morocco: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Cultural Transformation

This paper seeks to explore a dynamic in which the Amazigh people of the Anti-Atlas Mountains are forced to decide between stability and success at the expense of their cultural identity. The Imazighen are deeply prideful of their culture and history. But in Morocco, being Amazigh often comes with burdens that disproportionately encumber this culture when compared to general Moroccan society. I will discuss literature on linguistic dynamics with the Tamazight language, literature regarding Amazigh art, and Pan-Africanist literature in order to gain a well-rounded insight into the Amazigh situation. I will then synthesize this information, along with some of …

From Hope To Frustration: The Impacts Of The Withdrawal Of Usaid On Education And Development In Morocco, Kathryn Koss Apr 2025

From Hope To Frustration: The Impacts Of The Withdrawal Of Usaid On Education And Development In Morocco, Kathryn Koss

Morocco: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Cultural Transformation

Following a series of executive orders administered by the Trump administration in January 2025, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID abruptly withdrew from Morocco, leaving an impact on education and development. Using qualitative methods, including six semi-structured interviews with USAID personnel, partners, and local NGOs, the study captures the personal, financial, and operational effects of this sudden cessation. The paper highlights how USAID's localized, inclusive approach had catalyzed significant educational initiatives and collaborative development models, many of which were disrupted or completely dismantled. Key findings reveal that the termination of USAID activities not only jeopardized active programming—such as …

Changes In The Western Flank Of The North Atlantic Subtropical High Since 1140 Ce: Extremes, Drivers, And Hydroclimatic Patterns, Joshua C. Bregy, Justin T. Maxwell, Scott M. Robeson, Grant L. Harley, Valerie Trouet Apr 2025

Changes In The Western Flank Of The North Atlantic Subtropical High Since 1140 Ce: Extremes, Drivers, And Hydroclimatic Patterns, Joshua C. Bregy, Justin T. Maxwell, Scott M. Robeson, Grant L. Harley, Valerie Trouet

Publications

Summer circulation and moisture patterns in the Southeast United States are controlled by the position of the North Atlantic subtropical high. In a warming climate, the subtropical high is projected to strengthen and expand west, but there remains uncertainty regarding its variability and linkages to natural drivers. Here, we use a tree-ring network across the Southeast United States to reconstruct the relative intensity of the pressure gradient across the subtropical high’s western flank over the past 870 years. Variations in the flank’s position and the pressure gradient have been a major driver of the hydroclimate—including creating a Southeast-Caribbean moisture dipole—since …

Motivation Generation: An Ai's Strength And Student Engagement In The Alternative-Setting Science Classroom, Matthew Scotkovsky

Graduate Research - College of Education

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that continues to become increasingly more prevalent, for better or worse, in the classroom. One such way that it has seen use in the classroom is in the generation of lesson plans by teachers who use AI-driven large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. To see if these LLMs are, or could be, a reliable way to craft lessons as the technology continues to improve, the purpose of this study is to determine if a correlation exists between the strength of these different LLMs (measured in “parameters”) and the levels …

Using Physics Simulations To Find Targeting Strategies In Competitive Tenpin Bowling, S. S. M. Ji, S. Yang, W. Dominguez, C. G. Hooper, Cacey Stevens Bester

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

A new approach to finding the ideal location for a bowler to target on a bowling lane is demonstrated. To model bowling ball behavior, a system of six coupled differential equations is derived using Euler’s equations for a rotating rigid body. The numerical solution to the equations of motion shows the path of the ball on the lane, demonstrates the phases of ball motion, and is ultimately used to output a plot that displays the optimal initial conditions for the shot trajectory that leads to a strike for a typical competitive bowler. When the bowler is modeled to be imperfect …
