An Exploration Of Simple Methods For The Purification And Separation Of Natural Curcuminoids, Eion S. Hinkle Apr 2025

An Exploration Of Simple Methods For The Purification And Separation Of Natural Curcuminoids, Eion S. Hinkle

Research & Creative Achievement Day

The separation of curcumin from other naturally occurring curcuminoids, such as demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin, presents significant challenges due to their similar chemical structures. Conventional methods like column chromatography are energetically and environmentally costly, requiring large amounts of solvents and extended processing times. Alternatively, preparatory scale high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) offers high precision but necessitates expensive equipment, making it less accessible for routine laboratory use. This research explores simpler and more sustainable approaches to purify curcumin, aiming to reduce both the environmental impact and the financial burden associated with traditional separation techniques.

Diverse Dust Sources And Warming Trigger Cyanobacteria Abundance In Freshwater Ecosystems In The Western United States, Juan Manuel González-Olalla, Janice Brahney Apr 2025

Diverse Dust Sources And Warming Trigger Cyanobacteria Abundance In Freshwater Ecosystems In The Western United States, Juan Manuel González-Olalla, Janice Brahney

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The rise in global temperature and the increase in atmospheric transport and deposition of dust linked to greater aridity, land abandonment, and wildfires, are placing significant stress on freshwater microbial communities. Temperature increases and the nutrients contained in the dust may independently and together alter the metabolism and structure of these communities. However, dust chemistry is widely variable, and pre-existing lake conditions will likely influence the response of the algal and microbial communities to added nutrients and temperature stress. To fill this gap of knowledge, we tested the metabolic and structural response of phytoplankton in two aquatic ecosystems in the …

Assessing The Impact Of Internal Flow Dynamics On Detection Region Concentrations Of Low-Cost Optical Particle Counters, Livingstone Quarshie

Theses and Dissertations

Particulate matter (PM) poses significant risks to human health and the environment, making accurate measurement essential for exposure assessment and regulatory decisions. While traditional reference methods provide reliable data, they are often bulky, expensive, and difficult to maintain. Optical Particle Counters (OPCs) offer a cost-effective alternative, commonly used in clean rooms, residential spaces, and personal exposure monitoring. These devices rely on light scattering to measure PM concentrations. However, low cost OPCs face challenges related to calibration and measurement accuracy, requiring careful performance evaluation. This study used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, CONVERGE Studio and ANSYS Fluent, to simulate a simplified …

Algorithm For Predicting Bitcoin Fees, Mason Tulacz, Matthew Landrum, Kristian Simakoski, Mason Ellerbroek Apr 2025

Algorithm For Predicting Bitcoin Fees, Mason Tulacz, Matthew Landrum, Kristian Simakoski, Mason Ellerbroek

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Bitcoin was designed to be a decentralized peer-to-peer cash system, which creates scarcity in two ways: the total supply of Bitcoin available, and the block size of each block. The blocks, which form what is called the Bitcoin Blockchain, can contain at most 4 MB of data. Since the size of blocks is limited, and each transaction takes up some size, the number of transactions included in a block is necessarily limited. To combat this, users incentivize their transaction to be included in a block through a transaction fee, or the price the transactor pays a miner to include their …

Investigating The Effects Of Gibberellin Treatments On Different Dwarf Millet Genotypes And Identifying The Mechanism Responsible For Genetic Dwarfism, Macie Mccarty, Audrie Miller, Quinn Calvert, Abi Waters, Dania Creary, Justin Coleman

2025 Student Academic Showcase

Gibberellins (GAs) are essential plant hormones involved in regulating growth and development, particularly in stem elongation, seed germination, and flowering. In cereal crops like millet, dwarf genotypes are of agricultural interest due to their potential for increased stability and yield efficiency. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying dwarfism in millet remain unclear. This study investigates the response of various dwarf millet genotypes to gibberellin treatments and seeks to determine the genetic basis of their dwarfism. We hypothesize that genotypes with gibberellin biosynthesis deficiencies will exhibit increased stem elongation when treated with gibberellin, while genotypes with signal transduction defects will show minimal …
