An Improvement Finger Vein Authentication System Based On Pcanet Deep Learning And Hyper Parameter Machine Learning, Raniah Ali Mustafa, Tarek Abbes

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Finger vein authentication is a biometric technique that uses unique vein patterns within the finger to verify identity, ensuring security by scanning veins with near-infrared light to prevent counterfeiting. The reliability of this technology and its resistance to skin disorders make it highly appreciated. The motivation for using PCANet deep learning in finger vein authentication arises from the need for a more precise, secure, and effective biometric system. Conventional methods have trouble with image quality, noise, and illumination, whereas PCANet improves classification accuracy by employing principal component analysis (PCA) to extract deep features. Its lightweight structure guarantees computational efficiency while …

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Arabic script is exhibited in a cursive style, which is a departure from the norm in many common languages, and the shapes of letters are contingent on their positions within words. The form of the first letter is influenced by the subsequent letter, middle letters are shaped by both preceding and succeeding letters, and the shape of the final letter is determined by the preceding letter. Additionally, certain letters are found to have strikingly similar shapes, making Arabic text recognition a formidable challenge in computer vision. The challenge of detecting and recognizing Arabic handwritten text is addressed in this paper …

The Philosopher’S Art: The Alchemical And Religious Writings Of Sir Isaac Newton, Caleb J. Stamp Apr 2025

The Philosopher’S Art: The Alchemical And Religious Writings Of Sir Isaac Newton, Caleb J. Stamp

Senior Honors Theses

Sir Isaac Newton is inarguably one of the most famous yet divisive geniuses in human history. His writing touched on a staggering variety of topics, including chemistry, physics, and history, among others. Some of his less well-known works – most notably, his alchemical experiments and his prophetic commentaries – have created wildly conflicting views of both him and his theories. However, Newton’s alchemical and religious writings are crucial to understanding his broader worldview: namely, that the spiritual and natural aspects of the world worked together in a universe created by a supreme God who ordained that reality operates in a …

Analysis Of Rare Events In Healthcare Intervention Using Department Of Defense Data: Intravenous Immune Globulin Therapy For Bullous Pemphigoid, Onur Baser, Huseyin A. Yuce, Gabriela Samayoa

Publications and Research

Introduction

Rare events data have proven difficult to explain and predict. Standard statistical procedures can sharply underestimate the probability of rare events, such as intravenous immune globulin therapy (IVIg) for bullous pemphigoid.

Methods

This retrospective cross-sectional study used Department of Defense TRICARE data to determine factors associated with IVIg therapy among bullous pemphigoid patients. We used prior and weighted correction methods for logit regression to solve rare event bias.

Results

We identified 2,720 individuals diagnosed with bullous pemphigoid from 2019 to 2022, of which 14 were treated with IVIg. Patients who received IVIg therapy were younger (65.07 vs. 75.85, P …

Evaluating The Impact Of Sampling Pattern On The Validity Of Derived Dems: Wadi Yiba Basin As An Experimental Environment, Nadia Awad Al-Safri Dr.

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

The study aims to know the effect of the sample pattern on the validity of the DEM, relying on the analytical inductive approach through two stages. The first begins with deriving the DEMs via the Spline tool, and with a fixed sample size for the three samplings: (random, random with added 50m between the samples, and systematic), whereas the second depends on the evaluation both visually (hillshade and contour) and quantitatively (calculating the vertical accuracy based on the RMSE of the derived surface, and finding the differences between the surfaces of the three samples) of the derived models based on …

Publications and Research

Preoperative identification of extracapsular extension (ECE) in prostate cancer (PCa) is crucial for effective treatment planning, as ECE presence significantly increases the risk of positive surgical margins and early biochemical recurrence following radical prostatectomy. AutoRadAI, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) framework, was developed to address this clinical challenge while demonstrating broader potential for diverse medical imaging applications. The framework integrates T2-weighted MRI data with histopathology annotations, leveraging a dual convolutional neural network (multi-CNN) architecture. AutoRadAI comprises two key components: ProSliceFinder, which isolates prostate-relevant MRI slices, and ExCapNet, which evaluates ECE likelihood at the patient level. The system was trained and …

Energy-Based Control Approaches For Weakly Coupled Electromechanical Systems, Najmeh Javanmardi, Pablo Borja, Mohammad Javad Yazdanpanah, Jacquelien M. A. Scherpen

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper addresses the stabilization and trajectory-tracking problems for two classes of weakly coupled electromechanical systems. To this end, we formulate an energy-based model for these systems within the port-Hamiltonian framework. Then, we employ Lyapunov theory and the notion of contractive systems to develop control approaches in the port-Hamiltonian framework. Remarkably, these control methods eliminate the need to solve partial differential equations or implement any change of coordinates and are endowed with a physical interpretation. We also investigate the effect of coupled damping on the transient performance and convergence rate of the closed-loop system. Finally, the applicability of the proposed …

An optimal estimation (OE) technique has recently been developed for F region electron density (Ne) using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) limb sounding on low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites (COSMIC-2, Spire, and FengYun-3). This method provides unprecedented spatiotemporal sampling for global monthly Ne climatology within 100–500 km in 2 hr intervals. The global dataset, collected during mid to moderately high solar activity, is compared with leading models: IRI-2020 and NeQuick-2. Diurnal variations in summer, winter, and equinoctial months are examined for the F2-layer peak, as well as the topside and bottomside of the F region. The observed and modeled NmF2 …

Quantization For A Condensation System, Shivam Dubey, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury, Saurabh Verma Apr 2025

Quantization For A Condensation System, Shivam Dubey, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury, Saurabh Verma

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

For a given r∈(0,+∞), the quantization dimension of order r, if it exists, denoted by Dr(μ), represents the rate at which the nth quantization error of order r approaches zero as the number of elements n in an optimal set of n-means for μ tends to infinity. If Dr(μ) does not exist, we define D−−r(μ) and ¯¯¯Dr(μ) as the lower and the upper quantization dimensions of μ of order r, respectively. In this paper, we investigate the quantization dimension of the condensation measure μ associated with a condensation system ({Sj}Nj=1, (pj)Nj=0,ν). We provide two examples: one where ν is an …

Prime Theta-Curves From Torus Knots, Sam Nieman, Jack Calcut Apr 2025

Prime Theta-Curves From Torus Knots, Sam Nieman, Jack Calcut

Research Symposium

Classical knot theory is the placement problem for a circle in Euclidean 3-space or in the 3-sphere. That problem has been generalized in numerous ways. Knotted graph theory replaces the circle with a graph. Knotting of certain graphs has been well-studied. That includes the theta-graph consisting of two vertices connected by three edges---a copy of the letter theta. A theta-curve is an embedding of the theta-graph in 3-space or in the 3-sphere. Connected sum of knots yields the notion of a prime knot. Similarly, one may sum two theta-curves at a vertex and one may sum a theta-curve and a …

Field Notes From The Crumbling Ivory Tower, Emily Van Hoose

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Gone is the era of academic neutrality as American culture continues to grow and ride the turbulent waters of its political societal pillars. The saying “leave your baggage at the door” is not only incredibly outdated, but for anthropology students at UM it is impossible. The worries and curiosities of our students do not inexplicably stop when they open the doors to the social science building. Their concerns follow them not only into the classroom, but into their career prospects as well. Anthropology classes do not have the luxury of neutrality that other disciplines like mathematics, chemistry, and physics are …

When Do Jumps Matter? A Comparison Of Black-Scholes And Merton Jump Diffusion Models In Pricing European Options, Mai Nguyen Apr 2025

When Do Jumps Matter? A Comparison Of Black-Scholes And Merton Jump Diffusion Models In Pricing European Options, Mai Nguyen

Science Seminar

Under the direction of Dr. Giancarlo Schrementi

In 1973, Fischer Black and Myron Scholes introduced the Black-Scholes model as an objective quantitative method to price options that do not pay dividends. Over the years, this model has been modified to cover more complex derivatives and stocks, providing a foundational framework for traders and investors to understand option pricing in a systematic way. The formula is based on key assumptions that the volatility of the underlying asset remains unchanged through time and that the market returns should follow a constant log-normal distribution. However, these ideal assumptions do not always hold in …

The Magic Of Differential Forms And Why Physicists Don't Use Them, Rhyann Wilson Apr 2025

The Magic Of Differential Forms And Why Physicists Don't Use Them, Rhyann Wilson

Science Seminar

Under the direction of Dr. Tim Magee Vector calculus is the standard for performing calculations in many areas of physics, including electrodynamics. While mathematicians and physicists alike have always questioned whether or not there existed a method of calculation which could truly encapsulate the complexities of our physical world, about 20 years after Maxwell’s equations on electrodynamics were published there finally came a bit of a breakthrough in the form of a concept called differential forms. It’s been discovered that differential forms actually work quite well with vector calculus, the ways of “translating” between vector calculus and differential forms have …

Tau-Indifferent Parking Functions, Hannah Eubanks Apr 2025

Tau-Indifferent Parking Functions, Hannah Eubanks

Science Seminar

Under the direction of Dr. Molly Lynch

Parking functions have been well-studied for many years. Parking functions involve n cars, each with a preferred parking spot on a one-way street. Each car will try to park in its preferred spot but will take the next available if their preferred spot is taken. We introduce and study Tau-Indifferent Parking Functions, denoted 𝜏-Indiff., where one or more cars have no preference and will park in the first available spot. We will discover when a preference vector becomes a 𝜏-indiff parking function and how many 𝜏-indiff parking functions exist. By testing this rule, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Pyridine Alkoxide-Ligated Metal Complexes, Madison Updike, Taylor Nowak, Kavya Mattam

Academic Festival

The pyridine alkoxide ligand “pyalk” is an important structure in organometallic chemistry and has been ligated to several transition metals, most notably iridium and copper. These metal complexes have been remarkably active in water oxidation catalysis reactions, which are important for the development of artificial photosynthesis technologies. Despite its activity and relatively simple structure, the potential of pyalk-derived ligands has not been fully explored. The synthesis of a novel suite of pyridine alkoxide ligands may enable the further development of highly efficient and sustainable first-row transition metal catalysts. These ligands are based on the known pyalk scaffold and include variations …

This theory will be applied to model two board games, Chutes and Ladders and Monopoly, as Markov chains. We will use the results obtained from modeling them as Markov chains to analyze each board game individually.

Exploring Interspecies Relationships Through Differential Equations, Isabella Zanni Apr 2025

Exploring Interspecies Relationships Through Differential Equations, Isabella Zanni

Academic Festival

A differential equation relates an unknown function to one or more of its derivatives. Systems of differential equations can be used to model interspecies relationships. This paper will consider predator-prey and competition models. The equilibria of a system represent when the population rates of species are zero such that the populations are constant. We perform a stability analysis of the equilibria to determine if they are stable, unstable, or borderline. This stability will help us predict the population dynamics of the species modeled by the system.
