People's need for food is increasing day after day due to the large population increase that has occurred in human society, which has led to a significant increase in the activity of food product manufacturing companies in the world. Hence the necessary need to evaluate the performance of food production companies. We found that the best way to evaluate the performance of these companies is through social media comments, because it is the newest and most common method among people. In this paper, 4 machine learning techniques were relied upon to evaluate participants' comments in evaluating food production companies after …

Study Group Environments And Their Connection To Study Plans And Strategies, Tatyanna Caputo
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Students have a mental image of how they intend to study but may fail to anticipate possible distractions or unexpected obstacles. A potential solution is for students to collaborate in study groups. If students fear disappointing their fellow peers, they may be more likely to fulfill their intended plans. In addition, studying in groups may encourage the use of active study strategies. In this study, college students reported their upcoming study plans, which were then analyzed to see if students planned to work with others and use stronger study strategies. We correlated their plans with the students’ later self-reports on …

We are entering an exciting new era of data-driven weather prediction, where forecast models trained on historical data (including observations and reanalyses) offer an alternative to directly solving the governing equations of fluid dynamics. By capitalizing on a vast amount of available information – and capturing their inherent patterns that are not represented explicitly – such machine learning-based techniques have the potential to increase forecast accuracy, augmenting traditional physics-based equivalents. Here, we adapt and apply a promising machine learning framework – originally proposed by the present authors for regional prediction of ocean waves – to the operational forecasting of the …

Fact-Based Counter Narrative Generation To Combat Hate Speech, Brian Wilk, Homaira Huda Shomee, Suman Kalyan Maity, Sourav Medya
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Online hatred has become an increasingly pervasive issue, affecting individuals and communities across various digital platforms. To combat hate speech in such platforms, counter narratives (CNs) are regarded as an effective method. In recent years, there has been growing interest in using generative AI tools to construct CNs. However, most of the generative models produce generic responses to hate speech and can hallucinate, reducing their effectiveness. To address the above limitations, we propose a counter narrative generation method that enhances CNs by providing non-aggressive, fact-based narratives with relevant background knowledge from two distinct sources, including a web search module. Furthermore, …

Ai-Assisted Model-Guided Image Reconstruction Methods For Photoacoustic And Ultrasound Computed Tomography, Luke Joseph Lozenski
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) and ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) are two emerging medical modalities that hold great promise for both pre-clinical and clinical imaging applications, including cancer diagnosis and management. PACT is a hybrid imaging modality that combines benefits from both optical and acoustic imaging to provide high contrast images of biological absorbers. USCT is an ultrasound imaging modality that provides high-resolution quantitative images of acoustic properties utilizing accurate physics models. Both PACT and USCT can be applied for monitoring or diagnosis of cancer and are non-invasive and radiation free. However, both imaging modalities are in the early stages of …

Multi-instrument studies have recently shed new light on the morphology of sporadic E, especially intense sporadic E. Here we present simultaneous observations of dense sporadic E (Es) structures using the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) radio telescopes and a Digisonde Portable Sounder 4D (DPS4D). Our coordinated observations show that the LWA radio telescopes in central New Mexico can reliably locate regions of dense Es structures as they pass over a Digisonde located over 500 km away in Texas. The LWA appears to be most sensitive to the densest Es structures, which also appear to contain irregularities with vertical …

Metastatic pancreatic cancer leads to a fatal outcome, with a median progression-free survival of approximately six months when utilizing the most successful combination of chemotherapeutic regimens. When drug resistance develops, it facilitates an increase in primary tumor growth and new and growing metastases. Patients inevitably and quickly succumb to their disease and die. Notably, chemotherapy has an unintended impact on the development of drug resistance through the enhancement of EMT development and the enrichment of cancer stem cells (CSC). Recent report discovered that neuraminidase-1 (Neu-1) regulates EMT induction, angiogenesis, and cellular proliferation by the activation of several receptor tyrosine kinases. …

In this study, the potential antimutagenic/cytoprotective effect of the oil extract (2.5µg/ml) from Anethum graveolens L. (Dill) on oxidative DNA damage was tested. The experiments were carried out to inhibit mutagenicity induced by potassium bromated (KBrO3-9g/l) in Allium assay using mitotic activities and nuclear DNA contents. Result showed a clear reduction in radical length in all KBrO3-treated groups compared to control plants. Mitotic activity, measured by mitotic index (MI) and mitotic stages, were significantly decreased in meristematic cells after KBrO3 application, The results showed that mitotic index (MI) was decreased to reach about 0.8 at 24 hrs compared with 23.9% …
Supercontinuum Generation By Controlling Pitch In Photonic Crystal Fibers, Mohammed Salim Jasim Al-Taie
Supercontinuum Generation By Controlling Pitch In Photonic Crystal Fibers, Mohammed Salim Jasim Al-Taie
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
The influence of varying the distance between air holes (pitch) on the geography of solitone propagation through a photonic crystal fiber has been tested. The study depends on the Split-Step Fourier method and the results quantified using MATLAB. The first-order solitone was tested with the change in pitch, and it was found that there is a clear decay in the amplitude of the resulting pulse with an increase in pitch. When increasing the pitch in the case of second-order solitons, it was noticed that the pulse would split into multiple-order solitons down to higher-order solitons with the increase in pitch. …

Analysis Of Fractional Linear Multi-Step Methods Of Order Four From Super-Convergence, Haniffa Mohamed Nasir, Khadija Al Hasani
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
We analyze two implicit fractional linear multi-step methods of order four for solving fractional initial value problems. The methods are derived from the Grunwald-Letnikov approximation of fractional derivative at a non-integer shift point with super-convergence. The weight coefficients of the methods are computed from fundamental G unwald weights, making them computationally efficient when compared with other known methods of order four. We also show that the stability regions are larger than that of the fractional Adams-Moulton and fractional backward difference formula methods. We present numerical results and illustrations to verify that the theoretical results obtained are indeed satisfied.
Analysis Of New Type Of Second-Order Fractional Linear Multi-Step Method With Improved Stability, H.M. Nasir
Analysis Of New Type Of Second-Order Fractional Linear Multi-Step Method With Improved Stability, H.M. Nasir
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
We present and investigate a new type of implicit fractional linear multi-step method of order two for fractional initial value problems. The method is obtained from the second-order superconvergence of the Grünwald-Letnikov approximation of the fractional derivative at a non-integer shift point. The method coincides with the backward difference method of order two for the classical initial value problem when the order of the derivative is one. The weight coefficients of the proposed method are obtained from the Grünwald weights and are hence computationally efficient compared with that of the fractional backward difference formula of order two. The stability properties …

Solving Unconstrained Optimization Problems By A New Conjugate Gradient Method With Sufficient Descent Property, Farzad Rahpeymaii, Majid Rostami
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
There have been some conjugate gradient methods with strong convergence but numerical instability and conversely. Improving these methods is an interesting idea to produce new methods with both strong convergence and numerical stability. In this paper, a new hybrid conjugate gradient method is introduced based on the Fletcher formula (CD) with strong convergence and the Liu and Storey formula (LS) with good numerical results. New directions satisfy the sufficient descent property, independent of line search. Under some mild assumptions, the global convergence of new hybrid method is proved. Numerical results on unconstrained CUTEst test problems show that the new algorithm …

Optical Properties Of Photonic Crystal Fibers With Fluid Cores, Mohammed Salim Jasim Al-Taie
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
The objective of this research is to compare pulses travelling through different photonic crystal fiber cores (DPCFC) using both finite element method (FEM) /split step Fourier method (SSFM). A unique DCPCF design with exceptionally high non-linearity has been introduced to achieve ultra-high pulse amplitude. Via a generalized non-linear equation, we evaluate the refractive index ratio and dispersion, for each type which is used, as well as output amplitude for different cores in different photonic crystal fiber core by utilizing the solution for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). Lastly, the findings are compared to different photonic crystal fiber design parameters. This …

Lithology Characteristics And Diagenesis Of Late Pleistocene-Holocene Coastal Terraces Of The Yemeni Red Sea: Implication For Paleoclimatic Records, Ahmed Saif Al-Mikhlafi
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
The development of Holocene-Pleistocene fringing reefs in the Yemeni Red Sea (YRS) is controlled by sediment input and variations in accommodation space. Lithostratigraphic correlation of environmental facies in the investigated sites shows a sequence of successive events, and each can be subdivided into 2 or 3 main sequences. The upper sequence is characterized by the dominance of coral and coralline algal frameworks. The lower sequences are varied and can be attributed to spatial and temporal variability. Meteoric diagenesis is the most dominant and includes dissolution, calcrete, and coral recrystallization. Lithologic and mineralogic investigations of the Pleistocene-Holocene coral reefs display three …
Improved Diagonal Hessian Approximations For Large-Scale Unconstrained Optimization, Ahmed Al-Siyabi
Improved Diagonal Hessian Approximations For Large-Scale Unconstrained Optimization, Ahmed Al-Siyabi
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
We consider some diagonal quasi-Newton methods for solving large-scale unconstrained optimization problems. A simple and effective approach for diagonal quasi-Newton algorithms is presented by proposing new updates of diagonal entries of the Hessian. Moreover, we suggest employing an extra BFGS update of the diagonal updating matrix and use its diagonal again. Numerical experiments on a collection of standard test problems show, in particular, that the proposed diagonal quasi-Newton methods perform substantially better than certain available diagonal methods.
Improved Fletcher-Reeves Methods Based On New Scaling Techniques, Amal Al-Saidi
Improved Fletcher-Reeves Methods Based On New Scaling Techniques, Amal Al-Saidi
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
This paper introduces a scaling parameter to the Fletcher-Reeves (FR) nonlinear conjugate gradient method. The main aim is to improve its theoretical and numerical properties when applied with inexact line searches to unconstrained optimization problems. We show that the sufficient descent and global convergence properties of Al-Baali for the FR method with a fairly accurate line search are maintained. We also consider the possibility of extending this result to less accurate line search for appropriate values of the scaling parameter. The reported numerical results show that several values for the proposed scaling parameter improve the performance of the FR method …

A Surface Network Based On Polytyramine/ Gold Nanoparticles: Characterization, Kinetics, Thermodynamics And Selective Determination Of Norepinephrine, Emad A. Khudaish, Arwa Al-Maskari
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
A solid-state sensor was fabricated by a spontaneous electrochemical deposition of polytyramine (Ptyr) film onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) which was further peripherally supported by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The surface materials of the developed sensor (AuNPs.Ptyr-GCE) were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The rate constant of charge transfers (kct) of the as-prepared sensor (8.77 × 10-4 cm/s) was evaluated by fitting the charge transfer resistance (Rct) data in the presence of ferric-ferrous hexacyanide redox couple solution, [Fe(CN)6]3-/4-. The voltammetric behavior of norepinephrine (NOR) was confirmed to …

Travelling Wave Solutions For Fisher’S Equation Using The Extended Homogeneous Balance Method, Mohammad M. Fares, Usama M. Abdelsalam, Faiza M. Allehiany
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
In this work, the extended homogeneous balance method is used to derive exact solutions of nonlinear evolution equations. With the aid of symbolic computation, many new exact travelling wave solutions have been obtained for Fisher’s equation and Burgers-Fisher equation. Fisher’s equation has been widely used in studying the population for various systems, especially in biology, while Burgers-Fisher equation has many physical applications such as in gas dynamics and fluid mechanics. The method used can be applied to obtain multiple travelling wave solutions for nonlinear partial differential equations.
Predator-Prey Model With Refuge, Fear And Z-Control, Ibrahim M. Elmojtaba, Kawkab Al-Amri, Qamar J.A. Khan
Predator-Prey Model With Refuge, Fear And Z-Control, Ibrahim M. Elmojtaba, Kawkab Al-Amri, Qamar J.A. Khan
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
In this paper, we consider a predator-prey model incorporating fear and refuge. Our results show that the predator-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if the ratio between the death rate of predators and the conversion rate of prey into predator is greater than the value of prey in refuge at equilibrium. We also show that the co-existence equilibrium points are locally asymptotically stable if the value of the prey outside refuge is greater than half of the carrying capacity. Numerical simulations show that when the intensity of fear increases, the fraction of the prey inside refuge increases; however, it has …

The orbits space of an irreducible representation of a finite group is a variety whose coordinate ring is finitely generated by homogeneous invariant polynomials. Boris Dubrovin showed that the orbits spaces of the reflection groups acquire the structure of polynomial Frobenius manifolds. Dubrovin’s method to construct examples of Frobenius manifolds on orbits spaces was carried for other linear representations of discrete groups which have in common that the coordinate rings of the orbits spaces are polynomial rings. In this article, we show that the orbits space of an irreducible representation of a dicyclic group acquires two structures of Frobenius manifolds. …
