Out Of The Ashes: One Teacher's Journey Implementing A Blended Learning Intervention Integrating The Flipped Classroom Model And Student-Selected Independent Reading, Michael John Hockwater

Theses and Dissertations

Sixth-grade Academic Intervention Services (AIS) students at Wyndemere Middle School (WMS) in Western New York demonstrated a lack of engagement in AIS English Language Arts (ELA) class. In hopes of increasing their engagement, the teacher-researcher implemented a blended learning intervention that incorporated aspects of the flipped classroom model and student-selected texts. The results of this action research qualitative case study were promising, with many student participants expressing an increased sense of engagement and enjoyment of AIS ELA class.

Improving Image Quality In Electrical Capacitance Tomography Using Otsu Thresholding, Josiah Nombo Apr 2025

Improving Image Quality In Electrical Capacitance Tomography Using Otsu Thresholding, Josiah Nombo

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is an imaging technique used in industrial process monitoring, particularly for monitoring and measuring the composition of multiphase flows. Despite its widespread application, the commonly used Linear Back Projection (LBP) algorithm often produces low-quality images due to its limited ability to handle high permittivity contrasts and nonlinearities. This study investigates the use of Otsu thresholding as a post-processing technique to enhance ECT image quality. By maximizing inter-class variance in the image histogram, Otsu thresholding improves contrast, clarity, and structural definition, enabling more effective segmentation of oil and gas components in multiphase flows. The proposed Otsu-based reconstruction …

An Efficient Blockchain-Based Privacy Preservation Scheme For Smart Grids, Mohamad Badra, Rouba Borghol

All Works

Smart grids have revolutionized electricity management and distribution, but they also generate and transmit vast amounts of consumer data, raising privacy concerns. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based solution to preserve user's privacy in smart grids and to mitigates data forgery, profiling, and man-in-the-middle attacks. Moreover, our solution provides security services such as authentication and non-repudiation to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data and ensure accountability and traceability. We validate our approach through testing and show that it is a simple, scalable, cost-effective solution with minimal computational processing overhead.

Analysis And Derivation Of The Compressible Euler System With Nonlinear Velocity Alignment: An Investigation Into Collective Behavior, Mckenzie Meredith Black Apr 2025

Analysis And Derivation Of The Compressible Euler System With Nonlinear Velocity Alignment: An Investigation Into Collective Behavior, Mckenzie Meredith Black

Theses and Dissertations

Collective behavior refers to the observable patterns, actions, or movements that emerge within a group of entities, such as individuals, animals, or particles, when they interact with each other. In this study, we concentrate on the pressureless compressible Euler system, expanding it to incorporate a family of nonlinear velocity alignment. This extension represents a nonlinear iteration of the Euler-alignment system within collective dynamics, revealing intriguing asymptotic emergent phenomena such as alignment and flocking. Our investigation explores different types of nonlinearity and nonlocal communication protocols, unveiling a diverse spectrum of asymptotic behaviors within the system.

In focusing on the derivation, we …

The field of deep learning (DL) has received considerable attention in recent years. Thanks to rapid growth in computational power, the ability to collect massive datasets, and improvements in software and algorithms, DL is now routinely applied to areas as diverse as computer vision, natural language processing, and bioinformatics. At the same time, DL is only starting to be explored in the context of classical statistical inference problems such as bootstrapping, quantile regression, and mixture modeling. In this dissertation, we develop new DL methodology for three classical statistical problems: 1) weighted M-estimation, 2) joint quantile regression, and 3) mixing density …

Understanding The Through-Space Intermolecular Interactions Of Isothiourea Catalysts In Acylation/Silylation Reactions Of Secondary Alcohols, Ziyuan Gong

Theses and Dissertations

Through space interactions, including cation-π interaction, lone pair-πinteraction, steric hinderance etc. play a central role in organocatalytic reaction. They can control the reactivity or the selectivity of an organic reaction. Previous work in our group has already shown that the chiral isothiourea compounds can catalyze the acylation as well as silylation reaction of secondary alcohol with the possible cation-πinteraction between the catalyst and substrate. However, there is lack of study to understand how the delocalization of the positive charge would affect the reaction rate and whether some unexpected inter- or intramolecular interaction could help stabilize …

Supershift Properties For Nonanalytic Signals, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini, Daniele Carlo Struppa, Alain Yger

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The phenomenon of superoscillations is of great interest in microscopy, antenna design, and material sciences. This phenomenon has been generalized and has given rise to the concept of supershift, which is a far reaching extension that applies to functions that may present discontinuous derivatives. From this perspective, this is a notion that might have significant applications. This paper will provide an up to date report on the complex connections between the concept of supershift and that of analyticity.

Stability Of Space-Time Finite Element Discretizations Of Subdiffusive Time-Fractional Differential Equations, Gabriel Kenneth Staton Apr 2025

Stability Of Space-Time Finite Element Discretizations Of Subdiffusive Time-Fractional Differential Equations, Gabriel Kenneth Staton

Theses and Dissertations

The study of anamolous diffusion, and in particular of subdiffusive time-fractional differential equations, is of great interest for its ability to describe transport of particles through porous media. The time-fractional derivatives in these problems are nonlocal, which notably hinders performance of classical time-stepping methods. As a result, there is significant interest in using simultaneous space-time discretizations for these subdiffusive problems, which have the additional benefit of significantly relaxing the regularity requirements for candidate solutions. These types of Petrov-Galerkin schemes require a careful choice of discretized trial and test spaces in order to guarantee stability; in particular, the usual Galerkin choice …

Developing Predictive Mathematical Model For Optimizing Coating Weight Variation In Galvalume Production: A Case Study Of A Metal Industry, Victoria Mahabi Apr 2025

Developing Predictive Mathematical Model For Optimizing Coating Weight Variation In Galvalume Production: A Case Study Of A Metal Industry, Victoria Mahabi

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Variations in coating weight for galvanized steel sheets can result in notable differences between batches. Such variations may cause various issues, such as diminished corrosion resistance, lower mechanical strength, and visual defects, which can ultimately drive-up costs, lead to customer dissatisfaction, and pose safety risks. Even with attempts to manage elements like air knife pressure and line speed, coating weight inconsistencies remain challenging. The research focuses on developing a predictive mathematical model designed to optimize variations in coating weight during Galvalume production. The critical parameters influencing coating weight variation were identified and analysed using a systematic literature review, primary data …
