Functional Morphology Of The Primate Knee And Its Implications For Hominin Bipedal Mechanics, Catherine K. Miller May 2025

Functional Morphology Of The Primate Knee And Its Implications For Hominin Bipedal Mechanics, Catherine K. Miller

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Bipedal locomotion is central to the human condition, having shaped our evolutionary trajectory since its early emergence in the hominin lineage. Despite its importance, key questions remain about its origins and evolutionary trajectory. While many studies have focused on locomotor-related anatomies, comparatively less attention has been paid to the knee joint – a structure critical to the primate locomotor repertoire. This dissertation aims to clarify the form-function relationship of the knee in extant primates to better infer the locomotor behaviors of Miocene hominoids and Plio-Pleistocene hominins. To address these questions, this research employs a multifaceted analytical approach, integrating linear measurements, …

Studies In Algebraic Cycles: Hodge Theory Of Degenerations, Regulators, And Cluster Varieties, Ricardo Jaime Acuna May 2025

Studies In Algebraic Cycles: Hodge Theory Of Degenerations, Regulators, And Cluster Varieties, Ricardo Jaime Acuna

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation brings together results in Hodge theory and the theory of cluster varieties. The second chapter, based on a paper written in collaboration with Devin Akman and Matt Kerr, uses admissible normal functions to establish the first finiteness result for zero-dimensional components of the Hodge locus. The third chapter, based on joint work with Matt Kerr, shows that weak polar- ized relations constrain possible adjacencies of mixed Hodge structures across boundary strata in geometric compactifications. The fourth chapter gives a geometric construction of a 6-dimensional cluster variety with a disconnected mutation graph, as discovered by Yan Zhou. These three …

A Continuous-Heat-Flux Phase Change Model For Simulating Realistic Two-Phase Unsaturated Evaporation Processes, Thanh Hoang Phan, Cho Ning Huang, Chirag R. Kharangate May 2025

A Continuous-Heat-Flux Phase Change Model For Simulating Realistic Two-Phase Unsaturated Evaporation Processes, Thanh Hoang Phan, Cho Ning Huang, Chirag R. Kharangate

Faculty Scholarship

Accurately modeling liquid-vapor mass transfer rates is essential for optimizing cryogenic fluid management processes critical to advancing future space missions. This study introduces a continuous-heat-flux phase change model proposed to simulate conditions observed in realistic two-phase unsaturated evaporation phenomena. The mass transfer rate across the two-phase interface is calculated directly based on the local interfacial continuous heat flux on both liquid and vapor phases, effectively accounting for superheated, saturated, and subcooled liquid effects without requiring any empirical tuning parameters. Moreover, phase change occurs exclusively within interfacial cells, ensuring the sharp representation of deformed evaporating interfaces with high accuracy. The proposed …

A Complete Study Of Benjamin Bona Mahony Type Equations, Pamela Guerrero May 2025

A Complete Study Of Benjamin Bona Mahony Type Equations, Pamela Guerrero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this dissertation is to complete a study of Benjamin Bona Mahony (BBM) type equations. These are non-linear dispersive partial differential equations. The original BBM equation, also known as the regularized long-wave equation, was presented as an alternative to the Korteweg de Vries equation, and it has wide-ranging applications, including water waves and plasma physics. The original BBM equation is well studied. After an introduction of background materials and an explanation of notation, I begin by considering the modified BBM equation; here the nonlinear term is cubic. When the initial data are in the proper Sobolev space, the …

Extended gamma-ray emission around isolated pulsars at TeV energies, also known as TeV halos, have been found around a handful of middle-aged pulsars. The halos are significantly more extended than their pulsar wind nebulae but much smaller than the particle diffusion length in the interstellar medium. The origin of TeV halos is unknown. Interpretations invoke either local effects related to the environment of a pulsar or generic particle transport behaviors. The latter scenario predicts that TeV halos would be a universal phenomenon for all pulsars. We searched for extended gamma-ray emission around 36 isolated middle-aged pulsars identified by radio and …

Ts-Ratgnn: Two-Stage Spectral Graph Neural Network With Explicitly Optimized Rational Filters May 2025

Ts-Ratgnn: Two-Stage Spectral Graph Neural Network With Explicitly Optimized Rational Filters

Defensive Publications Series

Approximation-based spectral graph neural networks, which construct graph filters via function approximation, have demonstrated significant success in graph learning tasks. While existing methods predominantly rely on polynomial approximations for filter construction, rational approximation, a potentially superior alternative, remains largely underexplored. Previous attempts to utilize rational approximations have faced challenges, including high computational costs or reliance on polynomial intermediaries, limiting their full potential. This paper introduces TS-RatGNN, a novel spectral GNN featuring an explicitly-optimized rational filter. TS-RatGNN employs a distinctive two-stage framework: it sequentially applies numerator and denominator filters to the input signal. This streamlines the model architecture, facilitates efficient implementation, …

Are Large Language Models Conscious?, Judah Hays May 2025

Are Large Language Models Conscious?, Judah Hays

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This work evaluates the possibility of a conscious large language model (LLM) under the parameters of Integrated Information Theory (IIT). First, we examine the methodology behind IIT as a scientific theory of consciousness. Second, we detail the system requirements for consciousness under IIT. Third, we examine the basic architecture of modern LLMs. Finally, we subject the network architecture of current LLMs to the system requirements of IIT, evaluating each “physical postulate” IIT espouses individually. We conclude that LLMs meet none of IIT’s requirements for a physical system to be conscious, and briefly discuss the implications for future research.

Modeling Predator-Prey Interactions With Ode Systems, Avery Boland May 2025

Modeling Predator-Prey Interactions With Ode Systems, Avery Boland

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Systems of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE) are a common tool used to study population dynamics. Here, we analyze a predator-prey ODE system, which models two populations in the wild, where one preys upon the other. The system also describes the Allee Effect which is key in describing species that rely on collectivist behaviors, to derive conditions for stability. We found that the stability of the system is predominantly determined by the relationship between a hyperparameter derived from the description of the predator species, and the carrying capacity of the prey population.

Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Drug Addiction: Insights From The Predictive Processing Framework, Sera Parag Gandhi May 2025

Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Drug Addiction: Insights From The Predictive Processing Framework, Sera Parag Gandhi

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Drug addiction, a globally prevalent and burdensome psychiatric disorder, poses a significant challenge to conventional treatments, necessitating a deeper understanding of its mechanisms and exploration of alternative approaches for effective intervention. Despite initial success in research trials, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been met with skepticism due to a lack of comprehensive understanding of their underlying treatment mechanisms. The present paper argues that the predictive processing (PP) framework can provide unifying accounts of addiction and MBIs, and that a closer examination of the underlying mechanisms involved in both the disorder and the treatment can offer important insights for intervention and recovery. …

The Effect Of Boom Leveling On Spray Dispersion, Miguel Bustamante, Juan F. Vivanco, Travis A. Burgers May 2025

The Effect Of Boom Leveling On Spray Dispersion, Miguel Bustamante, Juan F. Vivanco, Travis A. Burgers

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Automatic boom height systems reduce the variability of agricultural sprayer boom height. When a boom is not at its target height, this can lead to uneven spray dispersion from the nozzles. Boom heights and sprayer position were previously measured in time for three commercially-available boom leveling systems for three test runs for at least three speeds over each of a mild, medium and rough terrain course. A computational model was created to use measured spray dispersion from a nozzle, measured boom heights in time, and measured sprayer position in time to calculate a spray coverage map. The model was used …

A Divine Conceptualist Interpretation Of Modal Structuralism, David Freeman, Cory Krause May 2025

A Divine Conceptualist Interpretation Of Modal Structuralism, David Freeman, Cory Krause

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2024

Structuralism is a contemporary philosophy of mathematics which asserts that the content of mathematics is not located in the objects of its study but rather the relations which hold between those objects. Modal Structuralism, in turn, emphasizes that mathematical truth concerns modal statements about what would be necessarily true of a system if such relations held. Finally, Theistic Conceptual Realism argues that possible worlds are in fact instances of divine self-knowledge, and thereby provides a means of grounding modality in the mind of God. In this paper, we argue that Modal Structuralism, as interpreted via Theistic Conceptual Realism, provides a …
