The Forgotten Dimensions Of Teaching?, David M. Keithly Jan 2016

The Forgotten Dimensions Of Teaching?, David M. Keithly

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

In discussions of technological innovations in education, basic and time-honored aspects of teaching are too often omitted. Analyses are at times regrettably narrow in scope,. unsatisfactory in their neglect to integrate the old with the new. The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon certain rudiments of teaching with specific reference to the role of the teacher and to affective aspects of education. To say it all at once: in discussing innovation one must be heedful of basics. Technological advances can, of . course, facilitate learning, but technology in education, as is the case in other areas as well, …

Traditional Versus Technological Approaches To Teaching Mathematics And Physics, Loren L. Vian Jan 2016

Traditional Versus Technological Approaches To Teaching Mathematics And Physics, Loren L. Vian

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

The use of technology in the classroom can be an integral part of the learning process. It allows the instructor the freedom to explore a broader range of problems, concepts, or activities. The technology can reduce the long "busy work" problems to a few minutes without diminishing any of the concepts. The problems may be real without the "nice" numbers to make the calculations easier. The student and instructor may explore several variations of the problem in a short time with little effort. The laser disk opens other possibilities to bring in examples too costly for many laboratories or classrooms. …

Vortex Circulation And Polarity Patterns In Closely Packed Cap Arrays, Robert Streubel, Florian Kronast, Christopher F. Reiche, Thomas Mühl, Anja U.B. Wolter, Oliver G. Schmidt, Denys Makarov

Robert Streubel Papers

We studied curvature-driven modifications to the magnetostatic coupling of vortex circulation and polarity in soft-magnetic closely packed cap arrays. A phase diagram for the magnetic remanent/transition states at room temperature as a function of diameter and thickness was assembled. For specimens with vortex remanent state (40 nm-thick Permalloy on 330 nm spherical nanoparticles), both vortex circulation and polarity were visualized. Intercap coupling upon vortex nucleation leads to the formation of vortex circulation patterns in closely packed arrays. The remanent circulation pattern can be tailored choosing the direction of the applied magnetic field with respect to the symmetry axis of the …

Effect Of Base-Pairing Partner On The Thermodynamic Stability Of The Diastereomeric Spiroiminodihydantoin Lesion, Brian Gruessner, Megana Dwarakanath, Elizabeth Stewart, Yoon Bae, Elizabeth R. Jamieson Jan 2016

Effect Of Base-Pairing Partner On The Thermodynamic Stability Of The Diastereomeric Spiroiminodihydantoin Lesion, Brian Gruessner, Megana Dwarakanath, Elizabeth Stewart, Yoon Bae, Elizabeth R. Jamieson

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Oxidation of guanine by reactive oxygen species and high valent metals produces damaging DNA base lesions like 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoG). 8-oxoG can be further oxidized to form the spiroiminodihydantoin (Sp) lesion, which is even more mutagenic. DNA polymerases preferentially incorporate purines opposite the Sp lesion, and DNA glycosylases excise the Sp lesion from the duplex, although the rate of repair is different for the two Sp diastereomers. To further understand the biological processing of the Sp lesion, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies were performed on a series of 15-mer DNA duplexes. The thermal and thermodynamic stability of each of the Sp …

Experimental Evidence For Drought Induced Alternative Stable States Of Soil Moisture, David A. Robinson, Scott B. Jones, Inma Lebron, Sabine Reinsch, Maria T. Dominguez, Andrew R. Smith, Davey L. Jones, Miles R. Marshall, Bridget A. Emmett

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Ecosystems may exhibit alternative stable states (ASS) in response to environmental change. Modelling and observational data broadly support the theory of ASS, however evidence from manipulation experiments supporting this theory is limited. Here, we provide long-term manipulation and observation data supporting the existence of drought induced alternative stable soil moisture states (irreversible soil wetting) in upland Atlantic heath, dominated by Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull. Manipulated repeated moderate summer drought, and intense natural summer drought both lowered resilience resulting in shifts in soil moisture dynamics. The repeated moderate summer drought decreased winter soil moisture retention by ∼10%. However, intense summer drought, …

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The Indian Peak-Caliente Caldera Complex, or IPCCC, is an ideal site to study how large-scale tectonic forces can influence mineralogy on a local scale. This research was completed and compiled by the Tectonics and Mineralogy classes at Southern Utah University during a joint class field study and subsequent laboratory analyses. During the field trip, the main focuses were to observe caldera collapse relationships and ignimbrite features and to collect samples at Condor Canyon and English Canyon, two sites near the border between Nevada and Utah within the IPCCC. After the field trip, the Tectonics class completed a detailed literature review …

Coal Clinker Site In The Late Cretaceous Blackhawk Formation, Castle Gate, Utah, Usa, Robert L. Eves, Larry E. Davis

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

When sedimentary host rock is heated as a result of coal seam fires, the host rock is pyro-metamorphosed (high temperature/ low pressure) resulting in the formation of paralava, a low-grade metamorphic rock formed adjacent to coal seams. This paper describes an outcrop locality of clinker (paralava) in the Upper Cretaceous Blackhawk Formation within the Book Cliffs coalfields of central Utah, which formed as the result of a coal seam fire.

Tunneling Anisotropic Magnetoresistance In A Magnetic Tunnel Junction With Half-Metallic Electrodes, John D. Burton, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) is the difference in resistance of a magnetic tunnel junction due to a change in magnetization direction of one or both magnetic electrodes with respect to the flow of current. We present the results of first-principles density functional calculations of the TAMR effect in magnetic tunnel junctions with La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) electrodes and a SrTiO3 (STO) tunneling barrier. We find an ∼500% difference in resistance between magnetization in the plane and out of the plane. This large TAMR effect originates from the half-metallic nature of LSMO: When magnetization is out of …

There are over 70,000 NCAA football players and 450 Division III schools sponsor football programs, yet limited research exists on vascular health of athletes. This study aimed to compare vascular and cardiovascular health measures between football players and nonathlete controls. Twenty-three athletes and 19 nonathletes participated. Vascular health measures included flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT). Cardiovascular measures included clinic and 24 hr BP levels, body composition, VO2 max, and fasting glucose/cholesterol levels. Compared to controls, football players had a worse vascular and …

The Real Footprint Of Electric Vehicles, And What That Could Mean For Our Future, Krista Brown Jan 2016

The Real Footprint Of Electric Vehicles, And What That Could Mean For Our Future, Krista Brown

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper looks at the impact of electric vehicles on CO2 emissions specifically based on the type of electricity used in each New England state analyzed. The research looks at the question of whether or not emissions will in fact be lowered as electric cars start to take the majority of vehicles used instead of the conventional cars that take up a much larger percent of the motor vehicles used today. Taking into account the use of electricity and how many sources of electricity also release a substantial amount of emissions, we see how valid the public opinion of electric …

Socioeconomic Attributes’ Relationship To Green Commercial Office Buildings, Tianyang Zhou

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper examines the relationship between the socioeconomic attributes of a state and its green commercial office space adaptation. I hypothesize that a state with high socioeconomic status will have a high green building adoption. Additionally, the high socioeconomic status states may be more likely to invest in green commercial buildings with higher LEED certification levels, and various types of LEED commericial office projects are affected by the socoeconomic attributes differently.

Who Cares About The Environment? A Study Of Environmental Behavior In Maine, Chandler L. Blake Jan 2016

Who Cares About The Environment? A Study Of Environmental Behavior In Maine, Chandler L. Blake

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Identifying and targeting environmentally minded people is crucial to making any environmental campaign successful. It allows you to advertise to the people who will be the most helpful and supportive to your cause. The goal of this study is to identify the general demographics of environmentally minded people. To do this I examine voting data through each county in Maine and run a regression to test whether income, education level, and household size have any correlation to how the county votes on environmental issues. I found that the higher a county’s income, the more environmentally friendly their voting. I also …

Analyzing Consumers’ Willingness To Pay For Eco-Labeled Seafood Products In Coastal And Inland Maine Counties, Gaby E. Carpenter Jan 2016

Analyzing Consumers’ Willingness To Pay For Eco-Labeled Seafood Products In Coastal And Inland Maine Counties, Gaby E. Carpenter

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Around the world, green labels are used for a wide range of food products, both in grocery stores and restaurants. Often, the price for these labeled products is higher due to higher production costs associated with the goods. This leads to demand for these goods in the market and consumers that are willing to pay. Here, I will examine the willingness to pay for three different eco-labeled seafood dishes at a Maine restaurant using a consumer choice experiment survey. I will use this survey to conduct a benefits transfer analysis to approximate the willingness to pay of consumers in each …

Do Peers Get Punished: Stock Market Effect Of Bp Oil Spill On Peers, Yuga Koda Jan 2016

Do Peers Get Punished: Stock Market Effect Of Bp Oil Spill On Peers, Yuga Koda

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper examines the stock market reaction to the British Petroleum oil spill on April 20, 2010. This event study looks at different sectors that may be affected by the oil spill. It finds that different industries do not have significant abnormal returns, with two exceptions. First, utilities companies have a very small positive abnormal return for a short period of time after the incident. Second, when only looking at BP's direct competitors, there is a statistically significant negative abnormal return, implying that BP's competitors are punished for BP's mishap.

Media Effects On Solar Panel Installations Across 20 States, Casey Romeo Jan 2016

Media Effects On Solar Panel Installations Across 20 States, Casey Romeo

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper looks at the relationship between media coverage of solar power and the solar panel installation at a state level. Specifically, it aims to find if more newspaper articles cause more households to adopt solar energy. Use data from 20 states from 2009 to 2014. I find that there is a modest, yet positive and statistically significant relationship between newspaper articles and installations, which suggests that the media does influence the decision to install solar panels. There is possible endogeneity between these two variables. Disentangling this endogeneity is beyond the scope of this research and would be a topic …

Renewable Energy Consumption: Initiatives In Colorado And Washington, Robin K. Doroff Jan 2016

Renewable Energy Consumption: Initiatives In Colorado And Washington, Robin K. Doroff

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper examines the use of policy mechanisms to increase renewable energy consumption within the United States. In order to effectively measure the change of renewable energy consumption, I analyze two initiatives that promote energy consumption from renewable sources and overall increases in energy conservation. Colorado and Washington had approved initiatives in the years 2004 and 2006, respectively. Although the results are not entirely statistically significant, I find that the initiatives lead to increases in total renewable energy consumption and decreases in total energy use.
