Property Value Changes From Public Transportation: How The Greenbush Commuter Line Affected Property Values, Sarah C. Evans Jan 2016

Property Value Changes From Public Transportation: How The Greenbush Commuter Line Affected Property Values, Sarah C. Evans

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Prior studies have investigated the impact on property values to the proximity of established public transportation stations. Public transportation is thought to increase value of towns and properties, giving residents more options for transportation to and around the city. Both benefits and consequences of public transportation exist, allowing for either a raise or lower of property values in towns with stops. This paper analyzes the Greenbush Commuter line in Massachusetts, seeing if the proximity to the stops has an affect on the property of values in the towns. A difference – in – difference model is used to investigate a …

The Effectiveness Of The Colby College Electricity Competition On Promoting Electricity Conservation To Students, Jeff Vaz

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper examines the effectiveness of the Colby College electricity reduction competition in altering students’ behavior to conserve electricity. The Colby College electricity reduction competition is an information-based policy that Colby implemented to promote the conservation of electricity, which are a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. The study analyzes if different residence halls reduce electricity consumption by different amounts during the competition period. Results indicate that only 4 of 22 residence halls reduced electricity usage during competition periods in a statistically significant manner. The study concludes that the electricity competition at Colby College is …

Publications and Research

Following the launch of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory, two advanced high resolution multi-satellite precipitation products namely, Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) version 6 are released. A critical evaluation of these newly released precipitation data sets is very important for both the end users and data developers. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of IMERG research product and GSMaP estimates over India at a daily scale for the southwest monsoon season (June to September 2014). The GPM-based precipitation products are inter-compared with widely used TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), and …

In Equations We Trust? Formula Learning Effects On The Exponential Growth Bias, Bryan Foltice, Thomas Langer Jan 2016

In Equations We Trust? Formula Learning Effects On The Exponential Growth Bias, Bryan Foltice, Thomas Langer

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

This paper evaluates the possible benefits and drawbacks of the formal formula learning of compound growth as it pertains to eliminating, or at least reducing, the exponential growth bias in various household savings and debt decisions. In our main experimental study, we determine if the ability to calculate the simple compound savings formula only assists in its direct area of application with an available calculator, or if this knowledge extends into similar exponentially-based savings and debt decisions when either a calculator is prohibited or when the formula is unknown. In the process of tackling this research question, we develop a …

Toward Improving The Learning Process, Alexander T. Wells Jan 2016

Toward Improving The Learning Process, Alexander T. Wells

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Brilliant, motivated students are fun to teach. They love to work, want more of it, and sometimes even overwhelm you with their enthusiasm for learning. But today's classes are not overcrowded with such paragons. Often unmotivated or distracted students, who don't learn even when we are at our scintillating best, sit in our classes. Professors may exhort them to try harder, but if exhortation fails, what can lead to success?

Towards Teaching Effectiveness Assessing Student Performance, Francis Herlehy, Harold E. Gray Jan 2016

Towards Teaching Effectiveness Assessing Student Performance, Francis Herlehy, Harold E. Gray

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Evaluation is a process that is used to measure the depth and breadth of specific knowledge and skills. It is used while the instructional process is taking place to indicate a degree of movement towards a desired performance. It is also used to indicate a level of achievement or degree of competence after the instructional process has taken place. Further, and most relevant to this presentation, is that it gives faculty an indication of the efficacy of their teaching methods.

The intended purpose of the author was to review the literature on how it is that adults learn and how …

Using One-Minute Papers For Immediate Feedback Of Student Comprehension Of Mathematics In The Classroom, Loren L. Vian

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

A problem in teaching is the assessment of the students comprehension. The earlier the problem areas can be identified, the easier it is to correct the problems and to proceed on to new concepts successfully. The One-Minute paper technique can be used to evaluate the students understanding of the concepts and their ability to apply them. This quick and easy process allows the instructor to alter teaching methods at the earliest possible moment.

Using The Teaching Goals Inventory (Tgi) To Improve Teaching Effectivness, Steven N. Ulosevich

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

The national debate about education, which escalated in 1983 with the publication of A Nation at Risk by the National Commission on Excellence in Education, continues with a reexamination into the teaching and learning processes employed at all levels of education in the United States. A Nation at Risk cited the quality of teaching and learning as the primary issue of concern regarding education. Quality remains the major educational issue and warrants answers to two fundamental questions: (1) How effectively are teachers teaching? and (2) How well are students (a) learning? and (b) able to perform in higher education institutions, …

The Dual Regulatory Role Of Amino Acids Leu480 And Gln481 Of Prothrombin, Joesph R. Wiencek, Jamila Hirbawi, Vivien C. Yee, Michael Kalafatis Jan 2016

The Dual Regulatory Role Of Amino Acids Leu480 And Gln481 Of Prothrombin, Joesph R. Wiencek, Jamila Hirbawi, Vivien C. Yee, Michael Kalafatis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Prothrombin (FII) is activated to α-thrombin (IIa) by prothrombinase. Prothrombinase is composed of a catalytic subunit, factor Xa (fXa), and a regulatory subunit, factor Va (fVa), assembled on a membrane surface in the presence of divalent metal ions. We constructed, expressed, and purified several mutated recombinant FII (rFII) molecules within the previously determined fVa-dependent binding site for fXa (amino acid region 473–487 of FII). rFII molecules bearing overlapping deletions within this significant region first established the minimal stretch of amino acids required for the fVa-dependent recognition exosite for fXa in prothrombinase within the amino acid sequence Ser478–Val479 …

The Spectroscopic Orbits Of Five Γ Doradus Stars, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Dimitri Pourbaix

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have determined the spectroscopic orbits of five γ Dor variables, HD 776, HD 6568, HD 17310, HD 19684, and HD 62196. Their orbital periods range from 27.8 to 1163 days and their eccentricities from 0.01 to 0.65. Of the five systems, only HD 19684 shows lines of its binary companion, but those lines are always so weak and blended with the lines of the primary that we were unable to measure them satisfactorily. The velocity residuals of the orbital fits were searched for periodicities associated with pulsation. No clear, convincing case for velocity periodicities in the residuals was found …

Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is a high density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated protein with atherosclerosis-protective and systemic anti-oxidant functions. We recently showed that PON1, myeloperoxidase, and HDL bind to one another in vivo forming a functional ternary complex (Huang, Y., Wu, Z., Riwanto, M., Gao, S., Levison, B. S., Gu, X., Fu, X., Wagner, M. A., Besler, C., Gerstenecker, G., Zhang, R., Li, X. M., Didonato, A. J., Gogonea, V., Tang, W. H., et al. (2013) J. Clin. Invest. 123, 3815–3828). However, specific residues on PON1 involved in the HDL-PON1 interaction remain unclear. Unambiguous identification of protein residues involved in docking interactions to …

Scaling Law For Electrocaloric Temperature Change In Antiferroelectrics, Sergey Lisenkov, B. K. Mani, E. Glazkova, C. W. Miller, Inna Ponomareva Jan 2016

Scaling Law For Electrocaloric Temperature Change In Antiferroelectrics, Sergey Lisenkov, B. K. Mani, E. Glazkova, C. W. Miller, Inna Ponomareva

Physics Faculty Publications

A combination of theoretical and first-principles computational methods, along with experimental evidence from the literature, were used to predict the existence of a scaling law for the electrocaloric temperature change in antiferroelectric materials. We show that the temperature change scales quadratically with electric field, allowing a simple transformation to collapse the set of ΔT(E) onto a single curve. This offers a unique method that can be used to predict electrocaloric behavior beyond the limits of present measurement ranges or in regions where data are not yet available.

Application Of Combinatorial Structures In Wireless Communication., Samiran Bag Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Wireless communication has a compelling need in today’s world. This need is driven by the sudden surge in the demand of ad-hoc networks like wireless sensor networks. These networks consist of many isolated devices called nodes that use the wireless medium for communication. There are three security notions attached to any wireless communication. These are data confidentiality, data integrity and data availability. Cryptographic protocols are required for achieving the first two notions which in turn require shared secret keys. The last notion viz. data availability mainly deals with protecting the data from ‘denial of service attack’.In this thesis, we apply …

Ehugs: Enhanced Hierarchical Unbiased Graph Shrinkage For Efficient Groupwise Registration, Guorong Wu, Xuewei Peng, Shihui Ying, Qian Wang, Pew-Thian Yap, Dan Shen, Dinggang Shen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Effective and efficient spatial normalization of a large population of brain images is critical for many clinical and research studies, but it is technically very challenging. A commonly used approach is to choose a certain image as the template and then align all other images in the population to this template by applying pairwise registration. To avoid the potential bias induced by the inappropriate template selection, groupwise registration methods have been proposed to simultaneously register all images to a latent common space. However, current groupwise registration methods do not make full use of image distribution information for more accurate registration. …

Utilizing High Resolution Bus Gps Data To Visualize And Identify Congestion Hot-Spots In Urban Arterials, Nicholas B. Stoll Jan 2016

Utilizing High Resolution Bus Gps Data To Visualize And Identify Congestion Hot-Spots In Urban Arterials, Nicholas B. Stoll

PSU Transportation Seminars

The research uses high resolution bus data to examine sources of delay on urban arterials. A set of tools were created to help visualize trends in bus behavior and movement, which allowed for larger traffic trends to be visualized along urban corridors and urban streets. By using buses as probes and examining aggregated bus behavior, contoured speed plots were used to understand the behavior of roadways outside the zone of influence of bus stops. These speed plots can be utilized to discover trends and travel patterns with only a few days’ worth of data. Congestion and speed variation can be …

Segmentation Of Planar Surfaces From Laser Scanning Data Using The Magnitude Of Normal Position Vector For Adaptive Neighborhoods, Changjae Kim, Ayman Habib, Muwook Pyeon, Goo-Rak Kwon, Jaehoon Jung, Joon Heo Jan 2016

Segmentation Of Planar Surfaces From Laser Scanning Data Using The Magnitude Of Normal Position Vector For Adaptive Neighborhoods, Changjae Kim, Ayman Habib, Muwook Pyeon, Goo-Rak Kwon, Jaehoon Jung, Joon Heo

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Diverse approaches to laser point segmentation have been proposed since the emergence of the laser scanning system. Most of these segmentation techniques, however, suffer from limitations such as sensitivity to the choice of seed points, lack of consideration of the spatial relationships among points, and inefficient performance. In an effort to overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes a segmentation methodology that: (1) reduces the dimensions of the attribute space; (2) considers the attribute similarity and the proximity of the laser point simultaneously; and (3) works well with both airborne and terrestrial laser scanning data. A neighborhood definition based on the …

Abstraction And Epistemic Economy, Marco Panza Jan 2016

Abstraction And Epistemic Economy, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

Most of the arguments usually appealed to in order to support the view that some abstraction principles are analytic depend on ascribing to them some sort of existential parsimony or ontological neutrality, whereas the opposite arguments, aiming to deny this view, contend this ascription. As a result, other virtues that these principles might have are often overlooked. Among them, there is an epistemic virtue which I take these principles to have, when regarded in the appropriate settings, and which I suggest to call ‘epistemic economy’. My purpose is to isolate and clarify this notion by appealing to some examples concerning …

Particle Diffusion In Active Fluids Is Non-Monotonic In Size, Alison E. Patteson, Arvind Gopinath, Prashant K. Purohit, Paulo E. Arratia

Physics - All Scholarship

We experimentally investigate the effect of particle size on the motion of passive polystyrene spheres in suspensions of Escherichia coli. Using particles covering a range of sizes from 0.6 to 39 microns, we probe particle dynamics at both short and long time scales. In all cases, the particles exhibit super-diffusive ballistic behavior at short times before eventually transitioning to diffusive behavior. Surprisingly, we find a regime in which larger particles can diffuse faster than smaller particles: the particle long-time effective diffusivity exhibits a peak in particle size, which is a deviation from classical thermal diffusion. We also find that …
