Quantile Regression Analyses Of The Component Skills In Various Comprehension Tests, Anh Ngoc Hua Jan 2016

Quantile Regression Analyses Of The Component Skills In Various Comprehension Tests, Anh Ngoc Hua

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many studies to date have examined cognitive factors that drive individual differences in reading comprehension. However, these studies often focused on typical readers, and it is not clear whether their findings apply similarly to readers performing in the extreme ends of the distribution, i.e., poor and good readers. In this dissertation, we used quantile regression on a sample of 834 children (age 8-18) to advance our understanding of the relative importance of different component processes of comprehension not just for the typical but also for poor and skilled readers. In Study 1, we examined how the relative importance of components …

The Spatial Distribution Of Terrestrial Stable Carbon Isotopes In North America, And The Impacts Of Spatial And Temporal Resolution On Static Ecological Models, Sydney M. Firmin Jan 2016

The Spatial Distribution Of Terrestrial Stable Carbon Isotopes In North America, And The Impacts Of Spatial And Temporal Resolution On Static Ecological Models, Sydney M. Firmin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to the unique spatial and temporal characteristics of ecological phenomena, the extent and grain size of spatial data sets essentially filter the observations. This thesis examines the impacts of temporal and spatial resolution on the modeling of terrestrial stable carbon isotopic landscapes (isoscapes). I model the distribution of leaf stable carbon isotope composition (delta13C) for the continent of North America at multiple temporal and spatial resolutions. I generate each delta13C isoscape variation by first predicting the relative abundance of C3/C4 vegetation cover using monthly climate grids, crop distribution/type grids, and remote sensing data of plant …

Power Grid Management In Response To Extreme Events, Rozhin Eskandarpour Jan 2016

Power Grid Management In Response To Extreme Events, Rozhin Eskandarpour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Power system management in response to extreme events is one the most important operational aspects of power systems. In this thesis, a novel Event-driven Security Constrained Unit Commitment (E-SCUC) model and a statistical method, based on regression and data mining to estimate the system components outages, are proposed. The proposed models help consider the simultaneous outage of several system components represented by an N-1-m reliability criterion and accordingly determine the proper system response. In addition, an optimal microgrid placement model with the objective of minimizing the cost of unserved energy to enhance power system resilience is proposed.

Surviving And Thriving: The First-Year Transition Experiences Of Chinese Undergraduate Students In The United States, Kerrie Anne Montgomery Jan 2016

Surviving And Thriving: The First-Year Transition Experiences Of Chinese Undergraduate Students In The United States, Kerrie Anne Montgomery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number of international students pursuing degrees at U.S. institutions at the undergraduate level surpassed those at the graduate level for the first time in 2013. Additionally, the majority of international students coming to the U.S. are from China. This phenomenological study used a conceptual framework of Schlossberg's Transition Model (1995) and the Culturally Engaging Campus Environments Model (Museus, 2014) to analyze the experiences of Chinese undergraduate students in their first year of college in the United States. Three transition types were identified - academic, social/personal, and linguistic - and the students' preparation, sources of institutional support, and coping strategies …

Best-Subset Selection Criteria For Multiple Linear Regression, Gordon P. Brooks, Porsche Ruengvirayudh Jan 2016

Best-Subset Selection Criteria For Multiple Linear Regression, Gordon P. Brooks, Porsche Ruengvirayudh

Grant Evaluation & Statistical Support

This study presents comparisons of subset selection criteria used to help determine the "best" regression model in multiple linear regression. No such criteria can replace a researcher's knowledge of theory to help choose useful models, but such criteria may help in exploratory research. Relationships among variables can be more complicated than expected and may require adjustment to theory based on empirical models. Knowing how well each subset selection method performs can be useful in such cases. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to compare a number of well-known criteria (e.g., AIC, BIC, PRESS, adjusted R2 ) to some less well-known …

African Clawed Toads’ Responses To Visual And Lateral Line Stimuli, Marko Milosavljevic, Kevin Goth Jan 2016

African Clawed Toads’ Responses To Visual And Lateral Line Stimuli, Marko Milosavljevic, Kevin Goth

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

The African Clawed Toad, Xenopus laevis, is an aquatic species commonly found throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Adults use vision to sense movements and lateral line to sense vibrations in the water. Here, we analyze the effectiveness of the toads' vision and lateral line systems individually and in combination. This study will help us understand how Xenopus utilizes sensory information to capture prey. We tested which sensory system elicits greater responses, how stimulus angle and distance affect the probability of a response, and if the toads respond equally to visual and lateral line stimuli. We found that a combination of both visual …

The Relationship Between Observed And Perceived Measures Of Balance Stability, Lrenzo Bianco, John Demarco, Sarah Gualtier

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

Introduction Injurious falls have risen significantly in the past decade, raising concerns about the efficacy of fall prevention programs. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between perceived and observed balance measures used in a falls prevention program. Methods Subjects (S) were 70 (F), 59 (F), and 73(M). They were taught the Rate of Perceived Stability (RPS), a perceived measure of balance intensity and completed the Berg Balance Test (Berg), Timed up and Go (TUG), and Activities Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC). The Berg and TUG are observed measures and the ABC is a perceived measure. Last, …

How Big Is A Cloud: A Statistical Analysis Of Cloud Size Distributions Derived From Large Eddy Simulations, Dorothy Pharis, Nicholas Barron Jan 2016

How Big Is A Cloud: A Statistical Analysis Of Cloud Size Distributions Derived From Large Eddy Simulations, Dorothy Pharis, Nicholas Barron

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

To accurately represent cumulous clouds in climate and weather models, it is important to understand how large clouds, in certain cloud fields, are. These fields can be described by a cloud size distribution (CSD), the number of clouds of a certain defined size. This study utilized data from a Large Eddy Simulation (LES), a high resolution numerical model describing the atmosphere, to explore what defines the cloud size distribution. First, we have developed a toolkit to illustrate the cloud size distribution by using the slope and deriving an estimate for the scale break. Second, we performed a statistical analysis of …

Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology

Gallic acid (GA), a polyphenol, is widely found in numerous fruits and vegetables, particularly in hickory nuts. In the present study, we found that gallic acid, a natural phenolic compound isolated from fruits and vegetables, had a more potent growth inhibitory effect on two ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR-3 and A2780/CP70, than the effect on a normal ovarian cell line, IOSE-364. These results demonstrated that GA selectively inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Gene expression was examined by ELISA and western blot analysis, and gene pathways were examined by luciferase assay. It was found that GA inhibited VEGF secretion and …

The Commensurability Myth In Antitrust, Rebecca H. Allensworth Jan 2016

The Commensurability Myth In Antitrust, Rebecca H. Allensworth

Vanderbilt Law Review

Modern antitrust law pursues a seemingly unitary goal: competition. In fact, competition-whether defined as a process or as a set of outcomes associated with competitive markets-is multifaceted. What are offered in antitrust cases as procompetitive and anticompetitive effects are typically qualitatively different, and trading them off is as much an exercise in judgment as mathematics. But despite the inevitability of value judgments in antitrust cases, courts have perpetuated a commensurability myth, claiming to evaluate "net" competitive effect as if the pros and cons of a restraint of trade are in the same unit of measure. The myth is attractive to …

Bc 1 Rate Of Change Activity Sheet Teacher Notes, Ruth Dover Jan 2016

Bc 1 Rate Of Change Activity Sheet Teacher Notes, Ruth Dover

A Simple Introduction to Rates

Before beginning this section of handouts, students will be introduced to a variety of vocabulary words often associated with calculus. These words will be used in an intuitive sense only and will not have been formally defined. Vocabulary should include graphical terms such as continuous, increasing, decreasing, maximum and minimum points, concave up, concave down, and point of inflection. In addition, discussion of the concept of "rate of change" should begin. It should be mentioned that many quantities change – population, cost, and temperature, to name just a few. All that is specifically required at this point can be related …

A Revision Of Megalocraerus Lewis, 1902 (Coleoptera, Histeridae: Exosternini), Michael S. Caterino, Alexey K. Tishechkin

Publications

The formely monotypic Neotropical genus Megalocraerus Lewis is revised to include five species, known from southeastern Brazil to Costa Rica: M. rubricatus Lewis, M. mandibularis sp. n., M. chico sp. n., M. madrededios sp. n., and M. tiputini sp. n. We describe the species, map their distributions, and provide a key for their identification. Their subcylindrical body form and emarginate mesosternum have previously hindered placement to tribe, although their curent assignment to Exosternini now appears well supported by morphological evidence. Nothing is known of the natural history of the species.

A Multi-Objective, Hub-And-Spoke Model To Design And Manage Biofuel Supply Chains, Mohammad S. Roni, Sandra D. Eksioglu, Kara G. Cafferty, Jacob J. Jacobson

Publications

In this paper we propose a multi-objective, mixed integer linear programming model to design and manage the supply chain for biofuels. This model captures the trade-offs that exist between costs, environmental and social impacts of delivering biofuels. The in-bound supply chain for biofuel plants relies on a hub-and-spoke structure which optimizes transportation costs of biomass. The model proposed optimizes the CO2" style="position: relative;" tabindex="0" id="MathJax-Element-1-Frame">CO2 emissions due to transportation-related activities in the supply chain. The model also optimizes the social impact of biofuels. The social impacts are evaluated by the number of jobs created. The multi-objective optimization model is …

Optimization Models To Integrate Production And Transportation Planning For Biomass Co-Firing In Coal-Fired Power Plants, Sandra D. Eksioglu, Hadi Karimi, Burak Eksioglu

Publications

Co-firing biomass is a strategy that leads to reduced greenhouse gas emissions in coal-fired power plants. Incentives such as production tax credit (PTC) are designed to help power plants overcome the financial challenges faced during the implementation phase. Decision makers at power plants face two big challenges. The first challenge is identifying whether the benefits from incentives such as PTC can overcome the costs associated with co-firing. The second challenge is identifying the extent to which a plant should co-fire in order to maximize profits. We present a novel mathematical model that integrates production and transportation decisions at power plants. …

Teaching: Natural Or Cultural?, David F. Lancy Jan 2016

Teaching: Natural Or Cultural?, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

An important part of the common lore of anthropology is that “other people have culture.” That is, most people fail to recognize or appreciate how much of their lives are governed by habits, values, and expectations that are largely the product of history and culture. They fail to acknowledge that their own way of doing things is not necessarily universal or even widely shared. This ethnocentrism can have enormous consequences for the construction of child development theory and education.

Radio/Television/Sound: Radio Aesthetics And Perceptual Technics In Early American Television, Luke Stadel Jan 2016

Radio/Television/Sound: Radio Aesthetics And Perceptual Technics In Early American Television, Luke Stadel

The Journal of e-Media Studies

Media theorists and historians have long posited a genealogical connection between radio and television, with the idea of television as “radio with images” a common trope in scholarly understandings of the relationship between the two. Although recent scholarship has produced a more sufficiently historical understanding of the industrial, cultural, and technological connections between radio and television in the American context, the way radio influenced the development of sound norms for television remains largely unclear. Rather than assuming that television simply illustrated the silent genres of radio, adding image to an otherwise blind medium, this article uses the model of perceptual …

What's In A Name? A Critical Review Of Definitions Of Quantitative Literacy, Numeracy, And Quantitative Reasoning, Gizem Karaali, Edwin H Villafane Hernandez '18, Jeremy Alexander Taylor '18

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

This article aims to bring together various threads in the eclectic literature that make up the scholarship around the theme of Quantitative Literacy. In investigating the meanings of terms like "quantitative literacy," "quantitative reasoning," and "numeracy," we seek common ground, common themes, common goals and aspirations of a community of practitioners. A decade ago, these terms were relatively new in the public sphere; today policy makers and accrediting agencies are routinely inserting them into general education conversations. Having good, representative, and perhaps even compact and easily digestible definitions of these terms might come in handy in public relations contexts as …
