A time series of high-resolution spectra was observed in the optical wavelength region for the bright proto-planetary nebula IRAS 22272+5435 (HD 235858), along with a simultaneous monitoring of its radial velocity and BV R C magnitudes. The object is known to vary in light, color, and velocity owing to pulsation with a period of 132 days. The light and color variations are accompanied by significant changes in spectral features, most of which are identified as lines of carbon-bearing molecules. According to the observations, the C 2 Swan system and CN Red system lines are stronger near the light minimum. A …

Intentional Process For Intentional Space: Higher Education Classroom Spaces For Learning, Taimi Olsen, Stanley Guffey Jan 2016

Intentional Process For Intentional Space: Higher Education Classroom Spaces For Learning, Taimi Olsen, Stanley Guffey

Publications

This chapter addresses the confluence of theory and practice in developing and using “flexible” classrooms for student learning. A large classroom building renovation will be described, in terms of how collaboration and co-creation of value led to early success of the renovated space. Co-creation of value for staff and faculty can help overcome initial resistance to change, bridge understanding, and drive a successful change from lecture-based teaching to growing use of active learning pedagogies. At the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, co-creation was central to planning, conducting, and sustaining a renovation of space into flexible, technology-enhanced classrooms and changing classroom pedagogy.

Publications

This case study described teachers with varying technology skills who were implementing the use of geospatial technology (GST) within project-based instruction (PBI) at varying grade levels and contexts 1 to 2 years following professional development. The sample consisted of 10 fifth- to ninth-grade teachers. Data sources included artifacts, observations, interviews, and a GST performance assessment and were analyzed using a constant comparative approach. Teachers’ teaching actions, beliefs, context, and technology skills were categorized. Results indicated that all of the teachers had high beliefs, but their context and level of technology skills strongly influenced their teaching actions. Two types of teachers …

Climp: Clustering Motifs Via Maximal Cliques With Parallel Computing Design., Shaoqiang Zhang, Yong Chen Jan 2016

Climp: Clustering Motifs Via Maximal Cliques With Parallel Computing Design., Shaoqiang Zhang, Yong Chen

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

A set of conserved binding sites recognized by a transcription factor is called a motif, which can be found by many applications of comparative genomics for identifying over-represented segments. Moreover, when numerous putative motifs are predicted from a collection of genome-wide data, their similarity data can be represented as a large graph, where these motifs are connected to one another. However, an efficient clustering algorithm is desired for clustering the motifs that belong to the same groups and separating the motifs that belong to different groups, or even deleting an amount of spurious ones. In this work, a new motif …

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

Virginia is facing significant challenges related to public education such as decreased funding for public education, decreased teacher salaries, and overcrowded classrooms. Senate Joint Resolution 6 was a bill proposed in 2016 that sought to grant the Board of Education authority, subject to criteria and conditions prescribed by the General Assembly, to establish charter schools within the school divisions of the Commonwealth. There are racial implications related to the creation and authorization of charter schools and this report details those impacts and creates a set of recommendations to eliminate racial implementations when determining who authorizes charter schools in the Commonwealth …

Research & Publications

The commitment of differentiating cells to a specialized fate is fundamental to the correct assembly of tissues within a multicellular organism. Because commitment is often irreversible, entry into and progression through this phase of development must be tightly regulated. Under nitrogen-limiting conditions, the multicellular cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 terminally commits ∼10% of its cells to become specialized nitrogen-fixing heterocysts. Although commitment is known to occur 9–14 h after the induction of differentiation, the factors that regulate the initiation and duration of this phase have yet to be elucidated. Here, we report the identification of four genes that share …

Super-Resolution Reconstruction Of Mri, Sara Gharabaghi, Thomas Wischgoll, Nasser H. Kashou Jan 2016

Super-Resolution Reconstruction Of Mri, Sara Gharabaghi, Thomas Wischgoll, Nasser H. Kashou

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive technique that is used in clinical applications such as diseases diagnosis and monitoring and treatment progress. Although, MRI scans typically have high in-plane resolution but they have very poor resolution in slice direction. Furthermore, in some applications with limited acquisition time or where the subject is moving, increased slice thickness or inter-slice space (slice gaps) may be used which results in poor resolution MRI.

In this research, we propose a novel Super Resolution (SR) technique for reconstructing High-Resolution (HR) MRI using a sequence of orthogonal Low-Resolution (LR) MRI scans.

The resolution of this …

Arithmagons And Geometrically Invariant Multiplicative Integer Partitions, J. A. Franco, J. Champion, J. W. Lyons

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, we introduce a formal definition for integral arithmagons. Informally, an arithmagon is a polygonal figure with integer labeled vertices and edges in which, under a binary operation, adjacent vertices equal the included edge. By considering the group of automorphisms for the associated graph, we count the number of integral arithmagons whose exterior sum or product equals a fixed number.

Computing With Functions In Spherical And Polar Geometries I. The Sphere, Alex Townsend, Heather Wilber, Grady B. Wright Jan 2016

Computing With Functions In Spherical And Polar Geometries I. The Sphere, Alex Townsend, Heather Wilber, Grady B. Wright

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A collection of algorithms is described for numerically computing with smooth functions defined on the unit sphere. Functions are approximated to essentially machine precision by using a structure-preserving iterative variant of Gaussian elimination together with the double Fourier sphere method. We show that this procedure allows for stable differentiation, reduces the oversampling of functions near the poles, and converges for certain analytic functions. Operations such as function evaluation, differentiation, and integration are particularly efficient and can be computed by essentially one-dimensional algorithms. A highlight is an optimal complexity direct solver for Poisson's equation on the sphere using a spectral method. …

Uncertainty-Awareness In Open Source Visualization Solutions, Christina Gillmann, Thomas Wischgoll, Hans Hagen

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The popularity of open source tools is constantly increasing, as they offer the possibility to quickly create and use visualizations of arbitrary data sources. As the positive effects of uncertainty communication to all kinds of visualizations were discussed over the past years in the academic world, this work examines the uncertaintyawareness of open source solutions. Through a categorization and classification of available tools, this paper identifies the problems in uncertainty-awareness of available open source solutions. To solve this problem, a new paradigm of data handling that extends raw datasets by its uncertainty is suggested

A Dielasma Community From The Triassic Of Makhtesh Ramon, Southern Israel, Howard R. Feldman, Alexa J. Belowich

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research

The cosmopolitan brachiopod Dielasma ranges from the Upper Mississippian through the Upper Triassic. In southern Israel a new Dielasma community is recognized from the Triassic Saharonim Formation, Ramon Crater. The shells represent a new species and are very strongly sulciplicated, a feature that seems to be more prevalent in the Mesozoic than the Paleozoic. The Saharonim Formation was deposited under normal, calm, relatively shallow marine conditions as part of the global transgression of the Early Ladinian sea. There is no evidence of evaporitic or dolomitic sediments. The complete absence of scouring within the carbonates or signs of channeling and ripple …

Teachers’ Perceptions About Math Snacks Spanish Materials, Sara Morales, Lida J. Uribe-Flórez, Karen Trujillo, Karin Wiburg Jan 2016

Teachers’ Perceptions About Math Snacks Spanish Materials, Sara Morales, Lida J. Uribe-Flórez, Karen Trujillo, Karin Wiburg

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mathematics has been a gatekeeper especially for diverse students (Martin, Gholson & Leonard, 2010). The implications of an increasingly diverse school population calls for the development of culturally and linguistically responsive materials, including support materials for mathematics in Spanish. Teachers of mathematics in the United States have limited resources available to them in Spanish to support bridging mathematics content and practices for English Learners (Moschkovich, 2013). The CCSS-M requires deep conceptual understanding in order for students to be successful in their formal K-12 education. Students, whose home language is other than English, need support and opportunities to success in mathematics …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Use of synthetic fibers as reinforcement to stabilize expansive soils is gaining momentum. As a contribution towards this growing field of research two different types of synthetic fibers, Fiber Mesh® and Fiber Cast®, were evaluated as a stabilization alternative for expansive soils in the presence of lime. California Bearing Ratio (CBR) is chosen as a performance indicator as it is a good pointer towards pavement effectiveness. Variables such as length and amount of the fibers as well as curing period were studied. Both deterministic and probabilistic (or reliability) analysis is presented in this paper. While the deterministic analysis helps in …

Promoting Metacognitive Reflection In Music Theory Instruction, Anna Ferenc Jan 2016

Promoting Metacognitive Reflection In Music Theory Instruction, Anna Ferenc

Music Faculty Publications

Since 1976 when John Flavell coined the term metacognition, a significant body of literature has emerged in psychology and education research documenting the importance of it to the process of learning and advocating its development through reflection to promote deeper, more thoughtful, and self-regulated learning. In the domain of music, discussions of reflection and/or metacognition appear particularly in literature on teacher training, music teaching at primary and secondary levels, and performance, but these topics are hardly addressed in research on music theory pedagogy. This article begins to redress this situation. It presents a theoretical overview of metacognition and reflection, describes …

Knowledge Driven Search Intent Mining, Ashutosh Jadhav Jan 2016

Knowledge Driven Search Intent Mining, Ashutosh Jadhav

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Understanding users' latent intents behind search queries is essential for satisfying a user's search needs. Search intent mining can help search engines to enhance its ranking of search results, enabling new search features like instant answers, personalization, search result diversification, and the recommendation of more relevant ads. Hence, there has been increasing attention on studying how to effectively mine search intents by analyzing search engine query logs. While state-of-the-art techniques can identify the domain of the queries (e.g. sports, movies, health), identifying domain-specific intent is still an open problem. Among all the topics available on the Internet, health is one …

Tunable C Band Coupled-C Bpf With Resonators Using Active Capacitor And Inductor, Yu Wang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a classic second-order coupled-capacitor Chebyshev bandpass filter with resonators using active capacitor and inductor is presented. The low cost and small size of CMOS active components makes the band pass filter (BPF) attractive in fully-integrated CMOS applications. The active capacitor is designed to compensate active inductor's resistance for resistive match in the resonator. Meanwhile, adjusting design parameter of the active component provides BPF tunability in center frequency, pass band and pass band gain. Designed in 1.8V 180 nanometer CMOS process, the BPF has a tuning frequency range of 758-864 MHz, a controllable pass band of 7.1-65.9 MHz, …

Density Functional Investigation Of The Inclusion Of Gold Clusters On A Ch3s Self-Assembled Lattice On Au(111), Darnel J. Allen, Wayne E. Archibald, John A. Harper, John C. Saputo, Daniel Torres Jan 2016

Density Functional Investigation Of The Inclusion Of Gold Clusters On A Ch3s Self-Assembled Lattice On Au(111), Darnel J. Allen, Wayne E. Archibald, John A. Harper, John C. Saputo, Daniel Torres

Publications and Research

We employ first-principles density functional theoretical calculations to address the inclusion of gold (Au) clusters in a well-packed CH3S self-assembled lattice. We compute CH3S adsorption energies to quantify the energetic stability of the self-assembly and gold adsorption and dissolution energies to characterize the structural stability of a series of Au clusters adsorbed at the SAM-Au interface. Our results indicate that the inclusion of Au clusters with less than four Au atoms in the SAM-Au interface enhances the binding of CH3S species. In contrast, larger Au clusters destabilize the self-assembly.We attribute this effect to the low-coordinated gold atoms in the cluster. …
