Surficial Geology And Provenance Of Glacial Deposits Of The Saybrook 7.5 Minute Quadrangle, Mclean County, Illinois, Ellyn S. Rickels Jan 2016

Surficial Geology And Provenance Of Glacial Deposits Of The Saybrook 7.5 Minute Quadrangle, Mclean County, Illinois, Ellyn S. Rickels

Theses and Dissertations

The glaciated landscape of much of Illinois is a product of the most recent glacial episode, which is characterized by a series of end moraines composed predominantly of till and deposited by ice flowing into Illinois from the east and northeast around 20,000 years before present time. Two separate projects were completed as part of this thesis to better understand the surficial geology and the source areas of glacial sediment in central Illinois: the creation of a surficial geologic map of the Saybrook 7.5 Minute Quadrangle and a provenance study of granitic clasts from two moraines in the area.

Online Novelty Detection System: One-Class Classification Of Systemic Operation, Ryan M. Bowen Jan 2016

Online Novelty Detection System: One-Class Classification Of Systemic Operation, Ryan M. Bowen

Theses

Presented is an Online Novelty Detection System (ONDS) that uses Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) and one-class classification techniques to identify novel information from multivariate times-series data. Multiple data preprocessing methods are explored and features vectors formed from frequency components obtained by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Welch's method of estimating Power Spectral Density (PSD). The number of features are reduced by using bandpower schemes and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm is used to learn parameters for GMMs on feature vectors collected from only normal operational conditions. One-class classification is achieved by thresholding likelihood values relative …

The research contained in this paper focuses on the religion of Jainism, its main principle of ahimsa, or nonviolence, and how that philosophy has evolved over the years, eventually inspiring today’s nonviolent movements. First, a look will be taken at the origin of Jainism, with a brief explanation of its most important principles and beliefs. Then, ahimsa is explained as it has been traditionally perceived by Jains. The recent evolution of the meaning of ahimsa and its impact on modern nonviolence movements is discussed, with a focus on the influence of second-generation Jains in the United States on the …

How Much A Quarter Cost: Allegory Of A Coin And Other Stories, Grant C. Gallo Jan 2016

How Much A Quarter Cost: Allegory Of A Coin And Other Stories, Grant C. Gallo

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

The philosophical theories of Baruch Spinoza and George Berkley were described, compared, and contrasted. Various examples and metaphors were used to help fully illustrate their respective metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical positions. The relevance of their theories to current philosophical discourse was discussed; showing that even in today’s technologically advanced society, seemingly antiquated ideas may still provide useful knowledge. In the end, Spinoza and Berkley’s apparently conflicting paradigms are rectified through a multiplexual, relativistic lens.

Ancient Animal Ethics: The Earliest Arguments For The Ethical Consideration Of Nonhuman Animals, Joshua J. Sias Jan 2016

Ancient Animal Ethics: The Earliest Arguments For The Ethical Consideration Of Nonhuman Animals, Joshua J. Sias

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Primarily focused on the ancient Greek philosophers, this work offers a survey of the earliest arguments for and against the inclusion of nonhuman animals in human realms of ethical consideration. By following the trends of ancient western thought concerning animal ethics, the influencing factors behind the downfall of the subject in Medieval times, both in terms of discourse and practice, is discovered in the philosophical exchange that preceded medieval thought.

Limiting The Impact Of Destructive Analytical Techniques Through Sequential Microspatial Sampling Of The Enamel From Single Teeth, Alexis E. Dolphin, Mathew A. Teeter, Christine D. White, Fred J. Longstaffe Jan 2016

Limiting The Impact Of Destructive Analytical Techniques Through Sequential Microspatial Sampling Of The Enamel From Single Teeth, Alexis E. Dolphin, Mathew A. Teeter, Christine D. White, Fred J. Longstaffe

Earth Sciences Publications

A fundamental research concern within contemporary bioarchaeology is the sensitive balance between the preservation of human remains and the use of destructive techniques to collect information. Here we describe one example of how multiple microspatial destructive/semi-destructive techniques may be carried out in sequence using only the enamel of a single tooth. With careful planning of both sample preparation strategies and sequencing of sampling methods, it is possible to produce multiple datasets, and yet to retain material for future analyses.

In this case, enamel from the teeth of 27 individuals who lived during the early medieval period (AD 1170-1198) in Bergen, …

Equilibrium Fluctuations In A Metastable State Of A Ginzburg–Landau System, D.I. Uzunov, Alexander Umantsev Jan 2016

Equilibrium Fluctuations In A Metastable State Of A Ginzburg–Landau System, D.I. Uzunov, Alexander Umantsev

College of Health, Science, and Technology

We calculate thermal fluctuation properties – volume-averaged order parameter, Helmholtz free and internal energies, and their variances – of a supersaturated disordered phase in the Gibbs canonical ensemble for an asymmetric (third-order interactions), athermal (independence of the supersaturation and thermal noise) effective Hamiltonian. These properties are different from those of the symmetric thermal one with the most important differences being the phase coexistence and ‘thermal expansion’. The fluctuation properties of the system were calculated theoretically, using the perturbation method, and numerically, using the ‘brute force’ simulations method. Overall, the numerical calculations match the theory within the accuracy of the numerical …

Atypical Visual And Somatosensory Adaptation In Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders, Gizely Andrade, John Butler, Gregory Peter, Sophie Molholm, John J. Foxe Jan 2016

Atypical Visual And Somatosensory Adaptation In Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders, Gizely Andrade, John Butler, Gregory Peter, Sophie Molholm, John J. Foxe

Articles

Neurophysiological investigations in patients with schizophrenia consistently show early sensory processing deficits in the visual system. Importantly, comparable sensory deficits have also been established in healthy first-degree biological relatives of patients with schizophrenia and in first-episode drug-naive patients. The clear implication is that these measures are endophenotypic, related to the underlying genetic liability for schizophrenia. However, there is significant overlap between patient response distributions and those of healthy individuals without affected first-degree relatives. Here we sought to develop more sensitive measures of sensory dysfunction in this population, with an eye to establishing endophenotypic markers with better predictive capabilities. We used …

Formalizing And Verifying Stochastic System Architectures Using Monterey Phoenix, Songzheng Song, Jiexin Zhang, Yang Liu, Mikhail Auguston, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Tieming Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The analysis of software architecture plays an important role in understanding the system structures and facilitate proper implementation of user requirements. Despite its importance in the software engineering practice, the lack of formal description and verification support in this domain hinders the development of quality architectural models. To tackle this problem, in this work, we develop an approach for modeling and verifying software architectures specified using Monterey Phoenix (MP) architecture description language. MP is capable of modeling system and environment behaviors based on event traces, as well as supporting different architecture composition operations and views. First, we formalize the syntax …

Reactivity Measurement In Estimation Of Benzoquinone And Benzoquinone Derivatives’ Allergenicity, Wilbes Mbiya, Ita Chipinda, Reuben H. Simoyi, Paul D. Siegel

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Benzoquinone (BQ) and benzoquinone derivatives (BQD) are used in the production of dyes and cosmetics. While BQ, an extreme skin sensitizer, is an electrophile known to covalently modify proteins via Michael Addition (MA) reaction whilst halogen substituted BQD undergo nucleophilic vinylic substitution (SNV) mechanism onto amine and thiol moieties on proteins, the allergenic effects of adding substituents on BQ have not been reported. The effects of inserting substituents on the BQ ring has not been studied in animal assays. However, mandated reduction/elimination of animals used in cosmetics testing in Europe has led to an increased need for alternatives for the …

Improved Egt-Based Robustness Analysis Of Negotiation Strategies In Multiagent Systems Via Model Checking, Songzheng Song, Jianye Hao, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Ho-Fung Leung, Jie Zhang Jan 2016

Improved Egt-Based Robustness Analysis Of Negotiation Strategies In Multiagent Systems Via Model Checking, Songzheng Song, Jianye Hao, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Ho-Fung Leung, Jie Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automated negotiations play an important role in various domains modeled as multiagent systems, where agents represent human users and adopt different negotiation strategies. Generally, given a multiagent system, a negotiation strategy should be robust in the sense that most agents in the system have the incentive to choose it rather than other strategies. Empirical game-theoretic (EGT) analysis is a game-theoretic analysis approach to investigate the robustness of different strategies based on a set of empirical results. In this study, we propose that model-checking techniques can be adopted to improve EGT analysis for negotiation strategies. The dynamics of strategy profiles can …

Ocular Drift Along The Mental Number Line., A Myachykov, R Ellis, A Cangelosi, Mh Fischer

School of Psychology

We examined the spontaneous association between numbers and space by documenting attention deployment and the time course of associated spatial-numerical mapping with and without overt oculomotor responses. In Experiment 1, participants maintained central fixation while listening to number names. In Experiment 2, they made horizontal target-direct saccades following auditory number presentation. In both experiments, we continuously measured spontaneous ocular drift in horizontal space during and after number presentation. Experiment 2 also measured visual-probe-directed saccades following number presentation. Reliable ocular drift congruent with a horizontal mental number line emerged during and after number presentation in both experiments. Our results provide new …

Changes in pedagogy, classroom participation, and curriculum were infused into two college mathematics classes for preservice teachers and the attitudinal beliefs of these preservice teachers were assessed to measure change after a course intervention.

Approaching Questions Of Text Reuse In Ancient Greek Using Computational Syntactic Stylometry, Vanessa Gorman, Robert J. Gorman Jan 2016

Approaching Questions Of Text Reuse In Ancient Greek Using Computational Syntactic Stylometry, Vanessa Gorman, Robert J. Gorman

Department of History: Faculty Publications

We are investigating methods by which data from dependency syntax treebanks of ancient Greek can be applied to questions of authorship in ancient Greek historiography. From the Ancient Greek Dependency Treebank were constructed syntax words (sWords) by tracing the shortest path from each leaf node to the root for each sentence tree. This paper presents the results of a preliminary test of the usefulness of the sWord as a stylometric discriminator. The sWord data was subjected to clustering analysis. The resultant groupings were in accord with traditional classifications. The use of sWords also allows a more fine-grained heuristic exploration of …

Helping Students Crack Annuity, Perpetuity, Bond, And Stock Valuation Formulas, Chengping Zhang Jan 2016

Helping Students Crack Annuity, Perpetuity, Bond, And Stock Valuation Formulas, Chengping Zhang

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Mainstream finance textbooks present valuation formulas of annuities, perpetuities, stocks, and bonds, but the texts seldom explain the story behind them, leaving students in the dark about why these formulas work. The aim of this paper is to illuminate the black box of these formulas, thus helping finance instructors and students truly understand them. Starting from the basic valuation principle, we can reach each of these seemingly daunting formulas via a few simple algebraic steps. When students reach their “Ah-ha” moment at the end of each derivation, it motivates them and subsequently boosts their interest and confidence in learning Finance.

An Elementary Proof Of Dodgson's Condensation Method For Calculating Determinants, R. Corban Harwood, Mitch Main, Micah Donor Jan 2016

An Elementary Proof Of Dodgson's Condensation Method For Calculating Determinants, R. Corban Harwood, Mitch Main, Micah Donor

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

In 1866, Charles Ludwidge Dodgson published a paper concerning a method for evaluating determinants called the condensation method. His paper documented a new method to calculate determinants that was based on Jacobi's Theorem. The condensation method is presented and proven here, and is demonstrated by a series of examples. The condensation method can be applied to a number of situations, including calculating eigenvalues, solving a system of linear equations, and even determining the different energy levels of a molecular system. The method is much more efficient than cofactor expansions, particularly for large matrices; for a 5 x 5 matrix, the …
