Price Trends For Cloud Computing Services, Liang Zhang Jan 2016

Price Trends For Cloud Computing Services, Liang Zhang

Honors Thesis Collection

The landscape in the information technology (IT) sector is changing rapidly, and studying price trends for a newly developed IT services provides a great gateway to gauge these changes. Cloud computing—the on-demand delivery of computing resources and applications via the Internet—is rapidly expanding yet relatively little is know about trends in prices of cloud computing. For my senior economics thesis, I constructed quality-adjusted price indexes to quantify the rate of price change of Cloud Computing Services. I employ two hedonic regression methods as well as the matched model method and the results suggest that Cloud Computing Services experienced a sharp …

Beyond The Loom: Examining The Relationship Among Gender, Textiles, And Architecture At The Bauhaus, Orli Hakanoglu Jan 2016

Beyond The Loom: Examining The Relationship Among Gender, Textiles, And Architecture At The Bauhaus, Orli Hakanoglu

Honors Thesis Collection

Nearly 100 years ago, the Bauhaus, the German school of architecture, design, and art, opened its doors to its students. Known for its radical social and artistic experimentation, the design and theory that came from the school is still relevant today. The Bauhaus was founded during a critical moment of social change, one shaped by the horrors of the Great War, by Germany’s defeat, and by its economic and political restructuring. The Bauhaus promoted a spirit of equality through its curriculum and output. Yet, the agenda of equality did not reach so far as to eliminate the distinctions between women …

Determining Corresponding Artinian Rings To Zero-Divisor Graphs, Abigail Mary Jones Jan 2016

Determining Corresponding Artinian Rings To Zero-Divisor Graphs, Abigail Mary Jones

Honors Thesis Collection

We introduce Anderson's and Livingston's definition of a zero-divisor graph of a commutative ring. We then redefine their definition to include looped vertices, enabling us to visualize nilpotent elements. With this new definition, we examine the algebraic and graph theoretic properties of different types of Artinian rings, culminating in an algorithm that determines the corresponding Artinian rings to a zero-divisor graph. We also will explore and develop an algorithm for a specific case of Artinian rings, and we will conclude by examining the uniqueness of zero-divisor graphs.

Enumeration Of A[Lambda]-Ice Models And Strict Gelfand-Tsetlin Patterns, Nianqiao Ju Jan 2016

Enumeration Of A[Lambda]-Ice Models And Strict Gelfand-Tsetlin Patterns, Nianqiao Ju

Honors Thesis Collection

We want to generalize the alternating sign matrix conjecture. We identify the 1-to-1 correspondence between type $\mathcal{A}^{\lambda}$ ice models, whose boundary conditions are determined by integer partitions, and strict Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns. We use these connections to derive a recursive relationships on the enumeration of ice models determined by integer partitions.

A Cognitive Computational Approach To Understanding Theory Of Mind And Its Impairment In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Isabelle Rosenthal Jan 2016

A Cognitive Computational Approach To Understanding Theory Of Mind And Its Impairment In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Isabelle Rosenthal

Honors Thesis Collection

Theory of Mind (ToM), the mental ability to represent other people’s beliefs and intentions, remains a faculty that is poorly understood on a computational level. While a “mentalizing network” of implicated brain structures exists, the interaction of these structures and their specific functions still requires further study. Furthermore, although it is known that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) tend to exhibit impairments in ToM, the nature of these impairments is not known. In this thesis, ToM is investigated through a novel learning task which bears a similar structure to past ToM tasks, but requires participants to update their representations …

Generalizations Of Nil Clean To Ideals, Alexi T. Block Gorman Jan 2016

Generalizations Of Nil Clean To Ideals, Alexi T. Block Gorman

Honors Thesis Collection

The notion of a clean ring has many variations that have been widely studied, including the sub-class of nil clean rings. We develop new variations of this concept and discuss the interactions between these new properties and those in the established canon. The first property we define is an ideal-theoretic generalization of the element-wise defined property "nil clean," the condition that an element of a ring is the sum of a nilpotent and an idempotent. We establish a few characterizations for certain families of rings with this property, called ideally nil clean. In particular, a commutative ring is ideally nil …

In Defense Of A Contextualized Suppositional Account Of Conditional Credence, Xueyin Zhang Jan 2016

In Defense Of A Contextualized Suppositional Account Of Conditional Credence, Xueyin Zhang

Honors Thesis Collection

Conditional credence is an important concept in many areas of philosophy. However, little consensus has been achieved regarding its semantics and ontology. In this thesis I shall sketch a contextualist suppositional account of conditional credence by drawing insights from two seemingly disjoint debates: the foundational debate on the relationship between conditional and unconditional probabilities, and the semantic debate on the relationship between conditional probability and probabilities of conditionals. I argue that, for a given pair of propositions A and B, the conditional credence one ought to have for B given that A - P(B|A) - may depend on contextual parameters …

Tutor-Complete: An Educational Game And Intelligent Tutoring System For Languages And Automata, Katherine Kjeer Jan 2016

Tutor-Complete: An Educational Game And Intelligent Tutoring System For Languages And Automata, Katherine Kjeer

Honors Thesis Collection

Educational games and Intelligent Tutoring Systems have been shown to improve student learning outcomes by increasing engagement and providing individualized instruction. However, while introductory programming students frequently benefit from such systems, students in upper-level theoretical courses such as CS 235 (Languages and Automata) have dense textbooks and dry mathematical readings as their primary or only resources. Tutor-Complete aims to fill this gap by presenting two fundamental CS 235 concepts in a game environment. In the first activity, students construct Deterministic Finite-State Automata in order to guide their character across a landscape. In the second activity, students build proofs using the …

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Eutrophication and warming of lakes are occurring globally. Lake Baikal, a large ancient lake composed of three basins, has recently experienced benthic eutrophication at local sites and lake warming in the south basin. Here, we look for signals of warming and pelagic eutrophication across the entire lake using physical and biological data collected at a subset of 79 stations sampled ca. annually (1977–2003) during the period of summer stratification. Lake-wide, surface waters warmed 2.0 °C; and, consistent with this warming, the abundance of two warm-water, cosmopolitan zooplankton taxa increased between two (pelagic cladocerans) and 12-fold (Cyclops kolensis). C. kolensis increased …

Electron Diffraction Study Of Cobalt-Rich Hf-Co, Xingzhong Li, Yunlong Jin, Jeffrey E. Shield, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Intermetallic compounds having compositions from HfCo4 to HfCo8 were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. A major crystalline phase, closely related to the orthorhombic Zr2Co11 phase in structure, has been observed in the samples with the composition ranges from HfCo6 to HfCo8. The phase, referred to as either Hf2Co11 or HfCo7 phase in the literature, is actually one common phase, having a broad composition range and referred to as μ-phase in the present paper. In addition to the μ-phase, we …

An Automated Temporal, Amplitude, And Complexity-Based Comparison Of Commercial Plethysmographs, Matthew Mikhail Jan 2016

An Automated Temporal, Amplitude, And Complexity-Based Comparison Of Commercial Plethysmographs, Matthew Mikhail

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The study of plethysmographic physiology has been limited by a lack of standardized and open plethysmographic hardware in clinical use. Fundamental differences in the processing of output between various devices obfuscate direct comparison, and the role played by physiology versus that by technology in the final viewable plethysmogram (PPG). This study proposes a largely automated, unbiased method for quantitatively comparing the outputs from proprietary pulse oximeter devices along three metrics: temporal delay, amplification, and complexity. It then applies these methods to the deconstruction of Masimo and Nellcor pulse oximeters.

With IRB approval, twelve healthy, awake subjects were studied. Each individual …

Generalized Eulerian Numbers And Multiplex Juggling Sequences, Esther M. Banaian Jan 2016

Generalized Eulerian Numbers And Multiplex Juggling Sequences, Esther M. Banaian

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

We consider generalizations of both juggling sequences and non-attacking rook placements. We demonstrate the important connection between these objects, and also propose a generalization of the Eulerian numbers. These generalizations give rise to several interesting counting problems, which we explore.

On Coprimely Structured Rings, Nesli̇han Ayşen Özki̇ri̇şci̇, Kürşat Hakan Oral, Ünsal Teki̇r

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we define coprimely structured rings, which are the generalization of strongly 0-dimensional rings. Furthermore, we investigate coprimely structured rings and give some relations between other rings such as Artinian rings, strongly 0-dimensional rings, and h-local domains.

Almost Co-K\"{A}Hler Manifolds Satisfying Some Symmetry Conditions, Yaning Wang Jan 2016

Almost Co-K\"{A}Hler Manifolds Satisfying Some Symmetry Conditions, Yaning Wang

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $M^{2n+1}$ be an almost co-K\"{a}hler manifold of dimension $>3$ with K\"{a}hlerian leaves. In this paper, we first prove that if $M^{2n+1}$ is locally symmetric, then either it is a co-K\"{a}hler manifold with locally symmetric K\"{a}hlerian leaves, or the Reeb vector field $\xi$ is harmonic and in this case $M^{2n+1}$ is non-co-K\"{a}hler. We also prove that any almost co-K\"{a}hler manifold of dimension $3$ is $\phi$-symmetric if and only if it is locally isometric to either a flat Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$ or a Riemannian product $\mathbb{R}\times N^2(c)$, where $N^2(c)$ denotes a K\"{a}hler surface of constant curvature $c\neq0$.

Generalizability Of Predictive Performance Optimizer Predictions Across Learning Task Type, Haley Pace Wilson Jan 2016

Generalizability Of Predictive Performance Optimizer Predictions Across Learning Task Type, Haley Pace Wilson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of my study is to understand the relationship of learning and forgetting rates estimated by a cognitive model at the level of the individual and overall task performance across similar learning tasks. Cognitive computational models are formal representations of theories that enable better understanding and prediction of dynamic human behavior in complex environments (Adner, Polos, Ryall, & Sorenson, 2009). The Predictive Performance Optimizer (PPO) is a cognitive model and training aid based in learning theory that tracks quantitative performance data and also makes predictions for future performance. It does so by estimating learning and decay rates for specific …

Remedial Course Enrollments And Student Outcomes In Maine’S Public Higher Education Institutions, Amy F. Johnson Phd Jan 2016

Remedial Course Enrollments And Student Outcomes In Maine’S Public Higher Education Institutions, Amy F. Johnson Phd

Higher Education and College Readiness

College readiness remains a large policy challenge for both K-‐12 schools and higher education institutions. Students who need to pursue remedial coursework before being able to enroll in introductory college requirements face financial and logistical challenges that create barriers to degree progression. In an effort to gain additional information about the scale and context of the problem the University of Maine System and Maine Community College Systems were required to prepare four annual reports with information about the students entering their colleges directly from a Maine high school. These reports provided information on the overall proportion of these students who …
