How Well Do Doodle Polls Do?, Danya Alrawi, Barbara M. Anthony, Christine Chung Jan 2016

How Well Do Doodle Polls Do?, Danya Alrawi, Barbara M. Anthony, Christine Chung

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Web-based Doodle polls, where respondents indicate their availability for a collection of times provided by the poll initiator, are an increasingly common way of selecting a time for an event or meeting. Yet group dynamics can markedly influence an individual’s response, and thus the overall solution quality. Via theoretical worst-case analysis, we analyze certain common behaviors of Doodle poll respondents, including when participants are either more generous with or more protective of their time, showing that deviating from one’s “true availability” can have a substantial impact on the overall quality of the selected time. We show perhaps counter-intuitively that being …

Plunder On The High Seas, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy Jan 2016

Plunder On The High Seas, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

History of Cultural Contact

The word ‘piracy’ conjures infamous tales of adventures on the high sea. Often, piracy is associated with images of men screaming and ransacking ships, the look of unclean clothes and unhygienic skin, inherent violence and inherent treachery, the never-ending lust for riches - all the makings of uncivilized human beings. But the idea that all pirates fit this description is a misconception. Pirates tended to be more complex than that, and some even established special codes that denoted a social order and rules to be followed. In the Golden Age of pirates, from the 17th to 19th century, pirates ruled …

Effect Of Spalled Particles Thermal Degradation On A Hypersonic Flow Field Environment, Raghava S. C. Davuluri, Huaibao Zhang, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Two-way coupling is performed between a spallation code and a hypersonic aerothermodynamics CFD solver to evaluate the effect of spalled particles on the flow field. Time accurate solutions are computed in argon and air flow fields. A single particle simulations and multiple particles simulations are performed and studied. The results show that the carbon vapor released by spalled particles tend to change the composition of the flow field, particularly the upstream region of the shock.

Of Life And Limb: The Failure Of Florida's Water Quality Criteria To Test For Vibrio Vulnificus In Coastal Waters And The Need For Enhanced Criteria, Regulation, And Notification To Protect Public Health, Felicia Thomas

Student Works

The nefarious duo of warming oceans and rising sea levels has created a menacing yet lesser-known climate change-induced problem: an increase in sea-borne diseases. For most, the biggest concern when diving into the ocean is a possible, though exceedingly rare, shark encounter; however, it is the unexpected, unseen risk of Vibrio vulnificus that poses the greater danger. Part I of this paper discusses Vibrio vulnificus cases along the coasts of Florida, examining both the illnesses that were contracted through exposure of open wounds to seawater and those contracted through the consumption of raw oysters from the Gulf Coast. Part II …

Methane Emissions As Energy Reservoir: Context, Scope, Causes And Mitigation Strategies, Xiaoli Chai, David J. Tonjes, Devinder Mahajan Jan 2016

Methane Emissions As Energy Reservoir: Context, Scope, Causes And Mitigation Strategies, Xiaoli Chai, David J. Tonjes, Devinder Mahajan

Technology & Society Faculty Publications

Methane (CH4) is now considered a bridge fuel between present fossil (carbon) economy and desired renewables and this energy molecule is projected to play an important role in the global energy mix well beyond 2035. The atmospheric warming potential of CH4 is 28-36 times, when averaged over a 100-year period, that of carbon dioxide (CO2) and this necessitates a close scrutiny of global CH4 emissions inventory. As the second most abundant greenhouse gas (GHG), the annual global CH4 emissions were 645 million metric tons (MMT), accounting for 14.3% of the global anthropogenic GHG emissions. Of this, five key anthropogenic sources: …

Hobbes On Natural Philosophy As “True Physics” And Mixed Mathematics, Marcus P. Adams Jan 2016

Hobbes On Natural Philosophy As “True Physics” And Mixed Mathematics, Marcus P. Adams

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, I offer an alternative account of the relationship of Hobbesian geometry to natural philosophy by arguing that mixed mathematics provided Hobbes with a model for thinking about it. In mixed mathematics, one may borrow causal principles from one science and use them in another science without there being a deductive relationship between those two sciences. Natural philosophy for Hobbes is mixed because an explanation may combine observations from experience (the ‘that’) with causal principles from geometry (the ‘why’). My argument shows that Hobbesian natural philosophy relies upon suppositions that bodies plausibly behave according to these borrowed causal …

Toward The Resistant Reading Of Information: Google, Resistant Spectatorship, And Critical Information Literacy, Eamon Tewell Jan 2016

Toward The Resistant Reading Of Information: Google, Resistant Spectatorship, And Critical Information Literacy, Eamon Tewell

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

The theory of resistant spectatorship posits that individuals interacting with media and information may have the agency or power to oppose, reject, or reassemble the message they encounter instead of passively accepting it. This study puts resistant spectatorship in conversation with information literacy and critiques one example of a dominant information discovery system, Google Search, from a “resistant” position. Additionally, this study argues that, within academic libraries, the practice of critical information literacy, a pedagogical approach aligned with the concept of resistant spectatorship, is an ideal mode for encouraging students to become resistant readers of information in its increasingly corporate-mediated …

Stable Marriage Problem, Angelica Ventura Jan 2016

Stable Marriage Problem, Angelica Ventura

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

Every instance of the Stable Marriage Problem involves two finite sets of equal size. We can think of one of the sets as containing men and the other as containing women. Each person must rank the members of the opposite gender in their order of preference. The goal is then to create a set of man-woman couples with the following stability property: It is impossible to find a man and a woman who prefer each other over their respective partners in the set of couples. A set of couples having this property is called a stable matching. Such matchings can …

Applications Of Gr¨Obner Bases In Commutative Algebra And Algebraic Geometry, Christopher Guevara Jan 2016

Applications Of Gr¨Obner Bases In Commutative Algebra And Algebraic Geometry, Christopher Guevara

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

An ideal I in a polynomial ring k[x1, . . . ,xn] is a nonempty set which is closed under addition and satisfies hf ∈ I whenever h ∈ k[x1, . . . ,xn] and f ∈ I. We say that I is finitely generated if there exist f1, . . . , fs ∈ I such that every element of I is of the form h1f1+· · ·+hsfs for some h1, . . . ,hs ∈ k[x1, . . . ,xn]. By a fundamental result called the Hilbert Basis Theorem, every polynomial ideal is finitely generated. In fact, every …

The Application Of Big Data Analytics To Patent Litigation, Chloé Margulis Jan 2016

The Application Of Big Data Analytics To Patent Litigation, Chloé Margulis

Earth Stewardship And The Missio Dei: Participating In The Care And Redemption Of All God Has Made, David M. Carlson

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This explanatory sequential mixed methods research project surveyed leaders and conducted focus group interviews in an ELCA synod. It evaluated earthkeeping practices and perceptions using several lenses: sustainability, globalization, global civil society, nature as active subject, stewardship as participating in God’s mission, perichoresis as modeling reciprocal relationships with nature, eschatological themes of redemption and reformation, and sacramental imagination. Results revealed concern about environmental challenges, openness to earth stewardship, significant differences by political preference, and more pronounced personal than congregational practices. Congregations with creation care teams have promising capacity to exhibit earth stewardship’s missional character through personal, congregational, and community engagement.

Growing Pains: The Effect Of Common Core State Standards On Perceived Teacher Effectiveness, Audrey Figueroa Murphy, Bruce A. Torff Jan 2016

Growing Pains: The Effect Of Common Core State Standards On Perceived Teacher Effectiveness, Audrey Figueroa Murphy, Bruce A. Torff

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Survey research tested the hypothesis that teachers support less rigorous curriculum for English language learners (ELLs) than for general-education (GE) students. Participating teachers (n = 205) worked in urban schools with large populations of ELLs whose home language is Spanish. Eighty-seven were randomly assigned to respond about ELLs and 118 about GE students. Teachers rated descriptions of instructional activities that differed in demand for critical thinking (CT), a proxy for rigor of curriculum. In within-subjects analyses, teachers asked about ELLs rated low-CT activities over high-CT ones, but teachers asked about GE students produced no difference. In between-subjects analyses, teachers asked …
