Disentangling Language Differences From Disability: A Case Study Of District-Preservice Collaboration, Julie Esparza Brown, Phyllis Campbell Ault Feb 2016

Disentangling Language Differences From Disability: A Case Study Of District-Preservice Collaboration, Julie Esparza Brown, Phyllis Campbell Ault

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

Identifying which K-12 English Learners (ELs) should receive special education services has historically been challenging and fraught with error. Educators are commonly puzzled as to whether an EL student’s academic difficulties are the result of insufficient academic English language, inappropriate instruction, or an intrinsic learning disability. This article examines the influence of a university–district partnership designed to prepare bilingual/bicultural special educators with specific skills and knowledge in disentangling language difference from disability. A unique aspect of the program was that these “BiSped” educators were mostly bilingual, bicultural paraprofessionals in their schools. This feature of the program recognized the unique position …

Dissolved Organic Carbon From The Upper Rio Negro Protects Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Against Ionoregulatory Disturbances Caused By Low Ph Exposure, Rafael M. Duarte, D. Scott Smith, Adalberto L. Val, Chris M. Wood Feb 2016

Dissolved Organic Carbon From The Upper Rio Negro Protects Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Against Ionoregulatory Disturbances Caused By Low Ph Exposure, Rafael M. Duarte, D. Scott Smith, Adalberto L. Val, Chris M. Wood

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The so-called “blackwaters” of the Amazonian Rio Negro are rich in highly coloured dissolved organic carbon (DOC), but ion-poor and very acidic, conditions that would cause fatal ionoregulatory failure in most fish. However these blackwaters support 8% of the world’s ichthyofauna. We tested the hypothesis that native DOC provides protection against ionoregulatory dysfunction in this extreme environment. DOCs were isolated by reverse-osmosis from two Rio Negro sites. Physico-chemical characterization clearly indicated a terrigenous origin, with a high proportion of hydroxyl and phenolic sites, high chemical reactivity to protons, and unusual proteinaceous fluorescence. When tested using zebrafish (a model organism), Rio …

Brane Brick Models, Toric Calabi-Yau 4-Folds And 2d (0,2) Quivers, Sebastian Franco, Sangmin Lee, Rak-Kyeong Seong Feb 2016

Brane Brick Models, Toric Calabi-Yau 4-Folds And 2d (0,2) Quivers, Sebastian Franco, Sangmin Lee, Rak-Kyeong Seong

Publications and Research

We introduce brane brick models, a novel type of Type IIA brane congurations consisting of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane. Brane brick models are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. They fully encode the innite class of 2d (generically) N = (0; 2) gauge theories on the worldvolume of the D1-branes and streamline their connection to the probed geometries. For this purpose, we also introduce new combinatorial procedures for deriving the Calabi-Yau associated to a given gauge theory and vice versa.

We present a possible observing scenario for the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors over the next decade, with the intention of providing information to the astronomy community to facilitate planning for multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. We determine the expected sensitivity of the network to transient gravitational-wave signals, and study the capability of the network to determine the sky location of the source. We report our findings for gravitational-wave transients, with particular focus on gravitational-wave signals from the inspiral of binary neutron-star systems, which are considered the most promising for multi-messenger astronomy. The ability to localize the sources …

β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques and tau-related neurodegeneration are pathologic hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The utility of AD biomarkers, including those measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), in predicting future AD risk and cognitive decline is still being refined. Here, we explored potential relationships between functional connectivity (FC) patterns within the default-mode network (DMN), age, CSF biomarkers (Aβ42 and pTau181), and cognitive status in older adults. Multiple measures of FC were explored, including a novel time series-based measure [total interdependence (TI)]. In our sample of 27 cognitively normal older adults, no significant associations were found between levels of Aβ …

Second Order Approximation For Heat Conduction: Dissipation Principle And Free Energies, Giovambattista Amendola, Mauro Fabrizio, John Murrough Golden, Barbara Lazzari Feb 2016

Second Order Approximation For Heat Conduction: Dissipation Principle And Free Energies, Giovambattista Amendola, Mauro Fabrizio, John Murrough Golden, Barbara Lazzari

Articles

In the context of new models of heat conduction, the second-order approximation of Tzou’s theory, derived by Quintanilla and Racke, has been studied recently by two of the present authors, where it was proved equivalent to a fading memory material. The importance of determining free energy functionals for such materials, and indeed for any material with memory, is emphasized. Because the kernel does not satisfy certain convexity restrictions that allow us to obtain various traditional free energies for materials with fading memory, it is necessary to restrict the study to the minimum and related free energies, which do not require …

The Effects Of Tile-Drain Input On A Low-Gradient Agricultural Stream In Central Illinois: Using A Thermal End Member Mixing Model And A Statistical Analysis Approach, Zachary David Kisfalusi Feb 2016

The Effects Of Tile-Drain Input On A Low-Gradient Agricultural Stream In Central Illinois: Using A Thermal End Member Mixing Model And A Statistical Analysis Approach, Zachary David Kisfalusi

Theses and Dissertations

Tile-drains remove excess water from agricultural fields and channel it directly to the nearest surface water body decoupling the system from the natural flow paths. One way to measure the effects tile drains have on streams is to monitor the thermal energy both upstream and downstream of the tile input. In the temperate climate, a stream’s thermal signature experiences large fluctuations seasonally along with small diurnal changes. In contrast, groundwater temperature does not show these small-scale changes, and the seasonal changes are often muted and lagged in comparison to surface water. This project aimed to quantify any thermal change to …

Modeling Lotic Organism Populations With Partial Differential Equations, Chase Viss, Tom Clark, Eric Eager Feb 2016

Modeling Lotic Organism Populations With Partial Differential Equations, Chase Viss, Tom Clark, Eric Eager

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

We present in this paper a mathematical model for a population of caddisfly larvae in the Upper Mississippi River, which can either live in the current of the water or fix themselves to large wood debris submerged throughout the river. The model consists of a system of partial differential equations which captures these coupled dynamics. After introducing the model, we give a qualitative analysis of the dynamics, which includes a steady state solution followed by a numerical solution to the system using a finite difference scheme implemented in R. Finally, we extend the model to a competitive system with the …

Identifying Pertinent Elements Of Critical Thinking And Mathematical Thinking Used In Civil Engineering Practice In Relation To Engineering Education, Sharifah Osman, Mohd Salleh Bin Abu, Shahrin Bin Mohammad, Mahani Binti Mokhtar

The Qualitative Report

Engaging critical thinking and mathematical thinking in solving engineering problems is a way of approaching the engineering criteria of Engineering Accreditation Council, Board of Engineers Malaysia. Thus, it is timely and crucial to inculcate the critical thinking and mathematical thinking into the current engineering education. Unfortunately, information about these two modes of thinking in real-world engineering practice is found lacking in the literature. Therefore, this paper focuses on explaining an analytic process in identifying pertinent elements of critical thinking and mathematical thinking used in real-world civil engineering practice. The analytic process, namely open coding is a part of coding process …

Design, Synthesis And Screening Of Peptidomimetics For Anticancer And Antiviral Drug Candidates, Yi Liang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The high demand of novel peptide and peptidomimetics based on the amount of genomic and proteomic data need be matched by synthesis and screening. The design and synthesis of peptide and peptidomimetics are so important because the peptide and protein-protein interaction play a key role in molecule recognition and signaling. The modified peptides have better stability and pharmacokinetic properties which may be guided by rational design and molecular modeling. Now many organic and medicinal chemists have chosen peptide and peptidomimetics as potential drug candidates for many targets.

In this dissertation, research efforts in design and synthesis of cyclic peptides with …

Quantitative Reasoning For The Social Science Classroom, Maria Aysa-Lastra Feb 2016

Quantitative Reasoning For The Social Science Classroom, Maria Aysa-Lastra

Winthrop Conference on Teaching and Learning

Twenty five years ago the Mathematical Sciences Education Board (Scheaffer 1990) stated that “Citizens who cannot properly interpret quantitative data are, in this day and age, functionally illiterate” Quantitative reasoning then should not be reduced to the ability to perform arithmetic functions but must be conceived as “a habit of the mind, competency and comfort in working with numerical data” (AACU 2015). Moreover, quantitative reasoning is essential for the development of higher order level skills such as analyzing, evaluating and creating. In a world, in which data is produced more rapidly than it can be analyzed, employers note that …

All Aboard, All Attuned And All Involved: Fostering Learner Engagement And Teamwork With Clickers In An Introductory Computer Science Course At Winthrop University, Patrick Guilbaud, Michael Whitney

Winthrop Conference on Teaching and Learning

Modern education technology tools and learning systems provide the means for faculty to develop courses that offer connected and engaging learning opportunities. However, many courses, particularly those in the sciences and engineering disciplines, are not often designed to encourage collaboration, cooperation and teamwork.

Given the presence of a global and interconnected economy, it is critical for students to interact with classmates who hold diverse perspectives, experiences and opinions. Moreover, research shows that students who have had the opportunity to participate in learning activities with heterogeneous teams --early in their college life-- are more likely to develop lasting relationships with classmates …

Design And Analysis Of A Single-Camera Omnistereo Sensor For Quadrotor Micro Aerial Vehicles (Mavs), Carlos Jaramillo, Roberto G. Valenti, Ling Guo, Jizhong Xiao

Publications and Research

We describe the design and 3D sensing performance of an omnidirectional stereo (omnistereo) vision system applied to Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). The proposed omnistereo sensor employs a monocular camera that is co-axially aligned with a pair of hyperboloidal mirrors (a vertically-folded catadioptric configuration). We show that this arrangement provides a compact solution for omnidirectional 3D perception while mounted on top of propeller-based MAVs (not capable of large payloads). The theoretical single viewpoint (SVP) constraint helps us derive analytical solutions for the sensor’s projective geometry and generate SVP-compliant panoramic images to compute 3D information from stereo correspondences (in a truly synchronous …

New Flexible Channels For Room Temperature Tunneling Field Effect Transistors, Boyi Hao, Anjana Asthana, Paniz Khanmohammadi, Paul Bergstrom, Douglas R. Banyai, Madhusudan A. Savaikar, John A. Jaszczak, Yoke Khin Yap

Department of Physics Publications

Tunneling field effect transistors (TFETs) have been proposed to overcome the fundamental issues of Si based transistors, such as short channel effect, finite leakage current, and high contact resistance. Unfortunately, most if not all TFETs are operational only at cryogenic temperatures. Here we report that iron (Fe) quantum dots functionalized boron nitride nanotubes (QDs-BNNTs) can be used as the flexible tunneling channels of TFETs at room temperatures. The electrical insulating BNNTs are used as the one-dimensional (1D) substrates to confine the uniform formation of Fe QDs on their surface as the flexible tunneling channel. Consistent semiconductor-like transport behaviors under various …

Water Balance Monitoring For Two Bioretention Gardens In Omaha, Nebraska, 2011–14, Kellan R. Strauch, David L. Rus, Kent E. Holm

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

Document abstract

Bioretention gardens are used to help mitigate stormwater runoff in urban settings in an attempt to restore the hydrologic response of the developed land to a natural predevelopment response in which more water is infiltrated rather than routed directly to urban drainage networks. To better understand the performance of bioretention gardens in facilitating infiltration of stormwater in eastern Nebraska, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Douglas County Environmental Services and the Nebraska Environmental Trust, assessed the water balance of two bioretention gardens located in Omaha, Nebraska by monitoring the amount of stormwater entering and …

Ultrafast Saturation Of Electronic-Resonance-Enhanced Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering And Comparison For Pulse Durations In The Nanosecond To Femtosecond Regime, Anil K. Patnaik, Sukesh Roy, James R. Gord Feb 2016

Ultrafast Saturation Of Electronic-Resonance-Enhanced Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering And Comparison For Pulse Durations In The Nanosecond To Femtosecond Regime, Anil K. Patnaik, Sukesh Roy, James R. Gord

Physics Faculty Publications

The saturation threshold of a probe pulse in an ultrafast electronic-resonance-enhanced (ERE) coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) configuration is calculated. We demonstrate that while the underdamping condition is a sufficient condition for saturation of ERE-CARS with the long-pulse excitations, a transient gain must be achieved to saturate the ERE-CARS signal for the ultrafast probe regime. We identify that the area under the probe pulse can be used as a definitive parameter to determine the criterion for a saturation threshold for ultrafast ERE-CARS. From a simplified analytical solution and a detailed numerical calculation based on density-matrix equations, the saturation threshold of …

New Urjc-1 Material With Remarkable Stability And Acid-Base Catalytic Properties, Pedro Leo, Ferdnando Martinez, Guillermo Calleja, David Briones, Lukasz Wojtas

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Emerging new metal-organic structures with tunable physicochemical properties is an exciting research field for diverse applications. In this work, a novel metal-organic framework Cu(HIT)(DMF)0.5, named URJC-1, with a three-dimensional non-interpenetrated utp topological network, has been synthesized. This material exhibits a microporous structure with unsaturated copper centers and imidazole–tetrazole linkages that provide accessible Lewis acid/base sites. These features make URJC-1 an exceptional candidate for catalytic application in acid and base reactions of interest in fine chemistry. The URJC-1 material also displays a noteworthy thermal and chemical stability in different organic solvents of different polarity and boiling water. Its catalytic …

It is well known that a rank-r matroid M is uniquely determined by its circuits of size at most r. This paper proves that if M is binary and r ≥ 3, then M is uniquely determined by its circuits of size at most r - 1 unless M is a binary spike or a special restriction thereof. In the exceptional cases, M is determined up to isomorphism.

A Note On The Γ-Coefficients Of The Tree Eulerian Polynomial, Rafael S. González D'León

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider the generating polynomial of the number of rooted trees on the set {1,2,...,n} counted by the number of descending edges (a parent with a greater label than a child). This polynomial is an extension of the descent generating polynomial of the set of permutations of a totally ordered n-set, known as the Eulerian polynomial. We show how this extension shares some of the properties of the classical one. A classical product formula shows that this polynomial factors completely over the integers. From this product formula it can be concluded that this polynomial has positive coefficients …
