Dynamic Simulation, Optimization, And Control Of Flexible Chemical-Looping Combustion Processes, Lu Han Feb 2016

Dynamic Simulation, Optimization, And Control Of Flexible Chemical-Looping Combustion Processes, Lu Han

Doctoral Dissertations

Combustion of hydrocarbon fuels using the concept of chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a novel approach projected to have higher energy efficiency than conventional CO2 capture technologies. For CLC technologies to become commercially relevant, it is important to optimize the design of CLC reactor systems for high efficiencies for CO2capture and power generation. From an engineering point of view, CLC is a complex system with a large number of candidate materials and reactor configurations that need to be considered for process improvement. In this work, a model-based methodology was proposed as a formal framework to guide in developing …

Plasmon Excitations Of Multilayer Graphene On A Conducting Substrate, Godfrey Gumbs, Abdrii Iurov, Jhao-Ying Wu, M. F. Lin, Paula Fekete

Publications and Research

We predict the existence of low-frequency nonlocal plasmons at the vacuum-surface interface of a superlattice of N graphene layers interacting with conducting substrate. We derive a dispersion function that incorporates the polarization function of both the graphene monolayers and the semi-infinite electron liquid at whose surface the electrons scatter specularly. We find a surface plasmon-polariton that is not damped by particle-hole excitations or the bulk modes and which separates below the continuum mini-band of bulk plasmon modes. The surface plasmon frequency of the hybrid structure always lies below s = p/ 2, the surface plasmon frequency of the conducting substrate. …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report results of a wideband search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars within the Orion spur towards both the inner and outer regions of our Galaxy. As gravitational waves interact very weakly with matter, the search is unimpeded by dust and concentrations of stars. One search disk (A) is 6.87° in diameter and centered on 20h10m54.71s+33°33′25.29′′, and the other (B) is 7.45° in diameter and centered on 8h35m20.61s-46°49′25.151′′. We explored the frequency range of 50-1500 Hz and frequency derivative from 0 to -5×10-9 Hz/s. A multistage, loosely coherent search program allowed probing more deeply than before in …

Environmental Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Urbanization is a global demographic trend that may have significant and detrimental effects on adjacent urban ecosystems. Lonicer Maackii (L. maackii), commonly referred to as Amur honeysuckle, is an invasive shrub that has invaded the remnant temperate hardwood forests of Rock Island County, IL. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of urbanization and urban soil properties on the degree of L. maackii invasion throughout this county next to the Mississippi river. Soil samples were tested at 36 forest sites for Soil Organic Matter and Soil texture. Linear regression models were ran on the results of …

Ethics And Character Formation In Sports: A Philosophical Perspective, Timothy Madigan Feb 2016

Ethics And Character Formation In Sports: A Philosophical Perspective, Timothy Madigan

Philosophy and Classical Studies Faculty/Staff Publications

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) famously proclaimed that “God is dead and we have killed Him.” Might one say similarly that in today s “winner take all” society “sportsmanship is dead and we have killed it”? Is the very concept no longer relevant in the modern age of competitive sports? In this essay I will show how three long dead philosophers—Aristotle, Kant, and the aforementioned Nietzsche—still have much to teach us about sportsmanship and its continued relevance for the present day.

Impaired Mitochondrial Function Due To Familial Alzheimers Disease-Causing Presenilins Mutants Via Calcium Disruptions, Patrick T. Toglia, King-Ho Cheung, Don-On Daniel Mak, Ghamim Ullah

Physics Faculty Publications

Muatans in presenilins (PS1 or PS2) is the major cause of Familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD). FAD causing PS mutants affect intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) homeostasis by enhancing the gating of inositol trisphosphate (IP3) receptor (IP3R) Ca2+ release channels on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), leading to exaggerated Ca2+ release into the cytoplasm (Cheung et al., Neuron 2008:871, Sci. Signal 2010:ra22). Using experimental IP3R-mediated Ca2+ release data, in conjunction with a computational model of cell bioenergetics (Cortassa et al., Biophys. J. 2003:2734, 2004:2067), we explore how the differences in …

Pre-Service Student-Teachers' Perceptions Of Play In The Early Childhood Classroom After Research Analysis With Discussion-Case Application: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Approach, Meredith Resnick Feb 2016

Pre-Service Student-Teachers' Perceptions Of Play In The Early Childhood Classroom After Research Analysis With Discussion-Case Application: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Approach, Meredith Resnick

Theses and Dissertations

Despite persuasive research demonstrating the importance of play in early childhood education, there is a problematic trend in early childhood classrooms of increased academics and high-stakes test preparation, with less opportunity for play (Brashier & Norris, 2008; Lynch, 2015; Nicolopoulou, 2011). This sequential explanatory mixed method study was designed to examine the impact and experience of participating in facilitated research analysis with discussion-case application on early childhood pre-service teachers’ knowledge of and attitude towards the role and value of play in the classroom, as well as their self-confidence in promoting developmentally appropriate play opportunities in the classroom. The findings indicate …

Three-Dimensional Geologic Model Of Glacial Outwash In Mclean County, Illinois, Based On Seismic Refraction Studies, Matthew Hartz, David H. Malone, Robert Nelson

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

Seven two-dimensional (2-D) seismic refraction lines were used to determine the thickness and geometry of a valley train outwash deposit of the Quaternary Henry Formation near Heyworth in southern McLean County, Illinois. These refraction data were collected and processed in 2-D, then imported into a Petrel, a three-dimensional (3-D) geological modeling software package. The 3-D geologic model was built using the velocity attribute of the seismic refraction data. The 3-D velocity model was then verified manually by moving a cross-section through the velocity model at 20 m increments. These selected data points were used to create 3-D horizons, surfaces, and …

Weak measurement has provided new insight into the nature of quantum measurement, by demonstrating the ability to extract average state information without fully projecting the system. For single-qubit measurements, this partial projection has been demonstrated with violations of the Leggett–Garg inequality. Here we investigate the effects of weak measurement on a maximally entangled Bell state through application of the Hybrid Bell–Leggett–Garg inequality (BLGI) on a linear chain of four transmon qubits. By correlating the results of weak ancilla measurements with subsequent projective readout, we achieve a violation of the BLGI with 27 s.d.s. of certainty.

Development And Validation Of A Sensitive Uplc-Ms/Ms Method For The Quantitation Of [13c]Sucrose In Rat Plasma, Blood, And Brain: Its Application To The Measurement Of Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability, Mohammad K. Miah, Ulrich Bickel, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Accurate and reproducible measurement of blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity is critical in the assessment of the pathophysiology of the central nervous system disorders and in monitoring therapeutic effects. The widely-used low molecular weight marker [14C]sucrose is non-specific in the absence of chromatographic separation. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a sensitive and reproducible LC-MS/MS method for the analysis of stable isotopemodified [13C12]sucrose in brain, plasma, and blood to determine BBB permeability to sucrose. After addition of internal standard (IS, [13C6]sucrose), the marker and IS were recovered from diluted rat blood, plasma, and brain homogenate by protein …

Determination Of The Goos-Hänchen Shift In Dielectric Waveguides Via Photo Emission Electron Microscopy In The Visible Spectrum, Theodore Stedmark, Robert Campbell Word, Rolf Kӧnenkamp

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Photoemission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) is a versatile tool that relies on the photoelectric effect to produce high-resolution images. Pulse lasers allow for multi-photon PEEM where multiple photons are required excite a single electron. This non-linear process can directly image the near field region of electromagnetic fields in materials. We use this ability here to analyze wave propagation in a linear dielectric waveguide with wavelengths of 410nm and 780nm. The propagation constant of the waveguide can be extracted from the interference pattern created by the coupled and incident light and shows distinct polarization dependence. The electromagnetic field interaction at the boundaries …

In Crystallo Capture Of A Covalent Intermediate In The Udp-Galactopyranose Mutase Reaction, Ritcha Mehra-Chaudhary, Yumin Dai, Pablo Sobrado, John J. Tanner

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) plays an essential role in galactofuranose biosynthesis in pathogens by catalyzing the conversion of UDP-galactopyranose to UDP-galactofuranose. Here we report the first crystal structure of a covalent intermediate in the UGM reaction. The 2.3 Å resolution structure reveals UDP bound in the active site and galactopyranose linked to the FAD through a covalent bond between the anomeric C of galactopyranose and N5 of the FAD. The structure confirms the role of the flavin as nucleophile and supports the hypothesis that the proton destined for O5 of galactofuranose is shuttled from N5 of the FAD via O4 of …

Direct Measurement Of Hairpin‐Like Vortices In The Bottom Boundary Layer Of The Coastal Ocean, Edward C.C. Steele, W. Alex M. Nimmo‐Smith, Andrey Vlasenko Feb 2016

Direct Measurement Of Hairpin‐Like Vortices In The Bottom Boundary Layer Of The Coastal Ocean, Edward C.C. Steele, W. Alex M. Nimmo‐Smith, Andrey Vlasenko

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Laboratory measurements and numerical modeling at low Reynolds numbers (Reθ<7700) indicate the energy-containing turbulence of boundary layer flows comprises coherent packets of hairpin vortices. Here direct measurements in the bottom boundary layer of the coastal ocean at higher Reynolds numbers (Reθ = 266,150) show tidal flows also contain packets of large vortices separated by periods of more quiescent conditions. The 1452 vortices recorded within a 20 min period are typically aligned along stream (∼8.0° from the mean flow direction) and inclined to the horizontal (∼27.0° from the seabed), with a mean period of occurrence of 4.3 s. These results lend three-dimensional, in situ support to an interpretation of the coastal ocean bottom boundary layer as comprising coherent packets of hairpin vortices. This demonstrates a direct linkage from low Reynolds …

River plumes often feature turbulent processes in the frontal zone and interfacial region at base of the plume, which ultimately impact spreading and mixing rates with the ambient coastal ocean. The degree to which these processes govern overall plume mixing is yet to be quantified with microstructure observations. A field campaign was conducted in a river plume in the northeast Gulf of Mexico in December 2013, in order to assess mixing processes that could potentially impact transport and dispersion of surface material near coastal regions. Current velocity, density, and Turbulent Kinetic Energy Values, ε, were obtained using an Acoustic …

Interface-Induced Spin Polarization In Graphene On Chromia, Renu Choudhary, Pankaj Kumar, Priyanka Manchanda, David J. Sellmyer, Peter A. Dowben, Arti Kashyap, Ralph Skomski

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The induced spin polarization of graphene on Cr2O3 (001) is investigated using density-functional theory (DFT) and model calculations. The magnetic moment in graphene is a proximity effect and can be regarded as a second-order Stoner scenario, and similar mechanisms are likely realized for all graphene systems with an insulating magnetic substrate. In the absence of charge transfer, the magnetic moment would be quadratic in the exchange field, as contrasted to the usually encountered approximately linear dependence. The net magnetization of the graphene is small, of the order of 0.01 μB per atom, but the energy-dependent spin …
