An Optimized Proportionate Adaptive Algorithm For Sparse System Identification, Silviu Ciochina, Constantin Paleologu, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant Feb 2016

An Optimized Proportionate Adaptive Algorithm For Sparse System Identification, Silviu Ciochina, Constantin Paleologu, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Proportionate-type adaptive algorithms are commonly used for the identification of sparse impulse responses, like in network and acoustic echo cancellation. In this paper, we propose an optimized proportionate LMS adaptive filter in the context of a state variable model. The algorithm follows an optimization criterion based on the minimization of the system misalignment and uses an iterative procedure for computing the proportionate factors. Consequently, it achieves a proper compromise between the performance criteria, i.e., fast convergence/tracking and low mis adjustment. Simulations performed in the context of sparse system identification indicate the good behavior of the proposed algorithm.

Travel Mode Choice Framework Incorporating Realistic Bike And Walk Routes, Joseph Broach Feb 2016

Travel Mode Choice Framework Incorporating Realistic Bike And Walk Routes, Joseph Broach

Dissertations and Theses

For a number of reasons--congestion, public health, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, demographic shifts, and community livability to name a few--the importance of walking and bicycling as transportation options will only continue to increase. Currently, policy interest and infrastructure funding for nonmotorized modes far outstrip our ability to model bike and walk travel. To ensure scarce resources are used most effectively, accurate models sensitive to key policy variables are needed to support long-range planning and project evaluation, and to continue adding to our growing understanding of key factors driving walk and bike behavior. This research attempts to synthesize and advance …

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Threshold phenomena (or channel-closing effects) are analyzed in high-order harmonic generation (HHG) by atoms in a two-color laser field with orthogonal linearly polarized components of a fundamental field and its second harmonic. We show that the threshold behavior of HHG rates for the case of a weak second harmonic component is sensitive to the parity of a closing multiphoton ionization channel and the spatial symmetry of the initial bound state of the target atom, while for the case of comparable intensities of both components, suppression of threshold phenomena is observed as the relative phase between the components of a two-color …

A Preliminary Study On The Use Of Mind Mapping As A Visual-Learning Strategy In General Education Science Classes For Arabic Speakers In The United Arab Emirates., Kenesha Wilson, Eddia Copeland Solas, Natalie Guthrie-Dixon Feb 2016

A Preliminary Study On The Use Of Mind Mapping As A Visual-Learning Strategy In General Education Science Classes For Arabic Speakers In The United Arab Emirates., Kenesha Wilson, Eddia Copeland Solas, Natalie Guthrie-Dixon

All Works

Mind mapping was introduced as a culturally relevant pedagogy aimed at enhancing the teaching and learning experience in a general education, Environmental Science class for mostly Emirati English Language Learners (ELL). Anecdotal evidence suggests that the students are very artistic and visual and enjoy group-based activities. It was decided to integrate an intervention that would incorporate Emirati artistic and collaborative practices, in an effort to engage them on all levels, such that their academic attainment is positively affected. Preliminary results based on a group of 60 students, from on-going active research, suggest that this method is quite useful in helping …

Photonic Gas Sensors Exploiting Directly The Optical Properties Of Hybrid Carbon Nanotube Localized Surface Plasmon Structures, T Allsop, R Arif, R Neal, K Kalli, Et Al Feb 2016

Photonic Gas Sensors Exploiting Directly The Optical Properties Of Hybrid Carbon Nanotube Localized Surface Plasmon Structures, T Allsop, R Arif, R Neal, K Kalli, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We investigate the modification of the optical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) resulting from a chemical reaction triggered by the presence of a specific compound (gaseous carbon dioxide (CO2)) and show this mechanism has important consequences for chemical sensing. CNTs have attracted significant research interest because they can be functionalized for a particular chemical, yielding a specific physical response which suggests many potential applications in the fields of nanotechnology and sensing. So far, however, utilizing their optical properties for this purpose has proven to be challenging. We demonstrate the use of localized surface plasmons generated on a nanostructured thin film, …

Beginning Female And Male Catholic School Principals In Western Australia - It's Not Simply A Matter Of Gender!, Debra Sayce, Shane Lavery

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

Commencing a principalship for the first time is demanding. Not only must beginning principals cultivate a variety of skills to effectively lead an educational institution, they do so while at the same time experiencing the vicissitudes associated with the newness of the role (Darish, 2006; Walker & Oian, 2006). This study explored the leadership experiences and perceptions of thirteen beginning Catholic school principals in Western Australia. Qualitative data were gathered through thirteen semi-structured interviews and researcher-generated field notes. These data were considered from the perspective of gender; seven of the beginning principals were female and six were male. The research …

Exploring Validity And Reliability For The Revised Smps Look-For Protocol, Jonathan D. Bostic, Gabriel T. Matney, Toni Sondergeld

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

The Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) describe mathematical behaviors and habits that students should express during mathematics instruction. Thus teachers should promote them during classroom-based mathematics instruction. The purpose of this manuscript is to discuss the validation process for an observation protocol called the Revised SMPs Look-for Protocol, which is meant to fill this gap. An implication of this study is that users with a robust understanding of the SMPs may feel confident using the protocol as a validated and reliable tool in research and school-based settings.

Student-Teacher Affect In Stem College Course Transformation, Matthew T. Patton, Leilani Arthurs Feb 2016

Student-Teacher Affect In Stem College Course Transformation, Matthew T. Patton, Leilani Arthurs

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Despite federal efforts to support the propagation of active-learning strategies in introductory college science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, instructor adoption of these strategies lags behind the published research that touts their efficacy for students’ learning. Possible reasons for this lag are varied and, herein, we investigate the potential role that students play in STEM instructors’ decisions on whether and how to adopt active-learning strategies. Our study was conducted at a large public university in the Midwest. Grounded in social cognitive theory, we use a mixed methods approach that combines 34 classroom observations, one-onone interviews with students (n=57) and …

Swans: Their Biology And Natural History, Paul A. Johnsgard

Zea E-Books Collection

The seven species of swans of the world are an easily and universally recognized group of waterfowl, which have historically played important roles in the folklore, myths and legends in many of the world’s cultures. Among the largest of all flying birds, they have also almost universally been used as symbols of royalty, grace and beauty, and largely for these reasons swans have only rarely been considered acceptable as targets for sport hunting. Swans occur on all the continents except Africa, although most species are associated with the temperate and arctic zones of North America and Eurasia. Among birds, swans …

In this paper we present the results of the first low frequency all-sky search of continuous gravitational wave signals conducted on Virgo VSR2 and VSR4 data. The search covered the full sky, a frequency range between 20 and 128 Hz with a range of spin-down between -1.0×10-10 and +1.5×10-11 Hz/s, and was based on a hierarchical approach. The starting point was a set of short fast Fourier transforms, of length 8192 s, built from the calibrated strain data. Aggressive data cleaning, in both the time and frequency domains, has been done in order to remove, as much as possible, the …

Spatial Language And Converseness., M Burigo, Kr Coventry, A Cangelosi, D Lynott Feb 2016

Spatial Language And Converseness., M Burigo, Kr Coventry, A Cangelosi, D Lynott

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Typical spatial language sentences consist of describing the location of an object (the located object) in relation to another object (the reference object) as in "The book is above the vase". While it has been suggested that the properties of the located object (the book) are not translated into language because they are irrelevant when exchanging location information (Talmy, 1983), it has been shown that the orientation of the located object affects the production and comprehension of spatial descriptions (Burigo & Sacchi, 2013). In line with the claim that spatial language apprehension involves inferences about relations that hold between objects …
