Kate is also an accomplished recreational mathematician and poet. To try to match in a small way her creative ability, we offer three puzzle-games in her honor: O'BEIRNE's TRI-HEX, PAPPUS and "KATe JONES". These three are specific examples of (9,3) symmetric configurations. More generally an (n,r) configuration is a collection of n "points"and n "lines" subject to the following requirements:
Rl: Any two points belong to at most one line.
R2: Each line has r points, and each point belongs to r lines.

It is well known that auroral radio wave absorption, as measured by riometers, consists of periods of relative quiescence which are interrupted by short bursts of activity. Such patterns in activity are observed in systems ranging from the stock market to turbulence, i.e. they exhibit intermittency. In the case of the auroral absorption it has also been found that intermittency strongly depends on the magnetic local time, being largest in the night-time sector. This can be interpreted as indicating that the precipitating particles responsible of the absorption exhibit intermittency, especially near the substorm eye, where the level of turbulence increases. …

An Evaluation Of An Adaptive Learning Tool In An Introductory Business Course, Tim A. Rogers
Dissertations
Adding technology to the classroom has been an instructional strategy used by many higher-education institutions to increase student success, but merely adding computers, multimedia devices, and other technology to the classroom with pedagogical arbitrariness has proven to have little effect. The purpose of this study was to determine if using the adaptive learning technology (ALT) tool, LearnSmart, in seated introductory business courses would result in a statistically significant difference in unit exam scores, to analyze changes in exam performance through different time increments used of the ALT, and to investigate correlations between the student’s metacognition in the ALT module and …

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Flipped Classroom And Traditional Classroom Student Engagement And Teaching Methodologies, Michael T. Holik
Dissertations
Studies exist on the effectiveness of learning in a flipped classroom learning setting; however, there is limited research available regarding the success or failure rates of flipped classroom learning in technical culinary arts programs. This study, using an action-based research approach, was designed to gather evidence from a technical education program to determine if students perform better in the flipped classroom or traditional classroom. Multiple instruments were designed to gather information about the culinary flipped classroom format. Instructor and student perceptions about the learning in each type of classroom were explored, levels of student engagement were recorded, and final course …

The impact of widespread and common environmental factors, such as chemical contaminants, on infectious disease risk in amphibians is particularly important because both chemical contaminants and infectious disease have been implicated in worldwide amphibian declines. Here we report on the lone and combined effects of exposure to parasitic cercariae (larval stage) of the digenetic trematode, Acanthostomum burminis, and four commonly used pesticides (insecticides: chlorpyrifos, dimethoate; herbicides: glyphosate, propanil) at ecologically relevant concentrations on the survival, growth, and development of the common hourglass tree frog, Polypedates cruciger Blyth 1852. There was no evidence of any pesticide-induced mortality on cercariae because all …
Price-Level Regulation And Its Reform, James Ming Chen
Price-Level Regulation And Its Reform, James Ming Chen
Marquette Law Review
Price-level, or “price-cap,” regulation offers an alluring alternative to the traditional technique of monitoring a regulated firm’s profits. This Article contrasts price-level regulation with conventional cost-of-service ratemaking and with Ramsey pricing. Price-level regulation stands as a market-based, incentive-driven “third way” between traditional regulation and complete deregulation. Although some jurisdictions have set price caps according to operating cost and rate-of-return calculations that clearly parallel those steps in conventional ratemaking, this Article will focus on price-level methodologies that combine an economy-wide measure of inflation with an x-factor reflecting total factor productivity within a regulated industry.
After addressing the simpler component of price-level …
Fostering Metacognition In K-12 Classrooms: Recommendations For Practice, Markeya S. Peteranetz
Fostering Metacognition In K-12 Classrooms: Recommendations For Practice, Markeya S. Peteranetz
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
This article makes the case for why it is important for educators to intentionally foster students’ metacognition. Metacognition is often defined as thinking about thinking, but it is more complete to describe it as including knowledge, awareness, and control of one’s own cognition and human cognition in general. Two primary components of metacognition, knowledge of cognition and regulation of cognition, are presented and described with regard to learning contexts. Metacognition grows as part of cognitive development and can also be further enhanced through instruction at all levels of schooling. Research that indicates metacognition can be increased through instruction and is …

The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence factors on willingness to use a public bicycle system and to analyze the impact of each. Ordered Logit and Probit models were used to analyze the change in user willingness after improvements were made. Data were collected from a random survey conducted in September and October 2014 in Nanjing, China. The findings of this research indicate seven factors that most influence willingness to use a public bicycle system, including socioeconomic factors and journey restrictions. Socioeconomic factors (gender, employment, and car ownership) have more impact on user willingness than journey restrictions. …

Transport planning is an important aspect of urban planning. In this regard, enhancement of public transport systems and guiding urban travels towards them has found a crucial role in traffic improvement, preventing capital waste, and achieving sustainable cities. Mashhad, Iran, the second largest city in Iran, with a population of three million, has two main systems of public transport, light rail transit (LRT) and bus rapid transit (BRT). In designing these lines, not enough attention was paid to urban sustainability principles and maximizing access. The aim of this study was to redesign the main public transport lines using the approach …

Globular clusters (GCs) can be considered discrete, long-lived, dynamical tracers that retain crucial information about the assembly history of their parent galaxy. In this paper, we present a new catalogue of GC velocities and colours for the lenticular galaxy NGC 1023, we study their kinematics and spatial distribution, in comparison with the underlying stellar kinematics and surface brightness profile, and we test a new method for studying GC properties. Specifically, we decompose the galaxy light into its spheroid (assumed to represent the bulge+halo components) and disc components and use it to assign to each GC a probability of belonging to …

Trails As Resource Connections In Your Community, Jayoung Koo
Trails As Resource Connections In Your Community, Jayoung Koo
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
A trail is a linear path segment that is naturally or intentionally created by users (humans and/or animals) to traverse their landscape and connect destinations. As a collective, a trail system is comprised of multiple paths that are connected in an overall network that may include paths exclusively in towns or in nature, but also connect one place to another place. Effectively laid out trails can fulfill multiple goals and objectives and also have significant indirect benefits for communities. Depending on the form or function, there are different types of trails to be considered (Table 1). Trail systems can include …

Trailblazers: Two Case Studies For Community Trails, Jayoung Koo
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Trails function as beneficial resources for communities in support of their various goals; although how projects are implemented and what specific features are created will differ depending on a community’s geographic location, socio-economic context and potential, and historical and cultural assets. While the essence of a trail project may seem simple and universal in nature, different communities with different contexts, shapes and sizes can apply a range of trail planning strategies and approaches to fit their needs and physical community. Ultimately, each community’s trail project will differ from their neighbor’s as well as from the perceived “ideal” trail. In any …
Trail Planning, Jayoung Koo
Trail Planning, Jayoung Koo
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
There are two general ways to begin a trail project in a community. The first method is for the community (client) to hire design or planning professionals such as landscape architects, urban planners or engineers to lead a trail project on behalf of the community. The second way involves a grass roots approach where a community gets the project started and develops the conceptual ideas on their own and then later brings in professionals during the design phase. Regardless of the approach for the initial phase, professionals need to be involved to eventually construct the trail(s) but how much of …

Nutrients are constantly cycling through farms. Nutrients come onto a farm in the form of feed, commercial fertilizers, manure, or compost, and they leave the farm with harvested crops, sold livestock, and off-site disposal of manure and other waste. Sometimes nutrients are even lost to the air, soil, or water. Nutrient management allows farmers to use nutrients (specifically nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) wisely for optimal economic benefit with minimal impact on the environment.
Approximately 80 percent of nutrients fed to an animal passes through the gut and into its manure. If managed correctly, the nutrients and organic matter in this …

Genetically Engineered Crops: Emerging Opportunities, Paul C. Vincelli
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Biotechnology is “any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use.” This definition encompasses many, many applications, including traditional ones such as fermentation of alcoholic beverages.
In certain biotech crops, their genetic material (DNA) has been purposefully manipulated in the laboratory. These genetically engineered crops are often called “GMOs,” an acronym for “genetically modified organisms.” These GMOs are the focus of this publication.

Anyone who has ever planted a garden knows not only the rewards of beautiful flowers, fruit, and/ or vegetables, but also the disappointment when plants become diseased or damaged. Many factors cause plants to exhibit poor vigor, changes in appearance, or even death. Both abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) factors can negatively impact plant heath. Disorders that result from non-living factors (such as nutrient deficiencies, over/under watering, temperature stress, and chemical damage) are discussed in subsequent chapters. This chapter focuses on those living organisms that cause disease: fungi, water molds, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, phytoplasmas, and parasitic plants.
