Conference Proceedings

This study presents a round robin comparison of absolute electron yields of conducting and insulating materials performed in four international laboratories. Measurements are reported for two standard elemental conducting samples with reproducible sample preparation for Au and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The primary objectives of the study were to determine the consistency and uncertainties of these absolute yields measurements, and to investigate the effects of the similarities and differences of the diverse facilities. In this initial round robin study, HOPG total electron yield results were found to be more reproducible than those for Au. Surface contamination significantly affected the …

Science-Based Policy Plan For Australia's Coral Reefs, David Booth, Lauren Nadler, Steve Doo, Elizabeth Madin, Sue-Ann Watson

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

Australia’s coral reefs are currently under threat from a range of short-‐ and long-‐term stressors. The ability of corals to recover from acute disturbance events, such as bleaching, cyclones and crown-of-thorns seastars outbreaks, is greatly influenced by the multitude of stressors reefs are currently experiencing (1). Since healthy coral habitat is essential for the persistence of associated fish and invertebrate communities, as well as the industries that rely on them (2), all possible action must be taken to reduce stress factors to corals and associated organisms. Practical changes to current reef policies will reverse the decline in the health of …

Extremely Low Secondary Electron Emission From Metal/Dielectric Particulate Coatings, Isabel Montero, L Aguilera, Leandro Olano, María E. Dávila, Luis Galán, Jr Dennison, Gregory Wilson

Presentations

Research on low secondary electron emission coatings is essential for the design and manufacture of space high-power RF devices without multipactor discharge. This paper discusses some of the factors that reduce secondary electron emission for metal-dielectric surfaces. We have studied the total electron yield (TEY) behavior of a particulate coating composed of a mixture of a metal (aluminum) nanoparticulates in solid state contact with a particulate dielectric material (polyimide thermosetting resin). Surface charging, roughness, and volume fraction are utilized as the main parameters to characterize the electron emission behavior, which can effectively be determined by continuous (total dose 42.5 nC/mm …

Extremely Low Secondary Electron Emission From Metal/Dielectricparticulate Coatings, Isabel Montero, L Aguilera, Leandro Olano, María E. Dávila, V. Nistor, L. Galán, Jr Dennison, Gregory Wilson

Conference Proceedings

We have studied the SEY behaviour of a particulate coating composed of a mixture of a metal (aluminum) in solid state contact with a particulate dielectric material (polyimide thermosetting resin). Surface charging, roughness, and volume fraction are utilized as the main parameters to characterize the electron emission behaviour. Apart from the important role played by surface composition in the SEY, the influence of the dielectric volume fraction has demonstrated to be critical to achieve a significant reduction of SEY. it was found that E1 of the particulate sample increased with increasing dielectric volume fraction. An extremely high first crossover energy, …

Synergistic Models Of Electron Emission And Transport Measurements Of Disordered Sio2, Jr Dennison, Jodie Corbridge Gillespie, Allen Andersen, Amberly Evans Jensen, Gregory Wilson, Justin Dekany, Alec Sim, Ryan C. Hoffmann

Conference Proceedings

An important way for the spacecraft charging community to address the expanding necessity for extensive characterization of electron emission and transport properties of materials is to expand the role of more fundamental materials physics. This includes the development of unifying theoretical models of the charge transport equations based on the creation, distribution, and occupancy of defect densities of states. Models that emphasize the synergistic relation between fitting parameters for diverse measurements can also lead to a better understanding of materials and facilitate solutions to spacecraft charging issues. As an example of this approach, we present results of many different measurements …

Why Is The Pack Persuasive? The Effect Of Choice Status On Perceptions Of Quality, Freda B. Lynn, Brent Simpson, Mark H. Walker, Colin Peterson

Faculty Publications

The logic of social proof and related arguments posits that decision makers interpret an actor's sociometric position (such as popularity) as a signal for quality, especially when quality itself is difficult to ascertain. Although prior work shows that market-level behavioral patterns are consistent with this micro-level account, we seek to explicitly examine the extent to which (and the conditions under which) sociometric status information actually triggers assumptions about an actor's underlying quality. We introduce two new web-based experiments to investigate how popularity impacts the selection of teammates. We find that the presence of popularity information creates a surprisingly robust quality …

The Removal Kinetics Of Dissolved Organic Matter And The Optical Clarity Of Groundwater, Francis H. Chapelle, Yuan Shen, Eric W. Strom, Ronald Benner Apr 2016

The Removal Kinetics Of Dissolved Organic Matter And The Optical Clarity Of Groundwater, Francis H. Chapelle, Yuan Shen, Eric W. Strom, Ronald Benner

Faculty Publications

Concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and ultraviolet/visible light absorbance decrease systematically as groundwater moves through the unsaturated zones overlying aquifers and along flowpaths within aquifers. These changes occur over distances of tens of meters (m) implying rapid removal kinetics of the chromophoric DOM that imparts color to groundwater. A one-compartment input-output model was used to derive a differential equation describing the removal of DOM from the dissolved phase due to the combined effects of biodegradation and sorption. The general solution to the equation was parameterized using a 2-year record of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration changes in groundwater at …

A Graph-Based Semantics Workbench For Concurrent Asynchronous Programs, Claudio Corrodi, Alexander Heußner, Christopher M. Poskitt

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A number of novel programming languages and libraries have been proposed that offer simpler-to-use models of concurrency than threads. It is challenging, however, to devise execution models that successfully realise their abstractions without forfeiting performance or introducing unintended behaviours. This is exemplified by Scoop—a concurrent object-oriented message-passing language—which has seen multiple semantics proposed and implemented over its evolution. We propose a “semantics workbench” with fully and semi-automatic tools for Scoop, that can be used to analyse and compare programs with respect to different execution models. We demonstrate its use in checking the consistency of semantics by applying it to a …

Optimal Phase Masks For High Contrast Imaging Applications, Garreth J. Ruane Apr 2016

Optimal Phase Masks For High Contrast Imaging Applications, Garreth J. Ruane

Theses

Phase-only optical elements can provide a number of important functions for high-contrast imaging. This thesis presents analytical and numerical optical design methods for accomplishing specific tasks, the most significant of which is the precise suppression of light from a distant point source. Instruments designed for this purpose are known as coronagraphs. Here, advanced coronagraph designs are presented that offer improved theoretical performance in comparison to the current state-of-the-art. Applications of these systems include the direct imaging and characterization of exoplanets and circumstellar disks with high sensitivity. Several new coronagraph designs are introduced and, in some cases, experimental support is provided. …

Balancing Medical Resident Education And Workload While Ensuring Quality Patient Care, Akshit Agarwal Apr 2016

Balancing Medical Resident Education And Workload While Ensuring Quality Patient Care, Akshit Agarwal

Theses

Medical residency is a requirement for medical professionals to practice medicine. Residency programs in internal medicine lasts 3 years and require residents to undergo a series of supervised rotations in elective, inpatient, and ambulatory units. Typically a team of chief residents develops a yearly rotational schedule that assigns residents to various departments for each week of the year, and for each day of the week. Scheduling resident rotations is complex as it needs to consider various academic, managerial, and legal restrictions while ensuring that the resulting schedules facilitate patient care and are balanced in terms of resident educational experience, workload, …

Stoicism In Descartes, Pascal, And Spinoza: Examining Neostoicism’S Influence In The Seventeenth Century, Daniel Collette Apr 2016

Stoicism In Descartes, Pascal, And Spinoza: Examining Neostoicism’S Influence In The Seventeenth Century, Daniel Collette

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation focuses on the moral philosophy of Descartes, Pascal, and Spinoza in the context of the revival of Stoicism within the seventeenth century. There are many misinterpretations about early modern ethical theories due to a lack of proper awareness of Stoicism in the early modern period. My project rectifies this by highlighting understated Stoic themes in these early modern texts that offer new clarity to their morality. Although these three philosophers hold very different metaphysical commitments, each embraces a different aspect of Stoicism, letting it influence but not define his work. By addressing the Stoic themes on the morality …

Chiral Boro-Phosphates In Asymmetric Catalysis: 1,4-Reduction Of Enones And Reductive Aldol, Susana Sorina Lopez Apr 2016

Chiral Boro-Phosphates In Asymmetric Catalysis: 1,4-Reduction Of Enones And Reductive Aldol, Susana Sorina Lopez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The biological activity of the pharmaceutical drugs often depends on how it fits with a receptor making stereochemistry a key component. Selective reactions can limit or avoid the mixture of enantiomers obtained. One such reaction is the selective reduction of a carbon-carbon double bond in the presence of a carbonyl. Although efficient, current asymmetric synthesis methods have limitations such as harsh reaction conditions, the high costs of chiral catalysts and the toxicity of the metal-based catalysts. Catalysts derived from small organic molecules have become an attractive alternative which have been explored more rigorously in recent years. Using a BINOL-derived boro-phosphate …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we leverage predictive and prescriptive analytics to develop decision support systems to promote the use of renewable energy in society. Since electricity from renewable energy sources is still relatively expensive, there are variety of financial incentive programs available in different regions. Our research focuses on financial incentive programs and tackles two main problem: 1) how to optimally design and control hybrid renewable energy systems for residential and commercial buildings given the capacity based and performance based incentives, and 2) how to develop a model-based system for policy makers for designing optimal financial incentive programs to promote investment …

Leibniz's More Fundamental Ontology: From Overshadowed Individuals To Metaphysical Atoms, Marin Lucio Mare Apr 2016

Leibniz's More Fundamental Ontology: From Overshadowed Individuals To Metaphysical Atoms, Marin Lucio Mare

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I aim to offer an innovative interpretation of Leibniz’s philosophy, first by examining how the various views that make up his ontology of individual substance involve a persistent rejection of atomism in natural philosophy and secondly, by exploring the significance of this rejection in the larger context of Seventeenth-century physics. My thesis is structured as a developmental story, each chapter analyzing the discontinuities or changes Leibniz makes to his views on individuation and atomism from his early to late years. The goal is to illuminate underrepresented views on individuals and atoms throughout Leibniz’s works and thus bring a clearer understanding …

Assessing Property Value Impacts Of Access To Bus Rapid Transit (Brt): Case Study Of The Cleveland Healthline, Victoria A. Perk

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The nation’s economy depends heavily on mobility of goods and people. As communities look to improve mobility, many options can be considered, including roadway improvements, congestion-pricing options such as dynamic tolling and toll lanes, and public transit. Investment in public transit services can come in the form of increased and enhanced bus services, including bus rapid transit (BRT), as well as rail transit investments. As BRT continues to grow in popularity in the United States, a better understanding of the mode’s impacts on land uses and economic development is needed. One method of assessing the mode’s impacts is by examining …

Elementary School Students' Quantitative Reasoning: Processing Whole Numbers And Proportions, Ty W. Boyer, Natalie Branch Apr 2016

Elementary School Students' Quantitative Reasoning: Processing Whole Numbers And Proportions, Ty W. Boyer, Natalie Branch

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Elementary school-aged children have great difficulty reasoning proportionally and struggle with fractions and decimals, theoretically because proportions do not abide by the same principles as more familiar whole number quantities. The present study examines individual differences in proportional reasoning and whole number representations and tests a prediction for a nonlinearity in the development of relations between the two. Pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students completed a battery of computerized tasks, including a proportional reasoning task, “which is more?” and “which is #?” whole number comparison tasks, and symbolic and nonsymbolic numerical line-estimation tasks. The results indicate that though younger children’s performance on …
