Is The Maxwell Construction Correct In Predicting The Van Der Waals Fluid's Vapor Pressure?, Carl W. David

Chemistry Education Materials

The Maxwell construction yields a pressure value which traditionally been associated with the vapor pressure. Here, the question is answered whether or not the two phases represented by the construct are indeed in equilibrium.

On Geometric Problems Involving Schwarzschild Manifolds, Armando Jose Cabrera Pacheco Apr 2016

On Geometric Problems Involving Schwarzschild Manifolds, Armando Jose Cabrera Pacheco

Open Access Dissertations

A spatial Schwarzschild manifold of mass m is an asymptotically flat manifold that represents the {t=0} spacelike slice of the Schwarzschild spacetime, a spacetime that models the gravitational field surrounding a spherically symmetric non-rotating massive body. The Riemannian Penrose inequality establishes an upper bound for the ADM mass of an asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature in terms of the volume of its outermost apparent horizon; remarkably, this inequality is rigid and equality is achieved for Schwarzschild manifolds. Our main results are that any metric g of positive scalar curvature on the 3-sphere can be realized as the induced …

Mapping Temperate Vegetation Climate Adaptation Variability Using Normalized Land Surface Phenology, Liang Liang, Mark D. Schwartz, Xiaoyang Zhang Apr 2016

Mapping Temperate Vegetation Climate Adaptation Variability Using Normalized Land Surface Phenology, Liang Liang, Mark D. Schwartz, Xiaoyang Zhang

GSCE Faculty Publications

Climate influences geographic differences of vegetation phenology through both contemporary and historical variability. The latter effect is embodied in vegetation heterogeneity underlain by spatially varied genotype and species compositions tied to climatic adaptation. Such long-term climatic effects are difficult to map and therefore often neglected in evaluating spatially explicit phenological responses to climate change. In this study we demonstrate a way to indirectly infer the portion of land surface phenology variation that is potentially contributed by underlying genotypic differences across space. The method undertaken normalized remotely sensed vegetation start-of-season (or greenup onset) with a cloned plants-based phenological model. As the …

The User Attribution Problem And The Challenge Of Persistent Surveillance Of User Activity In Complex Networks, Claudio Taglienti, James D. Cannady Jr. Apr 2016

The User Attribution Problem And The Challenge Of Persistent Surveillance Of User Activity In Complex Networks, Claudio Taglienti, James D. Cannady Jr.

CCE Faculty Articles

In telecommunication networks, the user attribution problem refers to the challenge faced in recognizing communication traffic as belonging to a given user when information needed to identify the user is missing. This problem becomes more difficult to tackle as users move across many mobile networks (complex networks) owned and operated by different providers. The traditional approach of using the source IP address as a tracking identifier does not work when used to identify mobile users. Recent efforts to address this problem by exclusively relying on web browsing behavior to identify users, brought to light the challenges of solutions which try …

Homeowners Risk Averse Reaction to the Recession
By Tyler Box with support from Dr. David Lehr (ECON 318)

There has been significant statistical research done on the effectiveness of offering home warranties on homes being sold in the housing market. The current research has focused on their impact on price and time-on-market and typically find that the inclusion of a home warranty is not statistically significant to either variable. This study and dataset differs from those of the past because with it the changing value of home warranties can be captured by comparing homes from both before and after the …

A Comparison Of Qualitative And Quantitative Data Collection Techniques To Assess Mapping Accuracy In The Florida Keys, Ian K. Rodericks Apr 2016

A Comparison Of Qualitative And Quantitative Data Collection Techniques To Assess Mapping Accuracy In The Florida Keys, Ian K. Rodericks

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Benthic habitat maps provide the spatial framework for many research science and management activities in coastal areas such as coral-reefs. Accuracy, the degree to which information on a map matches true or accepted values, of benthic habitat maps is important because often times the map will be used in decision-making processes about how we manage our marine resources. It is critical that some measure, such as the accuracy, of the map be known in order to give a sense of how the overall map portrays the seascape. This study compared the accuracy in the following map classes; major structure, major …

Theoretical Modeling Of The Effect Of Polymer Chain Immobilization Rates On Holographic Recording In Photopolymers, Dana Mackey, Paul O'Reilly, Izabela Naydenova Apr 2016

Theoretical Modeling Of The Effect Of Polymer Chain Immobilization Rates On Holographic Recording In Photopolymers, Dana Mackey, Paul O'Reilly, Izabela Naydenova

Articles

This paper introduces an improved mathematical model for holographic grating formation in an acrylamide-based photopolymer, which consists of partial differential equations derived from physical laws. The model is based on the two-way diffusion theory of \cite{izabela}, which assumes short polymer chains are free to diffuse, and generalizes a similar model presented in \cite{josab} by introducing an immobilization rate governed by chain growth and cross-linking. Numerical simulations were carried out in order to investigate the behaviour of the photopolymer system for short and long exposures, with particular emphasis on the effect of recording parameters (such as illumination frequency and intensity), as …

Method For Determining Time-Resolved Heat Transfer Coefficient And Adiabatic Effectiveness Waveforms With Unsteady Film Cooling, James L. Rutledge, Jonathan F. Mccall Apr 2016

Method For Determining Time-Resolved Heat Transfer Coefficient And Adiabatic Effectiveness Waveforms With Unsteady Film Cooling, James L. Rutledge, Jonathan F. Mccall

AFIT Patents

A new method for determining heat transfer coefficient (h) and adiabatic effectiveness (η) waveforms h(t) and η(t) from a single test uses a novel inverse heat transfer methodology to use surface temperature histories obtained using prior art approaches to approximate the h(t) and η(t) waveforms. The method best curve fits the data to a pair of truncated Fourier series.

Edge Windowing Of Ofdm Based Systems, Alphan Sahin, Huseyin Arslan Apr 2016

Edge Windowing Of Ofdm Based Systems, Alphan Sahin, Huseyin Arslan

USF Patents

Various methods and systems are provided for edge windowing of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In one example, among others, a method includes obtaining an edge windowing portion by reducing a cyclic prefix size for a quantity of edge subcarriers in an OFDM symbol and reducing side lobes by applying a windowing function to the edge subcarriers. In another example, a device includes a separator capable of dividing subcarriers of an OFDM symbol into first and second subcarrier groups, a first CP adder capable of obtaining a windowing portion by adjusting a cyclic prefix size of the first subcarrier …

Concepts About Sedimentology And Stratigraphy In Undergraduate Geoscience Courses, Bailey Z. Kreager Apr 2016

Concepts About Sedimentology And Stratigraphy In Undergraduate Geoscience Courses, Bailey Z. Kreager

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This two-part study examines sedimentologic and stratigraphic concepts in undergraduate geoscience courses. The first part seeks to identify the various types of interactive engagement strategies used in undergraduate science courses, how they are used and in what fields. It also looks at areas in which the geosciences have excelled in interactive engagement strategies. Published studies describing interactive engagement strategies in college-level courses were collected and coded, which identified six emergent types of interactive engagement strategies: (1) Polling, (2) Full-Class Discussion and Activities, (3) In-Class Group Work, (4) Out-Of-Class Group Work, (5) Online Work, and (6) Other types. Interactive engagement strategies …
