The Impact Of Leadership On School Culture And Student Achievement, Matthew Joseph Piotrowsky
The Impact Of Leadership On School Culture And Student Achievement, Matthew Joseph Piotrowsky
All Dissertations
This study examined the predictive relationship of school leadership on school culture. Given the demands of standards based education reform, the goal of every school is student achievement. The literature review examines the previous studies showing significance of leadership on culture, leadership on teacher retention, and leadership and school culture on student achievement. This study uses the School Culture Survey developed by Gruenert and Valentine (1998). It is a 35-item Likert-scale survey defining six variables; Collaborative Leadership, Teacher Collaboration, Professional Development, Unity of Purpose, Collegial Support, and Learning Partnerships. The survey was distributed electronically to an upstate South Carolina school …
Wide Area Signals Based Damping Controllers For Multimachine Power Systems, Ke Tang
Wide Area Signals Based Damping Controllers For Multimachine Power Systems, Ke Tang
All Dissertations
Nowadays, electric power systems are stressed and pushed toward their stability margins due to increasing load demand and growing penetration levels of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Due to insufficient damping in power systems, oscillations are likely to arise during transient and dynamic conditions. To avoid undesirable power system states such as tripping of transmission lines, generation sources, and loads, eventually leading to cascaded outages and blackouts, intelligent coordinated control of a power system and its elements, from a global and local perspective, is needed. The research performed in this dissertation is focused on intelligent analysis …
Design, Modeling And Control Of A Thermal Management System For Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Xinran (William) Tao
Design, Modeling And Control Of A Thermal Management System For Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Xinran (William) Tao
All Dissertations
Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology has evolved in the last two decades to become economically feasible for mass produced automobiles. With the integration of a lithium battery pack and electric motors, HEVs offer a significantly higher fuel efficiency than traditional vehicles that are driven solely by an internal combustion engine. However, the additional HEV components also introduce new challenges for the powertrain thermal management system design. In addition to the common internal combustion engine, the battery pack, the generator(s), as well as the electric motor(s) are now widely applied in the HEVs and have become new heat sources and they …

Light Echoes And Late-Time Emissions Of Type Ia Supernovae, Dina Drozdov
Light Echoes And Late-Time Emissions Of Type Ia Supernovae, Dina Drozdov
All Dissertations
Type Ia supernovae have many applications in astronomy, yet with fundamental properties still not fully understood, new methods for investigating the environment of a supernova need to be developed. A light echo is produced from the scattering of light from a bright source and can be used to analyze the dust in the vicinity of the supernova and learn invaluable information about the source. These techniques can put constraints on explosion and progenitor models. Although light echo detections from Type Ia supernovae are rare, with only seven total extragalactic detections, this could be due to the lack of thorough late-epoch …
Administrative Best Practices To Influence Culture In A Rural Middle School Of Poverty, John David Nixon
Administrative Best Practices To Influence Culture In A Rural Middle School Of Poverty, John David Nixon
All Dissertations
Studies have shown a direct correlation between positive school culture and increases in student achievement (Bulach et al, 1995; Goddard et al, 2000; Kaplan & Owings, 2013; McCarley et al, 2014; Thapa et al, 2013; Whitaker, 2001). The literature also suggests that the culture within a school can be positively impacted through effective leadership (Hallinger, et al, 2014), but the literature available for rural schools in regards to student achievement and culture is limited (Arnold, et al, 2005 and Lee, 2001). This purpose of this mixed-method case study is to identify what practices a principal employed to create a change …

Manipulating Cardiovascular Cellular Interactions And Mechanics: A Multidimensional And Multimodal Approach, Aesha Yogesh Desai
Manipulating Cardiovascular Cellular Interactions And Mechanics: A Multidimensional And Multimodal Approach, Aesha Yogesh Desai
All Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation is to better understand cellular mechanics across length scales for the development of computational models of tissue behavior. To this end, we had two major approaches, multidimensional and multimodal. Firstly, to use a model that better mimics in vivo like cellular environment, microtissue (spheroid) cell culture system was used to study cell mechanics. Secondly, a novel technique was designed to study single cell mechanics in multiple dimensions. Cell mechanical properties are directly related to the composition and organization of the cytoskeleton, which is physically coupled to neighboring cells through adherens junctions and to extracellular matrix …

General Approach For Combining Diverse Rare Variant Association Tests Provides Improved Robustness Across A Wider Range Of Genetic Architectures, Brian Greco, Allison Hainline, Jaron Arbet, Kelsey Grinde, Alejandra Benitez, Nathan L. Tintle
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
The widespread availability of genome sequencing data made possible by way of next-generation technologies has yielded a flood of different gene-based rare variant association tests. Most of these tests have been published because they have superior power for particular genetic architectures. However, for applied researchers it is challenging to know which test to choose in practice when little is known a priori about genetic architecture. Recently, tests have been proposed which combine two particular individual tests (one burden and one variance components) to minimize power loss while improving robustness to a wider range of genetic architectures. In our analysis we …
The Complete Structure Of Linear And Nonlinear Deformations Of Frames On A Hilbert Space, Devanshu Agrawal
The Complete Structure Of Linear And Nonlinear Deformations Of Frames On A Hilbert Space, Devanshu Agrawal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A frame is a possibly linearly dependent set of vectors in a Hilbert space that facilitates the decomposition and reconstruction of vectors. A Parseval frame is a frame that acts as its own dual frame. A Gabor frame comprises all translations and phase modulations of an appropriate window function. We show that the space of all frames on a Hilbert space indexed by a common measure space can be fibrated into orbits under the action of invertible linear deformations and that any maximal set of unitarily inequivalent Parseval frames is a complete set of representatives of the orbits. We show …

The Experiences Of First-Generation Women From South-Central Appalachia Who Have Obtained Their Doctorate Degree In Educational Leadership, Teressa Ann Dobbs
The Experiences Of First-Generation Women From South-Central Appalachia Who Have Obtained Their Doctorate Degree In Educational Leadership, Teressa Ann Dobbs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to investigate the experiences of first-generation women from South-Central Appalachia who completed a doctorate degree in educational leadership (EdD). Research indicates that nearly one third of doctoral recipients reported being first-generation, and the majority of these students concentrated in certain academic areas such as education. Furthermore, the literature suggests that there is a strong correlation between educational achievement levels and family background as well as cultural and geographic factors. While the amount of literature on minority groups has increased over the past 20 years, literature on the people and culture of Appalachia is limited. When first-generation …

Structural-Symbolic Translation Fluency: Reliability, Validity, And Usability, Matt C. Hoskins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Standardized formative mathematics assessments typically fail to capture the depth of current standards and curricula. Consequently, these assessments demonstrate limited utility for informing the instructional implementation choices of teachers. This problem is particularly salient as it relates to the mathematical problem solving process. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric characteristics of Structural-Symbolic Translation Fluency, a curriculum-based measure (CBM) of mathematical problem solving. The development of the assessment was based on previous research describing the cognitive process of translation (Mayer, 2002) as well as mathematical concept development at the quantitative, structural, and symbolic levels (Dehaene, …
Takens Theorem With Singular Spectrum Analysis Applied To Noisy Time Series, Thomas K. Torku
Takens Theorem With Singular Spectrum Analysis Applied To Noisy Time Series, Thomas K. Torku
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The evolution of big data has led to financial time series becoming increasingly complex, noisy, non-stationary and nonlinear. Takens theorem can be used to analyze and forecast nonlinear time series, but even small amounts of noise can hopelessly corrupt a Takens approach. In contrast, Singular Spectrum Analysis is an excellent tool for both forecasting and noise reduction. Fortunately, it is possible to combine the Takens approach with Singular Spectrum analysis (SSA), and in fact, estimation of key parameters in Takens theorem is performed with Singular Spectrum Analysis. In this thesis, we combine the denoising abilities of SSA with the Takens …

The overall goal of this research is to synthesize two different monomers for proton exchange membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells. Such monomers are proposed to be polymerized to improve the efficiency and compatibility of electrodes and electrolytes in PEM fuel cells.
The first target is to synthesize 4-diazonium-3-fluoro PFSI zwitterionic monomer. Three steps were carried out in the lab. First one was the ammonolysis of 3-fluoro-4-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride. Second reaction was the bromination of Nafion monomer. The next coupling reaction, between brominated Nafion monomer and the 3-fluoro-4-nitrobenzenesulfonamide, was failed. The obstacles involve the harsh reaction condition and troublesome purification procedure.
The second …
Strategies Of Balancing: Regulation Of Posture As A Complex Phenomenon, Allison Leich Hilbun
Strategies Of Balancing: Regulation Of Posture As A Complex Phenomenon, Allison Leich Hilbun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The complexity of the interface between the muscular system and the nervous system is still elusive. We investigated how the neuromuscular system functions and how it is influenced by various perturbations. Postural stability was selected as the model system, because this system provides complex output, which could indicate underlying mechanisms and feedback loops of the neuromuscular system. We hypothesized that aging, physical pain, and mental and physical perturbations affect balancing strategy, and based on these observations, we constructed a model that simulates many aspects of the neuromuscular system. Our results show that aging changes the control strategy of balancing from …

Neighborhood-Restricted Achromatic Colorings Of Graphs, James D. Chandler Sr.
Neighborhood-Restricted Achromatic Colorings Of Graphs, James D. Chandler Sr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A (closed) neighborhood-restricted 2-achromatic-coloring of a graph G is an assignment of colors to the vertices of G such that no more than two colors are assigned in any closed neighborhood. In other words, for every vertex v in G, the vertex v and its neighbors are in at most two different color classes. The 2-achromatic number is defined as the maximum number of colors in any 2-achromatic-coloring of G. We study the 2-achromatic number. In particular, we improve a known upper bound and characterize the extremal graphs for some other known bounds.

Presently, there are concerns that buildings in the USA under-performs in terms of energy efficiency when compared with the original design specifications. A significant percentage of the energy loss in these buildings is associated with the building’s envelope. This study provides a qualitative and analytical understanding of the R-value, which indicates the thermal performance of the elements that make up a building envelope. Infrared thermography is used as a methodology to assess the thermal performance of envelopes of ten buildings on East Tennessee State University Campus. A Fluke Ti25 infrared hand-held camera and a DJI phantom-2 drone mounted with FLIR …
Global Supply Sets In Graphs, Christian G. Moore
Global Supply Sets In Graphs, Christian G. Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For a graph G=(V,E), a set S⊆V is a global supply set if every vertex v∈V\S has at least one neighbor, say u, in S such that u has at least as many neighbors in S as v has in V \S. The global supply number is the minimum cardinality of a global supply set, denoted γgs (G). We introduce global supply sets and determine the global supply number for selected families of graphs. Also, we give bounds on the global supply number for general graphs, trees, and grid graphs.

Finally, the distribution and paleoecology of the listed genera allows an interpretation of …
Synthesis Of Diazonium (Perfluoroalkyl) Arylsulfonimide Monomers From Perfluoro (3-Oxapent-4-Ene) Sulfonyl Fluoride For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Faisal Ibrahim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two diazonium perfluoroalkyl arylsulfonimide (PFSI) zwitterionic monomers, 4-diazonium perfluoro(3-oxapent-4-ene)benzenesulfonimide (I) and 4-(trifluoromethyl)-2-diazonium perfluoro(3-oxapent-4-ene)benzenesulfonimide (II) have been synthesized from perfluoro(3-oxapent-4-ene) sulfonyl fluoride (POPF) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. PFSI polymers are proposed as new electrolytes due to their better thermal stability, inertness to electrochemical conditions, and lower susceptibility to oxidative degradation and dehydration. For a better integration between the electrode and the electrolyte, the PFSI polymers are expected to be grafted onto the carbon electrode via the diazonium moiety.
All the reaction intermediates and the final product were characterized with 1H NMR, 19F NMR and IR …
Consensus Model Of Families Of Images Using Tensor-Based Fourier Analysis, Joel A. Shelton
Consensus Model Of Families Of Images Using Tensor-Based Fourier Analysis, Joel A. Shelton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A consensus model is a statistical approach that uses a family of signals or in our case, a family of images to generate a predictive model. In this thesis, we consider a family of images that are represented as tensors. In particular, our images are (2,0)-tensors. The consensus model is produced by utilizing the quantum Fourier transform of a family of images as tensors to transform images to images. We write a quantum Fourier transform in the numerical computation library for Python, known as Theano to produce the consensus spectrum. From the consensus spectrum, we produce the consensus model via …
Immobilization Of Heteropolyacids In Silica Gel, Opeyemi Adetola
Immobilization Of Heteropolyacids In Silica Gel, Opeyemi Adetola
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Silica gels containing incorporated heteropolyacids (HPAs) were synthesized in acidic media by co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with phosphotungstic or phosphomolybdic acids using sol-gel technique. Effect of the synthesis conditions on their structure and morphology was studied. Yields of modified materials were some lower as compared to non-modified silica gels. All materials were mesoporous but contained micropores in their structures. Presence of bands of Keggin’s structures in FT-IR spectra along with absence of XRD patterns of crystalline HPAs confirmed their fine incorporation into silica network. Particle sizes of modified materials were 800-1100 nm excepting for W-containing sample obtained with trimethylstearylammonium chloride. …
