Prediction Of Tonal Acoustic Radiation Due To Feedback-Loop Resonant Interactions In Transitional Airfoils, Seyyed Saman Salehian
Prediction Of Tonal Acoustic Radiation Due To Feedback-Loop Resonant Interactions In Transitional Airfoils, Seyyed Saman Salehian
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The objective to this work is to employ the surface integral methods to study the far-field noise propagation from the flow acoustic resonant interactions of the transitional airfoil. The Potential-Theoretic Method (PTM) as an advancement to traditional Kirchhoff methods is presented. The PTM eliminated the need to calculate the normal derivatives of pressure and an arbitrary Kirchhoff surface can be employed. The numerical procedure to implement the PTM is fairly simple. The formulation and physical assumptions of the approach is reviewed, and the numerical procedure is implemented. Furthermore, the two dimensional formulation of the Ffowcs Williams - Hawkings (FW-H) equation …
Real-Time Optimization Based Power Flow Controller For Energy Consumption And Emissions Reduction In A Parallel Hev, Abdulla Abdulaziz Karmustaji
Real-Time Optimization Based Power Flow Controller For Energy Consumption And Emissions Reduction In A Parallel Hev, Abdulla Abdulaziz Karmustaji
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
As the regulations on the fuel economy and emissions standards become higher, Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) are gaining more popularity in the market. HEVs improvements in fuel economy and emissions strongly depend on the energy management strategy. An optimization based power flow controller is presented in this thesis to find the appropriate power split between the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and the electric motor to reduce the energy consumption and emissions. However, emissions were not taken into consideration in results due to lack of reliable results. A basic power flow controller was built to compare to the optimization based controller. …
Gender In Stem: An Intersectional And Interdisciplinary Feminist Ethnography, Michelle Chouinard
Gender In Stem: An Intersectional And Interdisciplinary Feminist Ethnography, Michelle Chouinard
Honors College Theses
While contextualizing the history of women in educational spheres, it is no surprise to learn that women have faced significant obstacles in sciences and mathematics since the inception of higher education. In her revolutionary challenge of patriarchal historical narratives surrounding knowledge production, historian Londa Schiebinger’s Has Feminism Changed Science? (1999) demonstrates that women have long been influential in the sciences. Christine de Pizan was documenting contributions made by women to the arts and sciences beginning in 1405; however, widespread acknowledgement of women in the sciences did not appear until the dawn of the 20th century, around the time of the …
Staphylococcal Nuclease And Ubiquitin Local Folding Energies And Rates Using Peps-Hdx-Esi-Ms, Julie Rhee
Staphylococcal Nuclease And Ubiquitin Local Folding Energies And Rates Using Peps-Hdx-Esi-Ms, Julie Rhee
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this study, Protein Equilibrium Population Snapshot Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (PEPS-HDX-ESI-MS) was applied to study the local regions of model proteins, staphylococcal nuclease and ubiquitin. The hydrogen deuterium exchange (HDX) has become a key technique for studying the structural and dynamic aspects of proteins in solution. This technique creates a rapid exchange between all of the exchangeable hydrogen ions with deuterium when the protein is exposed to a solvent. The PEPS method is an equilibrium-based method used to determine the populations of the closed native and open denatured states of a protein. By combining the applications of …
Influence Of Cholesterol On Single Arginine-Containing Transmembrane Helical Peptides, Jordana K. Thibado
Influence Of Cholesterol On Single Arginine-Containing Transmembrane Helical Peptides, Jordana K. Thibado
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
An essential component of animal cells, cholesterol exerts significant influence on the physical properties of the cell membrane and in turn, its constituents. One such category of constituents, the membrane proteins, are responsible for diverse and essential biological functions and often contain polar amino acids. Although sparse within the hydrophobic interior of lipid-bilayer membranes, polar amino acid residues are highly conserved and may play pivotal roles in determining specific structural and functional properties of key proteins. To gain greater understanding of the lipid membrane environment, and more broadly, cellular function, a model peptide framework termed “GWALP23” (acetyl-GGALWLALALAL12AL14 …

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between instructional environment and student engagement during reading instruction. Environment is composed of three key elements: teacher attributes, instructional methods, and the physical classroom setting (Blair, Rupley, & Nichols, 2007; De Naeghel, Van Keer, Vansteenkiste, & Rosseel, 2012; Guthrie, Hoa, Wigfield, Tonks, & Perencevich, 2006; Housand & Reis, 2008). This study examined a first, second, and third grade classroom in one East Tennessee school. Qualitative data was collected using a combination of instructional observation and teacher interviews in order to examine existing practices for successfully engaging young readers. Teachers for …
Acceleration Of Ddscat Computation By Parallelization On A Supercomputer, Manoj V. Seeram
Acceleration Of Ddscat Computation By Parallelization On A Supercomputer, Manoj V. Seeram
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The DDSCAT software is enabled for use of MPI or OpenMP to distribute calculation of different particle orientations amongst multiple processors on a high performance system. Run times for these simulations have been tested to take hours or days however and simulating varying orientations is not always necessary. If a simulation with only one particle orientation is submitted, DDSCAT could still potentially parallelize the simulation by wavelength calculations but it is unknown if this is the case. In this paper, we will be (i) quantifying the reduction in computation time that MPI provides relative to an equivalent MPI disabled simulation …
Validation Of An Internal Camera Based Volume Determination System For Triaxial Testing, Leah D. Miramontes
Validation Of An Internal Camera Based Volume Determination System For Triaxial Testing, Leah D. Miramontes
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Accurate strain and volume measurements are critical to phase relationships and strength determination for saturated and unsaturated soils. In recent years, laboratory-based photographic techniques of monitoring soil specimens have become more common. These techniques have been used to reconstruct 3D models and to determine strain and volumetric changes of triaxial specimens. A new technique that utilized digital photographs of the soil specimen, captured from within a triaxial testing cell, was utilized. Photographs were processed using photogrammetry software to reconstruct 3D models of the soil specimens. By placing camera equipment within the cell, the technique eliminated the need to account for …
A Bayesian Method For Cluster Detection With Application To Five Cancer Sites In Puget Sound, Albert Y. Kim, Jon Wakefield
A Bayesian Method For Cluster Detection With Application To Five Cancer Sites In Puget Sound, Albert Y. Kim, Jon Wakefield
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Cluster detection is an important public health endeavor and in this paper we describe and apply a recently developed Bayesian method. Commonly-used approaches are based on so-called scan statistics and suffer from a number of difficulties including how to choose a level of significance and how to deal with the possibility of multiple clusters. The basis of our model is to partition the study region into a set of areas which are either “null” or “non-null”, the latter corresponding to clusters (excess risk) or anti-clusters (reduced risk). We demonstrate the Bayesian method and compare with a popular existing approach, using …
Investigation And Implementation Of A Lifting Line Theory To Predict Propeller Performance, Jonathan R. Eastridge
Investigation And Implementation Of A Lifting Line Theory To Predict Propeller Performance, Jonathan R. Eastridge
Senior Honors Theses
Numerous hydrodynamic theories may be used to predict the performance of marine propellers. The goal of this thesis is to investigate and implement a lifting line theory as a program written in FORTRAN and to test its capabilities on some Wageningen B-Series propellers. Special attention is given to the validation of the routines involved in the implementation of the theory. Difficulties were experienced in obtaining results that accurately reflect the published experimental results, and some discussion is included regarding possibilities for the sources of these errors. Also discussed are the results of other lifting line codes and their respective differences …

Rainbow Matchings And Hamilton Cycles In Random Graphs, Deepak Bal, Alan Frieze
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Let HPn,m,k be drawn uniformly from all m-edge, k-uniform, k-partite hypergraphs where each part of the partition is a disjoint copy of [n]. We let HPn,m,k(κ) be an edge colored version, where we color each edge randomly from one of κ colors. We show that if κ=n and m=Knlogn where K is sufficiently large then w.h.p. there is a rainbow colored perfect matching. I.e. a perfect matching in which every edge has a different color. We also show that if n is even and m=Knlogn where K is sufficiently large then w.h.p. there is a rainbow colored Hamilton cycle in …

This research introduces a heat transfer enhancement method for porous beds of either ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials. Throughout this work, it is shown that applying magnetic fields, not only enhances the heat transfer rate in particle beds but also improves hydrogenation properties of lanthanum nickel. The first section of the work is focused on heat transfer in iron oxide beds under magnetism. This stage studies effect of different magnetic field configurations and intensities on conduction improvement. The second phase of the work, studies the effect of utilizing magnetic fields on hydriding properties of a selected metal hydride. Experimentation has proven …
Community Renewable Energy: The Potential For Energy Generation On Public Land In Cedar City, Utah, Betsy Byrne
Community Renewable Energy: The Potential For Energy Generation On Public Land In Cedar City, Utah, Betsy Byrne
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
As the world's population rises and becomes increasingly more urbanized, there is a greater demand on our resources. Current energy production practices are based on resources with finite supplies and are associated with environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas and particulate emissions, water resource use, and resource extraction. In contrast, renewable energy production is based on free, continually replenished sources with relatively few environmental impacts. Distributed renewable energy generation involves producing energy close to the point of consumption. The distributed generation model increases energy autonomy at the local level.
Distributed renewable energy generation is fairly common at point of use. …

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The rapid divergence of male genitalia is a preeminent evolutionary pattern. This rapid divergence is especially striking in the baculum, a bone that occurs in the penis of many mammalian species. Closely related species often display diverse baculum morphology where no other morphological differences can be discerned. While this fundamental pattern of evolution has been appreciated at the level of gross morphology, nearly nothing is known about the genetic basis of size and shape divergence. Quantifying the genetic basis of baculum size and shape variation has been difficult because these structures generally lack obvious landmarks, so comparing them in three …
The Impact Of Governance On Economic Growth: The Case Of Middle Eastwen And North African Countries, Noha Emara, And I-Ming Chiu
The Impact Of Governance On Economic Growth: The Case Of Middle Eastwen And North African Countries, Noha Emara, And I-Ming Chiu
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
The main goal of this paper is to evaluate the impact of governance on economic growth using a group of 188 countries. Although our main focus is on the 21 Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries, our findings can be applied to the other countries as well. We create a “composite governance index” (CGI) that summarizes the existing six governance measurements in the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI), using the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) method. The first principal component derived from the WGIs explains as much as 81% of the variations in the original six WGI measurements. We then use …
Lipschitz Geometry Of Banach And Metric Spaces, Patrick Biermann
Lipschitz Geometry Of Banach And Metric Spaces, Patrick Biermann
Dissertations - ALL
We will investigate Lipschitz and Hölder continuous maps between a Banach space X and its dual space X^*, the space of continuous linear functionals. The existence of these maps is related to the smoothness of the norm of the space and isomorphic invariants called type and cotype will play a central role as well. The main result will be answering a question asked by W.B. Johnson about the isomorphic classification of Hilbert spaces.
Next we will find bounds on the distortion of subsets of infinite dimensional Hilbert space. This concept compares the extrinsic straight line distance inherited from the underlying …
Effects Of Substrate Stiffness On Bacterial Biofilm Formation, Fangchao Song
Effects Of Substrate Stiffness On Bacterial Biofilm Formation, Fangchao Song
Dissertations - ALL
Biofilms are communities of microbial cells attached on surfaces and embedded in a self-produced extracellular matrix comprised of polysaccharides, DNA, and proteins. Biofilms of pathogenic bacteria cause serious chronic infections due to high tolerance to antibiotics and host immune systems compared to their planktonic compartments. Biofilm formation is known to be influenced by many properties of substrate materials, such as surface chemistry, hydrophobicity, roughness, topography, and charge. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of substrate stiffness. In this study, Escherichia coli RP437 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 were used as model strains to investigate the early stage …
Elucidating The Electronic Origins Of Intermolecular Forces In Crystalline Solids, Michael Thomas Ruggiero
Elucidating The Electronic Origins Of Intermolecular Forces In Crystalline Solids, Michael Thomas Ruggiero
Dissertations - ALL
It is not possible to study almost any physical system without considering intermolecular forces (IMFs), no matter how insignificant they may appear relative to other energetic factors. Countless studies have shown that IMFs are responsible for governing a wide variety of physical properties, but often the atomic-origins of such interactions elude experimental detection. A considerable amount of work throughout the course of this research was therefore placed on using quantum mechanical simulations, specifically density functional theory (DFT), to calculate the electronic properties of solid-materials. The goal of these calculations was a better understanding of the precise origins of interatomic energies, …
Developing Iodine Proxies For Oceanic Oxygenation Conditions During Greenhouse Episodes, Xiaoli Zhou
Developing Iodine Proxies For Oceanic Oxygenation Conditions During Greenhouse Episodes, Xiaoli Zhou
Dissertations - ALL
Anthropogenic global warming affects marine ecosystems in complex ways, and declining ocean oxygenation is a growing concern. Forecasting the geographical and bathymetric extent, rate, and intensity of future deoxygenation and its ecological effects, however, remains highly challenging because of the complex feedbacks in the climate-ocean-biota system. Global warming lowers the solubility of oxygen in the ocean and drives an enhanced hydrological cycle with increased nutrient delivery to the oceans, leading to increases in organic production, the degradation of which causes a further decrease in dissolved oxygen. In extreme cases in the geological past, this trajectory has led to strong marine …
Fretting Corrosion Of Cocrmo Alloy Biomaterials: Instrumentation Development, Heredity Integral Modeling And The Effect Of Frequency, Zhe Li
Dissertations - ALL
Mechanically assisted crevice corrosion, a process of corrosion that generally occurs in joint replacements of the hip and knee, is a major problem for metallic biomaterials. Though extensive research has already been undertaken, the basic concepts of fretting corrosion including prediction of the instantaneous current response during fretting corrosion, still needs to be understood in a systematic form. The aim of this study is to present the mechanical and electrochemical elements of a model pertaining to the process of fretting crevice corrosion and the prediction of fretting corrosion current transients. The influence of sliding speed on fretting corrosion severity of …

Abstract: Cytochrome P450 CYP3A4 is the main drug-metabolizing enzyme in the human liver, being responsible for oxidation of 50% of all pharmaceuticals metabolized by human P450 enzymes. Possessing a large substrate binding pocket, it can simultaneously bind several substrate molecules and often exhibits a complex pattern of drug–drug interactions. In order to better understand structural and functional aspects of binding of multiple substrate molecules to CYP3A4 we used resonance Raman and UV–VIS spectroscopy to document the effects of binding of synthetic testosterone dimers of different configurations, cis-TST2 and trans-TST2. We directly demonstrate that the binding …
Crystallization Behavior Of Waxes, Sarbojeet Jana
Crystallization Behavior Of Waxes, Sarbojeet Jana
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Partially hydrogenated oil (PHO) has no longer GRAS status. However, PHO is one of the important ingredients in bakery and confectionary industry and therefore the food industry is seeking for an alternative fat to replace PHO. Waxes have shown promise to fulfill that demand because of its easy availability and cheap in price. Waxes with high melting points (> 40 °C) help in the crystallization process when mixed with low melting point oils. A crystalline network is formed in this wax/oil crystallization process where liquid oil is entrapped in wax crystal network. A new material is formed which is neither …

Crustal Architecture Of The Snake River Plain, Idaho, Through Geochemical Investigation Of Crustal Sill And Shallow Subvolcanic Xenoliths, Douglas James Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Snake River Plain (SRP) in southern Idaho is one of the most well-preserved examples of continent-hotspot interaction available today. Geophysical studies have imaged a feature ~10 km thick at the base of the upper crust. This feature, termed the “mid-crustal sill complex” is likely a layered mafic intrusion. The study of layered mafic intrusions is important because it provides a link between deep plutonic processes and shallow volcanic processes. Investigation of the mid crustal sill complex will provide better understanding of the evolutionary process of SRP basalts.
This thesis investigates three xenoliths sampled from the Kimama drill core collected …
Oxidative Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage Reactions Of Metal Flavonolato And Chlorodiketonate Complexes, Sushma L. Saraf
Oxidative Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage Reactions Of Metal Flavonolato And Chlorodiketonate Complexes, Sushma L. Saraf
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The research presented in this dissertation focuses on the oxidative cleavage of chemical bonds between two carbon atoms. This type of reactivity is of significant interest due to its potential application toward the development of ways to convert chemical feed stock into useful products such as pharmaceuticals, polymers and fuels in an environmentally benign and cost-efficient manner. Reactions that cleave specific carbon-carbon bonds, are catalyzed by earth-abundant metals, and involve O2 as the terminal oxidant, are of particular interest.
Our strategy has been to study the oxidative carbon-carbon bond cleavage reactivity of metal complexes containing components similar to structures …
Synergistic Timing Speculation For Multi-Threaded Programs, Atif Yasin
Synergistic Timing Speculation For Multi-Threaded Programs, Atif Yasin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Timing speculation is a promising approach to increase the processor performance and energy efficiency. Under timing speculation, an integrated circuit is allowed to operate at a speed faster than the rated speed specified by its vendor. However, doing so might result in an incorrect execution. Consequently, as long as the processor is equipped with an error detection and recovery mechanism, its performance can be increased and/or energy consumption reduced beyond that achievable by any other conventional operation.
While many past works have dealt with timing speculation within a single core, in this work, a new direction is being uncovered by …
Impact Of Mass And Bond Energy Difference And Interface Defects On Thermal Boundary Conductance, Changjin Choi
Impact Of Mass And Bond Energy Difference And Interface Defects On Thermal Boundary Conductance, Changjin Choi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many portions of energy generated in the U.S. are not used and take the form of wasted heat due to a poor heat transfer efficiency. This fact leads research communities to focus on thermoelectrics as a means for using waste heat through direct thermal to electrical energy conversion. One way to enhance thermoelectric efficiency is to reduce thermal conductivity through nanostructuring. In nanostructures, understanding energy transport across the interface of two materials is important because interfaces dominate the resistance to overall thermal transport of the system and can be described by thermal boundary conductance (TBC). Also of note, an understanding …

Effects Of A Self-Management Procedure Using Student Feedback On Staff Members' Use Of Praise In An Out-Of-School Time Program, Cade T. Charlton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Out-of-school time (OST) programs are under increasing pressure to improve student achievement. However, OST program administrators face a number of challenges to improving program effectiveness including inconsistent student participation, inexperienced staff members, and a lack of high-quality professional development. OST program administrators can address these challenges by implementing staff development practices that encourage the use of effective instructional strategies.
Specific praise is a simple and effective instructional strategy that has been linked to improved student engagement, enhanced academic achievement, and stronger student-teacher relationships. Unfortunately, there have been very few studies examining the effects of interventions designed to increase OST staff …
