Playing With Fire: California Homeowners Risk High Insurance Costs Or Losing Homes To Climate Change Disasters, Emily Serleth May 2025

Playing With Fire: California Homeowners Risk High Insurance Costs Or Losing Homes To Climate Change Disasters, Emily Serleth

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

California should continue to further the policy of protecting generational homeowners’ right to their property. To do this, insurance rates should be set in a way that avoids unfair premium increases that violate Proposition 103 and unfairly burden consumers. Utilizing CAT models will increase the cost of home insurance premiums due to overestimations of risk, enable bias on the part of insurance companies, and promote a lack of public scrutiny for insurance rates. This creates a confiscatory rate, which violates Proposition 103 and the California Constitution.

Generational homeowners should not be forced to adopt the FAIR plan just to maintain …

On The Development And Application Of Short Design Events For The Prediction Of Extreme Responses Of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, T. Tosdevin, S. Brown, F. Fàbregas Flavià, M. Hann, D. Simmonds, R. Rawlinson-Smith, R. Wigg, D. Greaves May 2025

On The Development And Application Of Short Design Events For The Prediction Of Extreme Responses Of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, T. Tosdevin, S. Brown, F. Fàbregas Flavià, M. Hann, D. Simmonds, R. Rawlinson-Smith, R. Wigg, D. Greaves

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

For the prediction of design loads of floating wind turbines in extreme sea states, design standards recommend simulating multiple irregular wave and turbulent wind time series of one to three hour duration. For fixed offshore wind turbines, a constrained wave approach with 10-min simulations is permitted, significantly reducing simulation times. This method is not recommended for floating turbines as the largest wave does not always cause the largest response of interest. This work seeks to develop a response-conditioned, short design event approach to create an equivalent constrained wave method for floating turbines. The responses of spar, semi-submersible, tension leg platform, …

From Theory To Practice: How Job-Embedded Professional Learning Labs Support Implementation And Application, Megan Kortlandt, Samantha Keesling, Asha Williams, Jay Haffner

Michigan Reading Journal

Educators in any role know that supporting application of new learning is critical. Classroom teachers ground their instruction in the gradual release of responsibility, problem-based learning, and other frameworks that support students in taking on new learning themselves. Similarly, it’s long been understood that, in order for professional learning to be effective for adults, it must support educators in transferring new learning to practice (Darling-Hammond et al, 2017). Yet most professional learning frameworks still involve large groups that often take place in settings removed from the students and settings where educators apply the learning. Though they may ask participants to …

Michigan Tech Publications

DNA-binding proteins (DBPs) play a crucial role in gene regulation, development, and environmental responses across plants, animals, and microorganisms. Existing DBP prediction methods are largely limited to sequence information, whether through handcrafted features or sequence-based protein language models (PLMs), overlooking structural cues critical to protein function. In addition, most existing tools are trained for general DBP predictions, which are often not accurate for plant-specific DBPs due to the unique structural and functional properties of plant proteins. Our work introduces PLM-DBPs, a deep learning framework that integrates both sequence-based and structure-aware representations to enhance DBP prediction in plants. We evaluated several …

A decade-long decline in malaria cases has plateaued, primarily due to parasite drug resistance and mosquito resistance to insecticides used in bed nets and indoor residual spraying. Here, we explore the innovative control strategy targeting Plasmodium with antimalarials during the mosquito stages. This strategy has the potential to reduce the risk of resistance emerging because a relatively small population of parasites within the mosquito is subject to selection. After validating mosquito feeding strategies, we screened a range of parasiticidal compounds by feeding them to mosquitoes already infected with mouse malaria (P. berghei). Three antimalarials showed activity against P. berghei in …

Bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) is a binary compound displaying a strong spin−orbit coupling, resulting in a narrow bulk bandgap material with a gapless metallic surface. By shrinking the size of Bi2Se3 within the strong confinement regime, its optoelectronic properties changed drastically. To achieve this goal, strongly confined Bi2Se3 quantum dots (QDs) were produced by pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL). The laser used for the synthesis was a nanosecond Nd/YAG laser emitting at 1064 nm and pulsing at ∼13 mJ/pulse. The irradiation of the bulk target was performed at 1 kHz in acetone and lasted 5 min. Finally, the Bi2Se3 QDs …
