Nonlinear Integral Control Schemes For A Cadence-Heartrate Process: A Matlab Exploration, Alexander G. Elliott Jun 2025

Nonlinear Integral Control Schemes For A Cadence-Heartrate Process: A Matlab Exploration, Alexander G. Elliott

Master's Theses

Keeping one’s heart-rate within a specific range during a cardiovascular workout can be difficult due to many factors including variations in the exercise environment and changes in energy level. One’s heart-rate can be controlled by tuning the intensity level of the activity over time. This study focuses on the relationship between a runner’s cadence and their heart-rate and explores ways to control the heart-rate by adjusting the cadence. Previous work in this area modeled the cadence-heartrate plant as a first-order linear system, but this has been shown to be insufficient. This work improves upon previous research in this area by …

Development Of A Reaction Wheel System For Cal Poly’S Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics Simulator, Caleb Nalley

Master's Theses

The Cal Poly Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics Simulator (SADS) is an ongoing project to develop a system capable of simulating the attitude dynamics and kinematics of a rigid body in space. Actuations on the SADS are performed by reaction wheels, however the current reaction wheels have various issues that decrease system performance and are not independent of the SADS. The reaction wheel developed as part of this thesis will be designed to improve performance and set out design specifications tailored to the SADS, serve as an independent assembly that can be transferred to other systems, and provide a general outline for …

Density-Dependent Habitat Selection And Home Range Sizes In A Recovering Population Of Island Foxes (Urocyon Littoralis) On Santa Rosa Island, California, Kathleen B. Elder Jun 2025

Density-Dependent Habitat Selection And Home Range Sizes In A Recovering Population Of Island Foxes (Urocyon Littoralis) On Santa Rosa Island, California, Kathleen B. Elder

Master's Theses

Understanding factors that affect how animals select their home ranges is critical for proper species management, especially for threatened and endemic species. Density-dependent factors can be particularly difficult to understand because studying them requires large fluctuations in population size. The island fox (Urocyon littoralis), endemic to the California Channel Islands, has experienced dramatic fluctuations in population size making it an excellent candidate for studying the effects of density on home range size and habitat selection. In 2009, researchers on Santa Rosa Island took advantage of this “natural experiment” to document fox home ranges and habitat selection at a …

The Extraordinary In The Ordinary: Nineteenth Century Female Teachers And Their Professionalization Of An Occupation, Samantha G. Santana Jun 2025

The Extraordinary In The Ordinary: Nineteenth Century Female Teachers And Their Professionalization Of An Occupation, Samantha G. Santana

Master's Theses

Women’s occupation as teachers has remained uncritically relegated to the sphere of women’s work. In reality however, early nineteenth century female teachers made clear articulations how they understood their occupations as teachers. Through their publications, autobiographies, and biographies written by former pupils, they left behind for current educators their estimations of the integral job they performed. As educators, these women maintained the paramount role of educating the nation’s next generation of citizens. This was of particular importance in the aftermath of the American Revolution when America’s children were subjected to lacking, colonial education experiments. Before and during the ensuing common …

From Conflict to Clarity: Resolving Data Differences in Habitat Assessments to Inform Conservation Priorities for the Giant Kangaroo Rat

Caroline MacKenzie

Conservation strategies frequently rely on habitat suitability models, habitat assessments and species occurrence data to identify areas for protection. However, these methods often produce conflicting inference on species presence and habitat quality, complicating management decisions. This study builds on prior work which used three distinct methods to guide conservation planning for the endangered Giant Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys ingens): habitat suitability modeling based on abiotic predictors, aerial imagery to assess habitat quality through visible burrow mounds and live-trapping …

Comparing Machine Learning Paired Optimization Strategies For Single-Component Waterborne Direct-To-Metal Coatings, Harvir S. Kalkat Jun 2025

Comparing Machine Learning Paired Optimization Strategies For Single-Component Waterborne Direct-To-Metal Coatings, Harvir S. Kalkat

Master's Theses

As R&D attempts to fine tune properties before production, the redesign and testing process can become highly iterative. The repetitive nature of formulating can be difficult to escape when relying on chemical intuition alone. To provide some guidance in this process, machine learning (ML) can leverage data from previous trials1 to design suggestions for subsequent trials. Although ML capabilities have vastly expanded in the last few years, integration of ML into chemistry R&D and education has been slow. Unraveling the mystique of ML can help change what has been a slow embrace in the coatings industry. It is important …

Multibeam Communication With Digital Sparse Arrays, Tavita Dayton Jun 2025

Multibeam Communication With Digital Sparse Arrays, Tavita Dayton

Master's Theses

The thesis presents a novel approach to maximizing spectral efficiency by utilizing spatial spectrum sharing in digital sparse arrays through non-uniform element configurations. A genetic algorithm approach is developed to optimally place the array elements to achieve maximum beam orthogonality and isolation. The proposed method is compared against three different configurations, namely purely random, random with jitter, and the Van Der Corput sequence (a low-discrepancy sampling approach). Simulated results demonstrate that the genetic algorithm and jitter methods successfully meet design specifications for beam orthogonality, average interelement spacing, and computational time. At the same time, the random and Van Der Corput …

Birch With Tidyclust In R, Jacob Perez Jun 2025

Birch With Tidyclust In R, Jacob Perez

Master's Theses

This thesis introduces a new implementation of the BIRCH clustering algorithm within the tidyclust framework in R. Traditional hierarchical clustering methods face scalability limitations with large datasets, due to their computational complexity. BIRCH offers a scalable alternative by summarizing data into microclusters using a CF-tree. This work shows the integration of the phases of the BIRCH algorithm into tidyclust, which enables a streamlined workflow for model specification, evaluation, and prediction. Through this implementation, scalable hierarchical clustering has been brought to R users within the tidyclust interface, enhacing the ability to better analyze large datasets.

Course Material Or External Factors?: Assessing Student Perceptions That Impede Learning In Engineering Education, Eleazar Marquez, Samuel Garcia Jr.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Engineering courses are mathematically inclined and rigorous in nature. Numerous pedagogical methods such as communication strategies, learning environments, and visual supplements have been designed and implemented to promote student learning, engagement, and success in rigorous topics. As such, engineering students are encouraged to allot sufficient time to recurrently process lecture notes, attend office hours, or inquire about ambiguous technical content to fully assimilate course material. In this study, students enrolled in two engineering courses (Rigid Body Dynamics and Engineering Analysis) were evaluated to identify which aspects (course material or external factors) generated the most predicaments during a semester span. The …

(Wp 2025-03) Ethics In Economics - Not Ethics And Economics: Guidance For Researchers, John B. Davis Jun 2025

(Wp 2025-03) Ethics In Economics - Not Ethics And Economics: Guidance For Researchers, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

This paper, originally a presentation at the 2024 World Congress of Social Economics Summer School at University of Massachusetts-Boston, discusses how ethical values can be incorporated in empirical research. It identifies mainstream economics’ barriers to doing this, and shows they produce a view of the relationship between ethics and economics that excludes ethics from economics. Mainstream economics sees this relationship as interdisciplinary – an ethics and economics. I argue it should be seen as multidisciplinary – an ethics in economics. The mainstream regards ethical values as subjective assuming that there are no facts about ethical values. But there is considerable …

Steiner Coset Partitions Of Groups, Fusun Akman, Papa Sissokho Jun 2025

Steiner Coset Partitions Of Groups, Fusun Akman, Papa Sissokho

Faculty Publications – Mathematics

A coset partition of a group G is a set partition of G into finitely many left cosets of one or more subgroups. A driving force in this research area is the Herzog–Schönheim Conjecture, which states that any nontrivial coset partition of a group contains at least two cosets with the same index. Although many families of groups have been shown to satisfy the conjecture, it remains open.

A Steiner coset partition of G, with respect to distinct subgroups H1,...,Hr, is a coset partition of G that contains exactly one coset of each …

Preferences Or Confounders? Persistent Gender Gap In Competition Across Four Continents, Natalia I. Valdez-Gonzalez, Adriana Gaviria, Antonio M. Espin Jun 2025

Preferences Or Confounders? Persistent Gender Gap In Competition Across Four Continents, Natalia I. Valdez-Gonzalez, Adriana Gaviria, Antonio M. Espin

ESI Working Papers

The gender gap in willingness to compete is thought to underlie enduring inequalities in education, career choice, and labor market outcomes. Yet it remains unclear whether the gap reflects true preference differences or results from confounding factors such as task stereotypes, overconfidence, or risk aversion. We test gender differences in competition entry across eight pre-registered studies in seven countries spanning four continents (Dominican Republic, Ivory Coast, El Salvador, Madagascar, Spain, The Philippines, and Uruguay; total n = 1,833), using an experimental design that systematically minimizes these confounds: (i) based on a non-male-stereotyped task (the Reading the Mind in the Eyes …

Performance Comparison Of Learning With Errors Cryptosystems, Gabriel Johnson Jun 2025

Performance Comparison Of Learning With Errors Cryptosystems, Gabriel Johnson

Theses

Due to recent advancements in quantum computing, there has been great interest in finding quantum-resistant public key encryption algorithms. Much focus has been given to lattice-based cryptosystems, as certain lattice problems appear difficult even in the quantum setting. In particular, the Learning with Errors (LWE) problem, introduced by Regev, gives a means for constructing numerous public key cryptosystems with very strong proofs of security based on the hardness of finding a short vector in a lattice. We analyze and compare the performance, in terms of memory usage and speed, of four different Learning with Errors cryptosystems: basic LWE, normal-form LWE, …

Parsing Of Math Formulas And Chemical Diagrams Using Graph-Based Representation And Attention Models, Ayush Kumar Shah Jun 2025

Parsing Of Math Formulas And Chemical Diagrams Using Graph-Based Representation And Attention Models, Ayush Kumar Shah

Theses

Mathematical formulas and chemical diagrams appear frequently in scientific documents but are often embedded as visual content, either rasterized or vector-based images, limiting their accessibility and automated analysis. This thesis aims to bridge this gap by presenting a graph-based visual parsing framework that recognizes and parses these notations from both vector and raster image inputs in digital documents. For mathematical formulas in born-digital PDFs, we construct Symbol Layout Trees (SLTs) using a graph defined over vector-based primitives, capturing spatial relationships, avoiding relying on OCR. For born-digital chemical diagrams, we introduce a Minimum Spanning Tree (MST)-based technique that extracts molecular structure …

Importance: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mental illness characterized more by functional rather than structural brain abnormalities. The pattern of regional homogeneity (ReHo) deficits in MDD may relate to underlying regional hypoperfusion. Capturing this functional deficit pattern provides a brain pattern-based biomarker for MDD that is linked to the underlying pathophysiology.

Objective: To examine whether cortical ReHo patterns provide a replicable biomarker for MDD that is more sensitive than reduced cortical thickness and evaluate whether the ReHo MDD deficit pattern reflects regional cerebral blood flow (RCBF) deficit patterns in MDD and whether a regional vulnerability index (RVI) thus …

From Novice To Expert: Exploring The Relationship Between Information Literacy Threshold Concepts And Epistemological Development, Amanda L. Folk

Communications in Information Literacy

The Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education articulates the ways of thinking, knowing, and doing that are valued in the academic community. Prior to the Framework, several scholars explored the potential relationship between information literacy and epistemological development, or the ways in which learners develop their understanding of and positionality to knowledge creation. However, the intersections of information literacy and epistemological development have been underexamined in the era of the Framework. In this article, I analyze the Framework through the lens of two epistemological development models, the Epistemological Reflection Model (Baxter-Magolda, 1992) and Reflective Judgement Model (King …

Simulations Of Differential Reflectivity Columns In Quasi-Linear Convective Systems, Devon Jacob Healey

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Much research over the past decade has revealed that dual-polarization radar is a powerful tool in furthering our understanding of severe storm dynamics and subsequently improving warning strategies for these hazardous events. However, there are currently very few studies examining a particularly prolific severe convective storm mode with dual-polarization radar: quasi-linear convective systems (QLCSs). These storms can occur in any season of the year throughout most of the contiguous United States and can have immense societal impacts. Warning for the hazards produced by QLCSs is currently a significant operational challenge, therefore, research is needed to see if applying dual-polarization radar …

Capacity Investment In The Presence Of Correlated Demand And Production Resource Uncertainties And Its Implications For Financial Hedging, Onur Boyabatli, Guiyun Feng Jun 2025

Capacity Investment In The Presence Of Correlated Demand And Production Resource Uncertainties And Its Implications For Financial Hedging, Onur Boyabatli, Guiyun Feng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In manufacturing firms, besides demand uncertainty, capacity investment decisions may also be subject to uncertainty in the availability of a production resource (e.g., budget or commodity component) which may become constraining for manufacturing. When the production resource uncertainty is tied to a financial index (e.g., asset or commodity price), the firm can enter into financial hedging contracts at the time of capacity investment to engineer this uncertainty. Our paper characterizes the optimal capacity investment and hedging decisions and examines how production resource uncertainty impacts the firm’s decisions, profitability, and the value of hedging. We identify three key drivers of these …

Hardiness, Optimism And Hope: Longitudinal Study Of How Individuals May Build Resilience Through Experiential Undergraduate University Courses, Paul Lim, Chin Heng Low, Kevin Koh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study explores the antecedents of students’ resilience in a management education setting, by looking at the role of state hope and dispositional optimism in cultivating their psychological hardiness. While resilience is recognized as integral to personal growth, extant research has predominantly focused on its correlations with psychological capital (PsyCap) elements such as hope and optimism; or examined the outcomes of hardiness as a proxy of resilience. Little has been done to explicate the directional causal relationships among the PsyCap elements and hardiness in view of resilience-building. Using a longitudinal mixed methods design, this study delves into how state hope, …
