Pacific Faculty Work

We present a sample of 341 “little red dots” (LRDs) spanning the redshift range z ∼ 2-11 using data from the CEERS, PRIMER, JADES, UNCOVER, and NGDEEP surveys. Unlike past use of color indices to identify LRDs, we employ continuum slope fitting using shifting bandpasses to sample the same rest-frame emission blueward and redward of the Balmer break. This enables the detection of LRDs over a wider redshift range and with less contamination from galaxies with strong breaks that otherwise lack a rising red continuum. The redshift distribution of our sample increases at z < 8 and then undergoes a rapid decline at z ∼ 4.5, which may tie the emergence of these sources to the inside-out growth that galaxies experience during this epoch. We find that LRDs are ∼1 dex more numerous than X-ray- and UV-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) at z ∼ 5-7. Within our sample, we have identified the first two X-ray-detected LRDs. An X-ray spectral analysis confirms that these AGN are moderately obscured with log ( N H / cm 2 ) of 23 . 3 − 1.3 + 0.4 and 22.7 2 − 0.16 + 0.13 . Our analysis reveals that reddened AGN emission dominates their rest-optical light, while the rest-UV originates from their host galaxies. We also present NIRSpec observations from the RUBIES survey of 17 LRDs that show broad emission lines consistent with AGN activity. The confirmed AGN fraction of our sample is 71% for sources with F444W < 26.5. In addition, we find three LRDs with blueshifted Balmer absorption features in their spectra, suggesting an outflow of high-density, low-ionization gas from near the central engine of these faint, red AGN.

Multi Trajectory Guided Model Inversion Attacks, Indrajit Nandi Jun 2025

Multi Trajectory Guided Model Inversion Attacks, Indrajit Nandi

Master’s Dissertations

Recent advancements in deep learning have brought significant concerns regarding the privacy of training data due to overfitting and memorization, as well as a lack of defense mechanisms. In model inversion attacks, where Attackers aim to reconstruct original private training samples (i.e images) just by using the DNN model’s last layer output. Traditional black-box MI attacks face three key challenges: (1) Non-convex optimization landscapes often trap reconstructions in poor local minima, degrading output quality. (2) Black-box scenarios require excessive queries to approximate gradients, raising detection risks. (3) Unconstrained pixel-space optimization generates unrealistic artifacts since the inverse mapping lacks natural image …

An Examination Of How Technological Universities Develop Cultural Capital Through Active Learning, Emma Carroll Dr, Orla Watson, Aisling M. Burke

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

Drawing on Bourdieu’s (1986) framework of embodied, objectified and institutionalised capital, this paper explores how technological universities (TUs) support the development of students’ cultural capital through active learning approaches. The formation of technological universities in Ireland marked a notable shift in the higher education landscape, with an emphasis on these institutions meeting the regional and economic needs of the location in which they operate. Currently, there is a dearth of studies pertaining to cultural capital and TUs. Consequently, there is an impetus for a conceptual study to help guide researchers towards understanding how active learning practices within Ireland’s TUs can …

2.5d Dual-Encoder U-Net For Lesion Segmentation In Chest Ct Scans, Jagannath Mukkara

Master’s Dissertations

Accurate segmentation of lesions in chest CT scans plays a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring pulmonary diseases such as COVID-19. In this, we introduce a novel 2.5D[1] dual-encoder U-Net model[2] that utilizes both the central slice and its neighboring slices to improve segmentation accuracy while keeping computational demands manageable. Our model incorporates residual connections[3] and feature fusion[4] to effectively merge multi-slice contextual information, overcoming the limitations found in traditional 2D and 3D methods. To ensure a reliable evaluation and avoid data leakage, we used patient-level data splitting. We validate our approach on a carefully curated chest CT dataset, showing …

The Critical Plastocapillary Number For A Newtonian Liquid Filament Embedded Into A Viscoplastic Fluid, Mohammad Tanver Hossain, Wonsik Eom, Arjun Shah, Andrew Lowe, Douglas Fudge, Sameh H. Tawfick, Randy Ewoldt

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The yield stress of a viscoplastic material can stabilize an embedded fluid tunnel against capillarity-induced breakup, enabling remarkable technologies such as embedded 3D printing of intricate, freeform, and small components. However, there is persistent disagreement in the published literature between the observed minimum stable diameter, 𝑑min, and the theoretical plastocapillary length 𝑝𝑐 = 2𝛤∕𝜎𝑦, with interfacial tension 𝛤 and bath yield stress 𝜎𝑦, leading to a prior hypothesis that the apparent surface tension 𝛤 is much smaller to enforce 𝑑min = 𝑝𝑐 . Here we introduce and experimentally test a new hypothesis that the critical diameter is set by the …

Understanding Batch-Normalization In Deep Neural Networks, Pendyala Sai Srujan Jun 2025

Understanding Batch-Normalization In Deep Neural Networks, Pendyala Sai Srujan

Master’s Dissertations

Batch Normalization (BN) is a commonly used technique in various deep learning architectures for tasks such as image classification and object detection. It stabilizes and accelerates training by normalizing the activations of intermediate layers using mean and variance of the batch, allowing the use of higher learning rates and often improving generalization through implicit regularization. During inference, BN uses running estimates of batch statistics accumulated during training. However, if individual batches are not representative of the overall data distribution, these accumulated statistics may not accurately approximate the population statistics. This discrepancy can lead to a phenomenon known as **estimation shift**, …

Master’s Dissertations

The Planar-k-Centre problem is an important problem in the class of Optimal Facility Location problems, where given n points in the planar, the objective is finding the smallest k congruent discs such that their union encompasses all points. This dissertation examines a variant of this problem in which the L1 metric is used to determine the distances rather than the standard Euclidean metric, which we call L1P2C and a closely related problem which we call Undirected k Square Coverage where there is no directional constraint for the k squares which contain the given set of points. We have found two …

The Impact Of Substrate Structure And Catalyst Identity On The Lewis-Acid Catalyzed Carbonyl-Olefin Metathesis Reaction, Cory William Schneider Jun 2025

The Impact Of Substrate Structure And Catalyst Identity On The Lewis-Acid Catalyzed Carbonyl-Olefin Metathesis Reaction, Cory William Schneider

Dissertations

The formation of carbon-carbon double bonds is one of the most important transformations in organic chemistry, as they are integral to the structural scaffold of many organic molecules. Thus, the development and understanding of reactions that form such bonds is crucial. Lewis-acid catalyzed carbonyl-olefin metathesis is one such reaction. Like many others, this reaction is sensitive to both the identity of the catalyst, as well as the structure of the substrate. In this dissertation, I present empirical and theoretical works investigating how the catalyst identity and the substrate direct the reactivity of the Lewis-acid catalyzed carbonyl-olefin metathesis reaction.

Higher-Order Exceptional Points In A Non-Reciprocal Waveguide Beam Splitter, Hamed Ghaemidizicheh, Shahram Dehdashti, Andreas Hanke, Ahmed Touhami, Janis Nötzel

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Non-Hermitian systems have attracted significant interest because of their intriguing properties, including exceptional points (EPs), where eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates coalesce. In particular, quantum systems with EPs exhibit an enhanced sensitivity to external perturbations, which increases with the order of the EP. Therefore, higher-order EPs hold significant potential for advanced sensing applications, but they are challenging to achieve due to stringent symmetry requirements. In this work, we study the dynamics of a generalized lossy waveguide beam splitter with asymmetric coupling by introducing non-reciprocity as a tunable parameter to achieve higher-order EPs even without dissipation. Moreover, we analyze the evolution …

Mapping the vascular organization of the brain is of great importance across various domains of basic neuroimaging research, diagnostic radiology, and neurology. However, the intricate task of precisely mapping vasculature across brain regions and cortical layers presents formidable challenges, resulting in a limited understanding of neurometabolic factors influencing the brain's microvasculature. Addressing this gap, our study investigates whole-brain vascular volume using ferumoxytol-weighted laminar-resolution multi-echo gradient-echo imaging in macaque monkeys. We validate the results with published data for vascular densities and compare them with cytoarchitecture, neuron and synaptic densities. The ferumoxytol-induced change in transverse relaxation rate (ΔR

The Renovated Aperture Area Measurement Facility At The National Institute Of Standards And Technology (Nist), Ulf Griesmann

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Apertures with precisely known area are used in radiometry and photometry to define the optical phase space into which radiant flux is emitted or received. For example, solid angle, needed for the realization of the Candela, is realized with apertures of known area. Another common application is the measurement of irradiance, the radiant flux received at a surface per unit area (or its photometric analog illuminance), which requires an aperture with known area to be placed in front of an optical radiation sensor.

Beginning in the 1990s the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed improved methods for …

Intervention For Struggling Learners In K-5 Social Studies: Exploring A Tiered Model Of Support, Joshua M. Duggan Jun 2025

Intervention For Struggling Learners In K-5 Social Studies: Exploring A Tiered Model Of Support, Joshua M. Duggan

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

The K-5 social studies curriculum introduces students to foundational knowledge in civics, geography, economics, and history. Social studies is also a vehicle through which students: (a) synthesize content knowledge which in turn supports reading comprehension, (b) learn about community structures around them, and (c) build social-emotional skills through an in-depth understanding of the human condition. Yet, instructional time allocated to social studies has decreased over the past few decades, and scores on national social studies assessments indicate that most students do not attain proficiency in acquiring social studies knowledge. Furthermore, there is an absence of a robust system of intervention …

Notes On The Invariance Of Tautness Under Lie Sphere Transformations, Thomas E. Cecil Jun 2025

Notes On The Invariance Of Tautness Under Lie Sphere Transformations, Thomas E. Cecil

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship

An embedding ϕ : V → Sn of a compact, connected manifold V into the unit sphere Sn ⊂ Rn+1 is said to be taut, if every nondegenerate spherical distance function dp, p ∈ Sn, is a perfect Morse function on V , i.e., it has the minimum number of critical points on V required by the Morse inequalities. In these notes, we give an exposition of the proof of the invariance of tautness under Lie sphere transformations due to ´Alvarez Paiva. First we extend the definition of tautness of submanifolds of S …
