Leakage-Resilient Easily Deployable And Efficiently Searchable Encryption (Edese), Jiaming Yuan, Yingjiu Li, Jun Li, Daoyuan Wu, Jianting Ning, Yangguang Tian, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Easily Deployable and Efficiently Searchable Encryption (EDESE) is a cryptographic primitive designed for practical searchable applications, offering efficient search and easy deployment. However, it remains vulnerable to Leakage-Abuse attacks, allowing adversaries to exploit keyword-matching processes to extract sensitive information. To address these vulnerabilities, we introduce Leakage-Resilient EDESE (LR-EDESE) with k-indistinguishability and controlled leakage functions. We then propose Volume Leakage-Resilient EDESE (VLR-EDESE), a new scheme to protect against both query and document volume leakage. Our experimental results demonstrate that at k = 5000 (maximum security setting), VLR-EDESE incurs an overhead of 63× compared to the baseline EDESE without leakage protection, outperforming …

Surrogate Learning In Meta-Black-Box Optimization: A Preliminary Study, Zeyuan Ma, Zhiyang Huang, Jiacheng Chen, Zhiguang Cao, Yue-Jiao Gong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent Meta-Black-Box Optimization (MetaBBO) approaches have shown possibility of enhancing the optimization performance through learning meta-level policies to dynamically configure low-level optimizers. However, existing MetaBBO approaches potentially consume massive function evaluations to train their meta-level policies. Inspired by the recent trend of using surrogate models for cost-friendly evaluation of expensive optimization problems, in this paper, we propose a novel MetaBBO framework which combines surrogate learning process and reinforcement learning-aided Differential Evolution algorithm, namely Surr-RLDE, to address the intensive function evaluation in MetaBBO. Surr-RLDE comprises two learning stages: surrogate learning and policy learning. In surrogate learning, we train a Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks …

Collaboration With Dynamic Open Ad Hoc Team Via Team State Modelling, Jing Sun, Cong Zhang, Zhiguang Cao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Open ad hoc teamwork presents the challenging problem of designing an autonomous agent that can rapidly adapt to collaborate with teammates without prior coordination in an open environment. Existing methods primarily rely on fixed, predefined teammate types, overlooking the fact that teammates may change dynamically. To address this limitation, we propose a novel reinforcement learning approach, the Open Online Teammate Adaptation Framework (Open-OTAF), which enables a controlled agent to collaborate with dynamic teammates in open ad hoc environments. To achieve this, the controlled agent employs a dual teamwork situation inference model to capture the current teamwork state, facilitating decision-making under …

A Mixed-Curvature Based Pre-Training Paradigm For Multi-Task Vehicle Routing Solver, Suyu Liu, Zhiguang Cao, Shanshan Feng, Yew-Soon Ong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Solving various types of vehicle routing problems (VRPs) using a unified neural solver has garnered significant attentions in recent years. Despite their effectiveness, existing neural multi-task solvers often fail to account for the geometric structures inherent in different tasks, which may result in suboptimal performance. To address this limitation, we propose a curvature-aware pre-training framework. Specifically, we leverage mixed-curvature spaces during the feature fusion stage, encouraging the model to capture the underlying geometric properties of each instance. Through extensive experiments, we evaluate the proposed pre-training strategy on existing neural multi-task solvers across a variety of testing scenarios. The results demonstrate …

Shield: Multi-Task Multi-Distribution Vehicle Routing Solver With Sparsity And Hierarchy, Yong Liang Goh, Zhiguang Cao, Yining Ma, Jianan Zhou, Mohammed Haroon Dupty, Wee Sun Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent advances toward foundation models for routing problems have shown great potential of a unified deep model for various VRP variants. However, they overlook the complex real-world customer distributions. In this work, we advance the Multi-Task VRP (MTVRP) setting to the more realistic yet challenging Multi-Task Multi-Distribution VRP (MTMDVRP) setting, and introduce SHIELD, a novel model that leverages both sparsity and hierarchy principles. Building on a deeper decoder architecture, we first incorporate the Mixture-of-Depths (MoD) technique to enforce sparsity. This improves both efficiency and generalization by allowing the model to dynamically select nodes to use or skip each decoder layer, …

Ts-Diff: Two-Stage Diffusion Model For Low-Light Raw Image Enhancement, Yi Li, Zhiyuan Zhang, Jiangnan Xia, Jianghan Cheng, Qilong Wu, Junwei Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a novel Two-Stage Diffusion Model (TS-Diff) for enhancing extremely low-light RAW images. In the pre-training stage, TS-Diff synthesizes noisy images by constructing multiple virtual cameras based on a noise space. Camera Feature Integration (CFI) modules are then designed to enable the model to learn generalizable features across diverse virtual cameras. During the aligning stage, CFIs are averaged to create a target-specific CFIT, which is fine-tuned using a small amount of real RAW data to adapt to the noise characteristics of specific cameras. A structural reparameterization technique further simplifies CFIT for efficient deployment. To address color shifts during …

Sparse-To-Dense: A Free Lunch For Lossless Acceleration Of Video Understanding In Llms, Xuan Zhang, Cunxiao Du, Sicheng Yu, Jiawei Wu, Fengzhuo Zhang, Wei Gao, Qian Liu Jul 2025

Sparse-To-Dense: A Free Lunch For Lossless Acceleration Of Video Understanding In Llms, Xuan Zhang, Cunxiao Du, Sicheng Yu, Jiawei Wu, Fengzhuo Zhang, Wei Gao, Qian Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to the auto-regressive nature of current video large language models (Video-LLMs), the inference latency increases as the input sequence length grows, posing challenges for the efficient processing of video sequences that are usually very long. We observe that during decoding, the attention scores of most tokens in Video-LLMs tend to be sparse and concentrated, with only certain tokens requiring comprehensive full attention. Based on this insight, we introduce Sparse-to-Dense (StD), a novel decoding strategy that integrates two distinct modules: one leveraging sparse top-K attention and the other employing dense full attention. These modules collaborate to accelerate Video-LLMs without loss. …

Rustmap: Towards Project-Scale C-To-Rust Migration Via Program Analysis And Llm, Xuemeng Cai, Jiakun Liu, Xiping Huang, Yijun Yu, Haitao Wu, Chunmiao Li, Bo Wang, Imam Nur Bani Yusuf, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Migrating existing C programs into Rust is increasingly desired, as Rust offers superior memory safety while maintaining C’s high performance. Existing automated translation tools, such as C2Rust, may rely too much on syntactic, template-based translation and generate unsafe Rust code that is hard for human developers to read, maintain, or even compile. More semantic-aware translation that produces safer, idiomatic, and runnable Rust code is much needed. This paper introduces a novel dependency-guided and large language model (LLM)-based C-to-Rust translation approach, RustMap, based on three key ideas: (1) Utilize LLM’s capabilities to produce idiomatic Rust code from given small pieces of …

Investigating The Thixotropy Of Fresh Struvite Cement-Based Composite: Insights On Mechanisms Of The Pastes’ Thixotropic Behavior, Ugochukwu Ewuzie, Abdulkareem O. Yusuf, Damilola Daramola, Monday Uchenna Okoronkwo

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Struvite (ST) recovered during wastewater treatment has been sparsely applied in cement-based composites. This study systematically evaluated the thixotropic behavior of cement-struvite (CST) pastes, a mix of 5–20 % ST by mass of cement, and proposed the interaction mechanisms leading to the pastes' thixotropy. The hysteresis loop area was used to establish the pastes' thixotropy and investigate its relationship with increased ST content, temperature, and yield stress. In the thixotropic behavior model used, the equilibrium shear stress was employed to examine the CST pastes' irreversible change; the characteristic time of deflocculation was used to study the flocs destruction process; and …

Investigating Spectral Rendering Techniques To Improve Colour Matching In Virtual Production, Vlad Simion

Theses

As rendering engines become increasingly important in film and television, with their use in virtual production (VP) to display rendered imagery, some underlying issues become more apparent. This thesis aims to investigate how we can improve asset color matching of VP elements with real-life objects found on sets. Experiments were conducted in which objects were exposed to various types of lighting setups, and digital twins were rendered using traditional computer graphics techniques. The renderings occurred in both classic RGB spaces and the spectral domain. Additionally, data reduction techniques were used for the spectral renderings to determine if any of them …

A Simple Model Of Spiral Galaxies From Geometric Optics, Bogdan Szafraniec, James N. Blake Jul 2025

A Simple Model Of Spiral Galaxies From Geometric Optics, Bogdan Szafraniec, James N. Blake

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We propose a simple model of spiral galaxies based on the interference of gravitational waves. The interference is deduced from geometric optics analysis of the refractive index profiles that mimic the behavior of gravitational potentials −1/r and r2. We analyze the refractive index profiles, n(r)2 = a + b/r and n(r)2 = a + br2, because they are realistically shaped and yield closed form solutions. The two profiles yield similar physical results, showing that the physical interpretation is not dependent on the exact details of the profile. The first profile yields trajectories that can …

The Settlement Privacy-Transparency Matrix: Moving Beyond The Dichotomous Mindset In The Settlement Debate, Alyson Carrel, Peter K. Chan Jul 2025

The Settlement Privacy-Transparency Matrix: Moving Beyond The Dichotomous Mindset In The Settlement Debate, Alyson Carrel, Peter K. Chan

Journal of Dispute Resolution

The philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer once wrote, “The first forty years of life give us the text; the next thirty supply the commentary on it.” Forty years after Owen Fiss’s seminal article “Against Settlement,” it is time to reimagine how we approach the settlement debate beyond traditional dichotomies. Just as Schopenhauer recognized that time and experience allow us to better understand our past, forty years of grappling with the settlement debate have given us the perspective to see its limitations, and now with emerging technologies, new possibilities. The ‘text’ of the debate—its dichotomous framing and distributive solutions—has shaped four decades of …

Direct Coupling Of Continuum And Shell Elements In Large Deformation Problems, Astrid Pechstein, Michael Neunteufel Jul 2025

Direct Coupling Of Continuum And Shell Elements In Large Deformation Problems, Astrid Pechstein, Michael Neunteufel

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In many applications, thin shell-like structures are integrated within or attached to volumetric bodies. This includes reinforcements placed in soft matrix material in lightweight structure design, or hollow structures that are partially or completely filled. Finite element simulations of such setups are highly challenging. A brute force discretization of structural as well as volumetric parts using well-shaped three-dimensional elements may be accurate, but leads to problems of enormous computational complexity even for simple models. One desired alternative is the use of shell elements for thin-walled parts, as such a discretization greatly alleviates size restrictions on the underlying finite element mesh. …

The Discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin Method, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan Jul 2025

The Discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin Method, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin (DPG) method is a Petrov–Galerkin finite element method with test functions designed for obtaining stability. These test functions are computable locally, element by element, and are motivated by optimal test functions which attain the supremum in an inf-sup condition. A profound consequence of the use of nearly optimal test functions is that the DPG method can inherit the stability of the (undiscretized) variational formulation, be it coercive or not. This paper combines a presentation of the fundamentals of the DPG ideas with a review of the ongoing research on theory and applications of the DPG methodology. The …

Since its development in the early 2010s, sociohydrology has deepened our understanding of the long-term coevolution of humans and water by integrating insights from both the natural and social sciences, while also fostering an interdisciplinary community. Its modus operandi to date has been to focus on emergent phenomena, manifesting as unintended consequences, in a variety of contexts. The compound disaster that struck Japan’s Noto Peninsula in 2024, and similar experiences in other parts of the world, underscore the urgent need for systemic approaches that are co-developed by academia and practitioners and focus on context-specific solutions. This perspective piece thus calls …

The impact of exogenous stressors, such as cancer chemotherapies, on the genomic integrity and clonal dynamics of normal hematopoiesis is not well defined. We conducted whole-genome sequencing on 1,276 single-cell-derived hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) colonies from ten patients with multiple myeloma treated with chemotherapies and six normal donors. Melphalan treatment significantly increased the mutational burden, producing a distinctive mutation signature, whereas other chemotherapeutic agents had minimal effects. Consequently, the clonal diversity and architecture of post-treatment HSPCs resemble those observed in normal elderly individuals, particularly through the progression of oligoclonal hematopoiesis, thereby suggesting that chemotherapy accelerates clonal aging. Comparison Of Energy Efficiency And Vegetation In Different Establishment And Management Systems Of Steep Mountainous Grassland In The Aso Area, Japan, K Kabata, C Okamoto, M Shimizu, M Kikuchi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The Aso area is one of the most important areas for grassland agriculture in Japan. In this area there exists ca. 44,000 hectares of which ca. 28,700 ha are steep mountainous lands ( a gradient of more than 15 degrees). Additionally, there is much precipitation (ca 2.600 mm/year) in the area. Consequently, there is a problem of grassland destruction due to soil erosion. Therefore, in order to promote the utilization and conservation of steep grasslands, the following two experimental grazing were carried out: 1) a two pasture system and 2) a coexistent pasture system with introduced and native grasses. In …
