Explaining the rapid evolution of human cooperation and its role in our species’ biodemographic success remains a major evolutionary puzzle. To address this challenge, we tested a social drive hypothesis, which predicts that social plasticity and social selection in human groups cause indirect genetic effects that accelerate the adaptation of fitness, promoting population growth via feedback between the environmental causes and evolutionary consequences of cooperation. Using Bayesian multilevel models to analyze fertility data from a small-scale society, we demonstrate that density- and frequency-dependent indirect genetic effects on fitness promote the evolution of cooperation among neighboring women, increasing the rate of …

Low-Energy Multi-Photon Scattering At Tree-Level And One-Loop Order In A Homogeneous Electromagnetic Field, Ivan Ahumada, Patrick Copinger, James P. Edwards Jul 2025

Low-Energy Multi-Photon Scattering At Tree-Level And One-Loop Order In A Homogeneous Electromagnetic Field, Ivan Ahumada, Patrick Copinger, James P. Edwards

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We study low energy photons coupled to scalar and spinor matter in the presence of an arbitrary homogeneous electromagnetic field in a first-quantised (worldline) approach. Utilising a Fock-Schwinger gauge for both the scattering photons and homogeneous background, simple compact expressions are found for both the photon- and background-dressed effective action and propagator in scalar and spinor quantum electrodynamics. The low-energy limit allows identification of the coupling of the scattering photons as one of an effective homogeneous superposition of their field strengths, with amplitudes following from application of a suitable linearisation operator. To treat the linearisation, several techniques are employed, including …

In Vitro Α-Glucosidase Enzyme Inhibition Activity Test Of Water Extract From Sintok (Cinnamomum Sintoc Blume) Bark, Astrella Amanda Putri Saksono, Inana Ratu Soripada Simanjuntak, Mariana Wahjudi, Marisca Evalina Gondokesumo

Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research

Diabetes mellitus is a condition characterized by elevated blood glucose levels beyond the normal limits. One therapeutic approach for managing diabetes mellitus involves inhibiting the α-glucosidase enzyme, which plays a role in glucose absorption in the body. However, the use of oral antidiabetic drugs from the α-glucosidase inhibitor class often causes gastrointestinal side effects. Therefore, exploring natural materials as alternative treatments is a promising option. In Indonesia, one plant with potential as an alternative treatment is sintok (Cinnamomum sintoc Blume), a member of the Cinnamomum genus, which is widely utilized in traditional medicine for chronic diseases such as …

Using A Layered Ensemble Of Physics-Guided Graph Attention Networks To Predict Covid-19 Trends, Connie Sun, Vijayalakshmi Kumarasamy, Yu Liang, Dalei Wu, Yingfeng Wang

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly disseminated worldwide, profoundly impacting numerous nations. Accurately forecasting the trajectory of COVID-19 across various scales is crucial for informing public health decisions. However, existing forecasting models primarily operate at the state or country level. Conventional mathematical models face limitations due to oversimplified assumptions, while machine learning algorithms struggle to extrapolate novel trends. This underscores the necessity for hybrid machine learning models that amalgamate domain expertise to enable precise long-term predictions. In response, we propose a sophisticated three-layered ensemble, tailored to geographical insights and fostering extensive peer learning. Our framework aims to forecast COVID-19 trends at …

Machine Learning For Reparameterization Of Molecular Dynamics Water Model To Accurately Capture Electrical And Thermal Behavior, Khowshik Dey, Murat Barisik, Yu Liang

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

Water is an important component in many scientific and engineering applications, but precisely modeling its thermal, electrical, and physical properties remains difficult in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The widely used TIP4P water model, while useful in many circumstances, requires parameterization to better agreement with experimental results under various conditions. In this study, interpretable machine learning techniques were used to systematically tune the TIP4P model parameters where mathematical relationship between features and targets has been developed using deep symbolic optimization (DSO), resulting in a more accurate depiction of water behavior in molecular dynamics simulation. A data-driven approach was created to optimize …

Assessing The Fidelity Of Ai-Generated Lessons For Elementary-Grades Stem Topics, Deborah Mcallister Jul 2025

Assessing The Fidelity Of Ai-Generated Lessons For Elementary-Grades Stem Topics, Deborah Mcallister

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

Teachers collaborated using MagicSchool, an AI tool, for generating lesson plans for elementary-grades mathematics, science, and technology topics. The lessons were evaluated for fidelity to content and lesson plan components. The problem to be answered was two-fold: What is the fidelity of AI-generated lessons for elementary-grades STEM topics? What are teacher perceptions of using an AI tool? Teachers evaluated the standards-based, AI-generated lesson plans. Scores for lesson plans were compared by content area (mathematics, science, technology) and elementary level (lower versus upper) to determine if fidelity is better for a particular content area or level. Teacher perceptions, regarding the use …

Modeling The Dynamics Of User Adoption And Abandonment For A Single Product, Uyen Nguyen Jul 2025

Modeling The Dynamics Of User Adoption And Abandonment For A Single Product, Uyen Nguyen

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

We introduce a compartmental differential equation model to study the dynamics of user adoption and abandonment for a single product. The model integrates two forms of abandonment: infectious, driven by user interactions, and non-infectious, prompted by external influences. Notably, the infectious abandonment coefficient varies linearly with the number of previous users. We investigate the existence of equilibria of the model and derive the threshold quantity ℛ0. The user-free equilibrium is always present, and its stability is analyzed under the condition ℛ0 < 1. Moreover, a user-prevailing equilibrium does not exist when ℛ0 ≤ 1, but at least one user-prevailing equilibrium is guaranteed when ℛ0 > 1. We further characterize conditions for multiple equilibria and various bifurcations, including saddle-node, 𝑆-shaped, and Hopf bifurcations, and formulate …

Risk-Averse Decision-Making In Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization, Chathuri M. Aththanayake, Lakmali Weerasena Jul 2025

Risk-Averse Decision-Making In Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization, Chathuri M. Aththanayake, Lakmali Weerasena

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

Uncertainty in input data significantly affects the quality of solutions in mathematical optimization, making it crucial to explore alternative decisions when the selected decision becomes unavailable or suboptimal. This study introduces a novel risk-averse decision-making approach for cases where objective function coefficients are uncertain in multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems. We construct a region in the objective space based on reference solutions obtained from the deterministic formulation. Alternative decisions, identified using a neighboring structure that falls within this region, are used to determine risk-preference solutions. We propose two sets of indices to quantify the quality of outcomes and neighboring decisions in …

Extended-Release Buprenorphine With Bupivacaine Effectively Provides Postoperative Analgesia In A Mouse Laparotomy Model, Monika K. Huss, Amber Kerk, Renee Cotton, Helen Chum, Michael Hsieh, Katechan Jampachaisri, Patrick Sharp, Cholowat Pacharinsak Jul 2025

Extended-Release Buprenorphine With Bupivacaine Effectively Provides Postoperative Analgesia In A Mouse Laparotomy Model, Monika K. Huss, Amber Kerk, Renee Cotton, Helen Chum, Michael Hsieh, Katechan Jampachaisri, Patrick Sharp, Cholowat Pacharinsak

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Multimodal analgesia is widely encouraged for major survival surgery. This facilitates lower doses of individual drugs, thereby reducing side effects. Extended-release analgesics offer sustained analgesia coverage, prevent drug dosing nadirs, and reduce stress. Studies evaluating multimodal and extended-release analgesia combinations for major survival surgery in mice are limited. We compared the analgesic effect of bupivacaine and extended-release buprenorphine (Bupi-ER) to bupivacaine and buprenorphine HCl (Bupi-HCl). We hypothesized that preoperative Bupi-ER would provide more effective analgesia than Bupi-HCl. Mice were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups: bupivacaine (2 mg/kg, local infiltration, once) with either 1) extended-release buprenorphine (0.6 mg/kg, …

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

This research explores the complex dynamics of an 8D hyperchaotic system, focusing on its trajectory stability and behavior under various control parameters. By using numerical simulations, we investigate the relationship between the Lyapunov components and the stability of the system. It provides a quantitative measure of the chaos within the model of the matrix, whose derivation consists of the system's sensitivity to perturbation, simulating chaotic systems in high dimensions faces challenges such as high computational resource demands. Difficulty in ensuring numerical convergence and stability. The results highlight the profound impact of control parameters on the dynamic behavior of hyperchaotic systems. …

Hysterical conversion has similar cognition and behaviours to those in the case of ASD; it is, therefore, complex when diagnosing and classifying the condition. The majority of employed diagnostic tests are cross-sectional and fail to describe the developmental and clinical features of ASD; for this reason, they are pretty inaccurate in the diagnosis of ASD and thus cause disparities in the efficiency of the therapeutic interventions used. The present study's research contribution is a new application of deep learning that aims to analyse the spectrum of ASD with gradient-based classifications. In this case, we use a DL model trained on …
